liked and subscribed. thanks for doing this one. it was metallica's first video. they were always against the process until releasing this. it's amazing the following they got with zero radio play and no videos.
this song was from their fourth album, and it was absolutely huge when it premiered on MTV. this was at a time when metal didn't get much play on MTV. it really paved the way for more metal bands to get their songs played, and for more people to hear it.

Juiliard music school helped but let's be honest that without social media distractions people had more time to utilize their natural talent.
If they lived today I fear they'd be too busy calling people "nootzies" on tiktok and Twitter for failing to be left of Lenin to ever create beauty musical or otherwise and they sure as hell wouldn't know war is bad... War is just what you do to wrong thinkers apparently or so I was told...
I mean isn't beauty and meaning considered too modern and thus repugnant for today and uncool to the kids who will be voting in a year or two?
I say this because of the music my nieces asked for for Christmas but my God, I truly fear that musical genius of any import is now dead.
Hooray for propaganda killing it wherever it rears it pristine and immaculate head 😞
      And if I seem bitter...
Then you should have to listen to your nieces music for a dozen hours too.
This isn't the same old "it was better in our day" trope... this was diametrically opposed to anything good anywhere, everywhere at all times to everyone
I may just buy them Metallica "and justice for all" to spite them.
If my sister won't set them straight then I will!!!!

Yo POLO, This was the first Metallica song that enjoyed a "tiny" bit of commercial success and airplay. This song was the first "heavy" metal song performed live at the Grammys. I was 12 or 13 at the time and already aware of what the PMRC was trying to do to hard rock and rap, because of this I got the feeling you get when you watch an underdog win the big game. I was so happy for the culture in general. The cutaways are indeed from a movie called JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN. The movie was based of the book by the same name. The storyline of the song is the storyline told in the book and movie. Fun Fact: The movie became much more well known, developing the status of a "cult" film classic. Metallica eventually bought the film rights in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees. Cheers POLO.

I saw them live several times in the early 90’s. When they perform ONE it is intense. It’s like you are in the middle of a combat zone. The bass rattles you to your core. 30 years of listening to them & this song still sends chills down my spine. The line you couldn’t make out is Hetfield singing, “hold my breath as I wish for death.” The reason they are so appealing is their lyrics tell stories while their instruments convey raw emotion. You’ll find many of us that listen to metal also love rap. Another genre of story telling.

Hello there. I rarely post, but watching this great reaction video to one of the greatest songs ever written brought an avalanche of memories and thoughts…So, hello from Eastern Europe! I’m 51. I grew up with Metallica, which was forbidden in my county during the communist regime. The depth of Metallica’s songs against war, manipulation of “puppets”, fight against the societies who kills our dreams. The rage, the anger in James’s voice and the humanity in Metallica lyrics was life changing for us and formed the culture and values of my generation, on the other side of the “iron curtain “. So, my emotional and chaotic thought’s after watching your video are:
    1. Metallica is (for me) the greatest metal band ever and very important part of my life.
    2. Real art is actual anywhere and anytime. F.e. “One” is like made for the war in Ukraine… but valid for any war, past or future.
    3. Good music / art unites people. Race, religion, politics and nationality divide us. Just remembered Metallica in Moscow 1991, 1.8 million Russians went crazy! Take a look…ua-cam.com/video/_W7wqQwa-TU/v-deo.html
    3. The fact that we’ve discussing In 2023 a song released in 1988 with the same passion is a true measurement for its value
    4. Thera are at least 10 Metallica songs which, I think should be studied in music classes as “classical music
    5. The positions in their lyrics probably guided (morally) millions of people people from my generation all over the world.
    5. There’s no excuse for any war. “For a hill men would kill…why - they do not know “
    6. M is the greatest metal band, and this here is a great reaction video and nice words and emotions shared
    6. 🤘 greetings from the Bulgarian Metallica fans.

"Hold my breath as I wish for death, oh please God help me!" is the line you're trying to understand.
The movie used, which this song was inspired by, is "Johnny Got His Gun".
This song was actually Metallica's first foray into making music videos. A pretty interesting way to get into making videos. However, it makes you wonder what kind of videos would have been made for songs like "Master of Puppets" or "Creeping Death".
I love the line the priest has, "He's the product of your profession, not mine."

      @Johnnygyro 8 місяців тому

You seem to be the only one mentioning the movie so I'm piggybacking off you. The movie is based off of the book "Johnny Got His Gun" by blacklisted author Dalton Trumbo. He wrote both the original book and the screenplay (the movie was also his directorial debut).
The book has some really interesting parts they never get to in the film. He feels the passage of time by the changes of temperature according to the seasons. He decides at some point to just begin counting the seconds, minutes and hours to pass the time. There's also a part where a nurse gives him a handjob.
His SOS speech at the end is quite different. If I remember correctly, he tells the doctors/military brass (by banging his head repeatedly against the bedframe) that he should be displayed on tour around the world as a warning to humanity of the effects of war. He's told that's not possible (via taps on his forehead). That's when he says "Kill me" over and over again.
What's also interesting is that Trumbo wrote this book as an anti-war pacifist after WWI. But when WWII came around, Trumbo did a 180 and disregarded his work, saying that we needed to get into WWII to combat the evils of Hitler's Nazi Germany.

The song is based in Dalton's Trumbo book "Johnny got his gun". Trumbo also directed the movie, witch is shown in Metallica's video. When i was 16 i bought the book because of the song and man i was crying like a baby
