    The Road to Santiago is a new documentary about one mans walk along the Christian pilgrimage called Camino de Santiago.
    After a near death experience whilst falling from a 70ft waterfall in Thailand, an event which transformed his life, Alan Field gave up a life of crime to follow his dreams and become a filmmaker, going on to win numerous awards including a Bafta (BBC1 The Street) but he still had another dream to achieve. That dream was to meet the author of his favourite book: The Alchemist.
    Only in order to meet the author Paulo Coelho he first had to walk along the 800km pilgrimage along the French route and before long he begins to re-encounter with himself, his own faith and his own personal connection to this ancient road.

    Traveled from HAWAII USA....Wife and I finished the Camino just over a week ago. We're both 62yrs old...the journey was spiritually phenomenal, fellowshipping with Christ along the WAY. Rain, Wind, Pain and the beauty of knowing Christ was right there beside us all the way to Santiago!.....Glory be to Christ, Forever!

    I finished at 72 years old, the Camino CF from SJPP to Santiago, two weeks ago , wish I had seen this film/documentary before I went to France/Spain for the Camino Walk , and the walk I did every inch of it on my two old tired and crying feet in 34 days , as hard emotionally and physically , draining it was. I would not not trade the Camino experience for anything in the world. Camino broke me down , then build me up every day , with spiritual guidance , energy and strength that I never knew I have. Thank you Alan, for making a wonderful , touching to the heart and soul , this film. Bless you. I felt the pain and tears and joy of it all.BUEN CAMINO .. Cheers !

    This is one of the most open and honest Camino videos I've seen. Anyone who has ever walked the Camino de Santiago will recognise many of the trials you went through.
    You did a great job of filming the route and what's involved in doing it. I love how you also showed us something about some of the other people you met along the way and how you shared your ups and downs.
    I also met many pilgrims who were inspired by Paulo Coelho, particularly Brazilians. I read his book El Peregrino on returning from my pilgrimage journey in 2018, so it wasn't my reason for going. I think that those of us who do go on this epic journey by foot often find that our reasons for going change along the way. It certainly strips us bare emotionally at certain points. Like you, I also felt this was a type of cleansing process (the beginning of healing a pain inside). In normal day-to-day life we just don't allow ourselves the time to stop and just be. The mind, body and soul is crying out for it, but rarely do we listen because the ego is in control most of the time. On the Camino de Santiago, the ego takes a battering and eventually has to be silenced. That's how the light gets in and, eventually, how the light gets out.
    Buen Camino Peregrino.

    • @alanfieldfilms
      @alanfieldfilms  2 роки тому +10

      Mark thank you, that’s such a lovely message, not for what you said about the film, but your reflection of the Camino and of your own journey… it truly strips you bare and a chance to rebuild yourself personally, and with luck emotionally and mentally. It’s fruits are felt long after the Camino ends… so I hope your journey continues in joy and health

    • @CaminoAir
      @CaminoAir 2 роки тому +2

      There is a sign on a house in Santiago that reads: "There is a crack in everything. That is what lets the light in." I take that to mean the same as what you said about our egos being battered along the Camino. The ego is our false defense against our own sense of unworthiness. I don't know if pilgrimage routes were originally created for this exact purpose (knowingly and deliberately), or if it was more of a ritual to complete, but this is the effect that something like the Camino has. There is no arguing with reality and the Camino is a reality you have to accept on its terms.

      @@CaminoAir the pilgrimage routes were developed by Catholic pilgrims who were given a penance after confessing their sins in Catholic confession by the priest.
      While the sins are forgiven in confession the debt to God remains. Some personal act or sign to God of the sinners repentance therefore helps atone for the wrongs..
      We can also do penance for the sins of others and offer it to God in a prayer.

The kindness of people on the Camino is my abiding memory, that and the various people you meet. Alan - My study at Liverpool left me a life long Liverpudlian even if when I am in New York Long Island, I often try to listen to Radio Merseyside. Camino captured my mind as I finished my first Novel. My research to find my way to walk the Camino brought me to your video, Wonderfully made. The opening scene of the Liverpool train station connected me to my student days. The narrative and the simplicity woven with your renewed faith in Catholicism - universal church and your renewed faith in our dear Mother Mary's care for us reinvigorated my resolve to do the Camino. I also bought Paolo Coelho's Pilgrimage as a companion to the Alchemist presented by my son. I wish you the very best and when I visit Merseyside I would be honored to enjoy a pint at the Phil off Hardman. "You'll never walk alone."

    I have watched many camino videos before and after my own camino in 2006. But this is the very first one that truly captures the spiritual aspect of this pilgrimage. I admire our man (and some of his friends) who was so open about his Catholicism and his love for our Blessed Mother. My journal contains many stories of encounters with the kind locals who were very helpful and hospitable, as well as stories of instant friendships with other peregrinos. I was lucky - only one blister in 24 days, no rain except on my very last day on my way to Finisterre. A friend has been wanting to walk the walk. I will send her this video and hopefully, it would be the one to make her say Si, Si. To all peregrinos, past, present and future, Buen Camino for the rest of your life.

    Well done Alan, yes it is an amazing journey of mind body and soul ! My wife and I completed the Camino in 2015, we had both retired, 65 and 66 and both third time around ( marriages ) we had only met 6 months before, were both Trampers here in New Zealand so were quite fit. Our journey began the same as yours and also found the first day to Roncavalis a gut buster ! How initial intention was to walk to Santiago, after staying the night the next day a decision was made to carry on to Finister as it was going so well meeting so many people from all over the world, chatting with young people that wanted to know why at our age would we be doing this instead of lying on the couch with a couple of bears watching sport on tv ! lol, na, we so much enjoy nature walks back here in NZ and some great tramping spots so close to home. We stayed another day in Finister then another action plan, lets walk to Muxia ! so up and away for two days ending up in Muxia. Thoughts ! the journey has never ever left our minds, would we do it again, possibly ! have been looking at Portugal but of course Covid stuffed that up and since then I have just about finished rebuilding our house. Relationship ! iot was a very good test both of us, my wife Diane asked me to move in with her as she said we couldn't have done this journey without each others companionship, this was about learning to help each other overcome some obstacles and it became so easy for us and life for us has never been better. It took fifty days for us to do in excess of 1000 ks, Diane had 7.5 Kg in backpack and I had 8 kg, we were away fro NZ for 3 mths, a mind blowing experience for a guy that head only travelled to Australia before ! Cheers from NZ

    Fortunately UA-cam produced your video in my recommended list this evening. It is one of the very best (of dozens) that I have seen. Very heartfelt, very natural and very well presented and produced. I'm Irish. I manage to get enough time off work each year to walk two or three weeks along various Camino routes. Unfortunately it is quite common for people to have to return home for family matters and bereavements. And don't be hard on yourself for any moments like at 49 minutes. Walking the Camino and the circumstances of your days and nights will cause a lot of energy to become activated within you. Some of that is negative energy which has been blocked/building up and it can be reactive while it 'sorts itself out' and gets absorbed into the gradual positive energy of the experience.

    One of the best of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage films. I honestly had never heard of this pilgrimage until this past week. I didn't even know about the major motion picture "The Way" before this. As I write this, next week that film is being shown in movie theaters for just one showing in theaters all over America. I've got my ticket. As it so happens, I have a friend who is doing the short version from Sarria into Santiago. I have decided, I am going to start the process of making preparations to do my own Camino. I don't know yet if I will just do a short version or a full one starting in France. I periodically will go do a weeklong silent retreat at The Abbey Gethsemani just outside of Bardstown, Kentucky. This is the Abbey that Thomas Merton became a monk and a priest later in his life. Merton's essential message was that if we are silent, that is often the truest way to find God within ourselves. When I go to Abbey Gethsemani, and have gotten into the rhythms of the place, I feel that I find some bit of God inside of me. Doing the Camino will just be by another way to find not just some aspects of God within, but some new parts of myself. These will be my only expectations. I also hope to make some of my own connections along the way with fellow perrigrinos that I've seen others find in these documentary films about the Camino.

    • @alanfieldfilms
      @alanfieldfilms  Рік тому +1

      Thankyou Michael for your message and your openness with your own journey. A silent retreat is a powerful experience to help quieten your own mind and sense the presence of God. I think when your walking and spend most of the day in silence and this continuous motion it also brings a similar experience too. So I’m sure you will have an amazing Camino. Enjoy

    Great film, love how you narrated the adventure of “el Camino” I wonder what ever happened to those people you met during the making of the film, especially Sun joo, such a young person and so mature to do el Camino by her self, I wonder where she is now, I know this was filmed back 2011 a lot of things have happened, hope she’s having a good life

      I tried so much to find Sun Joo but she didn’t do social media even at that age, and me being lost on the way didn’t even ask for a contact! But the Italian guy yes we emailed and he enjoyed the movie and the Irish guys at the very end inspired me to walk they’re pilgrimage across Ireland, a more religious inspired walk, The Road to Knock is on here if you wanted to watch it. Thank you for your comment

    Like many others posting here, I've watched a ton of Santiago travelogs. Yours is one of the best I've encountered. Your honest journey was meaningful to watch; it was well told and beautifully photographed. You are a quintessential peregrino, sir. I just wanted to reach out to you and say: much respect!

      And I would like to reply with a huge thankyou as it means so much to me and the director who most people don’t realise walked almost every step too carrying a camera! Thanks again! Ultreya!
