I tried using the neck muscles today and it instantly make my fly more effortless. I actually thought popping the shoulders out of the water meant that you were exerting good strength on the pull, so that you have more momentum from the height for the dive. Similar to the breaststroke where popping more of your upper body out of the water gave you more momentum and a better body position for the forward drive. Seems like in both cases there's a trade off between momentum and streamline? I will definitely be practicing incorporating the neck into my fly. Before I was trying to propel my shoulders out of the water which was very tiring, but now I see how swimming long distance fly is even possible (except for my leg cramps). Great tip!
Many thanks for this video! This is the best drill for butterfly, period. It is difficult to perform, as with the drill the recovery phase can be partly underwater, but it really helps to understand how fly works. My fly immediately improved a lot, and now I see that butterfly can be fun as well.
Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation coach Gary! I tried that drill and wow it really helped me for the butterfly. A lot of énergie is used to fight the drag when we don’t think about staying as horizontal as possible. At one point I was reducing my arms push and increased my arms cadence to keep my forward momentum but I quickly realized that reducing the drag is a superior approach. Same thing with the breaststroke, there is so much similarities between those two strokes.
We just studied Olympic champion, Maggie MacNeil, She undulates very little and bends her knees on the kick less than any other swimmer we have tested.
Great tip, I learned the style with deep wave, but understood the center of mass can´t oscilating that much, getting more muscle effort, loosing streamline and creating resistance. A good image that work for me is the eletromagnetic wave spectrum, best for fly is toward radio wave.
The kick! Thanks so much! Next youtube search "dolphin kick drill" for my next water Rx. Who knew that butterfly could be so interesting? and so possible (for me, anyway)? I love doing the pieces and seeing how they bring the stroke together!
+Jeffrey Wong ua-cam.com/video/Wjcp9DPgClA/v-deo.html Check out our series on "The Fifth Stroke" We have part 1 and 2 released and part 3 in this series comes out next week...
Hi Coach! Thanks for the video. I love butterfly technique and want to prefect it, but confused if its more of propelling, style, breathing, kick or practice all the way?
+Ahmed Hamid Fast butterfly requires strength in all areas, particularly in the kick. Without a good dolphin kick, swimming butterfly is not efficient nor fast.
This is the only drill that I found on youtube to fix "elevated shoulder" problem in butterfly. But it's not an easy drill to do for young swimmer. My 10y old tried without a success. Next time we will try it with fins see if it helps. If she still can't do it, we will try breathing on the side.
Thanks! Fins work much better. I also noticed that my DD lifted her shoulders even on the non-breathing strokes. What caused that? Was that because her arms plunged down instead of pulling backwards? How to fix that?
Can be related to flexibility in the shoulder. The more one can extend the shoulders (point the arms backwards), the less one needs to elevate for the recovery. Sometimes, however, it is simply a bad habit that must be corrected.
Hi Coach, I really want to understand this correctly, so I apologize for having to ask what you meant by "full neck extension as he breath" at 2:07. Does he raise his neck from the full horizontal position (neck straight, face down)? Or do the arm pulls cause his neck to raise naturally? Thank you.
Awesome Many many thanks 🙏 for this video This is the best drill for butterfly thank you so much my butterfly Stock so very good 👍 thank you so much 🙏 sir this dril 💪❤️👍💯
Coach Gary I have a question to ask and would be very interested to know your answer! I always though that the first kick with the arm pull were done to help you get out of the water enough that you can breath. From what I see in this video the neck and head positioning seem to do a pretty good job of helping you breed without that much power requirement from the arm and kicks. Is that true? Does it mean that without much leg and arm power you can swim the butterfly? you will simply not move fast forward? I would have some concern with my arms recovery not having much shoulder mobility. Any trick on the arm recovery? I guess this why you recommend using fins until we are efficient in our kick!
Hi Marc, The kick actually provides four different functions. The main one (if you use them properly and you have the right ankle flexibility and leg strength) is to generate propulsion. they also cause lift for the back end of the body, balance of forces with the pulling arm and help take advantage of the law of inertia by keeping the speed more constant (again, if you use them with a good 6 beat kick)
Bob Bowman teaches and stresses that you don't stress the neck by forcing your chin out by looking up, but to have a relaxed neck and to lead with a flat chest, low chin, and low arm recovery, to minimize drag. In doing so, the swimmer will utilize the strongest anatomical muscles in your body which are your latissimus dorsi and pectoral muscles to drive the upper part of your body forward. I like the drill, but not the way it was taught.
in order to keep the shoulders lower (body more horizontal), extension of the neck is necessary for the breath. MP was nearly fully extended for the breath. One also gains coupling energy by snapping the head down timed with the hand entry and second down kick. If one doesn't extend the neck forward, then one cannot snap it down. Same in breaststroke.
The subtitle, "but you will find doing the butterfly become EARIER", it is supposed to be the word easier. But overall I like the great tips. Thank you so much. Btw, I'm only nine years old! ;D
One should bend the body as little as possible in fly. We just videoed Maggie MacNeil and she bends very little at the hip. Much at the neck. Low profile breath and fast.
Hello. My name is Olek.My dream is swim faster. The Race Club, can you help me? My time on 50 metres butterfly is 33:74, but I want 29:60-30:00 on this year.My time on 100 metres butterfly is 1:20.00, but I want 1:08.70-1:10.00.Correct my times is my greatest DREAM!!!
Everyone else telling that freestyle is the fastest stroke of all 4... Also most efficient one. But u say that butterfly is the fastest among other styles. Just clear it if possible
Butterfly can attain the highest peak speed in elite swimmers, but it is not the fastest nor most efficient stroke. Free is fastest and backstroke is mechanically the most efficient stroke.
Chad uses a full extension of the neck on the breath and while his shoulders elevate more than most butterflyers on the breath, he has the strongest kick of any flyer in the world. I don't think the elevation of the shoulders helps him, but the strength of his kick does.

Good
Shoulder elevation means much more drag. Don't need that in fly!

i know I'm kind of off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Brodie Atlas lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
Excellent
Thanks!
Pls give me an advice about that. To learn dolphin kick, should I use kickboard or pull kick board? Thank you very much 🥰
kickboard or under water to learn dolphin kick.

Yes...please do this drill with fins. Actually, many very young butterflyers swim this way because they need to pause for a rest.

still learning this move. I'm doing breast stroke with butterfly kicks
It is a great drill for fly.
Do I need to use fins for this?
+Combobreaker100 This drill is much better with fins on to maximize propulsion during the first down kick, while skating over the water.
Nioce
Thanks
Great lesson!
I translated this into Korean.

Who is your 50m fly swimmer ??
Olympian Roland Schoeman
Fly is an short axis stroke but the axis is at the neck not the hips

But Gary, Chad Le Clos comes high out of the water when he swims butterfly.
Chad uses a full extension of the neck on the breath and while his shoulders elevate more than most butterflyers on the breath, he has the strongest kick of any flyer in the world. I don't think the elevation of the shoulders helps him, but the strength of his kick does.
