I love seeing these old birds in stock form. If you ever want a modern look a yzf450 rear fender fits like it was made for it. They make a sweet little taillight/tag holder combo that for it also. I think I was $75 in the whole setup and with a new front fender it really does the bike well. I have an 86 with with a custom 13.8:1 CR piston, cam regrind, oversize valves and port work. I removed the decompressor so I could turn 9000rpm. Also removed the electric starter to run a FCR flatslide pumper carb. It's the worst thing to start, has literally thrown me over the bars. Having the Hotstart on the carb is my only saving grace.
I had two KLR600 and had no problems since I had them. To start the motor, you slow kick three times, then a hard kick to start the motor. 1984 KLR had a start low compression release built in the engine.
I want say that 1984 KLR was a rocket, and my friend and I had the KLR 600 104 to a 106 mph on a open road many of times. We let Kawasaki now that it need an diffuser or filter on the filter drain hose to keep sand from going in the engine. Doing wheels it would let oil out through the breather, and it would cause engine to be weaken do to high pressures.
I've taken my built 86 to 130mph and it was one of the sketchiest things I've ever done. I've regeared it since and can only squeeze 100 full tilt at about 8800rpm but it gets there damn fast. 🤣
They should bring back this beauty back to respond to the Honda XR650L and Suzuki DR 650 even if it's electric start only. I have a 2003 KLR 650 but I prefer the enduro look of the 600. Plus from what I understand, it is signicantly weighter
How’s your kick stand holding up ? I know the temptation to stand on the left foot peg. I also have an 84, a terrible beast to start fortunately I have lots of experience with big singles. The aluminum stand’s don’t hold up very well. Because PO’s had never figured out how to dart it, I have had to replace both the stand and kick starter. I was lucky to find a NOS kick starter and a decent used stand. Take a close look at your stand.
good afternoon I have a kawasaki klr600 model 84 but the wiring is destroyed as soon as i fixed the wiring but the battery is missing how is the positibo connected if you could help me i would appreciate it in advance thanks
you ar not in exhaust strok but in compressions stroke you just moved the piston closer to top and its starts when you kick it over TDC,,, you cant start it ,. if piston is over tdc
When the bike started, I felt cold shivers in my body 😅 miss my old KLR 🥺
I wish I'd known this in the early 90s when I had a KLR600. I sometimes spent half an hour trying to start it.

You mentioned this being what works for you for a warm start. Do you find the same technique works for your KLR 600 cold start?
yup 8 of mine were new. 5 were used and i refurbished them...still have not obtained a 2022 KLR....yet,....
