Awesome the idea of using the fins to better feel the arms drag in the gliding phase of the breast stroke. I am new to swimming and strangely enough the breaststroke is my prefered swimming stroke even though it is by far my slowest. Maybe because I am not a competitor so I do not try to over power the movement.I like so much the gliding feeling that you get in the breaststroke, I simply want to improve my glide. The intricacy and timing of the movements in the breastsroke make it so enjoyable. Thank you for sharing and contributing to my learning of such a wonderful stroke that will do for the many years to come.
You are welcome, Marc! Breaststroke is the most difficult stroke to do well and to get the timing right. It requires a different set of tools than the other three strokes. Hola !!
You have very little time to take advantage of the coupling motion of the upper body and head in breaststroke. In other words, you need to be very fast with the kicking cycle. Finish the breast kick with an up kick and toes pointed backward
AJ Lerner You are correct. We don't advocate using the streamline position when racing, but we do for drilling and practicing. Then, when racing one is more likely to tighten the front end.
All elite breaststrokers are extending the arms forward far, hyperextending the shoulders. In the 50 sprint, there is not even enough time with the high stroke rate to get the head down as low as it is in the 100 or 200...but it should still get down.
theraceclub Awesome video! My breastroke has been killing my IMs. This has definitely given me some new things to work on including recovering my hands and forearm out of the water. One question, in the video you state that the "superman" method is slower than the streamline method. In the comment above you state that you don't advocate the streamline position when racing. This seems a bit contradictory. Is it only in the 50 where you don't advocate it due to the high stroke rate?
+David Lunt We don't advocate using a streamline when racing ever. We advocate pushing the fingers as far forward as possible, basically getting into a streamline position without the hands being on top of each other while racing.
Is breaststroke with dolphin kick (without fins) faster than with the normal kick ? And is breaststroke with dolphin kick to butterfly swimming a big step ? Thank you for your help and sorry for my bad english. It's along time ago i' ve spoken english. Greetings from germany

Speed and drag forces are not exponentially related, actually it is a quadratic relation. Great video coach, thanks
Thanks. Yes, surface (wave) drag is quadratic to swimmer's speed. Pressure drag and friction are squared to swimmer's speed.

how to couple the dolphin power in breaststroke? How and when we do the up-kick to recover the leg, and the down-kick to kick back?
You have very little time to take advantage of the coupling motion of the upper body and head in breaststroke. In other words, you need to be very fast with the kicking cycle. Finish the breast kick with an up kick and toes pointed backward
Which IS faster breaststoke pull with flutter kicks or with Dolphin kick?
Neither is legal in competition. If you are using them for a breaststroke drill it depends how fast your dolphin kick and freestyle kick speeds are.
If this is true, then why do the best breatroke swimmer eg: Adam peaty or Ruta meilytute do not use the streamline position in their strokes?
The drill isn't about the streamline necessarily, it's about exaggerating the sensation of a tight glide and good head position.
AJ Lerner You are correct. We don't advocate using the streamline position when racing, but we do for drilling and practicing. Then, when racing one is more likely to tighten the front end.

Can you use a dolphin kick with the breast stroke in a race, legally? It would seem to me that would be a much more efficient method.
+eugene bell Not legally. You can take one dolphin kick during the breaststroke pullout and that's it.
Great
Drag force isn't exponentially related to speed, it's quadratic
You are correct, the point being that you have to fight for even small increases in velocity! 👍

00:00:01,044 --> 00:00:05,115
One of the ways we can show you and let you actually feel the difference
2
00:00:05,140 --> 00:00:07,180
between going this way
3
00:00:07,200 --> 00:00:11,000
and v.s. really being in a tight streamline is using the fins.
4
00:00:11,080 --> 00:00:12,800
So we're going to put the fins on.
5
00:00:13,260 --> 00:00:18,620
In this time, we're gonna go a two kick down drill, dolphin kick instead of breastkick.
6
00:00:18,640 --> 00:00:24,040
We get a little more speed and the drag forces are exponentially related to speed.
7
00:00:24,040 --> 00:00:28,580
So when you have more speed, you feel more drag, or the drag is affecting more.
8
00:00:28,580 --> 00:00:34,560
So you're gonna go with the superwoman or superman pose, which is what most breaststrokers do,
9
00:00:34,600 --> 00:00:39,220
with your head kind of in alignment with your hand separated as you move forward
10
00:00:39,320 --> 00:00:44,060
two kicks underwater, take a little pull, breaststroke pull, get back down into this position,
11
00:00:44,180 --> 00:00:49,560
not into what I call the hyper streamline, but just into the normal relaxed position.
12
00:00:49,620 --> 00:00:52,540
And then we're gonna do it again in the streamlined position.
13
00:00:53,540 --> 00:01:01,140
We try to impress upon our campers at the Race Club that it's worth the extra effort to get into a hyper streamline in breaststroke.
14
00:01:01,420 --> 00:01:07,820
Rebecca Soni did not become an Olympic champion in breaststroke by relaxing her arms and head.
15
00:01:08,480 --> 00:01:17,740
The two kick down dolphin drill with fins on allows you to feel a noticeable increase in frontal drag that relaxed arm and head position creates.
16
00:01:18,420 --> 00:01:23,520
It may be more comfortable and easier for her to be in this superwoman pose.
17
00:01:23,560 --> 00:01:26,100
But it's definitely not faster.
18
00:01:26,460 --> 00:01:35,140
With the fins on generating more speed you will feel the difference in drag between this relaxed position and the hyper streamline.
19
00:01:36,100 --> 00:01:44,640
Zach Hayden, a world class breaststroker, uses the old school technique that was tied years ago back in the sixties when I was growing up,
20
00:01:45,040 --> 00:01:48,860
when the world record in the men's 100 meters was about 1:07.
21
00:01:49,340 --> 00:01:51,840
Today the world record is 58 seconds.
22
00:01:51,840 --> 00:01:59,180
The huge drop in time. And I think a lot of it has to do with the improved technique from streamlining the front end of the breaststroke.
23
00:01:59,700 --> 00:02:05,900
All right, Rebecca. So, now you kind of have a sense of what it's like with the drag to feel when you're in a non streamline position.
24
00:02:06,040 --> 00:02:08,220
Now I want you to get into a hyper streamline.
25
00:02:08,240 --> 00:02:10,660
This is the tightest streamline you can get, chin down,
26
00:02:10,660 --> 00:02:16,800
elbow squeezed together behind your head, pulling your shoulders as far forward as you can, getting as lean as you can.
27
00:02:16,980 --> 00:02:21,000
You're gonna stay underwater with the same intensity of the kick for two kicks
28
00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:25,820
And you're going to compare the feeling of that, versus being in this position.
29
00:02:27,660 --> 00:02:37,240
When you contrast the typical relax breaststroke with a modern hyper streamline front end, using the same strength of dolphin kicks,
30
00:02:37,260 --> 00:02:44,120
it's astounding how much further and faster you can go with each kick, with the tighter narrow shape.
31
00:02:45,660 --> 00:02:53,160
You're gonna appreciate, from watching Rebecca above, that she's now gliding through the water, with much less frontal drag after each kick.
32
00:02:53,720 --> 00:03:03,080
Notice how she tucks her head down after the breath, squeezes the elbows together, and pushes her arms forward, as straight and tight as possible.
33
00:03:04,840 --> 00:03:13,860
So many breaststrokers recover with their arms and hands completely submerged, creating a huge amount of frontal drag as they push them forward.
34
00:03:14,320 --> 00:03:19,200
Even masters swimmers that are unable to get the same shoulder elevation as these two,
35
00:03:19,300 --> 00:03:26,040
can learn to elevate their hands and forearms over the top of the water in the recovery, reducing frontal drag.
36
00:03:26,820 --> 00:03:34,760
It's almost as if the great breaststrokers lunge over the top of the water in the recovery, rather than plowing through the water.
37
00:03:35,140 --> 00:03:42,140
With enough flexibility in the lower back and some force in the kick, we can effectively copy this motion.
