    I owned that exact bike in 1983 (when i was 33) ! It is an impressive wheelie and stoppie bike. I remember sitting at a traffic light, when it turned green i would pull a wheelie in first gear, and then without dropping the front wheel, i would just row through all the gears until i was in 5th. So when i finally dropped the wheel it would screech and smoke just like a plane landing cause it was never spinning the whole time 😁. Excellent review, loved the flip flop starts, the highway acceleration and the c-o-n-f-i-d-e-n-c-e 👍

    I bought the 1983 XL600 new in Sydney Australia, when I was a teenager. It performed very well, until it had it's first service by the Honda dealer. From that day onwards, it never idled correctly and kept stalling. The Honda dealer could not fix it and gave up, and Honda Australia did not want to know about the problem. So after 6 months of hell, including legal action, I was forced to sell it. at a loss. Apparently it was a common problem with that bike during that time in Australia.
    I am super impressed with your kick starting technique. I was never that good. Thanks for a fantastic video, that brought back a lot of memories.

    She’s an absolute beauty! My first motorcycle, my dad bought for me when I was 9 years old, was a 1976 Honda Elsinore MR50, and that’s where it all began. My older brother got the Elsinore 125, the dual sport version. There is nothing like a vintage Honda, especially the dirt oriented ones. I wish I still had every old Honda I ever owned. I would have my own little museum. Lol...

    Awesome bike!! Super simple and bullet proof. I'm a Honda guy to the end of my time on this planet. I bought a 1983 Honda XL250R brand new in Feb 1984 and still own it. I love it and ride it often with over 13,000 miles. It struggles on the highway but kicks ass off road with the sprocket combination. I really struggled back then deciding between the 250 and 600 and finally settled on the 250 for the type of riding I did back then, 99.9% offroad. I often wondered if I should have bought the 600. A few years ago I added a 2018 Honda XR650L and it's awesome off road and on. I love the acceleration and the low end torque. I've taken it on a couple backcountry discovery routes which were spectacular. I don't think I'll ever get rid of either one.

    If no one mentioned it already, when it floods out, hold the compression lever down(if you have one on the handle bars like mine did), hold the throttle wide open and kick it over about five times (it won't kick back as long as you're holding the compression release). Then start it normally. Mine wasn't near as pretty as yours.

My daily driver for in town is a red ’84 XL125R, since doing constant wheelies (can’t resist it really) with the 500 will cost me my driver license over here nowadays. I recommend looking at the ’84 XL200R too. It’s light and nimble and drives much better than the XL185S, especially if you are taller. Keep making cool vid’s about these bikes 😊

    I have had good performance, 55-60 MPG, with significantly more comfortable riding with a 39 rear sprocket versus the stock 43, while I switch to a 13 front sprocket for dirt riding and use the stock 15 tooth for street. I got my 1983 XL600R in early fall of 1983 and recently finished my 2nd overall of it. Still original piston and crank, but replaced cam, camchain, and various bearings and seals of course. Have a trip planned for this summer to visit a friend in Colorado, which is about 1100 miles east and may make it down to visit friends in Arizona, depending on how it goes. No long trips like this in over 20 years as the bike sat for years needing repair when I was working in Alaska but now am retired from toiling near the tundra. Starting this bike for me is not as easy as it looks for you, but if I kick it over about 5 times with compression release and then choke for 1 kick and IF no start then OFF with choke and kick, it usually starts with 2 real kicks. Yes, it floods easily and so usually only one kick with choke on. Use Shell Rotella 15W40 full synthetic T6 Diesel oil. Aftermarket front fender helps give better cooling to engine and better stability at higher speeds. No top speed test yet since my recent overall, but it will maintain 90 MPH OK for a time and will see at some point its top speed. I used to get some instability at around 80MPG but with better balanced tires and the new front fender that doesn't flop about as the original, it is now stable at 80-90 MPH. Do have a small windshield on it with bags on the side and a locking box on the back. I can go grab a fair amount of groceries with it, and it will haul enough to make for decent camping when traveling. My friends with motorcycles in the past no longer ride, but I will visit with them at times, or those who are still among the living, non-LOL.

    Next to my first motorcycle (1970 CT70) my 1983 Honda XL600R was the best! I bought it from San Clemente Honda July 5th 1983 for $2599. I named him Gandalf and had the supertrapp like this one and the /cycle World mod 3- 1" holes in the airbox cover. I got stationed on Oahu in the Coast Guard and Gandalf was shipped over. !n 1987 I rode the XL to the Drag strip whare I entered a 100 mile endurance race. I had to safety wire my front caliber and oil bolts, remove my lights and blinkers and put street tires on it. I finished 4th overall racing against Yamaha FJ's and Suzuki two stroke Gamma's and such. 5th pinned down the drag strip into a chicane down shift to 3rd and back it into a left hairpin turn....I sold him 2007 with 37,0000+ miles for $1800. I did shed a tear as he disappeared around the corner. Never left me stranded.

I love electric starts! BTW; The RFVC acronym stands for Radial Four Valve Combustion. These have true Hemispherical (HEMI) heads. The valves are splayed (angled) radially in the combustion chamber. I guess one could also say that RFVC stands for,,, Real Funny Valve Cover. CHEERS!

    I'm actually looking at one now to possibly buy. I started in 82 with an XL250R then moved to steet bikes. Does the front end get light at high speed? The 250 seemed to if I remember right. The older XL500 was a wheelie machine too.

    That’s a great old bike but so is the XL185. I would probably keep the DR650 and trade the 600 for a 185 as well. I have a KLR650 and a DR250. A DR650 would fit right in the middle, weight and size not power or cc’s. I’m tempted to buy one, but it would need to replace the KLR and I can’t let that go yet. Maybe when I have a bigger garage 😂

    • @AnandaNineOne
      @AnandaNineOne  11 місяців тому +1

      I love the KLR, but it’s a little too heavy for my taste! 😂

    • @insatiable_mind
      @insatiable_mind 11 місяців тому

      @@AnandaNineOne I agree with that 100% but it’s so comfortable and is setup for a lot of secure storage, which makes even heavier and more difficult to use off-road. I’m also holding on to it for longer highway trips but as I get more minimalist with my luggage options I think more about trading for a DR650.

    N/B If ever a bike needed an electric start this is it, you can fit the electric start from other XLs & XRs but it is a hassle, battery trays, new stater plates, coils, switch gear etc etc,
    A firm in Czechoslovakia used to make a kit but they've stopped making them,

    Cool! I think your choice of 185 is good. I don’t like new ones because they run too lean and overheat as a result of stupid emissions laws.
    BTW, where are you originally from? I’m guessing from your accent.
