How to Install & Play Xbox Live Indie Games on Xbox 360 (JTAG/RGH)

- A bit of a forgotten gem on the Xbox 360, the long lost Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) selection once had a ton of indie choices available to digitally download on the console. These days the XBLIG service on Xbox 360 has been retired, however some people have wanted to revisit these games on their hardmodded JTAG/RGH consoles but have had no luck getting the games to boot. Thankfully there's only a couple of prerequisites to look out for, but once dialed in you should be ready to go with some indie goodness! This will cover the prerequisites, installation, and playing XBLIG titles on a hardmodded console!

A hard modded 360 is a real gem. Thanks for sharing this great guide on Xbox Live indie games. I always value seeing indie devs and their games getting some love.

I can't seem to get this to work, latest dashboard/kernal assuming i have the avatar update because it's not greyed out, and I put the folder in 00000000 but they still wont start
Dunno if it's something you would be interested making a video about but there is that annoying quirk of PAL x360 - most of the xbox classic games work at 50Hz, even if you use NTSC disc or dumped files and PAL system does not let you use VGA with Xbox classic games (sure a bit niche by now but I drowe me crazy back in the days when I used x360 with PC display or at some event with a projector).
The easy fix is to prepare the dashboard update with the region changed to NTSC-J then all Xbox Classic games work at propper 60Hz with VGA unlocked on euro spec 360

Wow thank you, I had the latest dash, the file structure correct.
All I needed to do was scan for title updates in the one menu and voila it finally worked.

Bro I've tried so much to get this to work. Every time I launch an indie game I get a pop saying ""In order to play this game you need to download and apply the available update..." with the only option being "OK" that takes me back to the stock dashboard. My avatar has color, so I'm assuming I got avatar data, followed this tut, title update inside Content>000...>584E07D2>game folder & title update folder. Disconnected from internet and even played around with turning on fakelive, etc. Restarted the console many times while trying different steps, different indie games, nothing makes it work... and the funny thing is that I got my modded console to play that exact game you showed, the "I made a game with zombies in it". Would love to hear any thoughts.
None of the options such as fakelive in Dashlaunch need to be modified.
@@MrMario2011 figured it out finally... all the files were in place, transferred them FTP but it wouldn't work for the life of me. Then I uploaded the files using 360 Content Manager (windows software), it uploaded them to exact same place, but somehow that fixed it.
Can't find anyway how to update box art / covers, even Aurora Asset Editor v1.3.3 not finding them, any help would be appreciated:)
Hello and thanks for your videos. By now those are so useful for me. I have a question. If I gonna use a external hdd for my jtag xbox 360 can I use 4tb? Or the maximum is 2tb?
I wanna use that for running games while its plugged into my xbox
Maximum is 2 TB unless you apply XL HDD or USB beta patches.

Something strange that happens is that the games work from the original board and even FS3 but when I start them from Aurora when a game asks me to press the start button it doesn't work. I'm not sure how to fix it because I can hardly find anyone with the same problem on the internet.
Super odd, I haven't heard of or run into that.
So the games have to be in the main hdd and cant be on a usb
im just making sure but dose it delete any avatars or is it that you just have to have avatar data?

Heyo! i love your videos but wanted to say thank you as again this has helped me out get some classic games setup for my nieces and nephews and i was able to get this done successfully for one of my rgh consoles but as for my other one... THIS only works on the xbox 360 dashboard dashboard... but not in aurora... so this is completely reversed for me..
What am i able to do from here??
As for my in aurora it attempts to load the game, launching via a button proceeds to say applying title updates then nothing happens after that.
ive already re downloaded the files and copied it from the flashdrive onto my console and even FTP it several times and nothing seems to get this working.
IM on latest TU firmware 17559 for the x360 and i already have the avatar data aswell... and even made NAND backups , any help or any clue or suggestions??
i have set in dash launch autofake and set it automatically to 584E07D2 for loading the indie games.
should i try using 360 content manager or 360 horizon or even trying to use x360 neighboard to copy the files over again and attempt to laod them?
im just so baffled.

FIXED! Thanks again Mr Mario for your awesome console tuts , i missed playing guitar hero 2 on a beast of a console.
for anyone else out their that has had a similair issue, with Aurora not loading Indie Game Titles, and regardless if it worked in dashlaunch or on the microsoft dashboard or NXE dashboard...heres my fix.
i had to research a video from over 10 years ago to find out that all i had needed to do was, to UNINSTALL the avatar system update and reinstall the update so what i did was, by going into the storage section on xbox 360 then , tapping the key combo LB, RB, X, then LB , RB, X again on my controller and a pop up asked me to uninstall the update. i went ahead and my avatars were grey again, they werent before, so i was hoping this would fix the issue.
Shortly after, i restarted my rgh trinity xbox 360,
(Assuming that maybe you also had the XNA Update and $$ytemUpdate on your flashdrive already prepared)
went ahead to plug in my fat32 usb, i also copied over the XNA update file to my internal HDD, went into aurora selected the file on my usb.... Usb0\Content\0000000000000000\584E07D2\000B0000\tu32000100_00000000
i then copied that , INTO MY INTERNAL HARDDRIVE, via aurora file browser highlighting Xbox360\System\HDD1\Content\0000000000000000\584E07D2\
and double checked to make sure that in that folder 584E07D2\000B0000\tu32000100_00000000 was present on the internal hdd after copying.
i restarted my rgh trinity xbox 360, left it on....
then i plugged in my FAT32 flashdrive into my pc.. i then copied over and loaded up the Avatar Update using Windows Explorer, on my computer, copied over the files into the root of the flashdrive
labeled it as $$ystemUpdate as its for the latest and last Dashboard 17559 for my kernel...
Then i went back to my RGH back into the xbox dashboard, plugged in my USB waited 1 minute and a popup was asking to say that an update was required! so i went ahead and VOILA! i was able to play indie games on Aurora now! and on the xbox dashboard.
NOW INdie Games work, XBLA, Original XBOX and 360 games are now working
for anyone else, goodluck out their as this is what helped me in my situation with 1 of my 2 rgh xbox 360, i hope this helps! and for any new titles dont forgot to use xm360 to rescan ANY games to unlock dlc or xbla titles after such a thing if aurora didnt detect the folder.
As thats whati had to do because my indie games were not in the same content folder and now they are in the same folder as the TU update

i will try this i have been struggling to get indie games working on modded consoles. i can get them working on non modded consoles via XBLA browse games but i have yet to get it working on modded consoles.

wow how I hate this new launcher.. dunno how and were I got it or if it still works for that matter but I had FSD3 installed with some mod adding extra features and restoring game cover downloading from the web. FSD is just so much more flexible with all the themes mimicking each of the default dashboards, I love a dark blades theme.
This method does not work with 4GB Corona or Trinity models. If you disassemble and remove the 4GB module and re-run the XBL Avatar update saving it to your HDD, Indie titles will work on Corona and Trinity. 16GB models don't have this problem.
Am i understanding correctly, you have to add each game through file manager on the xbox 1 by 1 ?
They can all be added in a batch since they go in the same TitleID folder for Indie Games.

This is the same kind of crash i get with original xbox games. Can you do a tuturial on how to rectify that on rgh/jtag consoles?
You probably need backwards compatibility files. I have a video on it.
@@MrMario2011 i followed the vid and used the hub compatibility files, i either get the original xbox logo or a black screen, i've even tried turning all the plugins off on dashlaunch. I don't know if this issue is common or not, but it happens on both of my rgh 360s
Im trying to play the XBLIG on PC, not the 360. I have the Files from my games but can't find any way to play them on PC
