I don't realistically do heavy off roading. We have toys/alternate vehicles for that. That being said, I am very satisfied with my '22 Frontier SV. It's towed 5,000lbs + back and forth from PA-FL without a problem. Plenty of power. Transmission does a decent job engine breaking and is definitely noticeable for what it is. It's definitely not a big human back seat, but it totally works in a pinch. The steering wheel not telescope, but it's actually in my seating position so it's not a problem. I can confirm with you saying that I do not like how a forced induction engine drives. We do a TON of lighter weight towing with our off road toys, etc... and I know the turbo motor have power, mpg, etc, etc, etc... I will avoid it at all costs cus I genuinely dislike how they tow. In a little family car, fine. I just use my truck for truck-esque stuff too much and absolutely cannot stand the turbo engine. The linear speed, predictable power, and simplicity of a naturally aspirated engine will be my truck choice until it's no longer an option.
I am 100% Ford, I own three vehicles and all three are Ford's. But with that said I'd take the Nissan over that Ranger. The Nissan has everything a person needs without over complicating it. Not to mention the N/A V6. Andre said they've tested the small displacement with turbo engines before, one year & 10,000 miles is not testing. My 2008 F-150 has the 4.2 N/A V6 with a little over 200,000 miles on it. And that's 200,000 miles of hauling & towing on it with no issues at all. No it's not the fastest, no it can't jump a dirt hill, but it's ready to go to work.
"If we have to have environmental regulations, we need one that requires manufacturers to warranty their cars through 100,000 miles. If your car doesn't average 200,000k miles you suck as a manufacturer." - Not entirely a throw-away-thought?
I gotta say I know it's not apples to apples comparison but the 2012 Ford f350 with a 6.2 gas engine will not die. But the Diesels had to have work done well before the Ford even needed transmission work. Pulling the same heavy trailers. The motor has 328k and had one coil pack replaced and an exhaust manifold bolt replaced. Never leaked fluids and is still going. Ridiculously durable.
The Ford 4.2 V6 was one of the worst truck engines they ever had. Lacks torque and sucks fuel. My dad had one in reg cab 4x4 and the 5.4 Triton F-150 Supercab 4x4 he bought next got better mpgs. Now he has a 2.3 Ranger that is getting much better mpgs. Best combo of power and fuel economy.
@@302Mustang13 I will say that I was expecting better mileage out of my 4.2 but I drive it every day & 90% of the time it has tools, & material's in it, & a lot of the time it's pulling a small trailer 5X10 loaded with materials. And it averages 18 mpg, my brother's F150 Platinum with the Coyote does better, so yes I was a little disappointed in that. My last oil analysis was flawless with 8,000 mile changes on AMSOIL.
I'd go with the Nissan because I HATE when manufacturers use massive touch screens. Buttons and knobs are much more intuitive for controls. I like the 8" screen for CarPlay in my F-150, but any larger than that is totally unnecessary and it eats in to the space where they should be putting buttons instead.
agreed, I love the Hardbody wheels and exterior treatment overall because it reminds me of my childhood (my family owned a 97), but man nostalgia is expensive.
Wholly F! Take my money!!!! That Nissan Frontier Hardbody!!!! Had a 1986.5 Hardbody SEV6 5 speed 4x4 back in the day. It was the same color, same wheels.(different tires) It was NOT a 4door obviously. But what a truck! I miss it to this very day. I had a 1995 Pathfinder SEV6 4x4. Same colors, same wheels. Was fantastic as well! This NEW truck/trim is a must have for Nissan enthusiasts. Hell, I don't even need a truck anymore and want to go out and buy it and I am only 53 seconds into this video!
My first vehicle was a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab 4.0L V6 with manual transmission. I paid $15,500 for it out the door and I got rid of it in 2008 with 200,000 miles. Now I wish I would have held on to it. LOL
It wasn’t my first vehicle but in 1990 I bought a new XLT Supercab 4x4 Ranger with automatic for 18k out the door. Sold it to a friend 2002 with 298k miles…replaced one water pump, brakes and spark plugs only. I believe he had over 400k when he sold it with same motor and transmission.
I had a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT with an extended cab (suicide doors) with an auto trans. I got rid of mine in 2001 with 210,000 miles and all I did was replace the water pump on the truck $350. The rest was regular maintainence. 4 sets of tires and front brakes 4 or 5 times. I never had to replace the rear brakes. Loved the truck.
@@paulchapman1933 They are solid little trucks, and I miss the one I used to drive. I am not no sure all of the new complicated GDI turbo engines (from any manufacturer) are going to be as reliable.

I owned a rust free (CA truck) 1984 Nissan 720 4x4 with a 5 spd. Mine did great up until 284K miles when I rebuilt the synchros on the gearbox and the engine. Not too shabby considering the Z24 engine was notorious for heads cracking.
My very first car, at age 18, was a new 1975 Datsun truck, 4 speed manual trans, $3700 total price, including all taxes and license. I still have the original loan paperwork, at 10% interest, The truck was very durable, and reliable. I modified it putting on headers, 2 1/4" exhaust (for a nice throaty sound), Offenhauser intake manifold, and Mallory Unilite electronic ignition system. I was a part of the new mini truck craze, that started in the mid 70's in southern California. Glad that you still have yours, and that it's held up so long for you!
Best Frontier is the S. If you're in the same config (quad cab, 4x4) you get 1,290 lbs of payload for 36k. 1,290 is not amazing, but is far better than what's provided here.
My local Nissan lot has some crazy incentives on these frontiers, so even though they are priced the same, the frontier will come out about $5-7K lower than the Ranger after all said and done. I made a video on it
I've never owned a Ford but I would consider one. I've owned two Nissan trucks and both rusted out before 7 years of ownership here in the northeast and I take care of my vehicles. Aside from the rust, the Nissan was a good truck
@@Dusdaddy of course they are going to make it about price. The ranger FX4 is inferior to the PRO-4x from an offroad standpoint. Their job is to help Ford sell trucks.
The Ford for leasing to a young person that only needs a truck for a fashion statement. The Nissan for purchasing to a grownup that has property and will drive it 20 plus years till the wheels fall off. That’s why I have the Frontier.
The complaint about engine covers is so childish. Who genuinely cares how pretty an engine bay is? With how complicated these bays are getting, just leave them open without a cover so its easier to see around at a quick glance.
moreover this is an easy fix, Ford sells the cover (or at least did for the previous gen). I think it should be standard equipment because it's just a small piece of plastic that should not cost Ford more than $30 to make/source, but if it's not there it won't hurt reliability, which is much more important than aesthetics
I miss my Frontier Terribly. I bought the 2020 old body style with new engine. It consistently got my 20-21 mpgs. Unfortunately I had to part ways because my family was growing and got an F150.
An f150 gets better mpg than a frontier, it’s depends on what engine you choose. The supercrew f150 has a huge rear seating area, at 6’3 I still have room of 4-6” between the knee and seatback
The Ranger being able to fit 4ft between the wheel wells is great. With the tailgate down a 4X8 foot sheet of plywood only hangs about a foot and a half beyond the back of the truck.
@@tc6580 I use a 5x8 trailer attached to my little ford ecosport for that. 22mpg verses taking my F250 out at 14mpg. Trailer does atv duty and also is pulled by mower when we are picking up sticks out the yard. Very handy.
I just purchased the 2024 chevy Colorado trailboss with all the options I wanted leather interior cruise control spray in bedliner etc for over 5k less than these 2 trucks cost.
I'm hoping that one day you guys will actually make a good comparison when it comes to the Frontier, you ALWAYS compare it to the wrong trim. The comparisons you should be doing are as follows: Frontier Pro4x vs Ford Ranger FX4 Frontier Pro4x vs Tacoma TRD Offroad (3rd gen) Frontier Pro4x vs Chevy Colorado Trail Boss and Z71 Frontier Pro4x vs GMC Canyon Elevation and AT4 I did all of these comparisons recently when truck shopping and quickly realized that the Pro4x is by far the best value for the money. Sure it has it's drawbacks but it's value is undeniable in the segment, last of a dying breed.
The ranger really is a beast. I had a 2020 with the 2.3L and loved it. Bought it on rebate for $30K. It Towed and Hauled effortlessly; Even in the Tennessee mountains. I put multiple performance upgrades on and it was a blast. In the end I traded it for a new Bronco bc despite all of that, the ranger was miserable on long distance trips. If and when I buy another truck; for $46K, I’d just spend the extra money and get a heavy duty. Midsize trucks are nice in principle but I don’t see the market for them when they cost this much.
I like the Frontier, but if I saw these 2 trucks sitting side by side on a lot and they were priced the exact same, I would go with the Ranger. Rear locker, better tires, and payload win over a roll bar and nostalgic wheels for me
Real-world prices might vary for the next 12 months or so??? - It will be harder to get a Ranger without a mark-up but a Frontier may come with a discount?
If I am going by looks alone I would get the Nissan. The huge deal breaker for these trucks for me though is no 4WD auto. That mode is what I use the most on road when the weather is bad.
@@firstlast--- 4WD is great for off roading or the roads are a complete dump, but not great for the drivetrain on paved surfaces hence why I like 4 auto since it acts more like AWD which is better for variable conditions.
When it comes to trucks and cars I want normal sized screens none of this 10 inch or larger screens. Sure it's easier to use and see. But night driving it's distracting. My idea may not carry any support but I'd be okay with the screen being big when parked or backing up. But when driving it gets smaller to reduce to overall lighting. Even in dark mode it blinds me when someone calls. And only reason for it to be full sized backing up for the camera if it's available.

One thing you may want to include in your midsize truck reviews is whether or not you can flat tow its very important for rv'ers who like to flat tow behind there rv. I believe chevy, gmc, ford can be flat towed, and Nissan, toyota can not unless its a manual 4x4.

After driving my f150 ecoboost 300k miles tried a nissan titan with a v8. I just couldn't pull the trigger because it seemed like it was lacking power. The ecoboost has been solid. Sure it might coast $1500 more in maintenance over 10 years but it is worth it. I probably saved 20k in fuel.
Truck trials sounds awesome. Your videos a couple years back was a big source of information when I researching mid-size trucks. There was a lot to go through since it was usually 2 manufacturers compared at a time.
Turbo engines are built for emissions not fuel economy. Will take a non turbo engine over a turbo all day long, more to break and more to cost you money.
@charliehargrave7458 that is wrong. A turbo can be built for fuel economy or power. So many people ignore the fact that Engines over seas have used turbos just fine for over 20 years. Change your oil properly, and most turbos don't have issues.
I can get over what the EPA states with our Ecoboost. I also often get worse when I’m driving how I like to drive. But it’s possible and similar to my 5.0 where I can either do better or worse depending on the day or trip.
Andre, your Tacoma is literally a base model truck that has 4x4 and that it is. The Ranger is a much better deal pricewise. From all mis-size truck, I like the Ranger Raptor the most. I am a Toyota fan, but the pricing of the new Tacoma sucks, big time.
Good comparison. I do love the power and torque being available at a calmer 2000 RPM VS taching out an NA engine. And that payload on the Nissan is a joke, they could have done better there. I would happily own either truck. I daily a 2020 Ranger though
The reason my folks and I traditionally never went for a turbo car was actually insurance costs. Now it's hard to not have a car with turbo and insurance is insane no matter what.
Nissan is now doing what GM used to do and be known for, which is being a little more old school I terms of technology and features, and I'm all for it! I like that the Nissan offers a large displacement, naturally aspirated V6. The dash and screen are a little behind the Ford but I don't buy trucks for the toys and screens on the dash. Something tells me the Frontier will hold up better in the long run. I don't trust Fords at all due to me and my family's previous experiences with FoMoCo, and I ESPECIALLY don't trust them to build a long-term, reliable small turbo I4...
I would go Frontier, I am a Toyota Fan boy and since they went Turbo I am out. I really like the Frontier. Nissan could gain a ton of market share if they just changed some of the design to what people want. Do some more blackout wheels and some crazy colors like a orange or a green like toyota has done. follow the trend. front locker would also be nice,
Frontier all day for me. Naturally aspirated power for the win. I also prefer the simplicity of the interior. As much as I love the look of this Hardbody trim, I'd opt for a base "S" trim 2-door. I need the lower price and better utility. The Hardbody kit is so cool though. I love the retro 1980s wheels!
I like the manual rear window; many trucks now have either an electric rear window, or solid glass. The excuse was the rear was too big for the driver to reach and close while driving (in case of a gas attack, I guess), but clearly that isn’t the case as the rear of the ranger is just as big as many trucks that don’t offer it.
Y did you get the hard body .lots of extra stuff to raise the price. The pro4x wood have been a better option. And it has the locker. If you are going to take them offroad it would be more fair.
The majority of power tools today are cordless. Anyone that works out of their truck knows how convenient it is to be able to charge batteries when there is no power or when you need to get to the next job and charge on the way. Everything is rechargeable now, I've had a inverter in my work van for the last 20 years for this reason. It's nice they're building them in now.
If it's a V8 ,V6. it's all about the sound 😀. I was a Service Writer for 20 years. I would buy the naturally aspirated V6 over a 4 cylinder turbo. More heat, more wear and more seals with a turbo.
You guys should look at fit and finish between trucks. This video makes it sound like the Ford is the clear choice but they have suffered from reliability issues across several of their vehicles the last few years. I haven't sat in the newest generation Ford, but the previous gen felt terrible inside compared to this gen Frontier. All the panels flexed a lot. The panel gaps didn't line up. It was sad.
Nathan being from the San Fernando Valley explains a lot! Not a bad thing though. I got my driver's license at the Glendale DMV office in April 1972, driving a Datsun PL520. My wife, who was a Valley girl from James Monroe high school, bought a 1985 Ford Ranger 4wd new. Both trucks have changed so drastically for the better. I considered a midsize truck last year. But bought a Jeep JLU to tow behind our Ram 2500 4wd 6.7L with a 4wheel popup camper. Another great review, with lots of information not typically found elsewhere.
Vehicle prices are out of control. I paid $42k new for my fully-loaded GMC Canyon with the diesel back in 2017. It would've easily been $10k more for the same truck today and even that would've been a steal compared to what these new-gen truck prices are.
In the end , nissan wins. Do a 10(ten) year challenge. The ranger with it turbos would burn out in 3 years and have to be replaced. The nissan is " the little engine that could" . No issues besides regular maintenance
Not sure where the notion that turbos burn out in a handful of years comes from. We’re still driving a 2015 Ecoboost with 85k on it and it’s running perfectly fine with no engine or turbo issues since new. That’s not to say that at some point we won’t experience an issue but it’s now over 9 years of driving and a replacement turbo is like $450 currently should we need to replace it. Not a bad proposition in my mind.

I 100% agree. I wish manufacturers still made a true mid sized work truck. Manual seats, crank windows, manual locks, no nanny safety features, make AC an option, basic V6 without displacement on demand and without direct injection, and of course a manual transmission.
They need to make these trucks with vinyl flooring and no fluff to bring the pricing down. I had the original Nissan Hardbody in 1990 with a 5 spd manual and paid $6k new. I loved that truck and had zero issues with it.
sadly it has that 9 spd trans which is what most manufacturers buy from mercedez benz. Garbage transmission that wont make it past 200k miles no matter how much you baby it. Im waiting until honda sticks in their own 10 spd built transmission as they have with the odyssey since 2019, to consider a ridgeline or frontier using nissan self built trans as with all prev generations.

I will say that I was expecting better mileage out of my 4.2 but I drive it every day & 90% of the time it has tools, & material's in it, & a lot of the time it's pulling a small trailer 5X10 loaded with materials. And it averages 18 mpg, my brother's F150 Platinum with the Coyote does better, so yes I was a little disappointed in that.
But with 200,000 miles on it and I've never touched it other than maintenance "oil changes" & it has always performed with anything I hook to it I'm happy with it.
I bought a Ford Escape & trailer it home with absolutely no problem.
These small overpressure turbo engines they're pumping out today has plenty of power but I don't believe they will ever last like any N/A engine will
@@scottyellis3442 We were too and I told him the 4.6 V8 (there was no 5.4 at the time he ordered his 4.2 F-150) would do better and get better mpgs.

My local Nissan lot has some crazy incentives on these frontiers, so even though they are priced the same, the frontier will come out about $5-7K lower than the Ranger after all said and done. I made a video on it

Frontier Pro4x vs Ford Ranger FX4
Frontier Pro4x vs Tacoma TRD Offroad (3rd gen)
Frontier Pro4x vs Chevy Colorado Trail Boss and Z71
Frontier Pro4x vs GMC Canyon Elevation and AT4
I did all of these comparisons recently when truck shopping and quickly realized that the Pro4x is by far the best value for the money.
The huge deal breaker for these trucks for me though is no 4WD auto. That mode is what I use the most on road when the weather is bad.
It's just one dial. Less things to fail also
Ranger Raptor has it
4 auto isn't a big deal. Ford's switch into 4wd extremely fast because of the vacuum hubs
@@firstlast--- 4WD is great for off roading or the roads are a complete dump, but not great for the drivetrain on paved surfaces hence why I like 4 auto since it acts more like AWD which is better for variable conditions.

My idea may not carry any support but I'd be okay with the screen being big when parked or backing up. But when driving it gets smaller to reduce to overall lighting. Even in dark mode it blinds me when someone calls. And only reason for it to be full sized backing up for the camera if it's available.

It's all about how you drive it. If you always put your foot in it, it will lose fuel economy because of the boost.

Nissan is now doing what GM used to do and be known for, which is being a little more old school I terms of technology and features, and I'm all for it! I have a 2017 GMC Canyon with the V6. Average 24 mpg after 53,000 miles on the trip odometer, which I have never cleared.
Plenty of power .
Put them on the rollers!!
Andre's Trail Boss is the best value in the mid size category.
If you add cruise control, it's not as good of a price.
Am the only one that doesn’t like the giant vertical display? Smaller 9-10in traditional horizontal makes more sense.
…Except Nissan is offering massive discounts on the frontier. $5000-8000 off depending on trim.
It was sad.
Half ton pickup prices for midsize trucks. And that's being kind.
The hardbody edition should have been an absolute bare bones 4x4
NA ICE > Turbo ICE
Gotta love the price of EVERYTHING nowadays. Trucks are nuts as everyone knows. I just paid over $3 for a pepperoni stick
Ford all the way
Nathan being from the San Fernando Valley explains a lot!
Always up for a pickup comparison!
Vehicle prices are out of control. I paid $42k new for my fully-loaded GMC Canyon with the diesel back in 2017. It would've easily been $10k more for the same truck today and even that would've been a steal compared to what these new-gen truck prices are.
Congratulations
In the end , nissan wins. Do a 10(ten) year challenge. The ranger with it turbos would burn out in 3 years and have to be replaced. The nissan is " the little engine that could" . No issues besides regular maintenance
durr, newfangled turbos gotta be replaced every oil change, reckon, durr
@@smithjones1906 Being an asshole isn’t an argument. It does give the other guy the automatic win, though.
@@garysarratt1 Remember to leave a few coins in his cup, hero
Not sure where the notion that turbos burn out in a handful of years comes from. We’re still driving a 2015 Ecoboost with 85k on it and it’s running perfectly fine with no engine or turbo issues since new. That’s not to say that at some point we won’t experience an issue but it’s now over 9 years of driving and a replacement turbo is like $450 currently should we need to replace it. Not a bad proposition in my mind.
@@ALMX5DP Come back when you've put on a quarter million miles like on my 2013 Nissan with NA 4.0L V-6 and we can talk turkey. 85k miles is barely broke in.
Honda Ridgeline would be my choice at that price realm.
Buy a turbo 4 if that's what you want but do not try to convince me they are 'better than non turbo and mpg is really not that impressive . There is a new automotive term 'acceptable oil usage' is directed to 4 cylinder turbo engines and the fact they require a premium synthetic oil and keep a very close eye on oil level and leaks. Really??
Nissan's VQ V6 had engine oil consumption on the uprev engine. Doesnt matter what type of engine it is NA or turbo. Its shit if it was made of shit
@@beexiong2995 No oil usage is a turbo problem and has all ways been the draw back to any turbo no matter the 'brand' and 4 cylinder turbos are in fact notorious for oil usage
Ranger gives you led headlights, trailer brake controller, rear locker and a lot of payload, it’s a no brainer
Have you just got the new Ranger style in the US like 2 years after the rest of the world?
Yep been in Australia for 2 years
The old one came something like eight years late, right? Two years late doesn’t sound so bad
It’s because years ago Ford went all-in on full size trucks and discontinued the Ranger. In the US “midsize” trucks are an afterthought and Ford chose to import.
Haven’t seen CANT get a king cab let alone a hardbody here in Edmonton Alberta. Banned from Canada?
@@gregmoessner3104Visited 3 dealerships to be told so. Lost sale because I would buy an SV but need a 6 foot bed and Kingcab to fit in my garage. I am very dissapointed in the paltry payload and wish for similar numbers to the Ranger
I had a 2019 frontier which i wound up selling for a Alot more than i bought it during the pandemic boom. It was a fantastic truck, never had a single issue with it and we did a good deal of offroading in snow and mud all sorts of terrains. But it was last gen and I'm amazed to see how little they changed with this model. 47k is absolutely too much lol
Omg the wheels 😍😍on the nissan so old and classic
No style to em they are bland
That is Right! Tfl Never talks about Reliability of the vehicles they recommend. They never have owners bringvtheir 5 or 10vyear old vehicles on their show. To discuss the problems American vehicles experience. Let's compare the American & Japanese cars, trucks after a few years! A 4 cylinder turbo truck will not last as long as a 6 or 8 cylinder.
The problem is that even the best turbos in the world last 100k miles at most best case scenario so all having a turbo does is add a 7500 to 10 k bill every 100k miles
Ouch
@@jfruser ah now I see where your bias lies if you don’t question any of that at all.
Where are you basing that information from?
@@firstlast--- my guess is internet fueled ignorance.
@@ALMX5DP If by "bias" you mean accumulated experience over decades, sure I am biased.
I am considering a Ram Crew Cab with the pentastar vs a Frontier, both can be had for mid 30's, to me a midsize truck is cramped
Why is the rear of the Ranger jacked up so high? I looked at the previous version and it's actually higher than a F150. Really stupid. Makes the truck unusable.
Towing and payload , stiff springs. Its a capable truck with regards to towing especially.
@@jeedwards1981 Towing & payload with LESS stiff springs. That is why they need the altitude. To keep base ride height, they would need stifer springs with less travel.
@@jfruser ok i believe ya, i always thought it had super stiff springs, lol, im not very smart haha
The high rear end also makes the truck a lot safer. Cars and Crossovers will go under the truck and their occupants will take the brunt of the crash forces.
A brand new 2024 Frontier Pro-4X in my area sales for 40k. It's hard to beat at that price, compared to everything else.
Yeah, the Ranger has more tech! But that's just more junk to go wrong. I've gotten along without °360 cameras for decades without a problem. For me less is more. Just give me a N/A engine, that lasts. Wish midsize trucks would have a 6' bed. Both are too much money. Oh, a manual in the Nissan would be nice!
I 100% agree. I wish manufacturers still made a true mid sized work truck. Manual seats, crank windows, manual locks, no nanny safety features, make AC an option, basic V6 without displacement on demand and without direct injection, and of course a manual transmission.
I'll take the Ford for the 1st 100,000 miles. The Nissan for the 2nd 100,000 miles and finally the Toyota for the 3rd 100.000 miles.
Not if the Toyota is the turd Gen Tacoma. It’s the most problematic Tacoma yet.
They need to make these trucks with vinyl flooring and no fluff to bring the pricing down. I had the original Nissan Hardbody in 1990 with a 5 spd manual and paid $6k new. I loved that truck and had zero issues with it.
I just bought a 2024 Honda Ridgline Trailsport, and it's an awesome ride. I'm hoping I'll get that Honda reliability out of it.
sadly it has that 9 spd trans which is what most manufacturers buy from mercedez benz. Garbage transmission that wont make it past 200k miles no matter how much you baby it. Im waiting until honda sticks in their own 10 spd built transmission as they have with the odyssey since 2019, to consider a ridgeline or frontier using nissan self built trans as with all prev generations.
Hi Guys from Oz,
I drive a Nissan Navara 2.3 litre diesel twin turbo with a payload of 1000kg .
Most medium size trucks over here have a similar payload and can tow up to 3500kg .
American medium size trucks payload is pitiful!
The Ranger is similar over here in Oz And available with V6, 3 litre turbo diesel. Very good towing platform!
N/A ftw!
