'Sad but true' was written in 1991 about addiction... James Hetfield saw addicts behave in a way that they wouldn't when they were sober... They were the same person, but acting like someone else when intoxicated... He also struggled w/ alcohol abuse his entire life... he would drink to excess and often get violent and destroy dressing rooms, go after women, etc... Metallica got the nickname 'Alcoholica' because they were reputed heavy drinkers in the 80's and 90's. Lars Ulrich (drums) recalled that drinking helped them cope w/ emotions that they couldn't handle sober... it got worse after their bassist Cliff Burton died in 1986... Their struggles would not come out in public for years. The other members of Metallica were no angels either... Jason Newsted (bass) was heavily into psychedelic drugs... lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich both used cocaine... Hammett was the first to end up in rehab. James would end up in rehab in 2001 when his drinking was destroying his family and relationships within Metallica. James did write lyrics about religious zealots... the beliefs that ended up costing his mother her life (James' mother refused cancer treatments because she was a Christian scientist who believed that 'prayers and God' would heal her... She died when he was a teen...) in songs like - 'The God that failed'... 'Holier than thou' ... James wrote about his mother's struggle w/ cancer in the song - 'Until it sleeps'... he wrote the song 'My friend of misery' about people's self-pity, pessimism and backwards belief... Other songs about addiction were - 'Master of puppets' ... 'The house Jack built' ... 'Moth into flame' (which was about singer Amy Winehouse and her downfall w/ addiction that led to her death)
"James Hetfield got the idea for this song from the 1978 Anthony Hopkins film Magic, which is about a ventriloquist who is controlled by his evil puppet."

Spot on. God is a coping mechanism for people that have trouble coming to terms with the reality of life and death. But you don't need god to teach you right from wrong. You need a secure upbringing. Sometimes this happens to come along with something religious but it's definitely not necessary. Also, I love this Metalica track !

All-time great album. This riff is hard af and they put special attention to the tempo making it slightly slower than they naturally wanted to go at first. Love your reactions, man. Leper Messiah is a great Metallica song that deserves some love, especially given your introduction to this video.
My personal interpretation of it is the struggle within. That voice in the back of your mind saying, "youre not good enough, youre gonna fail" and towards the end its the same voice saying "told ya so, but this voice will always be there no matter what" I struggle with confidence issues, i have that voice in my head all day, everyday. The rage of the song conveys the frustration
It does not need interpretation. James wrote this about his mother's blind faith in God whilst she was ill and was praying for healing from God which never came and then she died.
Welcome to reggae. I too like dancehall probably a different era as I like the early 80s dancehall. Really all reggae. Good thing is there is no limit to the kinds of music we can enjoy.
As an atheist who has been on death's door both back when I was a christian, and later after I walked away from religion, I've found it's the opposite. Religious people who are dying are not at peace. They're worried about whether or not they did enough to please their god and what their afterlife is going to be. After de-converting, my near death experiences where much less stressful. It is what it is.
I agree 100%. No one seems to be more terrified of death than Christians. AS an atheist, I don't worry about any afterlife because I don't seen any good reason to believe it exists. Nothing is more calming and reassuring than the notion that when I die, I'm done.
As a Christian I disagree, but it really doesn't matter what I think, or what you think. Different people need different things, different people react differently to different things. It's all good.

I've crossed many paths, religion being one of them. God being another, both are different, but mainstream society dictates that they're one in the same. I disagree, religion is what one hides behind when faced with the fear and wrath of GOD because of the wrongs a person does... God is the one accepting what one has done, that one being thyself,. When a person can't accept the things one has done, and begins to fear the Gods wrath and judgement, then one turns to religion to find someone or something where they feel accepted and forgiven. Every religious person believes God made us in his image, and we are not to harm or judge others, you know, the ten commandments and all that, but it's what we do everyday to each other, I'm not saying everyone, but the minority in this instance are the ones who are true to themselves and the ones they love, use God if you want, heck, go ahead and use religion if you must,....I'm not following anyone, and I'm not asking you to follow any mantra, nor am I trying to lead, I'm no Noah. I was raised to believe in god, got smart and rejected it, then lived a lot of life and realized "god" isn't some guy up in the sky with a beard, it's simply a concept of "good", just as the "devil" is a concept of evil. If you've ever been to a truly great concert, the kind that makes you feel so good just sharing it with the people around you, it's almost as if you're in a church, and in a way, you are.

Woah... You can absolutely teach morality without the concept of gods or threatening eternal hellfire. In fact it might be counterproductive in this day and age because it's obviously BS. I don't think using a lie to teach morality is, well.. moral.

In the preamble discussion about God, it reminded me of a song that you should hear. "Quicksand Jesus" by Skid Row. The title refers to a belief in God that arises naturally in times of strife, like sinking in quicksand, when the concept of Him offers comfort. When you have to face that moment faith or non belief.
Black coffee is a good comparison. It's strong, and it's bitter, and it wakes you up whether you like it or not. That's Metallica. Lots of metal is like that. You don't have to like it or listen to it all the time, but every once in a while you need something to light a fire under your a$$ and get you moving.
I am an atheist who is at peace. I love life and when that day comes it will be fine. Love what life you have and don’t torture yourself about the end of life.
this song was actually left out during their recording of "And Justice For All". Like you said, as you get older, taste changes. That's the same with the band
I'm an Atheist but did go through Catholic school. I feel no matter what may be true, we all have to wake up and live life. Why not just try to be a good person. Great review as always!
God, Santa Claus, Neptune, the Easter Bunny - all a bunch of fiction. The universe however - is epic and more awe inspiring than anything else I can conceive of. All IMO .....
I really like and appreciate your view. My problem with religion is people who belong often believe their mere participation in that group gives them moral high ground. Yet, their drive to be good people is based on fear of hell while agnostics or atheists choose to be good people yet are demonized by religious people for having no morality.
God is an form of your mind to pretend you don't need to search for an answer to certain things, because there would be someone onipotent responsible for the difficult things to think about. So, obviously, people who believe in it would be more at peace because they would feel less anxiety, but they would also be more inclined to ignorance, and feel subconsciously guilty for ignoring these difficult aspects of life.
it's about your bad choices and in particular someone who blames others for their mistakes and bad behaviour near the end of their life and the song realizing that it was all them the whole time.
That's a false premise. Assuming people who don't believe in God are people who are fearful when they die just isn't true. There are plenty of full-on atheists who are at total peace with death (Pen Jillet for example). I could argue that believing there is nothing after death is more comforting because you don't have to worry whether or not you lived your life in such a way that merits reward in the afterlife. And everyone who is religious should worry if the God they worship is the one that is waiting to judge them after death. There are a lot of religions out there and everyone who believes in one thinks there's is the right one. When, in fact, the religion you believe in is most likely determined by when and where you were born. I'm agnostic personally and I'm not worried.
I have to disagree with one thing my friend , I don’t consider this album as early considering that this is their 5th album produced… However I will say that this album was the last album before they sold out to mainstream music culture…
I said it once on MrLboyds chanel and i will say it again. Weather or not you like this music guitar solos captivate us. We the procede to make guitar solo face wich happen around 10:30 in this video.😂. One loveband one appreciation to music and the heart that goes into it
To me it’s a bit scary to start believing in something like a God. The more I understand science the more peaceful I get as I evolve as human. Death is just a part of this life and you won’t feel being dead
Instantly subscribed as you spoke your opinion on god and this country. As a non religious person, I’m unsure about god as a whole but he Judea-Christian values that our country was founded on is what I try to live by and brings me so much more purpose and peace in my life.
Metallica is known to tell their fans that the songs are written for your own interpretation. James (singer/song writer) wants the songs to be your own thoughts that make up the meaning to the songs.
I appreciate Polo’s perspective on religion. I was once there and with age and wisdom came to realize God is love. Jesus is our savior. Forget the corruption of organized religion. That’s man, not God.
As always it's really interesting to listen to your music travelling notes. I was just wondering about what you said about America coming further away from God and the clip you showed at 2:50. What was the meaning of the video?

Love the reaction in the intro! 👍🏼
DYERS EVE! You will love this Powerful song 🤘🔥🎙️🎸🥁
I really like and appreciate your view. My problem with religion is people who belong often believe their mere participation in that group gives them moral high ground. Yet, their drive to be good people is based on fear of hell while agnostics or atheists choose to be good people yet are demonized by religious people for having no morality.
I appreciate you man.
If you want a song from Metallica on how money buys God, try ‘Leper Messiah’
My favourite song from ‘Master Of Puppets’
God is an form of your mind to pretend you don't need to search for an answer to certain things, because there would be someone onipotent responsible for the difficult things to think about. So, obviously, people who believe in it would be more at peace because they would feel less anxiety, but they would also be more inclined to ignorance, and feel subconsciously guilty for ignoring these difficult aspects of life.
it's about your bad choices and in particular someone who blames others for their mistakes and bad behaviour near the end of their life and the song realizing that it was all them the whole time.
This is as good as drums have ever sounded. This is the pinnacle. That gunshot sounding snare is just piercing! Back when Lars had taste galore :)
A gun being cocked.....watch the making of the Black album
One of my favorite Metallica songs. It's so fun to listen to.
I have to disagree with one thing my friend , I don’t consider this album as early considering that this is their 5th album produced…
However I will say that this album was the last album before they sold out to mainstream music culture…
I said it once on MrLboyds chanel and i will say it again. Weather or not you like this music guitar solos captivate us. We the procede to make guitar solo face wich happen around 10:30 in this video.😂. One loveband one appreciation to music and the heart that goes into it
To answer your question you prefaced the video with, look up 'Pascal's Wager'.
Good stuff POLO, thanks👍
Please listen to “Zan, Zendegi, Azari” means “woman, life, freedom” sang by Sherwin…
This song got a special Grammy presented by First Lady…
Right on. You gotta be careful.
This song teaches you...
Amen Brother!!!
“ If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother that person is a piece of shit”
- Rust Cohle
Metallica is known to tell their fans that the songs are written for your own interpretation. James (singer/song writer) wants the songs to be your own thoughts that make up the meaning to the songs.
Come inside, open your eyes; I'm you!
Well said
Tovia Singer…large UA-cam presence….explore. Love what you do.
That was here in San Diego ca…
Loving your Metallica journey Polo 👍
I appreciate Polo’s perspective on religion. I was once there and with age and wisdom came to realize God is love. Jesus is our savior. Forget the corruption of organized religion. That’s man, not God.
As always it's really interesting to listen to your music travelling notes.
I was just wondering about what you said about America coming further away from God and the clip you showed at 2:50. What was the meaning of the video?
