Camino de Santiago and Finisterre - Documentary Film

  • This film documents the precise, minute detail journey of the people on the Camino de Santiago and the Camino de Finisterre in 2015 and their experience, whether spiritual or physical, across 1000 km of northern Spain. Although I am providing narratives or storytelling of events, thoughts, feelings and observations I simply represent all people walking el Camino.
A chief theme of a narrative is whether people walking el Camino are pilgrims or trekkers. Is a pilgrimage seeking something missing inside of ourselves?
The film also shows constant changes taking place in nature and within us while walking el Camino and enduring hardship through unknown physical challenges on the way.

I walked the Camino last year. I begun on April 26th. I still miss it. I hope I will do it again before I die. I am 74 years old, I had and still have cancer but that did not stop me. I just hope I will have the energy to complete it. For the people that are considering, the sooner you do it the better, you will have a great life adventure to tell others and will inspire you to explore the world. Lots of life lessons to be learned even for an old man like me. Do it, enjoy it even if you have some pain because it is part of life, be grateful , be helpful, you will be a better person and you did it yourself without even knowing it. When you reach your destination at the Camino is not the end of the journey, it is the turn around of your life journey that will never end. Buen Camino future pilgrims, buen camino.......

I did my camino in 2006, two weeks after my last day of work. It will remain the most memorable experience I have ever had, and this documentary brought back so many memories. One of them was my stay in the albergue in Grañon (featured in the docu). It started well - Mass in the adjoining church, then communal meal with some pilgrims preparing spaghetti and salad, then plates and food being passed around, and finally, being serenaded by some Spanish pilgrims - and ending not so well - in the middle of the night, I woke up itching all over as bedbugs were feasting on me! I got up and took a shower and did not return to my sleeping spot. Memories are made of this.
One minor quibble - I wish Chris had more footage about his interactions with other pilgrims. Other than mentioning some names near the end, no faces, no shared meals, no one helping him with his blisters, etc., were shown. For me, other than the spiritual aspect of the camino (I was definitely a pilgrim), instant friendship was one of the best parts of the camino. When I reached Santiago de Compostela, what a pleasure to see friends I made along the way whom I thought I would never see again, and there they were! What a reunion!

This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on youtube. (according to my taste).
There is no distracting, shitty popmusic at the background. The atmosphere of the route is captured in a wonderful way. I know how difficult it is, to capture good video and sound, so I am pretty amazed about what you have accomplished. The use of a tripod is very welcome, but even out of hand, you make fantastic shots. Thanks for all the effort you have put in this very good production.

This is one of the most thoughtful films & reminds me in so many ways about the power of the Camino. To those who express disappointment that this peregrino's emotions are not expressed as much as physical: it is my experience (having walked the whole of the Camino de Santiago 500 miles in 5 weeks in late 2013) that this pilgrimage reveals itself to you long after you have left Santiago. My best advice: walk. Come up with your own experiences. And Buen Camino to you.

Kevin Card very powerful ley lines follow the way . Many if the churches that pilgrims visit are built over those vortexes . Is not about the passport you get in this places but stepping on them , they help you in misterios ways .

My wife and I completed this Camino in 2015, was fantastic to get to the last marker 0.00 ks ! but then decided to carry on to Muxia ! a time in our lives we will never forget. We were aged 65 and me 66 years young, we have contemplated doing the Portugal Camino but of course Covid put paid to many adventures, we completed over 1000 ks in fifty days taking all the hardest routes, Buen Camino !

Of all the camino films I've watched lately(a lot!), this is my favourite. Unpretentious and thorough, clearly a lot of care and effort has gone into the recording editing and production. I felt like I was on the walk with you. I love your narrative style, your humour and humility. Unnless I've misunderstood, every time you filmed yourself walking off, you had to stop, turn aroound and go pick up and pack up the camera again. That's some commitment! Especially the time you ran off a long way! Thank you for making this for us armchair pilgrims.

Absolutely the best documentary I have seen on El Camino de Santiago and Finisterre. Having walked the Camino, albeit not the 1,000 + kms that you have done, but the little I did, was absolutely magical. I thank you so much for a part of you that you shared with all of us pilgrims.

EXCELLENT video presentation. Refreshing to see many of the places and recollecting the train of thoughts that passed my mind during my own Camino Frances, August 30-Oct 8, 2016. My first Camino. Now (October 2018), I have completed a total of four: Camino Del Norte (2017), both Camino Ingles and Camino Portugues Da Costa (Sept-Oct 2018) . The Camino de Santiago is "willfully addictive," incomparable and unforgettable. One can not or may not comprehend these expressions unless one also went through a Camino.

Your documentary has provided much valuable information but best of all demonstrated that it's possible for everyday people to share in this demanding but very rewarding experience. Happy trails, Tony.

This video brought memories of my first Camino in June 2005. The Camino has never left my life, it's always present in my life. I still think of the Camino as a Communion between me and God. It was beautifull, a great learning experience, a life awakening and a rebirth for me. It was the happiest and the most physical pain I ever had in my life, but it was all worth it and I would do it all over again. I also went to do another Camino Walk in 2010.
Thank you for this video! This video has great photography, it shows all important places, it shows all the real panorama, the landscape as it is on the Camino. The sounds are amazing just like on the Camino, the birds singing, the sound of the wind, the music, etc. It was all great to see all over again. Thank you!
    Buen Camino to all Pilgrims.

Very well done. I like it so much as your video covered a lot of the places, sights and trails I went through in my own Camino Frances (Sept-Oct 7, 2016. I did it for cultural/history and physical challenge given that I had undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery 18 years ago. That surgery caused me to walk relatively slow (3 miles/hour= 4.8 kms/hr on flat terrain). But I feel and think the same saved me from any blister or any kind of leg injury. I lost 15 pounds and my good cholesterol (HDL) went from 35 to 49!! My doctor was happy, as I was, to learn about it. It was a very exhilarating, uniquely satisfying/fulfilling adventure. Spain, its food and the Spanish people in the villages are wonderful. I plan to do another Camino (del Norte) next August-September 2017. Buen Camino!

Wow, thank you. My first hike had been the Camino Frances. And the next year I walked the Camino Frances again but with no camera. The following years I walked many other Caminos. We hiked Caminos because we want to distance ourselves from normal life. We want to step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves. We want to experience something new and different. We may seek fun and enjoyment, self-fulfillment, self-reliance, physical challenge, camaraderie with others or solitude.

I have wanting to do the camino for a long time now . I am 65 in November 2020 . My plan was to walk in 2021 .But with covid I might have to wait a while.
I loved your video, it made me feel i was there. It also helped me think why I do I want to go and what to bring .I have read a lot about the camino John Brierley been my go to man.
But you leave me thinking it is now or never for me. Thank you for your candid thoughts and insight to what it is really like. Thank you very much.

I agree with going for it and not putting it off. I was there last spring and was thinking I'd have to wait till 2022 before doing it again, but now I don't think I'll wait. I've been on various sites where folks are still walking now and they're saying the alburgues and restaurants are so happy to have pilgrims again. Go for it John.

A very good film and I enjoyed it til the last frames. I saw a lot of places I remember from my own walk in the same perod, but in 2002. Thank you for recording your walk as a pilgrim and as a walker.

Thank you so much for this documentary.....it would have taken a long time to put together but well worth it! My only disappointment is at the end you say that physically you're in great shape but you do not mention how it affected you mentally and what changes occurred in your thinking. It was obvious that there were a lot of mixed emotions and instead of guessing on my part it would have been great to hear them. The only time you mention any kind of feelings is when you reach Santiago. Anyway, many thanks. I've seen a few videos but this is the only one I felt worth commenting on!

When you pass through Zubiri, I was moved, I had a very beautiful love story, I was with that wonderful person for four years, then we took different paths, but the memory will always be there.
