The historical significance of this performance can not be overstated...their audience was composed of citizens of the Soviet Union (now the Russian Republic) at a time when the only way they could hear Western music was through the black market. This concert was a landmark achievement that, along with the destruction of the Berlin Wall, led to the dissolution of the oppressive Soviet regime. I am old enough to remember the threat that the Soviets represented at the time...I lived under it. It is something that today's generation can't conceive of, but it was real, and Metallica was a part of dismantling that threat, because they represented what true creative freedom could achieve.

You're right. Its the story of moses and Pharoah. Creeping death was the mist that came and killed all the first born children UNLESS you had the blood of a unblemished lamb painted above your doorway. Then the mist would "passover" your home if so.

If you listen to what the event organizers say, what the military says, and what the bands including Metallica that were there that day say it's less than 500k. It's a huge crowd but it's nowhere near a million people not even close. It's internet folklore. Take a look at a soccer stadium in Brazil that holds 70,000 people now tell me there's over 11 stadiums packed into that crowd. It's really not even close.

Cliff is my fav for his technical written music ability and what was layed down on albums. Jason my fav for energy, enthusiam, and backing vocals at the live shows. Each guy was the right bass payer for their respective times in the band. I appreciate Rob's ability to play the early Cliff stuff, and he's really why Orion got brought back into the setlists, and even though he's a distant third in my mind, he's been the right guy at the right time too during his stint with the band. None of his stuff on album really jumps out at me though. I liked him better in ST.

Live Metallica shows in the 80's and 90's were an absolute marathon. So much energy, 3 hour shows, no intermission, full speed ahead. Saw them sometime around 92, but in a small field house at the NDSU campus in Fargo, North Dakota. 4000 seats. They even commented during the show that it had been a very long time since they played a small venue and they were loving it. Every person in that show got every penny of their $25 ticket. I will never forget it. Saw them many times after that, but that show ranks #1 for sure.

No one could touch them during this run in the 90s. They were hands down the best live metal show and everyone else was trying to be second and they dominated for a good 15 years. I saw them live over 30 times in my life. Never got old.
I would give so much to go back to 1992 to 94 and see them on that tour again.

1991 was officially the year Metallica-mania ignited w/ the release of their self-titled 'black' album... 10 years after they formed in L.A, Metallica scored a #1 album and would be playing the biggest stages in the world... This being a free festival in Moscow, Russia w/ AC/DC headlining and Metallica playing the Soviet Union for the first time. They would go on to headline tours on that record from the Fall of '91 until the summer of '94... it included a run of stadium shows w/ Guns N' Roses... By the time the tour ended, the 'black' album had sold 9 million copies in the US alone and Nirvana had come & gone... thus, altering the scene forever in the 90's.
It was unfortunate that after Metallica took a year off, they returned in 1996 w/ the 'Load' album and sounded like every other rock band that was popular that year, and looked like average joes w/ short hair... They were still hugely popular, but their hardcore fan base was turned off by their transformation from a heavyweight metal band into a mainstream rock band & still calling themselves 'Metallica' 😂
Sadly, Metallica never recaptured this form between 1983 to 1993...

Nice. Creeping Death in my opinion is the iconic Metallica song. And not only did you finally get to it but you chose live in Moscow. The guy you didn't recognize is Jason Newsted who was the bassist from 1986-2001. Jason was the heart and soul of the band when he was in it. An absolute legend. His energy in the live shows is incredible. He left everything on the stage. Also just an all around great person. Jason's a beast.
    As for other Metallica songs.

Dunno if anyone's explained, but the song is about the plague that fell over Egypt in the Bible, killing the first born sons, thus 'Creeping Death'. The dude you don't recognize is their second bassist, Jason Newstead, who replaced Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tragic accident involving their tourbus. The drummer is Lars Ulrich, and he is indeed crazy on the drums.

This one brings back memories. I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in 86 back when Cliff Burton was still alive. And on the And Justice tour and Black Album. I saw MegaDeth kinda by accident even before Metallica like 85 or early 86 in a club concert I went to with a buncha bands playing. Dave Mustaine got up and played the Jump In the Fire riff off Kill 'Em All and I was like WTF? who is this dude and why is he playing Metallica's shit? LIttle did I know at the time that Dave fkn wrote a large percentage of the Metallica stuff from Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning. Times were different. No internet so info was instantly accessible. It took awhile to trickle. And musicians and actors were enegmatic. You didn't have em taking pics of their lunch and post to Instagram and be ordinary people & shit. They were like the gods of Olympus!

Atheist here, considering we are usually much better read in bible than Christians I thought I would add that the song pulls directly from the Book of Exodus much like their song The Four Horseman draws of the Book of Revelation. Creeping Death the first verse is about the Hebrew slaves being born to serve the Pharaoh, having faith the unknown one Moses would come to deliver them and the waiting of 400 years from when all this was prophesied. In the Book of Genesis, the claim is made that the Hebrews would be enslaved for 400 years. Chorus takes a line from the movie The Ten Commandments which is based on the Book of Exodus. It goes on to allude to Moses being the chosen one and addresses Exodus 12:12 when the angle of death strikes down every first-born son. I'm Creeping Death. Song continues with this theme touching on the burning bush, Nile turning blood red, plague, hail fire and brimstone. [Die die], By my hand [Die, die], I creep across the land [Die, die], Killing first-born man [Die, die], [die die] [die], By my hand Die, [die] I creep across the land Die, die, killing first-born man [Die, die, die]. He a loving god just the kind of person I would want to worship for eternity.

Whenever you get to reacting to bands from other countries that don't sing in English, there's a band from Japan called Maximum the Hormone.
