Very true. I've been playing for over 20 years and I can't write a decent song to save my life. I can write intense groovy ballsy riffs, I can write lyrics, but depend on me to fuse those two with a melody and lyrical rhythmic pattern than can even somewhat work and you're shit out of luck.
I've written a few diddies, incomplete songs, short ideas, but nothing really complete and satisfying. I've just never had a knack for it. It really sucks because I'd love to be able to do more than just play other people's music

Metallica shook us because they weren't just fast and loud, they were precise. They sounded sharp, and they told interesting stories from unique perspectives. The first 4 albums are special because they were OURS. They weren't on the radio, we didn't have internet, it was word of mouth, it was organic. They were genuinely talented musicians that didn't show fear or shame, it was an amazing era.

I was at donnington 95 when they headlined. When they came on stage i was 20ft from front row center stage. 1min later, i was about 100ft off center and my feet did not touch the ground because 100,000 people behind had surged, crushed everyone and lifting us off our feet so we just flowed. That was just the start of their set after 10hrs of similar bands. I was exhausted at the end, barely able to stand. I just made it back to my tent, downed southern comfort and woke up a 6am bouncing when an airliner flew over the tent at about 100ft. The next evening i nearly got booted out a pub because was still so hyper.

15:43 Ryan said “when it’s song came out, it probably took the world by storm”
The reality is that Metallica couldn’t get any air play on the radio at this time. They were way to hard for even the hard rock stations in 1984. Their commercial success came way later. The only radio they had at the time was a handful of college stations.
It was the fans passing around their records and tapes, and showing up for the shows that kept them going.
