How does a pickup truck stop in 82 feet from 60 mph when the two best stopping production car ( viper acr and gt2 rs) can only manage 87 feet from 60 mph ?
Our pickup is NOT for sale. Ours is a 11 Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4.0 V6. I’ve added a K&N cold air intake, 4” FlowMaster exhaust, tuned exhaust manifold, LineX spray in bed liner, skid plates, running boards, custom 2 tone paint,(Silver over Red) custom interior to match the exterior paint colors. It has a LSD, tow pkg, air shocks. Not only can it haul a yard + of topsoil, but it can haul ass. I’ve street raced 2 Chevys. One with a 5.7 V8 and the other with a 5.3 V8. I kept with them until their governor kicked in at 105mph and then my 4.0 V6 Ranger left them… which I was thankful for, as I felt the torque and hp starting to crap out at 110mph. 😁
I bought a Pro-4X over the competitors for these reasons: long-term reliability of no turbo, best ride quality of the group, great tech, most room for a taller guy like myself, and just as capable as a TRD Pro. Ground clearance was the only negative but that has been fixed with my putting on a 2” lift. Love my Nissan.
I have a 3.5 ecoboost f150 with over 250k miles on original engine and turbos. The idea that they are unreliable is because they are turbochargerd is an outdated notion. Just bought the Ranger and loving it so far!
the ford 2.3 was faster... the rest of the ford ranger is junk all around... i word at a ford dealership and see them trucks falling apart from band new...
@@JOHNJ0HN9111 no clue what you’re taking about. I’ve owned my Ranger for a couple years now and never had one issue. I’m willing to bet if you worked say a Toyota or Nissan dealership where they work on them you’d say the same thing.
I just did a 2700 mile 5 day road trip in a 2023 frontier and It was one of the most comfortable vehicles I have driven. I averaged 22 mpg on the hiway and 16 in town.
Last summer I took my 22 Frontier thru 5 Canadian provinces, 10 US states, 14,000km road trip from Ontario to Nevada. The Frontier handles mountain passes without even trying.
I drove my 22 Frontier SV 4x4 from Green Bay WI to Las Vegas and back (as well as some side trips and even some off road driving) in September. The truck performed beautifully. It handled the mountains in Colorado with ease and the 80+ mph speed limits in Utah like it was a cruise around town. The ride was smooth and comfortable. With eight to twelve hours a day in the drivers seat I never got uncomfortable or sore.
I had the new Frontier pro4x as a company truck for a few months and I can honestly say it was a great little truck! The ride quality was truly the best I’ve ever experienced in this class of truck. The only down side was the fuel economy. I averaged about 17mpg with a good mix of highway and city driving. Thankfully I was not responsible for fuel costs since it was a company vehicle lol.
@bkmark18 I'm hopping to get A Sv king cab in the near future😊 has balls ! Test drove on but didn't get to pound on it! So I'm planning on asking the rep if we can go the highway to the exit 2miles down the highway to get a real test drive!!!
I had a 2020 Ranger and it was very good. I loved the feel of the drivetrain. I traded it in on a 2022 PRO-4X. The Nissan is more satisfying to drive. The seats are 10 times more comfortable. I get the same mileage. The only real advantage the Ranger has is towing capacity which is 1000 pounds more.
I dont care if a turbo 4 banger ford is faster . I want a truck that is capable offroad and for hauling and lasts 250,000 miles+ . If i wanted to drag race ill drive my vette.
Great video, and good to see Nathan again. Although smaller displacement turbocharged engines are becoming more and more prevalent, I'd choose the Nissan. I like the "simplicity" of a non-turbocharged engine as well as the Frontier's good looks!
That Gen2 TGDI powertrain in Ranger is well proven & immensely powerful. Ppl getting up to 400hp easily & reliability. Have '19 Ranger XLT FX4 that's been impeccable. Just an awesome truck. Truck looks & drives like new after 4yrs /46k mis of hard use. Nissan is def a step up from old one .. & hands dwn way better then Taco. Still though always been a Ford truck guy & new Gen Ranger is a home run.
Nissan. Looks really good but the interior is really small not enough hip room in 160 pounds at a height of 5foot 9 and I don't feel it's wide enough for me cus that stupid center console takes up too much room the old frontier I fit perfectly fine
As a current 2021 Ranger Tremor owner I pretty much called the results including the Ranger loosing the braking test. Most had a soft pedal from the factory allegedly almost all have a little bit of air in the ABS system the online Ranger community says to run the ABS brake bleed process using a scanner without actually bleeding any fluid from the bleeders and it gets rid of the soft pedal feeling. I don’t know if it’ll improve the braking results of this test but it does improve pedal feel
You know what, that makes sense why I wasn't able to brake in time before I was in a car accident with my 2022 ranger. I reacted fast enough, but the brakes were very spongy
I rented both these trucks and a Tacoma for a week each. I put all of them through the same test to see what my next truck was going to be. The Ford was by far faster, the Nissan over all was the better truck. The Tacoma was just a miserable experience. All that being said I decided to keep my 2016 Frontier with 200K+ miles for another year or two.
My 2021 Ranger Sport 4WD (2.3L & AT) feels so much more powerful and is definitely much quicker and nimble than my 2007 Ranger Sport 4WD (4.0L and 5M). I loved my old Ranger, but the new one performs a lot better. I do miss my manual transmission, though.
I knew the ranger would win as far as racing. Driving sports tv did a review on this, one with stock power which in itself is already insane, and the other with and after market tuner kit. I was blown away after the tuner kit! Stopping distance, the frontier use Titian brakes I believe. So yes, in a Mid sized truck the brake would be pretty good at stopping the vehicle.
@@oogleboogle123456789 While their CVTs were definitely the worst, Nissans have all kinds of transmission (and engine, and electrical...) problems with their vehicles that are not related to their CVT...
Yay, Nathan is back on TFLT. 100mi (200 rt) Mpg loop when? Also totally predictable results, but if I had to choose between the Ford and the Nissan I would pick the Nissan
Having driven both, I will always lean toward the forced induction engine. Have a 21 Tremor averaging 23.5 mpg. Love the solid feel and handling of the Ford Ranger.
I have an XLT ranger "FX2" which i love that i still get the neat styled sticker to indicated my truck has the only other option of drive trains. But i live in Orlando and don't really do any off roading, as such i felt it was reasonable
The Frontier probably has stickier tires, with the exception of outliers with bad brakes stopping distance is usually mostly a measure of how grippy the tires are as basically any modern vehicle can deliver enough braking power to lock up the tires and engage the ABS.
Also can’t forget about the suspension and shocks which play an important role in aiding a vehicle to stop if you notice the Ranger nose diving at hard breaking and they do in fact have a softer suspension set up with a lot of body roll
@@billyrowland12 Yup, the Ranger feels very tippy, I've yet to drive the new Frontier, but own a Tacoma, and the Tacoma feels much more stable than the Ranger
i have a 2019 ford ranger. i run mid 13s-low 14s quarter mile drags in it. obviously it’s not stock, but needless to say those 4 bangers are fun trucks to drive. 😂
In the first brake check it's very obvious to see the front of the Nissan drop down from the brakes being pressed long before the ranger front end dropped
But then in the second brake check I was looking closer and while it seems the brakes were pressed about the same time. It looked like the Nissan front end dropped harshly while the Ford seemed to squat all around more. I would be curious to see the control differences between the two when braking under load and braking in adverse conditions.
@@calebbearup4282 I went up to Estes Park CO from Arvada Colorado this last Saturday. There must have been some Nissan event because I saw just about every configuration of Frontier pulling a twin axle trailer with either a black or tan Can Am X3 on the trailer. There had to be at least 15-20 I passed, they were headed south down 119, which would be mostly downhill but in the mountains there, it's up down up down. They seemed to handle the load pretty well.
@@JJsGA Shane was talking about the latest generation Ranger that launched in Australia several months ago. That model is not being released in the US until 2024. The older model was never sold in Australia with the 2.3 Ecoboost. Te only came with turbo Diesel engines. Through the years there were a few different engines, 2.2 and 3.2 and then 2.0 Biturbo.
Im glad Nissan came out w/a new midsized truck. It's worlds better then before. I own a '19 Ranger XLT FX4 that's been impeccable the last 4yrs /48k mis. Def impressed overall w/smooth power/MPGs & ride comfort. I don't baby it & its used like a truck. It gets better mpgs now then when new! Its obvious Ford overbuilt these new Gen Rangers. Gen2 TGDI engines are very understressed. 10R80 tranny from F150 is heavy duty for midsized truck. Dana axles /rear end stock. Tons tech/ off rd goodies. Hard to beat. Would only sell it for a Ranger Tremor.. but can't find one anywhere!

Great seeing Nathan on the videos! I’m sure most would have guessed the Ford would win the drag race. Nissan is a real nice truck. Nathan “hoped you learned something because I didn’t” 😂😂😂
You know... I started with the nissan of the truck I wanted to get.... then i sat on the idea for a year or less... seen the gmc canyon loved it!!! Then seen the chevy trail boss, loved the wide and tall stance... then back to the V6 tried and true nissan. 2024, they will upgrade the engine a little so you will get 385lb torque...so we shall see
ranger raptor coming in 2023 3.0 TT. but that’ll be a 70k+ pricetag for a friggin midsize lol also current ranger w a 5 star tune and downpipe alone were running high 12s! pretty impressive. For someone who dropped 2 grand into my taco to make it run 13s I’m pretty jealous lol
I've seen a couple comments about appreciating the simplicity of an NA engine. I respect that but I'm not sure I agree in this particular comparison. Turbo set ups aren't actually all that complicated and in this particular comparison, factory tuned. In this comparison, the complexity of the turbo is added to an engine that started out much simpler. the 4 cylinder in comparison to a v6 has half as many cylinder heads/gaskets, half as many camshafts. half as many intake gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. two thirds as many pistons, plugs, coils, valves. HOWEVER it actually has one MORE main bearing and a generally stronger crankshaft layout. The intimating looking part as far as maintenance goes is the ductwork for the turbo which is dry and clamped in place generally easy to remove, after which, you are left again with a simple engine.
Someone needs to buy one of these turbo 4 trucks and actually keep it for 20 years and let us know how it does in that period of time....anyone got a blank check, I'll be the Guinea pig on that. A lot of it comes down to maintenance which people tend to skip. My aunt is a service writer at a Ford dealer and says most people are trying to do the 7500-10k oil change intervals on these turbo engines, they don't hold up long when you do that...change the oil around 3-4k and you'll have a very good engine, skip maintenance and you'll pay dearly for it in the short/long term....another thing is to keep the transmission fluid serviced as well, 45-50k fluid/filter change intervals and it'll live a nice long life too, as well as adding an auxiliary transmission cooler. If I recall you can get a 6 foot bed with the Ranger if you get the extended cab, which is all I need. Sadly Chevy dropped the 6 foot bed crew cab option for the 2023 model year, Nissan you can get the 6 foot bed with the extended cab as well...I prefer the longer bed, I guess because my current Ranger has a 7 foot bed....which is extremely handy when hauling sheet goods/building materials. A 6 foot bed wouldn't be too bad, anything shorter and it makes for issues trying to keep things in the bed, stuff just wants to slide or tip out with those shorter beds.
The Nissan is a totally new platform and drivetrain. The Ranger was an older platform that Ford brought from overseas. Not sure if that would make a difference, but I shopped the New Frontier before I got my Maverick, the dealers had $10,000 markups on an already expensive truck, so I left and never considered again. Based on this test, seems to be a solid choice, even if not as fast as the Ranger.
Not true...Nissan has had the 3.8 L and 9 speed transmission in their 2020 Frontiers. Body change in 2022. So the powertrain has been used for 4 years.
Nice video! The Ranger is a true rocket ship at altitude. 16ish 1/4mi is a hot motor run. With a cool down they are cable of mid 15’s at Bandimere with 91and a 5gal splash of e85 (stock tune, K*N drop in filter). I would personally not tune my vehicle, just so I can run less octane if needed/availability. This video does e plain why a new Frontier was toying around with me on broadway for awhile...
I own a 2021 Frontier Pro-4x with the 6 cyl. My wife owns a 2022 Bronco Sport Badlands, with the 4 cyl turbo. The Sport has WAY more pep in every circumstance than the Frontier, and gets better gas mileage. (But I still love my Frontier.)
Cool video. I LOVE my 22 Frontier, it has lots of passing and tow power plus a nice ride and interior. I'm impressed with the Ranger here, but I prefer the sound and feel of a bigger V6. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new Ranger and GM trucks do, Toyota as well whenever that eventually reveals.
well I'd love to see what 2024 has in store for the Ranger, though I'm not a fan of that Twinke shifter 😢 love the Frontiers bad Ass shifter!! I wish some would do a test drive with the auto shiftter in Manuel mode and shop where the RPMS are when in Manuel mode. That would definitely catch some eyes!!
Informative and entertaining video! Always great to see Nathan. I like both trucks. Both are on my short list. I see the many advantages of turbocharging 4 cylinder engines in mid-size trucks, but appreciate the simplicity of 6 cylinders. Ranger styling is fine, but I much prefer the Frontier’s styling both exterior and interior. I would probably lean toward the Frontier; however, it comes down to money. Which truck could I purchase less expensively (assuming comparable trims)? No brand loyalty for me. I want the most capable truck for the money. The “for the money” is a critical variable.
I installed a 9-drive “pedal commander” I got off Amazon for $50!, it made a hell of a difference also removed the turbo lag quiet a bit . I also tow a 30ft travel trailer with my 2019 ranger xlt sport 4x4 now with $40k miles
I've owned both of these trucks, those turbos are helping you in that higher altitude. I'm closer to sea level and I can tell you the race would be different if this one was done at sea level.
I can attest the brakes on the new Frontier are great. When I switch from driving my Gen 2 Work Truck to my Gen 3 daily I damn near put myself thru the windshield with the Gen 3 until I get use to them again.
I found a website that does tire comparisons. They don't go into much detail. They compared the ATM to the AT2. Seems to me they concluded (they never really say -- it's just their test result numbers), that the AT2 is more highway oriented and the ATM is more off-road oriented. In snow (light, medium, heavy), or sand, mud, dirt, the ATM was better. Dry or wet pavement the AT2 did better. This suggests to me the cleats of the tread of the ATM are more aggressive, and they look more "blocky" in the pics they showed. Such cleats tend to give braking performance that is lower than a "street tire" would give. Even if the tires were identical, the Nissan might still have stopped shorter. Ford chose the ATM so they've got to live with the outcome.
Man,, I can’t wait for the new Colorado, Tacoma, and Ranger…I want to see a 4 way duel between those trucks! Being the Nissan is already new it should be good.
@@brad4527 I had a 2007 Nissan Frontier nismo 4x4. It was a good truck…Nissan wouldn’t fix a recall that kinda pissed me off. But over all it was good…the new ones look pretty good. Good luck bud.
It is well known in the Nissan community that the VK56 V8 from the Titan can be swapped into the 2nd Gen Frontier and Xterra with relative ease(as far as motor swaps go). With the Titan apparently on the way out, they really should offer an NA V8 frontier.
@@Steve-yr5vi Except Nissan, Toyota, Dodge, Jeep have all done this before. Not everyone wants a sensitive boosted peanut under their hood with integrated turbos high repair costs.
The Titan being discontinued is a rumor started by auto journalist who speculated on it based on their withdrawing it from the Canadian market, Nissan North America stated they don’t plan on discontinuing the Titan in the US anytime soon
I'll be very curious how the Ford will compare to the new Colorado and Canyon in a drag race. The 4 cylinder in those trucks makes a massive amount more torque than the ecoboost in their higher output versions.
I bought a 2024 frontier SL 4x4. I have owned a 2019 ranger. Had a 2016 Tacoma double cab company truck. Frontier is more comfortable by miles. The Ranger was a decent truck. Absolutely hated driving the Tacoma. No headroom, seating was awkward , slow... This is first nissan I have bought, no regrets.
6:19 you can see the Nissan slam on the brakes almost a car length before the cone, way before the Ranger hit the brakes. Same thing happened second braking testing at 7:25 but wasn't as bad as the first.
When I went for a test-drive in a '22 2wd Frontier, I was really surprised by how the truck seemed - to me - to be kind of slow, or at least like it wasn't really bringing anything special to the plate in terms of engine presence. The 2wd Ranger I drove felt like its engine was smaller for sure and maybe working harder even with the turbo spinning on an brisk freeway merge. The Ranger was markedly taller and "floppier" feeling than the Frontier, but the Frontier's too-long hood - for me - makes it a no-go since I can't see out of it. Now, contrast all this to the 2021 Frontier I drove soon after both these other trucks, and I had excellent visibility, plus the truck, also 2wd, felt subjectively peppier and more eager off the line. It could be because the body of the older Frontiers is smaller or only seems so, but it does objectively not ride as high as either the new Frontier or the Ranger, so that could have something to do with it. I think the solution either way for Nissan is to install the Titan's 5.6 as an optional engine since the Titan is going away after another year or so. What I keep coming back to with trucks in this size category is this: if the fuel economy is still going to be low 20s mpg at best, then why bother switching to small displacement turbo engines? This goes for passenger cars as well.
The real question to me is why does the Pathfinder with its 3.5 V6 and 9speed accelerate to 60 in 6.6 seconds vs the Frontier with its larger 3.8 and 9 speed transmission accelerates to 60 in 7.9. They are both very similar in weight at roughly 4500 lbs.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 I've seen the videos in which the D41 Frontier accelerates to 60 mph in that rough time frame of 7.9 seconds, but, again, the older trucks are either much quicker-feeling or the new trucks are heavier than advertised and thus slower than the old 05-21 models, particularly in 2wd.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 Gearing and programming. The Pathfinder has a quite aggressively tuned gears 1,2 ratios and responds much sharper on kickdown vs the Frontier. Plus I don't think the you can put the Frontier in 'Sports' mode.
Yeah, don't miss the recall campaign that mixes your oil and coolant into butterscotch on that Nissan. I loved my Nissan Frontier VQ40DE but that defect really soured me on buying another Nissan Frontier.
@@robertchapman4488 there’s quite a few articles about how those awards are bogus, people paying other people off. Turbo gas motors NEVER last as long as naturally aspirated engines.
I drive a base model king cab frontier. I beat sad boy tacomas every time, but rangers are always reluctant to race. Big trucks eat my dust every time. 2021 Frontier brakes are so mushy though, I drive in tow mode during traffic for more comfortable slowing.
Reading these comments bother me! PEOPLE!!! Please listen. All of the ecoboost engines are underrated. The 2.3, 2.7, and 3.5 consistently dyno “at the wheel” the published “crank” hp numbers…meaning the engines actually have more than the published number at the crank. All the rangers I have seen dyno’d have 260-270 at the wheels. That’s like 320-330 crank! Couple that with it having more torque and lighter than the frontier and the fact they are at elevation of course it’ll win. At don’t Pay attention to 1/4 Miles times…literally only tells you what car launched the best. PAY CLOSE attention to the trap speed mph…THAT TELLS YOU ABOUT THE CARS POWER…real world.
Wow! The outgoing Ford Ranger is faster than Andres brand new Colorado! And .16 seconds slower than the brand new GMC Canyon. 2.3 Vs 2.7 270hp Vs 310hp 310lb ft Vs 390/430lb ft🤯🤯🤯
This Nissan is much better looking than Ranger. I don’t know why Nissan doesn’t market Titan and Frontier more aggressively; so much sales potential here.
I wouldn’t trade my 2020 Frontier for any of the new 2023 comparable size trucks. I promise you mine will outlast all of them and have less issues. They can take the 4 cylinder turbos and hybrid this and that’s and stick them where the sun doesn’t shine.
I love the tests guys but why don’t you ever use the draggy to perform a brake test? I get the side by side, but you usually do a draggy 0-60 for accuracy sake. Do the same for braking and take out human error
A Ferrari 430 Scuderia stops from 60-0 in 93 feet, so I'm gonna go ahead and say that "83" foot number on the first brake test was from braking way before the stop line, not because that truck outbrakes a Ferrari. Edit: And now watching the second brake test, they're clearly just cheating it by braking too early. I'm sorry, but no, modern trucks do not brake as fast as a Ferrari 430. Also, if you watch the video in slow motion, both trucks on the second test and the Nissan on the first test *clearly* show the nose diving *way* before the cones.
another fun segment guys. the ford was surprising. i really expected to see the nissan win. definitely a big difference between the two. thanks for the comparison.
Andre.."cash back" 😅. I do like that aggressive grill on the frontier. And the Ranger went for the look of the previous frontier generation as the front end slopes down.
We’re on our 4th Ford Ranger. They’ve proven to be very durable pickups. The only one that gave me problems was my 90. It had the 3.0L V6. My current 11 Ranger with the 4.0L V6 has more horsepower, torque and mpg than the 3.0L V6. Our 1st and 2nd had the 2.3L, 4cyl. I sold the 1st one when it hit 350K miles and it was still running strong and burning a quart of oil between oil changes. Our 2nd one had 270K miles and my wife didn’t have it in 4WD and hit a patch of ice and flipped it in a ditch, totaling the truck. My wife had cuts and bruises but was ok. Our 3rd one was the horrible 3.0 V6. At 80K miles it was burning a LOT of oil and had a lot of oil leaks. It’s too bad that my wife didn’t total that one instead. Between 96 and 2019 we needed large 3/4- 1 ton pickups . Our needs changed in 19 and we needed a smaller pickup for work around our property. We were looking for a low mileage Ranger or Tacoma. I came across our current Ranger. The previous owner was 62 years old when he bought it. It was 8 years old when we bought it. The old guy wanted a bigger pickup so he bought a F150. He had put on running boards, skid plates (it had never been off road) and a dashboard cover, custom wheels. At that time KBB said it was worth $22K and we bought it for $18K. I don’t like the Silver exterior paint, so I had it 2 toned in Silver over Red metallic. I didn’t like the gloomy grey and depressing black upholstery so I had it reupholstered in Red with Black trim. I’ve also added a LineX spray in bed liner, adjustable air shocks in the rear, (we haul a Lot of top soil, gravel, bricks and wood). It was getting 19mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph, so I added a K&N cold air intake, Free Flowing exhaust headers, a FlowMaster exhaust. I now consistently get 23mpg. With the new intake and exhaust, I have more hp, torque and mpg. Not only can I get a full yard in the bed, (before I installed the air shocks I could only get a 1/2 a yard). Not only have I doubled what I can haul, but now my Ranger can haul ass. To replace my Ranger with all the modifications , 2 tone paint, custom upholstery, wheels, etc, I’d have to pay over $60K for a new Ranger. The 2.3L 4cyl naturally aspirated engine was bulletproof. If you change the oil regularly, you could easily get 400-500K miles from them. I wanted to find another 2.3L before buying our current 4.0L V6, but we need more hp and torque. Sadly Ford has had problems with the 2.3L turbo engine. I’d love to have a 4dr pickup, but you can’t get a 4dr with a 6’ bed. Our current Ranger is an XLT super cab 4X4. It has every option available in 2011. It’s 12 years old now but has only 35K miles. Our nephew has almost 300K miles on his 2010 Ranger with the 4.0L V6. He told us that if we ever want to sell ours, to give him first dibs. My brother in law has also offered to buy it from us. Last summer I had 2 individuals wanting to buy our Ranger. One offered $28K and the other one offered us $30K. I suppose that our family will fight over it when we’re gone. I change the oil every 4K miles with Kirkland full synthetic motor oil. I also change the front and rear differential, transfer case and a transmission flush every 30K miles. Every 3 years I back flush the radiator and put in new antifreeze. I’ve owned 1 Nissan pickup and had to take it under the Lemon Law. It took Nissan 3 years before they’d buy the truck back. Nissan wanted to give me a new Nissan pickup, but I took the money instead. This was when I bought my 1st Ford Ranger. I’ve owned F150s, F250s, F350s. I’ve had 2 Ram’s 2500 with the Cummins diesel. The engine’s are Awesome, but every 15-20K miles and the transmissions had to be replaced. Never again will I own a Chrysler, Dodge, Ram or Jeep bc they’re now owned by FIAT. Chevrolet has fallen to the Least Reliable vehicle on the roads in North America. Nissan is one of the Worst in reliability according to Consumer Reports.
The acceleration tests surprised me. I figured the immediate punch off the line of a normally aspirated engine would give it the edge. Interesting that the heavier Frontier has much better braking.
While the naturally aspirated engine has a much more linear powerband, it does not produce near as much power down low as the turbocharged 4 cylinder. Obviously, there is a little lag in the turbo, but modern turbos spool up very quickly. Ford's 4 cylinder produces much more torque at say 1500 rpm than the V6 Nissan is using. The braking is interesting. Must be the tire difference although I suspect the tires aren't the only thing contributing to that much difference.
@@prestondeters5093 Ecoboost engines will not last I've known a lot of guys who owns Raptors, F-150's that are Ecoboost V6 most of them haven't reached 80,000k miles YET and their trucks are seeing a lot of troubles especially in the engines and transmissions. For Long Term Reliability I'd rather pick The Frontier or The Toyota Tacoma eitherway
I’ve looked at and driven all of them. I’m not brand loyal, I look at value. Dollar for dollar the Nissan is by far the best value for money. Everyone talking about $50k trucks compared to my 24 Frontier 4x4 crew cab I paid $32k OTD for. Look at the frame, engine reliability, tow rating….I could go on. We all choose vehicles for different reasons, I go for value and reliability, no mid size truck can touch the Nissan for value.
Not the first to bring up the Chevy 6.2 either. And won't be the first to be disappointed. LOL Especially with altitude and low RPM torque for towing, the Ford EB still out performs the big 6.2
Just think in about 20 years that Nissan will be still chugging along and the turbo on the Ford will be probably at its end, but alas you sell your truck on Carschmingo and probably get at least 2 or 3 bucks because the engine is worn out by the turbo!! That God I can Fast Forward through the Sponsors Horse Dung let me sell your vehicle for you. Really!!! Great Videos Thank You 🙏
2 things people in the comments might be missing. 1. they are quite a bit above sea level (forget the exact amount) this hurts horsepower and hurts it significantly more on naturally aspirated engines. 2. peak numbers on paper don't tell the whole story. unless using a CVT that keeps the engine at peak horsepower the entire time, its more useful to look at the actual power curve and if the transmission has enough closely spaced gears to keep it in the meat of the curve.
can we just say looks wise, the frontier takes the cake. i would’ve thought that ford would make their 23 model look just as good as the frontier but nope
I'm not really agreeing on the more updated frontier interior, it looks more like a 2010 frontier interior to me. It's just human nature to know in the back of your mind that it is a newer truck so you think that it is. And the fact that the Rangers only couple of months out from a refresh.

@@haroldbeauchamp3770 from Motor Trend, which I believe tests at near sea level. "The Frontier's heft taxed its 310-hp, 281-lb-ft 3.8-liter V-6, with the 2.5-ton Frontier taking 7.9 seconds to haul itself to 60 mph. To put that in perspective, the V-6-powered Colorado Z71 made it to 60 in a much brisker 6.4 seconds, while our quickest Ranger 4x4, with its 310-lb-ft turbocharged four-cylinder, did it in 6.7. Even our most recent Toyota Tacoma 4x4, the Frontier's archrival and a truck saddled with its own outdated V-6-one smaller and less powerful than the Frontier's-beat the Nissan to 60 by 0.2 second."
@@ALMX5DP thank you for researching this for me. I’m admittedly a Toyota fanboy, but I surprised to see the Tacoma actually is slightly quicker. I suspect the Nissan would have a similar driving experience.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 yeah the Tacoma 3.5 isnt well regarded, but also gear ratio or transmission ratios could play a role in how the 0-60 appears. Tacoma may not need an extra shift before hitting that figure, while the 9 speed Frontier may need to shift to third which could affect it a little.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770acoma just needs a tune. tuning alone on midgrade pump gas shaved a whole second off the quarter mile. I’ve street raced 2 Chevys. One with a 5.7 V8 and the other with a 5.3 V8.

I bought a Pro-4X over the competitors for these reasons: long-term reliability of no turbo, best ride quality of the group, great tech, most room for a taller guy like myself, and just as capable as a TRD Pro.
I get the same mileage. The only real advantage the Ranger has is towing capacity which is 1000 pounds more.
Then you have to worry about that turbo crapping out because they put too much power through that little engine.
The only advantage?? What about the Ranger having WAY more power!

I went from a Tacoma to the 22 frontier and don't regret it
As a current 2021 Ranger Tremor owner I pretty much called the results including the Ranger loosing the braking test.

@@hawkermustang that’s a 4 cylinder right?

But it's a Nissan, so the transmission failing pretty early is pretty much guaranteed, lol. (Yes, I'm exaggerating...)

I've owned both of these trucks, those turbos are helping you in that higher altitude. I'm closer to sea level and I can tell you the race would be different if this one was done at sea level.
I've owned 3 Nissan vehicles so far in my life and they all have had phenomenal braking systems

Reported. No one is falling for this BS.
I wish you guys did more videos on ths new nissan frontier. Honestly it's an underrated truck.
I had a 2020 ranger and it was very quick but i hated the braking on it but i would rather stop quicker than accelerate quicker..
Some quality brake pads makes a huge difference
But the thing is the naturally-aspirated V6 will last longer than the turbocharged
ALWAYS.
Not Nissans. They went with a pure direct injection engine which means in 60k miles it will be clogged with carbon.
Let's be honest, Modern Nissan trucks and reliability/longevity don't belong in the same sentence. Lol
@@RammSnipe Nissan cars, yes. Their trucks are pretty solid.
Yeah, don't miss the recall campaign that mixes your oil and coolant into butterscotch on that Nissan.
I loved my Nissan Frontier VQ40DE but that defect really soured me on buying another Nissan Frontier.
And now only the Frontier and Gladiator are the only non turbo mid size pickups left. What a time to be alive.
My 2020 Ranger also has loud ABS. Love how fast it is.
Long Term Reliability goes to the v6 over the turbo 4. Nobody cares about straight line speed in a midsize pickup.
Too soon to know that.
EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES!
Ranger was rated number one in reliability by consumer so that is pretty funny what you just said
Not necessarily. There are a lot of turbo engines out there with crazy high mileage on them.
I really dig all these midsize. I just got a 22 canyon last month and it’s sweet
It was good to see Nathan in a TFLT video!
Those turbos give them better acceleration and it gets to max power faster
Andre.."cash back" 😅. I do like that aggressive grill on the frontier. And the Ranger went for the look of the previous frontier generation as the front end slopes down.
Brakes on the ford might be a little bit more used and maybe not even stock, does tfl know?
That’s what I was thinking also
We’re on our 4th Ford Ranger.
Nissan trucks are one of the most reliable and proven trucks. 🤦
I love my 2021 Ranger XL Stx.... Couldnt be more happier
Andre’s joke about the ATM had me dying lol.
I didn't buy my Frontier to race other midsize trucks. I bought it to ride outback mountain trails and camp in the middle of nowhere.
TfL needs to do a braking test on all there videos, not many people do them anymore 👍🏻
Yeah, braking is a lot more important than a drag race, and how fast you can get to 60mph pulling a trailer...who cares if you can't safely stop.
I liked to seeing Nathan on these videos and his humor.
@@prestondeters5093 It's the brakes themselves, the Frontier has more powerful brakes.
Nope! Nathan just doesn't know how to drive. But really the Frontier could smoke the new Ranger with turbo. Tire slipping is an old excuse to me.
@@craftsmantrucker6867 that’s a steaming load of bull💩
I’ve looked at and driven all of them. I’m not brand loyal, I look at value. Dollar for dollar the Nissan is by far the best value for money. Everyone talking about $50k trucks compared to my 24 Frontier 4x4 crew cab I paid $32k OTD for.
Look at the frame, engine reliability, tow rating….I could go on.
We all choose vehicles for different reasons, I go for value and reliability, no mid size truck can touch the Nissan for value.
Huge fan of Ford but that new Nissan Frontier looks so good!
Nice, I'd love to see the Ram hemi vs the 3.5 EB Ford vs the Chevy 6.2 tested in the full quarter and roll.
Look back at their videos.. they have done this race. Ford Eco walks all of them.
You must be new to this channel. 😁
Not the first to bring up the Chevy 6.2 either. And won't be the first to be disappointed. LOL Especially with altitude and low RPM torque for towing, the Ford EB still out performs the big 6.2
@@PsalmFourteenOne
I didn’t see a quarter mile race, only 0-60
@@Xavier1320
I only seen 0-60
I knew the Ranger would win for the speed/take off as I own one!
Really!!! Great Videos Thank You 🙏
I need to see a drag race video from a Ford Ranger 2020 Versus a GMC Canyon 2020
I have the Ranger but love the new Nissan
can we just say looks wise, the frontier takes the cake. i would’ve thought that ford would make their 23 model look just as good as the frontier but nope
Possible to do this vsame video with Ranger and AWD Maverick?
And the non turbo truck will run well for twice the millage. If you want to go fast get a sports car!
Exactly. I could care less if a truck is 1 second faster on a 1/4 mile. I want it to be capable offroad and go 250,000+ miles/20 years
“Couldn’t” care less. Get it right.
Nathan definitely has the best personality and wit
I'm not really agreeing on the more updated frontier interior, it looks more like a 2010 frontier interior to me. It's just human nature to know in the back of your mind that it is a newer truck so you think that it is. And the fact that the Rangers only couple of months out from a refresh.
Almost like the drag races as much as the Ike gauntlet. Thanks guys
Kinda want one of those Frontiers for camping, service road/hiking access...
that's mean throwing "& the next dodge dakota will have" lmao, but seriously dodge/ram, whoever just bring us back our dodge dakota already & since it wasn't done in time for us to get a hellcat version of it u guys better give not only a R/T version & since twin turbos seem to be to be part of todays engine choices i vote for an SRT Dakota option i currently have a 94 slt extended cab 5.2 and an 02 R/T 5.9 and I want a SRT twin turbo'd crew cab round 550-600hp with atleast 650+ ftlbs of torque.. enough talk just build da dam thing already
I really appreciate you guys doing all the truck races and such. They’re very entertaining. Although, it’s always disappointing for me as a fan or normal aspiration engines since you guys are at altitude. It is what it is though. Still enjoy the videos.
Yeah I can’t help but wonder the outcome of these tests were performed at a coastal city at sea level.
I have a Tundra and was given a Tacoma loaner when my Tundra was in the body shop. The 3.5 engine is a huge disappointment compared to the 4.0 in the previous generations.
The factory tuning is very dialed back for reliability and fuel efficiency and the trans tune and ratios do not help. idk why they couldn’t have used the camry tune. it achieves same mpg and has 30 more hp. i have an 18 sport dual cab w the auto. Full bolt ons (intake, pre cat deletes, tundra throttle body w plenum spacer) tuned on E85 runs mid 13s. Cost me roughly 2 grand after all said and done. granted that’s way more than most peeps will do but it’s fun and still reliable as heck especially in a midsize. Plus you should see the look on guys faces when you pull away in a turd gen taco. Especially tundra drivers.
