I bought an original 1986.5 Hardbody 4x4, manual transmission, loaded and brand new that first model year back in 1986 for $18,000. 140-hp V6. It was a fantastic truck. Now for my sixty-fifth birthday I treated myself to a low mileage Nissan certified pre-owned 2022 4x4 Frontier. I absolutely love it, and all the new features and improvements, and that 310 HP isn't so bad either.
I like my 2022. I've had a couple issues that I've had to sort out for myself and my local service department didn't seem to be very interested in hearing about it. Other than that, it's been a great truck.
@@diulaylomochohai the biggest thing was warped brake rotors and a caliper hanging up by 6000 miles. The truck started pulling to one side and the rotors started pulsating. They didn't seem to take my concerns about it seriously, said that they would order rotors for it and call me back but wouldn't listen that I felt like a caliper was hanging up intermittently. They never did call me back but I didn't trust them to take care of the problem correctly anyways so I went ahead and put extreme duty rotors and pads on it myself and inspected and serviced the calipers, that way I knew it was done right. They had already botched one of my "free oil changes" by leaving oil all over the bottom of it and by the time i got it home, i could smell oil burning off of the exhaust. If I've got to crawl under it, clean it off and remove the inspection cover and make sure that the oil filter is tight and not leaking, what do I really need them for to begin with?
@864overlanding I’ve had my 22 frontier sv since November 3, 2021 and have just hit 41,600 and have had zero problems with the truck. Hoping to put some upgrades on it later this year.
Have had mine for 10 months. So far I really like it. Have had 9 4x4 trucks from small to mid to full size. It is my favorite truck. Great video - thanks!
I love my 23 pro4x. I have had mine for exactly 1 year now. It's the first new vehicle I have ever bought, most I have ever spent as well. I still feel like it is the best value for how it is equipped and you don't have to pay the Taco tax. I love it on trail but its still easy enough to drive in town. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure!
@@bcw686 well, I know for a fact that a lot of the previous generation frontiers and Xterras are still running around with two or 300,000 miles. I personally have a 2008 frontier in my driveway with 218,000 miles that while needing some stuff, maintenance wise still runs like a champ engine and transmission wise. My Xterra had 150,000 miles and ran like brand new when I traded it for my frontier. Historically people would argue that the Tacomas are slightly more reliable but my question is, is it worth the significant markup to get something that’s just slightly more reliable than a frontier? I don’t think so, personally. Especially when buying used.
I drove a SV 1st, it bounced everywhere and thought my wife will never ride in this! Great! But I opted for the pro4x so I could live in happy blissful marriage.
Im a Toyota fan...but really a 4Runner fan boy and just bought a new '23 last year. Im not at all thrilled with turbo charged 4's in the Tacoma, Colorado and the future 4Runner. More complexity, more problems, more cost. The Frontier is an awesome truck and the discounts on them now are incredible....its not difficult to find a 16% discount currently. Retaining the proven V6 is a deciding factor over the competition for sure. Your insight is valuable and thank you for sharing!
Many folk complaining about this great truck belong to two categories; haters and operatives for other manufacturers. This truck has the only available non-turbo, six cylinder engine among all other truck manufacturers. THAT'S why I'm buying one. That and the features and available options that will keep you well under 50k.
I noticed the same transmission issues. My Frontier was on the recall list for the parking claw and a transmission software update. Once I got those two things done, it shifts smooth as butter.
I bought a new 2022 SV 4x4 fully loaded and love it. Had a few issues, but, what first year model of any vehicle doesn't have some issues. Thankfully, the dealership I purchased it from has a fantastic service department and corrected everything promptly. I'm so relieved you didn't complin about hoe "HARD" the steering is. I'll be 64 in three weeks and took my drivers test in 1976 in a truck with three on the tree, manual brakes and manual steering, now that was hard steering. Too many people have become spoiled with the electronic steering. I prefer power steering over electronic steering as I feel power steering gives me more awareness of the terrain.
Thanks for sharing all of your real time experiences and information about this truck. I am in the market for a new mid-size pickup and I was zeroing in on this sort of detailed information that you have provided. It's the best perspective to acquire to help make a decision I think.
Just got my 2024 Pro4X in Baja Storm a few weeks ago. Internal storage is less when compared to my former Jeep JL but did my due diligence and firmly believe I bought THE right truck. Love it so far
Congrats! I think the truck should last you for a long time if you plan to keep it until it falls apart. Jeeps are super capable, but I've got a few friends with them and they seem to result in expensive problems more frequently so there are pros and cons to both.
Love my red Pro-4x. No transmission issues, but only 1000 miles. Sold my 2015 Jeep JKU Rubicon. I love the comfort and technology. Installed a Yakima Overhead rack on it so I can adjust the rails up and down for my kayak. No complaints on any of the newer tech. Getting used to the engine-off feature when at traffic lights. Average 23.2 mpg (30% highway, 70% city). I got this truck for $2600 below MSRP. No extras. Paid cash. I am really looking forward to a road trip in January-February.
I have a '23 also and it does NOT have that dreaded, God awful start/stop "feature" My Gladiator had it and it was nothing but problems, so I got rid of it. I bought this truck because it looked good, also had a V6 and none of that EPA crap.
Yep, agree. I have a buddy with a Gladiator that's gone to the dealer twice for start/stop battery related issues in under 40K miles. I have just gotten into the habit of hitting the button every time I get in, :(. @@williamphelan8779
Nice! They last quite a while so you're probably still good for a while. That gives you more time to let any issues with the new trucks make themselves known and then you can get a lightly used one too, so that's all good.
Just bought a Pro-4X over the Taco. Removed mud flaps. Looks way better. Also removed the steps from the side bars. They actually got in the way when getting into or out of the truck. Bought front seat spacers (to make the seats higher).
I have loved how the Tacoma's looked for a long time, but looking at used Tacomas that are 2020 or newer and still cost as much as a new Frontier, I had to go Frontier (plus I've had like 12 Nissans that were flawless and one Lexus that was a nightmare, so there's that).
I have the same model as you and love it. Every other truck on the road is a Tacoma so I love not being part of the Taco crowd. Haven't had it off road yet but looking forward to it and can't wait. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them
Same here. That's why I just don't buy anything that is more than $10k to $13k. My last purchase was a 2010 Nissan Versa 1.8 hatchback with 151k miles for $4700 cash. I also have a 2015 Lexus GS 350 with 190k. That one was $13k. I have a 2003 chevy trailblazer with 200k miles. I paid $10k for that one and I still have it. So I bought like 3 good used vehicles for less than $30k. I have zero car payments. And it's insanely expensive to insure a newer vehicle. No thanks.
I love my ‘23 P4X! Had her since November 2022. It does great off-road (beach, trails, snow covered beach, etc), very comfortable highway cruiser (she’s doing her second Key West trip soon), and pretty good on gas too. It has all the features I want at the right price, comparatively speaking. One feature it’s missing is lane keep assist/lane centering…I know that’s due to its hydraulic steering. The cruise control issue is not a big deal for me. I chose her for a few reasons…1) best looking midsize truck. 2) relative mechanical simplicity, no turbos etc. 3) it has the features comfort I was looking for.
I just traded my 19' f150 2wd powerstroke in on a new 24' nissan frontier pro 4x. I miss the the room I had in the f150, as it turns out I miss the towing ability too. I knew I'd l miss these things. I have a one man lawn mowing hustle, 6x10 utility trailer, 2' sides and drop down gate, with zero turn, push mower, weed eater and blower. I will say I drive the truck more for other reasons than the little bit I use it for the mowing hustle. This is the truck I'll retire with. I've owned lots of trucks big and small. Years ago I owned a 92' chevy S-10 Tahoe 4.3 V6. All I can say is WOW! Manufacturers have come a long way with power! This engine, transmission, styling, tech and comfort are spot on! I do not like the nanny's. I suppose it's nice to be able to push a button and disable some of them. It drove me nuts the first time i hooked up my trailer and tried backing up...frontier slammed on the brakes and stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought that I had it figured out by disabling emergency braking in vehicle settings but then sadly mistaken by default it came back on when i shut vehicle off and turned it back on. Only thing so far that has me a little frustrated is a noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when I take off from a stop sometimes. Sounds like something is loose, or squeaky. I'll be getting under the truck to inspect once weather is better.
Glad you’re enjoying it and that is a big change. Nissan really did a great job with the new truck versus the older ones I really like how it’s still retains a lot of the same engine and transmission and underlying components for reliability, while upping the technology and luxury side of the truck.
Hey Trail Buzzard, did you ever find the cause of the loose, squeaky noise from the rear of your truck? I have a '23 Pro 4X with the EXACT same sound and it's driving me batty. I would love to know what the cause was in your truck so I can see if it's causing the same noise in my truck. Thanks in advance!
Thanks bro. I really appreciate your videos and will watch your other ones. I have a turbo hatchback and have wanted a truck for a few years. I love the ranger but do not want a turbo. My wife also owns a Pilot and I love it. I only regret not getting AWD. I have narrowed my picks to either a Frontier or Honda Ridge Line. Either way I’ll be fine. I love that the Ridge line has a higher back seat with vents other mid size trucks do not have this for some reason. I am fine with both trucks ability to tow. I can’t decide. Our Pilot had the old 6spd automatic so I am sure this new Ridge Lines 9spd will feel significantly better. Not have great power and event mpgs if you drive efficiently.
Yeah, the new Pilots (and I'm sure Ridgelines) are pretty sweet. We rented one from Turo on a vacation earlier this year and the trans was great. I think either truck would be great, but the Frontier would edge out the Ridgeline in offroad capability, but if you're not going rock crawling, you'd probably get better gas mileage and a little more utility out of the Ridgeline.
I have a '23 Pro 4X with the wonky transmission, gear hunting issues. 3,500 miles, original owner. I'm noticing the rougher shifting at lower speeds in city driving, stop and go traffic. On the highway at 50 mph and up, no issues. The rougher shifting/gear hunting seems to always occur at low speeds in the lower gears. Do any of you have this issue? Will this problem be remedied by this same update? If so, how do I know if mine needs the update? What is the recall/bulletin number? I bought mine in 9/2023. I appreciate any help with this.....I love the truck otherwise. Thanks!
@@joemarchand8313 I'm guessing/hoping that that is a software issue that will be remedied by the flash? I don't really have that. I have noticed a time or two when I'm at low speeds that it will sometimes short shift or downshift a little wonky, but nothing worrisome. Hopefully the flash resolves it for you!
I had Nissan frontier's since 2010 and the new style is awesome. Love the styling and handling. Only thing that goes off in the winter is the backup brakes
I'm also experiencing that same weird transmission issue where it's hunting for gears, mainly around 1st-2nd when in stop and go traffic. I've got about 3,500mi on my P4X, hoping it irons itself out after it "learns" how I drive, though I fear that time has already passed. They say the first 1,200-1,500mi is the learning period. Otherwise, totally love my truck!
It did take a bit for mine to smooth out. I had 2500 miles on mine by July of this year and then I drove it all the way from Indiana to Wyoming and spent 2 weeks offroading it and sleeping in my roof top tent. The truck did great and I probably put 5,000 miles on it in about 2 weeks and it definitely "learned" a lot I think from all that driving and has smoothed out quite a bit.
@@AllThingsOverlanding We got a decent deal knowing the current industry rates. 4.0% ...... got the 4x2, though (it's my wife daily). So far, she loves it!
I thought the cost cutting measures in the 24 frontier pro 4x was a little weird, receiver hitch or harness for it, mine didn’t come with blind spot or heated mirrors, and the VCCS system that will cause headlight led flicker of the battery isn’t charged, and the weird door lock issues like the driver hanging up in like half lock position
Looking at the same truck just a 2024. I have been in Tacoma's since 2009. I have no idea what Toyota is doing right now as far as pricing goes. Completely off the charts. Thanks for the review. Very informative.
No problem! And agree. I still love Toyota stuff and think it's great quality, but I've always had really good luck with my Nissans for a fraction of the price. Good luck with whatever you end up with!
I love my 23 PRO4X luxury. I have about 8000 miles on mine and you hit the nail on the head, when I first got it it was shifting weird but that all smoothed out. I was told by the dealer the tranny needs to learn the driver. Here in Canada if you want the Fender, leather and the sunroof on the PRO4X, you have to go luxury. They all come as a package, I’m surprised it’s not like that in the US as the truck is built in Tennessee. The Pro4X luxury or not only comes in the 5 foot bed if you want the 6 foot you have to go to the SV. The SV no Bilstien a lower ground clearance, no skids, no locking diff, no fender/sub.
We don't all need the pro4x package though, the SV is a good option for the ones who want to tow or haul and do light off road FSR's. I just bought a 2024 SV 4x4 and even that was listed at 47k CAD the pro4x around here is 58K CAD.
Love my 23' pro 4x. I got the more base pro 4x, although it does have the 9" screen and a tow package. I think MSRP was $43k. I got the truck for $40k otd, with $2k trade. Not to shabby. Added a lift and few other things. It's been great so far, and prob the best value in trucks available.
Good deal! If my timing had been better, I probably could have gotten a better deal. Kind of mad that I had to buy it when I did because they were still hard to find and selling for MSRP or really close basically.
It kind of depends on what you want. I've seen a lot of trucks with the 6" lift which seems like a lot on these trucks (could cause driveline problems and other issues). There's also a lot more cutting to do to run 35's on the 6" lift which kind of seems to be the point of the larger lift. I personally have a 2nd gen Frontier with a Titan swap, 4" lift and 35" tires so when I bought this truck, I wanted to keep it a bit more mild so I didn't have to chop up the truck or do extensive mods. Reliability and simplicity were my goals so I went with the smaller lift and 33's. Again, just depends on your goals!
got mine in July, still loving it, it does have a wide turning radius and my transmission is still a bit searchy and on occasion downshifts while going downhill kinda like your roundabout experience, previous ride was also a 05 Xterra that i got 315k miles out of, she thrived on neglect and abuse but it certainly could turn on a dime compared to my new Frontier 😜
Wow, congrats! That's awesome, but I'm anticipating 120-150K with minimal maintenance based on all the Nissan trucks I've owned. They're underrated constantly. Enjoy yours!
@@scottvickery2057 no Sir. Keeping up with the regular PM at 6k oil changes. My only gripe about this truck is the windshield. I’m on my 4th now. It doesn’t take much and it’ll crack.
i have a 23 best upgrade i did on it was unplug all the reverse sensors now it doesn't slam on the brakes randomly other than that i added a winch to the front and immediatley upgraded to 20k lumen leds in the headlights it gets 18 to 26 mpgs so not bad 4x4 king cab
@@AllThingsOverlanding big applause to the power plant tho they did really well with that. the interior for me is extremely comfy and part of what won me over way way way comfier than toyota and 15k less out the door for me anyways i hear people are getting screaming good deals on 2023's now
@@AllThingsOverlanding did you notice that the cab is a little short in height? I'm not tall i'm 5'7 and i have to duck a little to climb in or out of the truck without knocking my head on the headliner
@@chazflix maybe I’m just used to it but I haven’t noticed that. I’m about 6‘2“ and my truck does have a slight lift so I actually just step up into it a little bit.
@@AllThingsOverlanding just curious what lift did you go with I been looking at rough country but idk about their 3 inch lift level kit been kicking around the 6 inch kit your mileage change that much I'm not trying to get bigger tires just more so I don't knock my head
I personally do prefer the cloth seats over the leather seats for a few reasons. To get the leather, you have to opt for the (I think it's called) comfort package which is about $2750 and includes sunroof and some other options (been a year since I bought the truck so I may be off on that, but that's what I remember). To me, it wasn't worth that additional cost for those things. Also, I've seen some evidence that the leather seats (most of which are actually vinyl) are showing wear way worse than the cloth seats. Then lastly, since you can get heated cloth seats, that was the primary thing I wanted, living in the midwest. Hope that helps!
i was told it doesn't have telescope steering wheels. im 6.2. is this comfy for tall druver without telescope? im looking mid size especially frontier. only one concern is what i said.. opinion please?
That’s correct, no telescoping but the driving position is really good and the seat has a bunch of adjustability. I’m also 6’2” and I’ve been super comfy in the truck, even driving from IN to WY and off-roading for two weeks and then driving back. Hope that helps!
Currently have a ‘05 frontier inherited from my dad, which I intend to hold on to for sentimental reasons. But you sir are convincing me to let go of my ‘03 Sentra and get the new frontier 😅😆.
Great overview ! looking to possibly get a new Pro4x - you mentioned about previous truck/bed rack compatibility - do you by chance know, or have any experience with the Thule Xporter Pro rack compatibility on the Frontier? Thule website is inconclusive - the only thing I can find is something about the rail/tiedown system needing to be removed. Thanks again !
Thanks! Unfortunately, I don’t really have any experience with that. You might try giving them a shout and see if you can verify? Or I wonder if there are dedicated third GEN frontier groups out there where people have verified that it works. I know that I literally installed a second GEN, xtrusion Overland bed rack on my third GEN with all stock hardware and had no problems.
Evaluation midsized trucks right now. This video was really important helping with the four trucks I'm considering. I just sold my 2016 Titan XD diesel. It towed like a dream, however the gov. mandated additions killed its reliability. Still think highly of Nissan as a brand. Again, thank you.
I have the 2022 SV 4x4, just hit 31k, went from Northern Virginia to Chicago and back and was a comfortable ride the entire time. I love it, like look at it and smile sort of love. I do have dreams of overlanding on the weekends while being my daily driver on the weekdays. The only gripe I have is I take my time getting out + being a larger person (are we allowed to say what we are lol?) and end up 'sitting' on the seat controls so I end up having the seat go flat, and other "me" issues (being a larger person + CCW setup = a bit harder trying to get to seatbelt/scuffs, etc). The truck itself is good and I appreciate the heavy steering. It just feels right y'know? Sorry for many edits, I press save and remember something else lol.
Nice truck choice! Totally get your concerns with the seat and have heard that from other folks too. I have seen somebody that 3D printed a smaller, more angled power seat control that they said helps keep it from getting pushed when getting out so maybe something like that would help? And agreed on the steering. I was kind of caught off guard when I started to see a bunch of people complaining about it, :D.
@@AllThingsOverlanding I'll have to look into those power seat controls. I do want to say that the Pro4X was very enticing when I was looking at the purchase but decided against it mostly because I personally felt it was too much truck lol. SV trim was still good enough to go through some forestry roads and up a steep hill thats practically exposed rock.
The 9 speed transmission is a Mercedes design licensed out to jayto so it doesn't have any of the same problems as older jaytco transmissions as most of them are cvt transmissions which tend to fail early in the vehicles life from all manufacturers
Short answer is it's the RC Killa lift with adjustable camber bolts from All Dogs Offroad. Long answer, here's a full walk around video I made that shows you the bulk of the mods to date (as of a few months ago-new stuff coming!): ua-cam.com/video/q3ZAZT7_22w/v-deo.html
I have a 2008 Toyota FJ that I'm about to trade for the 2024 Frontier. My FJ has been the best truck I've ever had. It's got over 200k on it and it's time. I wanted a TRD Tacoma but those things are through the roof as far as pricing. But I've done a ton of research on the truck and for the price, this seems to be the one.😉👍🏼
Nice! I ran through that same math and, despite being a Nissan guy (I also like Toyotas) it just seemed like a no brainer to me to get the Frontier over the Tacoma for the price. I think you'll like it!
Thank you for all your informative videos. Just a question I had a 2023 PRO 4X I'm experiencing something is hitting at the back of my truck it's like someone hit you at the rear end especially when going to a stop and sometimes when you hit the gas pedal too. Had you also experience it to your truck? I just had my truck for over 3 months now and put in 7,100 kms. It happens to me lets say for a month maybe 10 times and other days it will be gone
Huh, like transmission delay? Maybe in the last 11K miles I've noticed it a few times, but just assumed it was the trans being a little slow to react when I would roll up to a roundabout and was slowing down but then suddenly floored. I definitely haven't noticed anything concerning or anything. Maybe that's not what you're experiencing though?
Help wanted* I’m torn between three trucks 2023 Toyota trd off road 32k miles for 37k 2024 nissan frontier pro 4 x brand new for 39k 2017 ford raptor 100k miles (cam phasers replaced) for 37k Can’t make my mind up
Thanks and congrats on yours! I'm also starting to think about bumpers for sure. I did build my own simple drawer system that's been working great, but there are some options (from molle panels for the sides of the bed to a Decked system or similar) for sure.
I have heard a few folks say things, but here's the thing. In large groups, the loudest voices are going to be the small minority that have had issues. I've had about 12 or 13 Nissans at this point in my life and they've all been great. I've got an 08 Frontier with 218K miles in my driveway and the original transmission is still going strong in that. Nissan also has a 5 year 60K mile powertrain warranty, so if something happens, it should happen in that time period, so I feel fine about it. I've got 15,500 on mine now and just got back from a 1500 mile trip to MO and back and it still drives like new. I figure worst case you can always lease it or buy it and then trade it as that warranty gets close if you would have problems, but I personally am not worried about it. It's always a risk though, so totally understand the hesitation.
one other point i would like to make like you said about half way though. the second gen part will work on these. so thinking future when parts become scares, or god forbid they ban auto parts stores. You can get parts for the motor at the wrecking yard, aftermarket, There is already really good support community that is Nissan specific that build parts specific for these trucks. like All dogs,Cbi and others. Just one thing to think of when buying any car/truck these days. Also the frontier is 1 of 2 trucks this size that is still available with a v6. oh one last thing modding on these are super easy most things are bolt on suspension, motor swaps, bed attachments. any ways Cheers thanks for the vod!
I've got the All Dogs Offroad RC Killa lift on my truck and I switched from the stock tires to Kenda Klever RT's (Hybrid AT/MT tire) in 285/70R17. If it helps, I did a "walkaround" type video with the majority of the mods on it. I've made some changes since this video but it covers the lift and tires. ua-cam.com/video/q3ZAZT7_22w/v-deo.html
I put a screen cover on it the day I brought it home and I've got no scratches or issues. No issues at all with it so far. Have about 23K miles on the truck now.
@@AllThingsOverlanding I had a 2009 Maxima and it had no scratches or burn-in over 11years. This one has scratches in just 7000miles. “0” off roading yet, just regular driving. I put a cover on my 24 Passport immediately. Thanks.
@@longballist that sucks. I think I’ve heard that from other people with their screens. If I remember right a year and a half ago I was already starting to hear concerns about that which is why I just bought the screen cover right away and put it on. I think that’s just a thing now with these new vehicles and these touchscreens unfortunately. But maybe it’s worse on these for some reason?
Do you have tow mode ? The trany really responds well to it. I have 750 miles on my 24. I love this truck , and it's nice having purchased new isn't it. I agree with everything you said about these trucks. It's also my most expensive vehicle that I ever bought. Let's hope there are no transmission issues in the future. Could turn tighter but that ok. I highly recommend the pro4x 👍.
Ugggghh soooo tempted to buy a 2023 pro 4x with 56k miles on it... ive been watching alot of your videos. Praying for some direction in a big purchase like this
I love my '23 P4X. Only complaint is I wish Nissan would do a telescoping steering column. It tilts (which is good) and I'm comfortable in it but I think a telescoping steering would be more comfortable for more people. Nissan is like that. My 2018 370Z didn't have this feature either. As far as the steering, I love the heavier feel of their hydraulic system. It inspires confidence in most driving situations and I have no problem whipping it into tight spots.
a few things on interior and exterior i would add at least on the pro 4x i bet is on the base model as well. when you key less remote start when the truck is warming up it has both inside door defrost but also has defrost on the door handles so if for some reason you had ice on the door handle it would melt it. I found that to be amazing in Oklahoma. I have had mine since feb of 23 very close to your model. my frustrations not hates, I dont understand for being a pro4x why i had to upgrade the center mirror to get a garage door opener, I dont understand for being a pro4 x why i had to pay to upgrade a locking rear tail gate..
I didn't know about the door defrost, that's cool. I had the same thoughts on no homelink garage controls on the mirror. My Pro4X came with the locking tailgate, but maybe it was part of one of the packages I got...
Came across your video looking at reviews for the Frontier. I think it's what I'm going to go with in the near future. I currently have a 2010 Ram that doesn't really meet my needs anymore. I've narrowed it down to the Frontier or Ford Maverick, as I'm not impressed with the Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado, and Toyotas in general due to their dealerships. I think an SV Frontier would be great because it's smaller but not compact like the Maverick, and I could still tow some things if I wanted to. I wish the MPGs were a little higher but it's a pickup at the end of the day. This was a very helpful review!
I was a Dodge guy fro a while but had some transmission issues with my Dakota so I swapped to a Nissan and then I've had probably 15 of them in the last 20 years and they've been great.
Thanks for a great video, I am subscriber to your channel. I am looking at purchasing a 2024 Frontier. Pro4X I have a question about the "P"sonar button on the dash. You mentioned in your video that if your tail gate is down, it will beep at you when you're backing up and apply your breaks. You mentioned that you can disable the breaks if you push the "P" button. My Ford F150 drives me nuts when backing up my boat with my tailgate down. My truck does not apply the breaks, but beeps at me very loudly. I can't disable the beeping, especially if someone is trying to talk to me from the outside. So does that "P" button on your dash also disable the beeper?
Good update, currently in an 05 Titan, owned since new, not a single problem but I’m thinking of going to a new Frontier. I’m originally from Indiana, in California now but looking to move back. Have you been to Attica? If so how did you like it?
Hey, thanks! Yep, been to Attica many times. Not in the new truck yet but in several other trucks and it's a lot of fun. It's under new management now (since maybe 5 or so years ago?) and they've done a good job with it.
Coming from a 2013 Altima. It surprises me the Pro4X model doesn’t have telescope steering wheel, no locking fuel door and no equipped windshield fluid warning lights 🙈
Heard that a few times. I assume they limit configurations for cost savings but I've seen lots of people wanting the options of the Pro-4X with the long bed.
3 year/36k bumper to bumper and I believe 5 year / 60k mile powertrain. I’m sure you can purchase an extended warranty through pretty much every dealer.
Great info as always. I love my 2022 Pro4x. Only issue I've encountered is the cross-traffic-alert does not seem to function and the dealer is pretty useless to troubleshoot this. All settings are "on", just curious if anyone else has experienced this?
Appreciate it! I haven't had any issues with that on mine. Unfortunately, I agree with you on the dealerships. They're mediocre at best in my experience and don't seem to care to help diagnose things very often. Hopefully someone else can chime in if they've had any problems like you're having.
Very good Vid! Thank you very much! I have tacoma buy the new nissons new look is really nice. I like yotas but I'm not into the new trucks there putting out, so it's really got me looking at the nisson!👍💥
Thanks! They're really good trucks for the money and while you could argue that they're "old" because the underpinnings are very similar to the last generation Frontiers, I'd argue that that makes them more reliable and proven not to mention the fact that it can help save you some cash by being able to use 2nd gen modifications on the new truck (like bedracks, some armor, sliders, etc.).Glad it helped!
I get you what you’re saying I own alot of trucks and the biggest truck I have is a 2004 Dodge ram 3500 1 ton single axle with a Cummins turbo diesel in it and I have to say you have to get used to driving it and how we do it back in here in Washington if there’s not a parking spot for it you just take two white for my Nissan Xterra 2005 100,000 miles on it it’s going strong and I will save for the new frontier. It is a game changer for Neice competition against that Toyota Tacoma. I’m starting to see more Nissan frontiers on the road and off the road on the trails will have to see how it goes in the next five years.
I have the 23 SV long bed 4x4, love the truck, just trying to get it set up. Got the RC Killa installed ( if you don’t have the factory Bilstein in the Pro 4x , you need to get ODO Koni or Bilstein shocks for the SV). About to upgrade tires. What tire size are you using?? Your truck looks great
Thanks a lot and congrats on your SV! I've got the RC Killa and the Pro-4X Bilsteins. Planning to run those until the leafs flatten and the shocks get pretty worn and then I'll either upgrade to the Koni's are maybe just redo the whole suspension with ADO/Fox stuff at that point. I'm running Kenda Klever RT's in 285/70R17 and I love them. I've had them on my last few trucks and they're a great hybrid tire that's pretty quiet on road and excellent offroad and in all weather conditions. They're also pretty reasonable, price wise. Hope that helps!
I purchased my 2023 pro 4x off the lot and at the 10k mark, the transmission started a very small leak. The warranty covered that and a few thousand miles later, they dropped the transmission and transfer case and resealed them both. The rear differential cover also is showing signs of leaking. My truck is stock and I don’t off-road or pull anything heavy and it is a total garage princess, so what the heck Nissan? Also, the tailgate sounded like it was locking, but it wasn’t. 5 minutes later, I had the tailgate apart, lube what needed to be lubed and it worked perfectly. They need to do better.
Thanks for the info! I’m looking to buy a 3rd Gen Frontier. I may even purchase a low mileage 2022. Are there any significant changes from the 22 to the 23? Thanks for your help!
No problem! They are great trucks. I don’t believe there are significant changes from 22 to 23 but one thing that is kind of a downgrade in my opinion is that you get the auto start stop in some of the later 2023 models which you don’t get in a 2022 so if you don’t like that feature a 2022 may be a better choice.
@@AllThingsOverlanding I actually don’t like that feature at all. I have that in my 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe and I turn it off as soon as I start it. It was annoying in the beginning, but it’s just the norm now. Lol Thanks for the tip!
@@AllThingsOverlandingI just bought a lightly used 22 pro 4x with only 10,000 miles on it. I’m so glad it doesn’t have that feature. I wasn’t aware they added that. Almost nothing worse for an engine than stop start. Really good video by the way!!
I'm getting ready to shoot an "updated walkaround" in the next couple of weeks to really bring everybody up to date on where the truck sits right now. With the suspension, I modified it with the All Dogs Offroad RC Killa kit and a longer shackle in the rear about a year ago with 2K miles on the truck and haven't changed it. I did put 33's on later last year so that may be the biggest difference since the original video. Those definitely changed the look and actually raised the truck up a bit!
The 33 inch tires dropped me down several MPG so if you keep stock tires, then you should be able to get better but when I drove it out to Wyoming I was on an all dogs RC killa lift with the stock tires and I was getting about 18 to 19 (actual, dash was saying 21ish).
I purchased mine last week exactly the same specification as yours. I paid $39,999 plus tax and tags. Mine is also a 2023 and it had 26 Mi on it when I left the dealer
@luckybastard6352 simmons-rockwell horseheads ny. It looks like they have one left. Its stripped down though. No heated seats, wheel, belligerent, utilitrack. When I bought mine, they had 12! Then nissan dropped the APR deals and they were gone!
@luckybastard6352 it keeps deleting my comment! it's not allowing me to give you the name and address? Why? Google my name and add the word logistics at the end, hit send. That goes to my cell phone after hour's. I can give you the info that way.
It's actually pretty quiet. Even with the 33" Kenda RT's. They included double paned glass in the new trucks so it's WAY quieter than the old Frontiers.
I think it's a great option. The only real difference between the trucks is the rear locker, but if you're not doing more challenging trails, you'd be fine. The longer bed would be nice for a camper type set up and I believe they have higher payload.
@@AllThingsOverlanding thanks for the answer. Sucks to hear though, never understood why a manufacturer would sell a off-road vehicle with a open differential. Locking differential should be a standard equipment even on base model trucks.
Great video, I'm really enjoying your content. I have a 23 Pro4x with 1000 miles and am wondering if my transmission is acting normally. When accelerating, if I then take my foot off the accelerator quickly the transmission stays in high revs for 1-2 seconds after, then shifts to lower the RPMs. I've never driven a car that does this. Is this normal?
I've noticed that too. I think it may just be the way the 9 speed behaves, because the programming is trying to prevent unnecessary gear hunting, so if it immediately shifted down when you let your foot of the gas and then got back on the gas, you'd have no power and it would have to shift back down. At least that's my guess, haha.
It’s because Nissan uses this transmission for partial breaking. But it really does loosen up after about 6000 miles or so. Definitely try to tow a trailer with about 3000 pounds for about 500 miles. That’s when I really felt my transmission settle in. Now it’s buttery smooth.
Honestly, I haven't heard of any specific examples. I think people are just assuming since it's direct injection that it will have similar problems to other direct injection motors. But, no specific examples have come up in any of the Frontier groups that I'm in and I'm not terribly concerned about it, personally.
Love my 2012 frontier pro4x. Will likely get a third gen once I can afford it. Like others here not a fan of the turbocharged engines in trucks nowadays. Thr fuel mileage isnt as good but it easily makes up for it when it doesnt break down and leave you stranded somewhere.
Congrats and what an awesome story. Love that you stuck with Nissan and I'm a lifer too, :D. Enjoy it!
I like my 2022.
I've had a couple issues that I've had to sort out for myself and my local service department didn't seem to be very interested in hearing about it.
Other than that, it's been a great truck.
@@JP-ec9rl what were your issues? nissan dealers are garbage
Same here! Mine was Black with Gray interior. Great vehicle.
I have 41,000 on my 2022 and I've had nothing but good experiences with my truck.
That's awesome. I'm looking forward to having mine for hopefully 10-12 years (that's my goal).
@864overlanding I’ve had my 22 frontier sv since November 3, 2021 and have just hit 41,600 and have had zero problems with the truck. Hoping to put some upgrades on it later this year.
2022 pro4x with over 56,000 miles, it’s been great so far
Have had mine for 10 months. So far I really like it. Have had 9 4x4 trucks from small to mid to full size. It is my favorite truck. Great video - thanks!

I love my 23 pro4x. I have had mine for exactly 1 year now. It's the first new vehicle I have ever bought, most I have ever spent as well. I still feel like it is the best value for how it is equipped and you don't have to pay the Taco tax. I love it on trail but its still easy enough to drive in town. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure!
They are super great trucks and agree on the value for sure! Thanks for watching Ken!
My question is will they last as long as a Taco? I ask because I am just not sure based off knowing nothing about the Frontiers
I was dead set on getting the Pro4x and now the new Tacoma's came out. Tough decisions ahead I think@@AllThingsOverlanding

This truck has the only available non-turbo, six cylinder engine among all other truck manufacturers. THAT'S why I'm buying one. That and the features and available options that will keep you well under 50k.
Agreed.
I noticed the same transmission issues. My Frontier was on the recall list for the parking claw and a transmission software update. Once I got those two things done, it shifts smooth as butter.
Good to know!
What year was your Frontier?
@@MrPioneerlight2011 2022. I had the recall done about a month ago and noticed a big change in the smoothness of the transmission almost immediately.
exactly! Adaptive cruise control sucked on it. Traded my 2022 pro x for a Chevy Trail Boss much better!
Every once in a while I find mine hunting gears and stuffing them hard at about 25 mph when I'm just trying to cruise along at that speed.
I'm headed to the dealer tomorrow, so this is good info. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful and good luck!
Agree on the steering for sure. It always surprises me how many people think it's a "problem" when it's actually a feature, haha.
i just bought a '23 frontier. Thanks for the vids! Appreciate you posting the mods you recommend too!
No problem and congrats on the truck!
Thanks for sharing all of your real time experiences and information about this truck. I am in the market for a new mid-size pickup and I was zeroing in on this sort of detailed information that you have provided. It's the best perspective to acquire to help make a decision I think.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Hard to part away from my 2016 Frontier. I have over 370K Km on it and it is still going strong.
That’s awesome. The 4.0 trucks are great.
Wow, great pick up and thanks for sharing the info on your truck. Glad you're enjoying it!
I have a '23 also and it does NOT have that dreaded, God awful start/stop "feature" My Gladiator had it and it was nothing but problems, so I got rid of it. I bought this truck because it looked good, also had a V6 and none of that EPA crap.

Just bought a Pro-4X over the Taco.
Removed mud flaps. Looks way better. Also removed the steps from the side bars. They actually got in the way when getting into or out of the truck.

I drive a 2020 Tacoma TRD PRO. Of course I love it. If i was buying a new midsize today it would be the Nissan hands down.
I have loved how the Tacoma's looked for a long time, but looking at used Tacomas that are 2020 or newer and still cost as much as a new Frontier, I had to go Frontier (plus I've had like 12 Nissans that were flawless and one Lexus that was a nightmare, so there's that).
Why would you but a Nissan now over a Tacoma?

Truck prices are insane. There is nothing reasonable about them. I refuse to accept this as the new normal.
You're not wrong.
Trillions ND Trillions of dollars printed up the the last 10 years. It's going to get worse.
What’s wrong with them?
Accept it or not, it's reality.
Great to hear! I'm loving mine too. They really are great, underrated trucks for sure.
Years ago I owned a 92' chevy
S-10 Tahoe 4.3 V6.
@@joemarchand8313 I’m sorry to say I sold my Nissan before I was able to determine what the noise was.
They flashed the trans soft ware and it was weird for about 500 miles. Now it is great. Old Skool truck.!
Love it! Can’t wait to do it to my truck!
@@AllThingsOverlanding my understanding is, it was a recall item.
Great update, sounds like it’s a solid option. I’m in the market for a new truck. I’ll definitely consider the Frontier.
They're really great trucks and I think they're really competitive in the current space.
It appears you lifted or leveled your truck. What did you do to it? What sizeof tires? Do they rub? I like the look.

Great video. I appreciate your insights.
Thanks so much!
It also took mine longer than expected… but it does. And I just love driving my truck anywhere.
Great review. If they made the Pro4X with a 6 foot bed, I'd already have one.

Glad to hear it's probably just a wear in thing. And good call outs on SV versus Pro-4X!
Just bought a 2024 pro4X today very similar to yours. I am excited to go try it out.

I have a 2012 Pro-4x and love it. Been considering a new one. Thanks for the vid!
No problem, glad it was helpful!
got mine in July, still loving it, it does have a wide turning radius and my transmission is still a bit searchy and on occasion downshifts while going downhill kinda like your roundabout experience, previous ride was also a 05 Xterra that i got 315k miles out of, she thrived on neglect and abuse but it certainly could turn on a dime compared to my new Frontier 😜
Haha, you pick your battles. 😂
78.3k miles on my 22 Pro-4X and going strong.
No problems with it?

Great deal, get it!
Would you prefer the cloth seat over the leather seat? If so can you explain why? I’m looking at getting a frontier so any insight is appreciated.

I just picked up the same truck, $7k off MSRP. I'm beyond happy with the truck.
Wow, great deal! Congrats on the truck!
Could you please tell me about your deal?
Where did you get your truck?
Doubtful
The 9 speed transmission is a Mercedes design licensed out to jayto so it doesn't have any of the same problems as older jaytco transmissions as most of them are cvt transmissions which tend to fail early in the vehicles life from all manufacturers
Good info, thanks!
@all things over landing wondering what lift and tires etc. you are running? Thanks,
Short answer is it's the RC Killa lift with adjustable camber bolts from All Dogs Offroad.
Maybe your spare tire is a bit loose... crawl under there and tighten it up if you can.
Excellent review. Thanks !!!

I’m torn between three trucks
2023 Toyota trd off road 32k miles for 37k
2024 nissan frontier pro 4 x brand new for 39k
2017 ford raptor 100k miles (cam phasers replaced) for 37k
Can’t make my mind up
I mean, you're asking the guy with a Frontier, so I would say 0 miles, full warranty, most recent year, no brainer for the Frontier.
Thinking about getting a 2024 pro4x. Wanted the new taco off road but it cost way too much.
They are a lot more expensive. Kind of surprising (but I guess not based on how they've been pricier historically).
I have a 2023 frontier sv. I love it. I'm looking at some upgrades in terms of sturdy bumpers and bed storage. Very nice truck.
Thanks and congrats on yours! I'm also starting to think about bumpers for sure. I did build my own simple drawer system that's been working great, but there are some options (from molle panels for the sides of the bed to a Decked system or similar) for sure.
I was thinking about getting one but the transmission issues worry me
I have heard a few folks say things, but here's the thing.
Yep, all good points! Thanks for sharing and glad it was helpful!
I'm curious what tires your running. And did you put a lift on it and if so what type

Thanks.

Yep, definitely heard that and it would be nice. I'm still loving the truck and looking forward to future adventures.
a few things on interior and exterior i would add at least on the pro 4x i bet is on the base model as well. when you key less remote start when the truck is warming up it has both inside door defrost but also has defrost on the door handles so if for some reason you had ice on the door handle it would melt it.

@@eddiehaskell5578 guess it depends on your needs. The crew cab works great for the wife up front and both kids in the back plus some gear.
I bought my 2023 Frontier 4 weeks ago. Came from a 2018 Genesis G80 Sport. I love the Frontier and do not regret my choice one bit.
No long bed option on the Pro 4X ☹️. Had a 2016 extended cab long bed Pro4x and it was a great truck.
Yeah, kind of a bummer if you need the space.
Ya Nissan, build one!
They're fixing that for 2025.
Welcome! And yes, it does disable the whole system so no beeps or braking!
Best decision you’ll ever make - is to move out of that state. Glad I did

Heard that a few times. I assume they limit configurations for cost savings but I've seen lots of people wanting the options of the Pro-4X with the long bed.
What is the standard warranty on this truck? Can I purchase an extended warranty?

Yep, lots still to come for sure!
Yeah, that sucks. Sounds like they took care of you though. I have about 24k miles on mine and no issues at all yet luckily.

What kind of mpg on your long trips? I had a 2019 frontier and i got 16.5 being a grandma at 60mph. Im hoping this new one does better
The 33 inch tires dropped me down several MPG so if you keep stock tires, then you should be able to get better but when I drove it out to Wyoming I was on an all dogs RC killa lift with the stock tires and I was getting about 18 to 19 (actual, dash was saying 21ish).

Is this the boulder gray pearl color?
Yep, that’s boulder gray!
@@AllThingsOverlanding glad to hear mine is not the only one. It was surprising at first, but I'm getting used to it and wondered if it was "normal".
It’s because Nissan uses this transmission for partial breaking. But it really does loosen up after about 6000 miles or so. Definitely try to tow a trailer with about 3000 pounds for about 500 miles. That’s when I really felt my transmission settle in. Now it’s buttery smooth.
How common are the direct injection related issues?
Honestly, I haven't heard of any specific examples. I think people are just assuming since it's direct injection that it will have similar problems to other direct injection motors. But, no specific examples have come up in any of the Frontier groups that I'm in and I'm not terribly concerned about it, personally.
