1991 in Russia was a special time. This particular show named “Monsters of Rock” took place in USSR that has been completely dissolved later, the same year. First and last metal festival of that scale in USSR. One of the main cultural events that had shaped the following decade. I was born in 1989 in Russia (and still living here) and 90’s were a tough period for the people here. I don’t remember first five years of the decade well personally but the echo of that time period still affects us. People in USSR of the Iron Curtain period (that officially ended in 1993) haven’t had an experience with such things. There was a cultural blockade and after 1993 there was an explosion: people realized that there is a lot of things they can do. 90’s were the time of business tightly bonded with organized crime like mafia in US. And people in Russia were obsessed by the “American Dream”. It all started in the late 80’s and was the time of the denial of soviet legacy. And this metal festival was a revolution in Russian musical traditions brought straight from the USA. A part of the same “American Dream”. It was like “that’s what they listen to in America”. Very significant and truly historical event. I’ve simplified some things here a little: there was metal in Russia already. Rock music and heavy metal weren’t a completely alien phenomenon. There were bands playing metal but it was the first event of this scale featuring very popular bands from abroad. Almost all the people you’ve seen there had their first metal concert ever. Just imagine. It was like a breath of fresh air for the first time in their life after years of isolation in the stuffy place. I don’t say that everything before was bad. I’m saying how people felt there. Now we have a lot of metal shows and festivals featuring bands from abroad, Metallica including. It seems like common stuff now but it all has started there, in 1991 in Moscow on the Tushino aerodrome where 1.6 million people almost literally touched the real metal music for the first time.

Agreed, different but not better. I think Jason had a more entertaining stage presence and made a great secondary front man to take over some vocal and banter responsibilities. At least the American leg of this tour, there was no opening act, so it was like 3 hours straight of Metallica. They had to keep that energy up all night. It worked, in part, because they had James and Jason on a tag team to engage the crowd.

Saw Metallica in 1989 during the Justice tour. They played this song later in the first set. Wasn't a huge place, but it was crowded. Few days later rumor spread that several security guards "stepped" into the lobby area near the doors during our "DIE" chant.

I don't know if anybody mentioned it but this song was written when Cliff Burton who was their first Bassist who was killed in a freak bus accident. When the Green fog comes into Egypt to kill the first born is why they say Die, Die, Die, so understand they are not just screaming that just to be screaming it, LOL.
Creeping Death is the greatest song written about the story of Passover. 1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.
The "DIE" chant is actually a part of the song. Talking about the Angel of Death that goes around killing all male born babies (from the Bible) unless you put lambs blood above your door.

I was at Woodstock 94 along with about 400,000 other crazy Metallica fans. I thought that was nuts but this man what an experience that must have been.🤘
Even The Mighty Het needs help from time to time, get well soon Jaymz Hetfield
Yo man I was born in 80 too. The first time I heard Metallica I was 12 and in my older brothers car with his friends. It just sounded like loud noise to me at 12 years old lol But at 14 or 15 I couldn't get enough of Metallica. They became my favorite band for a long time. I've seen them about 10 times in concert so far.
There is nothing that could stop that crowd and the crazy in it!
I WAS 11 IN 91 ALSO. HAPPY 40TH BOSS. METALLICA FOR LIFE SIR.
Dammit, man. I forgot how _amazing_ that performance was.
The final show from the 1991 Monsters of Rock European tour. Crowd estimates range from 800,000 to 1.5 million. This was in the dying days of the Soviet Union, just a couple of months before it was dissolved. Apparently Mikhail Gorbachev himself gave approval for the concert. Note that Metallica weren't even the headliners, AC/DC was.
It don't get any better than that. 😮😮
You know what they say about Jason, but he's probably the best on stage performance man they ever had, this guy really makes me rock my fucking brains out, miss him in Metallica...
I have been listening to Metallica since 1985 and I still love them.............die die die die by my hand..........yeah
You know y'all just here for the "Die, die, die" part.
Been in Budapest 22.8.1991. MONSTERS OF ROCK
The best live band ever bro. Period. It is two hours of non stop energy. Metallica could solve our obesity problem. Just go to one of their concerts. You'll workout and enjoy it!!!
Can never ever....ever beat that Moscow 1991 crowd....hell no more.
There's one Metallica Live Performance that I'm certain that you'll be blown away by the Performance and the fact that its the Bass Guitar and not a regular Guitar playing. That Performance was the Metallica's "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" Live from Chicago 1983 🤘😎🤘 🤘🤑🤘 🤘😎🤘 Please do a Reaction Video to Metallica's "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" Live from Chicago 1983 😎
Something about this many people chanting die just gives me the gnarliest goosebumps.
Kirk Hamet wrote this song and thrashed those cords. My favorite band in high school, never be another time like that
That was 3 hours live non stop typical tallica concert best i ever seen back in 94 I think they played in Melbourne Vic Australia
Only metallica can turn the story of Moses and the 10 commandments into this
I don't know if anybody mentioned it but this song was written when Cliff Burton who was their first Bassist who was killed in a freak bus accident. He wrote it when he watching the Charlton Heston Ten Commandments movie.
Would love to see you react to the official video for Kaitangata by Alien Weaponry the video gives more context to the story being told unless for some unlikely reason you're fluent in Te reo Maori which they're singing in (which is the indigenous language of New Zealand)
The good old days when we had metal. Slaaaves!
Epic show, hope I get a chance to see them live.
This song is 35 years old. It was on the album' Ride the Lightning ' I bought the cassette back in 84.
"Back to the future" released next year! What an amazing years!!!
RTL and AJFA are my favorite albums by them.
RTL was one of the very first cassettes I ever purchased and AJFA was the first cd I ever purchased.
Favorite Metallica song.
Favorite Metallica song done live.
Favorite version of this particular song live.
I was at the big 4 at palmsprings they opened with this song it was insane so sick
Love your shirts you wear and your reactions!!!
I've watched this video a million times
first saw metallica (with cliff burton!) in 1985 at cain's ballroom. there wasn't anywhere near a big crowd like this but i felt there someday would be...................
Knew you'd like this- the energy is unbelievable at this show
RIP Cliff.
Somebody that knows. I still cannot believe how Cliff wrote this song in one night watching the Ten Commandments movie.
It was so loud they could literally feel the air pressure on stage that was created by the cheers of the crowd.
Domination by Pantera at this same show. Best guitar solo ever!
my metallica hymn. may james be strong.
You know...its said that even to this day, people are still leaving that show.
Metallica here is beyond beastly, this is what I would blast out to an alien civilization after something classical. Just to say, hey...you got this on your planet?
Seeing someone new fall in love with Metallica makes me
1. Jealous
2. Super happy
Super Happy

Loving the fact that you have as open of a mind as you do for music. Music will bring us together my friend. Thanks for posting this. And I was 24 when this came out. Long hair and everything back in the day. lol
the Pantera video you played "primal concrete sledge "was at the same show and the Ramones put on a killer show that day too!!!
Thanks for doing this one and great reaction! Harvester of Sorrow next, same show ;)
If you haven’t already seen it the Metallica Through the Never feature film is a great watch, awesome to see how their sound has evolved. Constantly improving.
That is Jason Newsted on bass. The cold part you are referring to. And Kirk is a beast too!
This is one of those song's that makes people want to learn how to play guitar. They make it look easy.
