There are so many different things to keep in mind when owning a boat and a lot of them center back on the theme of consistent maintenance. For us, trying to stay on top of everything that needs to get done on Penelope while also learning to sail as complete beginners, keeping this channel afloat, and getting settled into our tiny house on the water, well it has meant that we haven't been as consistent with boat cleaning as we'd have like to be. It’s ok to make rookie mistakes, you are rookies! Being aware is step one. Fixing it is step two. You’ll always be rookies at something, especially since you like to push the limits. We love coming along for the ride. Would it make sense to store the dinghy out of the water, if there is a practical way to do that?

We have that same exact motor and LOVE how light it is. It was pretty slow on our old inflatable, but we bought a folding Porta Bote dinghy which is WAY handier on the Rasmus as a tender, and It is also a lot faster because it is more like a rigid hull. It rows better too. We got into trouble with the inflatable dinghy in New York City 79th Street boat basin because we didn't know the current was too much to get back to our mooring from the dinghy dock at full ebb current. We had to wait hours for the tide to change and it was very cold and dark by the time we got back. We didnt bring jackets or even a light. Talk about newbie mistakes.
That growth on the dinfhy was not bad at all for two months, the cold water up there causes it to grow very slowly. It would be much worse than that in two weeks in Florida or the Bahamas, even in the winter.
We keep our Porta Bote in the water mostly all the time and usually tow it unless we are going offshore. It is easier to clean every week than it is bothering lifting it out every night. Growth scrapes off very easily.
We made a mesh bag to keep all our bott cleaning gear in. We have plastic scrapers, heavy 3M scrubbers, a big sponge and finally heavy rubber gloves. You can really hurt yourself on barnacles and get a bad infection in sea water, especially in brackish water found in estuaries.
A bucket with a 10' rope tied on the handle is good to bring along too. Tie a handy stopper knot at the end of the rope so you can toss it in the water from shore and drag it back at least half full. This makes quick work of rinsing all the yuck off the bottom. I can usually get our dinfhy clean in about 15 minutes and that includes taking the little outboard off unloading all the crap from in the boat, and flipping it over to start the cleaning -and the reverse when it is all clean.
I try to find a nice sandy beach to run it aground and work from shore. But a boat loading ramp works OK for us too since the plastic folding boat is very tough. It is also light and easy to flip and sea life can't stick to it as well. The 10' version fits right up against the lifelines well on the Rasmus and isn't in the way. You should think about one when your inflatable needs replacing.
I hope you guys are headed South now where it is warm. We are still in the Chesapeake and it is COLD. Tomorrow we head towards Norfolk but we are two days out yet from the Solomons unless we go all night which neither of us likes. We prefer stopping every night in a nice anchorage and getting proper sleep.
Maybe we will see you guys down South this winter. I can't imagine staying up North for the season. BRRRR!

Lovely video again, I enjoy them so much - happy days! Deflate and store the dinghy on deck. Learn to inflate and use a halyard to move it into the water, The balance point for a dinghy is where the bolt secures the oars. Add a a "U" bolt or similar and it will be so easy to lift and move ... Well down for the cleaning though!
More tips to avoid rookie mistakes: run the carburetor dry from that Yamaha every time you're not about to use it for few days or more. i.e. just switch off the fuel valve and run until it stalls. Or even better: use alkylate gasoline which won't gum up in the carburetor like the regular gasoline does ... and run the carburetor dry just to make it double sure.
Just one hard learned lesson to pass on: when climbing on the boat from the dock, grab the shrouds, not the stanchions.
Over time any repeated stress put on the stanchions will cause the deck at the bases to leak and rot the deck core, requiring re-bedding, which is a job best avoided.
Amazing job cleaning up that dinghy!
Metal boats don't have that problem.
Aluminium and steel has high ductility, i.e. they can bend a lot and then return to the stable position - with no short or long term damage at all.

You might want to start saving peanut butter jars. Why you ask? I will keep moisture and bugs out of your pasta, grits, etc. We also keep cranberry jugs with handles for the same purpose for the larger quantities like rice.

I had to comment because "BARNACLES" on the thumbprint shot for this video reminded me of my son -- when he was about six years old, "Spongebob Squarepants" was his favorite show and he was really interested in swearing, but knew he wasn't allowed to say bad words. He started declaring "BARNACLES" whenever he felt the need to swear! Haha!

Penelope probably will have antifouling on it, but the dingy doesn't, so thats why the dingy looks like that, but Penelope will be fine

Using a halyard on the mast, haul your dinghy out of the water on the side of your boat and lash it secure to the side when you're not using it. You'll reduce the growth on the bottom.
The way you film reminds me of Tati, Ozu, scandinavian films like Kitchen stories and the american Box of moonlight, take care.

Hint for rowing - the oars can almost skim the water when out of the water, much more efficient 😎 than lifting them over a 1ft especially in such calm water

You should wear a wrist lanyard attached to the cut out on your outboard fall overboard and you can get run over by your dinghy.plus you should wear a life jacket you cannot stay afloat if you are unconscious, I lost a dear friend who young and a good swimmer.he fell out of his dinghy the dinghy went around in a circle hit knocked him out and he drowned because he had no life jacket on.
My thoughts exactly. Im sorry for your loss. There was a gentleman fishing alone in a deep lake by us in early spring. Very cold water. No life jacket or safety line on the motor. Somehow he fell out and someone reported the boat going full speed in circles. He sadly drowned. When running in our boat our family always wears life jackets and uses that safety strap to the motor. They are called accidents for a reason.

Now, I'm sure you get this a lot, so apologies if I'm revisiting an old topic but ... ever since starting, I've thought there something very familiar about Lou, but it wasn't till this episode when Lou's in the water, cap turned back, pulling the dingy towards shore that I realised he's the splitting image of Harpo Marx. After waching you scrape and scrape .... and then cook and cook .... Just wondering if you could eat barnacles .... they are a mollusk Yummy ...
There is a easier way to clean your dinghy. Sealife scrapes off a lot easier if it is dead. If you are not going to need your Dinghy for a few days. Time dependant upon sun weather etc then leave it upside down on your deck for a few days. There are also biodegradable cleaning products which help with the job as obviously you want to remove the sealife as gently as possible to avoid damage or wear to your dinghy. Note it is IMPORTANT to get the right product for your dinghy material.
the Annies cheddar vegan mac is even better: it tastes like Kraft!
Do you have to worry about Barnacles on the sailboat?
If you enjoyed rowing that dinghy look our for an opportunity to row a proper boat designed to be rowed with proper oarlocks and oars. A much more satisfying experience and a real workout too.
