Fourth year medical student here! I love your videos and so happy I found you two. You guys share valuable information that I don’t get in medical school! Thank you for sharing!!!!
I never heard this before the first time I watched this video. I have been to a podiatrist as well as a shoe specialty store. Thank you for educating me. I have motion control shoes now and the completely stabilize me feet and ankles. Doctors, physical therapists and nurse practitioners told me NOTHING.
This information is really important, people that don't know the proper shoes for an activity will get affected in years, I think it's correct to call it a bad habit.
Agreed.. most kids these or even parents worry about the style. Is it nice?? how much is it? $45 (on sale) it must not be good. $260 for shoes thats insane but it must be the best shoe... wrong its something called, Marketing. as long as you feel comfortable. I always try a pair of shoes on and actually simulate the activity what I will be doing. such as basketball shoes id put them on and do some cuts and jumps. I may look funny but hey this is an investment might as well test it. not just walk up and down the store.
Exactly. I had some Nike shoes for running and it gave me Plantar Fascilitis (sp?). I still have issues till this day! Running Camp advisors told us Nike shoes were the worst for your feet and running. Wish I knew this before!
Nike isn't the worst, they fit some people but they can't fit everyone. You can say that with any brand, I've been a loyal Saucony customer because I don't experience issues with them but recommending them to everybody would be naive at best.
Mee, too! New balance was recommended to me by my podiatrist! They have the wisest and best toebox for people with feet like mine!! I previously wore New Balance, but it was recommended to me to wear New Balance SERIES 900 or better! It has made a fabulous difference in my foot pain! The pain in my feet 🦶 is virtually gone now!
Brooks sneakers have changed my life…. Glycerine 19 gts …. Completely flat footed , RN working 12 hour shifts… there was no break in period - felt great immediately
I gotta agree with him. One of the worst part about buying shoes is it there’s hundreds of options but there’s really only a handful anyone who actually is running on a regular basis should be seriously looking at and they are all in the 100-200 range. All the 85ish dollar shoes that most people will go for are trash for actual putting in miles. Two things you should never skimp on. Is your shoes and your bed. If there’s two things you’re going to splurge on and get the best that you can afford, it should be your high mileage shoes and your bed.
This is a great session, but maybe it would be helpful to have other people with you on this one to show exactly what a low arch and a high arch look like compared to the average or normal arch.
Thank you Bob and Brad for the demonstration of how to tell your arch type. I never realized I was more on the flat feet side. This has helped with my search for my trouble feet.
I have found barefoot running shoes to be immensely helpful for knee pain, because of the gait adjustment and forefoot running style. It's not for everyone, but if transitioned into slowly, barefoot/minimal shoes I have found to be wonderful. It's hard going back to chunky running shoes.
@@lindagray1809 There's many factors that you didn't mention about your feet. Altra shoes though, are zero drop from heel to toe, but have more padding at the bottom than most minimalist shoes if you're not ready to get that much "barefoot".
Same! They don't need to be literally "minimalist", just zero drop. I started running in Altras (mainly for the toe splay), and actually they made heel striking hard. Transitioned to forefoot and it was like rediscovering running again.
I watched a UA-cam video also about shoes and specifically women’s shoes. The presenter demonstrated that shoes with a pointed toe, didn’t even have to be very pointed, had the effect of pushing the great toe over crowding the other toes. That also had the effect of removing the stability given by the structure of inner side of the foot as the toe was no longer in its natural position, leading to pronation and knee problems. It was like a light clicked on! Yes!
What an excellent video - just found your web site, and am very impressed. Have kept a running diary since 1994 and have just gone past 25000 miles this week (40000km). I have never had a running injury, which I put down to always running in decent shoes. Tend to buy same model each time. About 5 years ago I made a determined effort to change my running style from heel to forefoot running. Agree about the sore calf muscles initially, but my shoes last almost twice as long. They used to wear out fairly quickly on the heel - I even used to buy tubes of shoe goo to build up the worn heels. With forefoot running the heels dont wear at all and there is a gradual and slow wear on the forefoot part of the shoe.
Go to a local running shop. Their staff is well trained. They let me walk around and try them out. They told me which one is the best for me, and what size I should buy. Another brand had a shoe celebrating breast cancer survivorship. Being a survivor, I bought it. My physical therapist scolded me, and I’m back to the original brand
The sneakers are some good foot wear.I have 4 pairs that my Son bought me because ye said I like to walk a lot and walking distance they are very comfortable foot wear. When I walk in them my feet never felt tired after walking long distance.I used the sneaker for cancer walk's, Shopping etc. Many thanks to Bob and brad for your useful resources,And God bless everyone.
I don't know if you are the two most famous physical therapists on the internet. I don't even know if you are real physical therapist. But I know for sure that you have the best video intro on the whole youtube.
My foot is basically the same as the smaller doctors except in a size 12. The first doctor has a very medium arch like I do, but medium is not the average. From my time, playing soccer and running track and just being around teammates and friends, it seems like most people are on the flatter side.. with some having a mid range arch and few ha I a high arch. People with high arches tend to be more athletic in terms of explosive power like sprinting and stuff like that and flat-footed people tend to be better at walking for long periods of time. In the mid range, people tend to be kind of good at everything. But not the best at anything.
Kierra Bunch I have been following Bob and Brad for 3+ years? Physical Therapy is EXPENSIVE even with Ins. These two are giving it away FREE! I tell everyone to watch these guys.
Years ago I once spent a decent amount on a shoe. Unfortunately it was the wrong one for me. Today I have found this video and understood where I went wrong.
Been having pain on top of my foot while walking. I think my shoes are I’ll-fitting. I would say my arches are like Brad’s. Helpful video, gentlemen. Thank you!
See if you have a Fleet Feet store near you. They do a 3D scan of your feet and email you a copy to keep and use. It includes a breakdown of lots of information about each foot and where they differ from each other. They also spent almost an hour helping me get the best shoes for my feet. It was free, except the shoes.
Great information here in this video for fitting different types of feet in various categories of supportive footwear. I’ve been in the comfort shoe business for about 6 years and this is exactly what I educate people on.
Speaking of good footwear salesman: IF you find one to help you and more remarkable is one that knows anything about shoes or feet!!!! Even the stores that do have help, they just truly guess how to help you!!! I think they are just like the gas station attendants of long ago!! Lol 😀
For me the Sketchers 'go walk 3' did it. I always preferred shoes that didn't restrict me too much (like converse chucks). But because of crazy heel pain I needed something comfy to walk in. And these little guys are just like walking on clouds. They are relatively loose because of all that softness and the air circulation is terrible (sauna from hell on hot days). But the softness and free space to move my toes make it so worth it. I can even go sightseeing in them. Impossible otherwise. I have them for two years now and I will need new ones, but they really are worth the money if walking hurts you. Maybe it's just me, but they did save me (I was hysterical from pain before I found them).
Alta lone peaks 5’s are very popular for thru hikers ( less blisters, wide toe box, shaped like a foot , not pointed on the front ) last about 500 miles. Zero drop so they take some “ ball of the foot landing/ training “ . If you do a lot of running other shoes will be better, even though these are called trail runners. I found Nike and New Balance were the equivalent of eating fast food to your feet.
Thank you so much guys You are amazing! This video was extremely helpful, I finally was able to figure out my wife's and my son's foot, knees and hips problems. Thank you again indeed
I have new balance shoes with a rollbar because i am totally flat foot. They are the only shoes that actually seem to last me because my foot can no longer warp it out of shape. Love them. Too bad they r so expensive
You briefly mention forefoot runners and more minimal shoes. I would like to get your opinion regarding whether minimal and "zero drop" shoes are beneficial for people with flat feet. I have flat feet, I am a forefoot runner, and I love minimal shoes for both walking and running. My rationale is that by being a forefoot runner, there is no real need for arch support when forefoot running.
For me, the best running shoe was none at all. I kept getting plantar fasciitis from my early 20's to early 40's. I was a heel striker. I heard about these crazy people that could run marathons barefoot. It took me 2 years to toughen up the bones and connective tissues in my feet, then I could run for miles and miles on any surface barefoot. No injuries at all--until I ran in shoes again. NB: I'm not recommending that you or anybody run barefoot. It worked for me--someone highly prone to foot injuries.
Have been watching your videos since yesterday and finally found some real and great information! Tnanks to you I found out I have been suffering with Plantar Fasciitis. I started doing all the exercises and hope to feel better soon. Also providing the night splint brace! Super thanks to you both! P.S. Sent some of your videos to a friend in Brazil :)
Just got into a pair of New Balance 1540 V3s... While I now look like my Dad, they are definitely the right shoes for my foot shape and hip and ankle issues, and i now understand why they are rhe choice if snior citizens. Sizing down and going up to a wide width has been the game changer. I'm a very tall guy and my feet are very short and very wide which is strange. In a standard Nike i wear a 12 and in a wide New Balance im a 10.5. I'm done with the regular shoe store and will only be shopping wide from now on. Just gotta find something that looks age appropriate now lol.
best impact insoles..... Footprint Insoles. You Will Love them if you are hard on your feet! I took a crappy pair of walmart shoes and they let me run all the way home from work (2.5 miles) today alone.
Come on guys. That asics shoe is the gel Kayano. It's a stability shoe meant for overpronators. Right under the arch it'll say dynamic duomax. That's a wedge of foam that is denser than the rest of the shoe to control pronation.
Watch your videos daily...thanks for all you teach us. I have bad knees and don't walk right...feet hurt etc. Need some added advice on deciding if I have a normal or a high arch. I do know I have a narrow foot. Thanks guys!
I dont run, i have had several severe ankle sprains and have found out it mostly happens with shoes that have flared and thick chunky rubber on the heals. In The thinner more flexible soled shoes i am able to feel the divots or places on the ground i am stepping. In the chunky bottomed shoes i cant feel the ground, step in a divet, or crack in sidewalk and roll my ankles. However i have flat feet and plantar fasciitis and find the thinner shoes make my feet hurt. But id rather have sore feet than sprained ankles.
Excellent video! I’m a teacher and you explained clearly how to find adequate sneakers. You made a complicated subject simple to understand. Thank you!! It’s hard to find videos based on research and experience today. Everyone goes for the likes and flashy content. This is Highly informative much appreciated. Thanks again
I find that Asics and New Balance are the most comfortable. I have wide feet and usually train barefoot (in a martial arts studio). 😂But sometimes, I like to go for an extended walk of 40min or so around my neighborhood. I can’t wear Nike or Reebok.
The military and other studies have actually looked at this topic. Can you reduce injury based on getting a shoe that matches your arch? The answer I have always found is no, if you don’t believe me, go do a deep dive into Google Scholar and read up. The way to pick the right shoe is if it is comfortable to you. (studies show)
I’ve only recently started paying attention to the functionality of my shoes in terms of the type of feet I have. I’ve got really flat and wide feet which I forced into soft and tight shoes. Let’s just say they didn’t last long and it definitely affected my feet in the long run.
Just watched this, I'm wondering though, you didn't say exactly what to do for a super high arch. I have more foot pain with Asics, especially with each model change. Achilles and plantar fasciitis got worse. Please update with 2020 video, if possible. Thanks.
You need to try Hoka One One shoes and especially their recovery slides which have both changed my life. Wonderful arch support!! Used to buy many Asics Kayanos but the Hokas are so much better!!
You guys are wonderful!🥰🥰 you tell us more than everything we could ever want to know about our bones. I learned a lot from this video about purchasing daytime shoes, as well as running shoes. Thank you, thank you, thank you . ❤️❤️👏👏😘😘
I’ve been under the impression that arch support is bad for you because when you put something under the arch of your foot it makes it weak. The reason I bring this up is because when I started running 4 years ago I had the worst running form and I fell for that whole gimmick and these shoes do this or that then I came across and interview with Chris mcdougal and I went to the local track and I took my shoes off and ran only in my socks and that’s where I improved my stride and since then have found that zero drop shoes are the way to go
It also helps if brands gave a fr**k about the size of your foot. They don’t make shoes for my foot size. My podiatrist was like 😲 when I went in due to my recent occurrence of tendinitis. My dad asked if there was any companies that would give a darn, and the room is silence. For my past 24 years of life (still going), I’ve been forced to wear shoes that are incorrectly fit to my feet. My dad called Adidas and, They pretty much hung up on us. They said they don’t do “that”, any longer. We had a long conversation about that we didn’t want my name on a shirt or my shoes, and he for whatever stupid reason said that we wanted Jersey Customization. My dad asked “what are people like me(he said my son), supposed to do to get shoes?” The guy said “I cannot answer that”.
I have crazy high arches, and I love max cushion shoes even for fast days. It might be because of you what you said in the video. I also notice in the running world, there's generally some shoes everyone loves for daily training across the board. Hoka Clifton 6 and 7, Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit, and New Balance Rebel just to name a few. Everything is going to higher stack height, more cushion, but lighter shoes. I guess the infamous Nike Next% and Alphafly marathon shoes are the perfect example.
I do too, and I switched from a Nike Revolution to the React and the reason I liked the switch was because it feels more flexible. I wasn't ready for minimalist shoes, but I wanted something that would allow my foot to do its natural thing, and the Revolutions felt too stiff. Also, the Reacts are are really great for getting used to running more on the front and mid-foot because of the angle on the sole. It's been helping me run and power walk with better form. When I'm walking only or for casual walking, I use the other ones. I also started wearing toed socks with a snug fit and it's made a great difference.
Not mentioned but very important is where the shoe breaks when you bend it. It should not bend/break in the arch. Just like your foot, it should break forward of your arch.
Thank you for your videos. They have been extremely informative and appreciated! Based off of this video and your other videos related to this topic, I have medium arches. I just started running long distance and thought I was an underpronator, but it seems that my left foot pronates much more than my right. Is this possible that the two sides don't match in biomechanics? If so, hypothetically what would you recommend? Neutral shoes with arch support insoles or just get stability shoes? or arch exercises? Thank you for your help.
You need to go into a specialty shoe store, like Dave's Running Shop and have a trained professional person fit you with the right shoe for your foot shape and your walking /running style.
Hi guys, in general u post great material, many thanks, it's a pity u haven't discussed some other issues like e.g. 'drop' - possibly maybe debunking some misconceptions about it, all the best!
This was very helpful. Saturday I spent over an hour trying running and walking shoes and could not get comfortable. I think I have plantar fasciitis on the right side and need to see a podiatrist. I have wide feet with very high arches and narrow heals. For hiking I wear Keens and they are fine. Do you have video about orthotics?
Great info but you need to address the following: The different types and quality of inserted orthotics, how age and weight affects plantar facitiatis and the arch, how PF. Thanks
I am looking for a (running) shoe for standing all day (work). Are running shoes a good option and which general principles should I follow in making a choice? I liked the New Balance u showed in the video, which model are they? Thank you Ps I need a wide shoe accomodating for a slight overpronation
I just went for a fitting and was told I over pronate on one foot and I’m neutral on the other. That makes it difficult when finding shoes. The computer recommended a stability shoe for me.
You didn't mention the importance of choosing a shoe with a wide toe box to enable your toes to splay out properly as you run or walk. Most athletic shoes we've grown up with, unfortunately, are designed like dress shoes and are pointy at the toes, and they tend to have toe spring (toe end of the shoe points upwards, which leads to all sorts of problems with our feet down the road.

best impact insoles..... Footprint Insoles.
You Will Love them if you are hard on your feet!
I took a crappy pair of walmart shoes and they let me run all the way home from work (2.5 miles) today alone.
Altra makes zero drop shoes with a huge toe box. I have wide feet and love them.
Come on guys. That asics shoe is the gel Kayano. It's a stability shoe meant for overpronators. Right under the arch it'll say dynamic duomax. That's a wedge of foam that is denser than the rest of the shoe to control pronation.
wow mind blowing with all that info... it make a lot a sense and begin to understand with all the experience with my foot .
Watch your videos daily...thanks for all you teach us. I have bad knees and don't walk right...feet hurt etc. Need some added advice on deciding if I have a normal or a high arch. I do know I have a narrow foot. Thanks guys!
Trying to run in a motion control shoe, is like trying to run with your foot in a cement block. Causes Knee and hip pain.
I bing watch you all like crazy - great content! I llove how you have over 1million subscribers.
Guys you are the best not just in your opinions.....
Oh wow, I like these guys. I wish more UA-cam channels had TWO experts bantering and whatnot.
You are both knowledgeable and entertaining. Thank you.
Sock-a-knee named after the Saucony River behind the factory. I sold running shoes for 18 years. Grey midsoles are Polyurethane white is EVA.
I was thinking of buying running shoe.I found video just in time,
SKOL!!!! Very happy I just found your channel.
I find that Asics and New Balance are the most comfortable. I have wide feet and usually train barefoot (in a martial arts studio). 😂But sometimes, I like to go for an extended walk of 40min or so around my neighborhood. I can’t wear Nike or Reebok.
Thank you for sharing!! This will help others, we are sure!
You guys are coworker goals
What are your thoughts on catering to the flat feet issues with an insole rather than the shoe?
If the shoe is narrow for a flat feet how can you adjust it with an insole ? Please tell me.
The military and other studies have actually looked at this topic. Can you reduce injury based on getting a shoe that matches your arch? The answer I have always found is no, if you don’t believe me, go do a deep dive into Google Scholar and read up. The way to pick the right shoe is if it is comfortable to you. (studies show)
My Physio isn’t as amusing as Bob & Brad. I’ll have to refer them to him. :-)
I’ve only recently started paying attention to the functionality of my shoes in terms of the type of feet I have. I’ve got really flat and wide feet which I forced into soft and tight shoes. Let’s just say they didn’t last long and it definitely affected my feet in the long run.
I have the same problem, including weak ankles and knees! Did you find any running shoes that work for you?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I suffer from chroic compartment syndrome in both lower legs which i had to get a fasciotomy for bc of high pressures.
New Balance Beacons saved my feet. Worth the $119, which is a steal for the relief they’ve brought.
Try fore foot running after that you dont need to worry about shoes, Just by any shoes with good material.
The Siskel and Ebert of health and wellness. Much win.
The reason I bring this up is because when I started running 4 years ago I had the worst running form and I fell for that whole gimmick and these shoes do this or that then I came across and interview with Chris mcdougal and I went to the local track and I took my shoes off and ran only in my socks and that’s where I improved my stride and since then have found that zero drop shoes are the way to go
What does it mean if you have pain in the inside part of the arch?
GOOD INFORMATION I ENJOY YOU'RE VIDEOS KEEP MAKING THEM. 👍
My dad called Adidas and,
They pretty much hung up on us.
They said they don’t do “that”, any longer.
We had a long conversation about that we didn’t want my name on a shirt or my shoes, and he for whatever stupid reason said that we wanted Jersey Customization.
My dad asked “what are people like me(he said my son), supposed to do to get shoes?”
The guy said “I cannot answer that”.
Thanks a lot guys. Got my perfect pair of running shoes . Very informative.
I was very happy with ASICS tennis shoes when I ran 5K races
You need to go into a specialty shoe store, like Dave's Running Shop and have a trained professional person fit you with the right shoe for your foot shape and your walking /running style.
Wow, I really learned a lot from this video. Now I know how to find the correct shoe. Thank you both for the information.
Great info but you need to address the following:
The different types and quality of inserted orthotics, how age and weight affects plantar facitiatis and the arch, how PF. Thanks
We need Al Bundy
😂
I am looking for a (running) shoe for standing all day (work). Are running shoes a good option and which general principles should I follow in making a choice? I liked the New Balance u showed in the video, which model are they? Thank you
Ps I need a wide shoe accomodating for a slight overpronation
Thank bob and brad
i pronate and have high arches, which type of shoe should I use?
The entire point of this video was saying you need to go find the ones for you
Thank you so much Bob and Brad.💖
I just went for a fitting and was told I over pronate on one foot and I’m neutral on the other. That makes it difficult when finding shoes. The computer recommended a stability shoe for me.
thank you guys... next time i can choose the righty type for me as I am a neutral arch or supinator. or may be in the middle.
I agree. I need a wide toe box but want a light weight shoe. Suggestions?
@@kathybates508 Try Brooks, they have what you're looking for and they give you a generous free trial to return them if they don't work out for you.
