Anyone else here a cheap date? Just give me a potato and a book and I'm good. To Fry Sliced Potatoes (The Virginia House-Wife, 1824, Virginia) Potatoes Lard, for frying Salt to taste Peel your potatoes. Slice into thin disks about a quarter of an inch thick OR peel into thin shavings. On medium heat bring a pot of lard to temperature. Fry until golden and crispy, or around 10 minutes. Using a strainer, dump onto a cloth to soak up any excess grease. Sprinkle with salt. *The original reciept instructs us to peel the potatoes...but I find that to be a waste so I stubbornly ignored it. Peel away if you wish.
Your husband is certainly a great talent behind the camera! You, young woman, are a great talent in front of said camera! Your expressions, gestures and comedic skills without saying a word are indeed priceless. Love all you both do! Such a powerful team.
I guess but for me reading a book is hard due to dyslexia so I’d probably look at the stars or draw while eating the chips if I was living in the 1860s
Oh yuck! I grew up with a mother who absolutely seared onto my brain my hatred of fried eggs!! She fried them in lard and if that doesn't kill the desire to eat fried eggs, nothing will! The only time that I ever have lard in my house is to make soap😊
our ancestors were raised on lard, butter, tallow, etc Whole Foods, not processed……they didn’t have clogged Arteries….the clogged arteries you are referring too, today it’s inflammation from all the seed oils ( not natural) that is causing inflammation…….you’ve been duped by a medical system that has been wrong for decades…….

Her name is Justine and his name is Ron. They are newlyweds and quite adorable. He is busily building a new home for her with his own 2 hands. They are both quite lucky to have found one another. I agree, these videos bring me a lot of peace and enjoyment as well 😀
I have to try making these for my husband. I have a Dutch Oven that might work well for this, don't you think? I have yet to make your ketchup, it looked quite spicy. Oh, by the way, I grew up in Appalachian Virginia.
My cat always gets stuck on the roof. One time my mom got mad and told him to get himself down. Then, we had an ice storm and had to beg my dad to get the cat off the roof.😂
I definitely like the second revipe better which you seem to as well. I want to try these from home. I wonder if lard is available in the grocery store. Love your show and cat!
That’s the most healthiest way to fry potatoes chips or fries in lard or tallow the way they used to fry them,,,,,,today in fast food places they use seed oils….yuk……I make my fries in an air fryer also delicious……..I luv Mish Mish,,,,,,,what a cute character kitty she is 🐈⬛
You have picked one of my favorite foods to cook potato chips!! Today I bake my cut up potatoes on a cookie sheet on high heat!! Almost as good! I could eat your chips twice a day forever-I’m addicted to chips 💖💖💖
This video is a gem! The combination of history and cooking is perfect, and the crispy chips look so delicious. I can almost taste them through the screen! Can't wait for more historical recipes!
So, to start with love the void cat. Also, I love your hard work and the truth about what you do. We live in a 1793 plantation house... can only imagine this was made here. Keep up the good videos! Love from Virginia!
"beast! You torment me!" 😂 Cats all day everyday! LOL. Love your videos! You live my dream life! I am excited for you!! 😄 Thanks for sharing with us! ❤
There's nothing to not love about fried potatoes...in any form. Add in MishMish on the roof, and today was a perfect video. Because it also brought back so many warm and wonderful memories of when my husband used to do Revolutionary War reenactments. The ladies and I used to fry many potatoes in lard, the thicker version, only we always rinsed and dried the slices first. Thank you, Justine! 🥰
Another great historic cooking receipt. I would like to request, if possible, to see a video on Paw Paws and paw paw reciepts. My small town has a paw paw festival in early September and I am curious about paw paws in the 1820s. Thanks and much love from just north of Vincennes, In.
Excellent recipes, Justine! I cannot believe this is the last Fall in the cabin. It looks so homey and I know you must be so excited to set up house in your new home. Be blessed... Going to the C & C! xoxo
The salt bae had me rolling! XDDDD Also... your cat is just hilarious!!! XD Watching you going inside, after you tried to retrieve MishMish from its misery XDDD Like...hey... what ya doing!? I'm here! And then just running like a leopard to the other side of the roof XD Too hilarious! And yes... a good potatoe will always be in my heart! And a nice book paired with it is just heaven :)
Yummy. Scooch over, I’m coming over for chips and book club 😂 Radish is a wonderful substitute for anyone who is low carb. I grow both potatoes and radishes but the radishes are ready quickly and in abundance so I use them interchangeably with potatoes for many dishes.
Yes potatoes are some of my favorite food."And you made them look even better".(Thank you my friend, have a great and lovely day,see you another time my dear).🙏♥️♥️👋
Still remember a camping trip in Yosemite Valley when my mom made a hash of chopped bacon, clams, onions and potatoes over a wood fire. After a long day of hiking and swimming, it smelled and tasted heavenly... those chips look so good!
I need to research the local ordinances about having an outdoor "cooking fire" on my property! I might not own sufficient land, but I wanted indoor plumbing and didn't want to spend 2+ hours per day just to get to and from my job.
Me and my wife like potatoes ships. We would like to try them this way.We have learned something new.Mish Mish always crack's us up.Rebecca and David Back.
I think your outfit is divine. Red look incredible on you. FYI Sliced fried potatoes with a fried or poached egg on top. That and a good book. My favourite Sunday breakfast. This Sunday I will try the second way. Yummy.!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers from the pacific northwest. Canada side.
Oh the Mishy😅 always making me laugh, such a character ❤ Justine you're looking lovely in that color. The chips look crispy salty and amazing, good job😊 love from Cape Cod Massachusetts
My love for potato chips is only second to my love for my children... I have to try this right away. Although not healthy per se, much healthier than my beloved Lays Curvy...
At the urgent care vet clinic, waiting for my cat to get seen. My husband asks me what I’m watching, “I’m watching how to fry potatoes chips from 1800s” he says “I love you!” 🥰 lol I love your channel!
Justine, a little tip with that blow torch. I cooked with a wood cookstove for 15 years so always had my torch handy. Doing enacting of 1860's and 1790's, lost of open fires as well. When inhaling, do it thru your nose to avoid getting dizzy/hyperventilating. Then blow out thru your mouth. In through your nose, out through the mouth. Repeat...😌

Definitely a tasty dish of chips. It's all you need, potatoes and salt. I like to dip mine in sour cream once in a while or just have them plain.
The salt Bae move though😂
Mish mish is very relax. Sweet kitty. Love your dress
Great video ha ha ha I think the cat knows how to climb the tree to get on the house and the chips look good I hope you have the kitty 🐈⬛ a chip 😂😊
Potatoes fried in lard is healthier than using seed oils. Yum!
