  • I bought this KLR 650 bike as a project recently. The front wheel was stolen and the previous owner let the bike sit after the theft. It had been sitting for 4 years by the time I bought it. A new battery and spark plug along with a carburetor cleaning is all it took to get it running. Thanks for watching!

I resurrected a 1996 that I rode the hell outof forthe next ten years. Sold it .
Two years later in 2016 got an 03 .
    Still riding it.
Gen 1 KLRs are very resilient machines.
Doesnt take a whole lot to get them up and running again.
    My favorite motorcycle

My 1985 KLR 600 has been sitting for over 20 years in a nice dry climate climate-controlled basement. I may try to start it up this summer. I bet it will start right up with some fresh fluids and battery.

Excellent! Just finishing working on my newly acquired 1999 that had not run for 10 years. 13000km. Took me a bit longer than you to make it run. Just went through the Doohickey mod. Long but not difficult. The tension spring was bottomed out.
Hope to be able to enjoy the KLR this summer.
    Great video! Cheers!

Don't front on the (K)il(L)er (R)oach! You knew darn well it would run 😄. Got my 2022 Adventure model last week. Hope I get 20 years out of it!

Of course it will run it’s Japanese, that beautiful motorcycle would run if it sat 20 years. You can’t beat Kawasaki reliability.

i just picked up one of these yesterday for a cheap price. we managed to start it on 2 year old fuel so i had hopes that it would be something i could ride fairly soon with a little bit of carb clean and a new battery. still in process of cleaning the carb as it was very dirty. will only run on choke right now and has zero throttle response, so something is clogged up bad, even after my initial carb clean which included the jets. gotta dig more.

@@gavinleeroscom1167 mine cranked without much trouble, first time firing it up did take a while. what helped for me was taking the carb off and handing it over to a buddy to get ultrasonic cleaned. bike did give me a bit of trouble trying to run correctly, air box was filled with spider webs and what not, spark was inconsistent. bikes thatve been sitting for so long can cause headaches haha. Hope i could help

@@gavinleeroscom1167 that's a tough part to get, i got all the parts for my bike used from facebook marketplace. i tried looking for those types of ads where someone has a complete klr that theyre parting out, i bet you could buy a wiring setup from there.

Sure hope you found and replaced the plastic choke valve. If it's cracked or broken it will make all the difference in the world in how that bike performs and what kind of power you get out of it. I've had it happen to me, and it drove me nuts trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

Your putting a bit too much pressure on the float, while your working on it, it takes very little pressure to damage the seat or offset its level
