    Thank you for this. I wish you had mentioned that sleep apnea can also cause obesity. When I was diagnosed one of the things that was explained to me was that exhaustion impacts hormones that affect metabolism. I have severe sleep apnea and unfortunately went undiagnosed for many years to the point where I couldn't work and fell asleep everywhere I went. My ENT doctor, sleep apnea specialist, told me my metabolism may or may not bounce back, and if it did, it may take years. I participated in a study at Toronto General Hospital and have seen a dietitian over the years. I'm very pleased to report that with no change in diet (I always ate properly) and no additional exercise I've lost over 80 lbs in 6 years slowly and steadily. The weight loss didn't start until about 2 years after my diagnosis and adjustment to my cpap. I was angry and afraid when I was diagnosed. Now I can't live without my cpap and wouldn't want to.😊

      @@susanb.4965 They are, as long as you're diagnosed with severe enough sleep apnea to merit a machine. (Which is pretty much anything beyond mild apnea.)

    Important topic here, thank you. I'm one of those people who had sleep apnea for years without realizing. I'm in my mid-30s and for most of my adult life I've had low energy/motivation. Depression meds didn't help. Leading up to my disgnosis my cognitive decline had gotten so bad I worried i had a brain tumor or early onset dementia. When they tested my sleep it turned out I stopped breathing and woke myself up ONCE EVERY MINUTE. Absolutely wild. It has taken me over a year to find an effective cpap solution, and I'm still working on it, but even with a semi-functional setup my cognitive function has noticeably improved.
    Although obesity is the primary cause of sleep apnea, my theory is that it's a negative feedback loop as well. You sleep poorly because obstructed airways, then you eat more snacks because you have low energy and always feel like you need a pick-me-up to get through your work, your chores, and even your hobbies. Get heavier, apnea gets worse, eat more. This is what's happened to me and I'm in a real mess now. It sounds so trite but take care of yourselves, people. Health problems just compound so quickly and subtly and you can get overwhelmed before you know it.

    I had sleep apnea and had a sleep study done. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed and the Dr also took part of my uvula. It fixed my issue and I sleep well now.

      @@goldenhardt750 it wasn't bad. Mostly soreness from the tonsils being removed. A few weeks later I was fine. I was very careful and ate soft foods longer than recommended.

    I’m 24 and 5 3” and 120 pounds and have sleep apnea. If you’re tired or think that somethings not right get a sleep study done I’m so glad I did the difference when I use my CPAP machine versus when I don’t is night and day

      I wish I could push LIKE several times on your post. I wish I had been diagnosed at your age. Being exhausted for years did a lot of damage to my body in a variety of ways. Also, some people don't believe you can still be tired if you've supposedly slept a certain number of hours. Sometimes "lazy" is not lazy, but actually just exhausted. I know you didn't mention that but that was an image I've had a hard time shaking. Good for you for advocating for your health!

      Yes! I was a normal weight woman in my 30s when I was diagnosed. Wish I got diagnosed earlier but doctors kept dismissing my exhaustion as “just life” or depression.

    It took about a year of CPAP use before I saw maximum benefits but I did see them and always use my machine. It’s worth it.

    High carbon dioxide levels in your bedroom from inadequate ventilation can cause a lot of sleep disturbance. I had chronic high blood pressure and waking up gasping, until I got a CO2 meter. It convinced my partner to allow more ventilation of the house. He'd close everything up tightly after I went to bed, to keep more heat in. I'd rather have a cool house (and warm bedding) and be able to breathe freely. He didn't believe the air being "stuffy" had any health effects. Now he admits he wakes up easier and has greater mental alertness throughout the day.

      Omg in my country it’s illegal to NOT have a co2 meter in your house on every floor! So important for safety as it’s a silent killer, glad you have one now!!!

    One of our cats started laying on my chest at night and patting my face when I stopped breathing. My husband has already been diagnosed, so it was easier for me to go in. Always go in for a test if you think you might have it!!

    Long time I have had the symptom like a high heart rate. Nobody knew what the reason was. Then one day I fall in sleep early evening. I stopped breathing. In the very last moment my system went in surviving. I was standing on the sofa and tried to get air in my lounges. Since five years I have a Ccap. Three days after I got my mask my heart rate went down. I have no fat neck, I'm not overweight and I don't smoke. No other reasons. I needed lots of month to get along with the mask but today I don't want to miss it anymore.

      Fascinating! I hadn't heard that. But my iron's always been okay. I did a quick Google and it seems to have to do with the inflammation that's caused with iron issues. Thanks for the information. Anyone reading should check with their doctor because you don't want to over supplement any more than you want to be deficient in a mineral.

      @@kattatonic1 I hadn't heard that, either! I had already done a sleep study and was on cpap but only used it occasionally. Then during a routine wellness exam, I discovered that my ferritin level was 35. That isn't dangerously low but I wanted it higher so I started taking an iron supplement. After that, I stopped snorting myself awake at night. I can't explain it, I just know it happens.😊

    Adding my own personal testimony to the mix:
    I have always had sleep issues. I couldn’t sleep for more than 4 hours at a time when I was a baby. Got bad mental health issues and vivid nightmares that worsened as I got older. Then I gained a ton of weight after college. Then I started snoring. It was only after the snoring that I had a couple sleep studies done, one at home and one in the hospital, that they found out I had OSA.
    I got my CPAP machine last month. It’s comfortable enough, and allowed me to sleep through the night for the first time in my life. I’m not dead on my feet anymore. I have so much more energy and thinking is so, so, so much easier! If you’re reading this and you feel like your sleep is shit and “just turning off your phone” or “just going back to bed when you wake up” or whatever isn’t working, keep advocating for yourself. It did actually get better in my case, thank the gods

    I concur that those of us with severe allergies suffer from allergy related sleep apnea. I seemed to be plagued with mucus OVERLOAD from 2am to 4am. I wake up either coughing or gaging from mucus build up. I have been on every med known to pharma and react violently to the side effects cuz my body is hypersensitive already. That stuff just increases or heightens other symptoms making it WORSE in the long run. I have changed my diet, helping a bit. Run air purifiers, helps a bit, but nothing seems to thoroughly stop the response causing sleep deprivation . For whatever reason during sleep, deeper sleep, mucus accumulates and wakes me up struggling to breathe. I sleep with head elevated, and all the recommendations. It's so very discouraging to not be able to get needed REST.

      Get the sinus rinse or flush with salt . This has opened up my nasal passages and kept my allergies at bay completely. I also have a custom made mandibular device instead of a cpap

      That time of night is when our bodies have a natural rise in histamine, and it can be really disruptive if you are dealing with allergies, thus a higher histamine load.
      For me, I would wake up at that time, but more often drenched in sweat or from a nightmare. Besides sleep apnea I also have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Getting diagnosed and starting treating that helped stop the 3am awakenings, too.

    Hey Dr. Marks, great topic! Here's an interesting point of information for this group. I have a low sleep apnea score, less than five events per hour. However, my apnea events are severe and disruptive and my sleep apnea requires treatment.

    I have a long history of depression but had been in remission off meds since 2016. It came back in 2023 with a vengeance. The meds that worked before made no difference. But I had received a new Apple Watch as a Christmas gift in 2022. The watch tracks oxygen saturation and I noticed many nights my oxygen was dropping during sleep. I told my doctor who ordered a sleep study which revealed severe sleep apnea. Long story short, after 3 months on CPAP, my mood and cognitive function improved greatly.

    My 17 year old son just had a sleep study. He had 142 events an hour. That seems like a lot.

      It is quite a lot. I had 139 events an hour when I was diagnosed, and my doctor said I had “severe” apnea. I have to use quite a strong setting on my machine-I can tell because it sucks my mouth open quite dramatically and I have to tape it closed at night before I put my mask on. Haha.

      ​@@StephanieDefinitely Do you mind if I ask - do you have just a nasal mask? Because I had one and stopped using it due to my mouth opening during sleep and causing me to snore like a chainsaw. I wanted to try taping it shut but was a little scared to...
      I'd rather use a nasal mask and tape the mouth though, than switch to a full mouth/nose mask.

    Was diagnosed with mild apnea (AHI 7.1) last month. I definitely have worsened depression, but not most of the signs you went over. So far the CPAP machine is only making sleep and mental health worse, including due to the added executive function demands. The one I have literally snitches on me through a 5G connection so my insurance can check that I’m compliant-it’s sounds like a paranoid delusion, but it’s an actual product feature they tell you about. The only other option my doctor gave me was jaw surgery that’s much more extreme than anything you described. Oral appliances and minor surgeries didn’t even come up.
    This is a great video. It just sucks that you can do everything you’re supposed to and still get screwed by a crappy doctor and a worse healthcare system. I desperately need a second opinion.

    One sign that I had was having too many red blood cells (secondary polycythemia). After getting on a cpap machine my red blood cells fell back into the normal range and have stayed there. You can also have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome which means you don't have the stopping of breathing but your airway is small and it's hard to breath causing waking or not a very restful sleep. These are things that all can be helped with devices, exercise etc.

    I Have been watching your channel for many years - You Are Amazing - Helping Others Understand Their Mental Illness - Things your not told by Your Psychiatrist Etc Thank YOU - My 33 Year old son has BAD Sleep Apnea HE WAS WAKING UP CONSTANTLY AND COULD NOT PERFORM AT HIS BUSINESS - HE HAD BAD BRAIN FOG AND FELL ASLEEP AT WORK ALL THE TIME - He has used a Machine for at least 10 years now He was diagnosed at age 5 having ADHD - He Now has Depression & Anxiety

    Amazon sells pulse oximeters that record your blood oxygen levels while you sleep (or awake, doesn't matter) and you download your results via Bluetooth to your phone. It's not an official medical device, I got one for around 75 bucks and because the results showed I had more than 30 times an hour where I likely stopped breathing, I felt more comfortable spending the money on a sleep study and getting a proper diagnosis for sleep apnea. I still use the pulse ox along with my CPAP sometimes.

    You are amazing 😍 Not one of your videos wasn't helpful..you are spot on with everything you just said I had a sleep study and I HAVE SLEEP APNEA AND ALL OF THESE SYMPTOMS...lost insurance for a few years and they came and retrieved the CPAP machine..I need it back because these headaches are not pleasant.. 😢😢😢 Thank you for putting the word out

    I unknowingly had sleep apnea for years and it honestly was ruining my life. I was not sleeping or having dreams. I had a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates. after nose surgery I am dreaming and sleeping it's amazing I cannot recommend getting checked out more

      Nasal surgery is risky and some people end up worse with a hole in their nose. I have a deviated septum but I use the nasal salt rinse / sinus flush and somehow it opens up my nasal passages

    Very necessary video. Many people don't event know.
    In my case i noticed that i try to coast by first part of day and feel bad - something like hangover but without headache - sometimes even feel sleepy.
    I tried to compensate bad mood with food. Also I stayed late at night to spend in bed minimal amount of time - because i realised that sleeping is more exhausting than not sleeping at all.
    I also stumbled over list of possible symptoms and many matched, psychological also.
    Finally i ended on CPAP few years ago, i have no problem accepting it (many do), but i was in some way dissapointed - i expected magical change but changes are small but essential
    in the same way as short stopages in air are essential in this condition.
    But clearly is better any method you choose - take care of it!
    (My dissapoiment was in large about psychological symptoms - wich matched but have diffrent source).

      Use the sinus flush nasal rinse and get a mandibular device. Ask your sleep clinic who makes these / they can custom make it for you instead of using the annoying cpap

    Thank you for this video Dr. Marks (I haven't even watched it yet). I was diagnosed with OSA last week and met with the Sleep Dr. yesterday, who prescribed a CPAP machine. I will share my experience once Ive gotten the machine and used it for a few days. ❤😊

      You will notice improvement, I required less sleep, evidence of less turning and tossing, usually 6 hours of sleep was good, look forward to it. 🙋🏻

      @@ivyworth862 sounds good, the improvements I had were just overall good rest, the yawning stopped later in the day. Nothing too dramatic yet noticeable enough and that's all it takes. I do have some of the other symptoms that Dr Marks is talking about yet I still have it, anidonia, diminished enthusiasm, symptoms of depression that is, despair. I got the CPAP back in 2014, it's only for nasal so it's not a big deal, enough to create a problem. I don't use it every night because I've learned to become a side sleeper.

      @@ombra711 Yes it's working just fine, added value on my end however is questionable. I've got the minimal diagnosis for a nasal seal some people have the whole mouth and nose, I don't need that. Either way I wake up refreshed my voice is not crackly dry sore throat like the video said. I got a new nasal interface and it's really much improved the difference between me using it and not.

    Just had an at home sleep study done (in the lab I couldn't get into deep enough sleep for them to tell anything). They said I have sleep apnea. I was surprised because I don't snore. But I sleep terribly and wake up more tired than when I went to bed. My whole family needs CPAPs. Now looking at these signs, it's not a great galloping shock. The latter half describes me perfectly.
    The issue is... I have claustrophobia and anxiety. I am not worried about the mask itself so much. But I'm worried about the positive air pressure. Air being forced down my lungs feels... invasive and like something I need to be panicking about. I tell my brain, "No, this is good, this will help," but deep down where logic doesn't rule, my mind goes, "Oh, my God, stop this, this is awful, why can't I breathe right? Make it stop NOW."
    I'm thinking about asking my doctor about upping my anxiety medicine just as I get used to this new situation. I'm going to use some CBT tips and tricks I've learned from having chronic pain to, well, dwell in the suck, but I'm really... unsure about how it's going to go. Really nervous.

      I freaked out the first couple of times and thought, this will never work, but then I got used to it and was fine. There is also a setting where it uses very little air for like 30-40 minutes. Then once you’re asleep it increases the pressure.

      Don’t get a cpap it is hell and I couldn’t even sleep when I got it. Instead ask the sleep clinic to find you a specialist that custom makes mandibular devices / mouthguard. I use it every night and happier than a pig in poop

      As someone else said, the machine should have a setting to start with low pressure and then ramp up over time. That's what I used when I started and it helped, since I had some small anxieties similar to yours. It's gotten more comfortable as I've used it more

    I have most of these, and have done 5 sleep studies over the past 2 years, 2 at home, 3 in lab and they said my blood O² levels are fine, but I am drained ALL DAY EVERY DAY, memory fog, energy non-existent.
    Sleep Dr wanted to Put me on a sleep medication, because I have insomnia I equate to sleep PTSD, and unconscious anxiety about sleeping, because I do not sleep well.
    I have severe allergies.
    Was refered to a sleep specialist that made me a mouth bite. I woke up choking and vomiting wearing it (multiple times)
    Then. I
    Got referred to an Otolaryngologist. HE ORDERED A CT scan of sinuses which told the story the sleep Dr couldn't assess, because I Could Not sleep as I normally would in sleep studies, and the home studies the equipment didn't function or record data properly.
    I will probably need surgery.
    Don't give up getting assessed, push for more diagnostics and get different Drs if needed! ❤

      Did U ever try the nasal sinus flush ? That opens up your nasal passages and the sleep clinic can find you so one who makes mouthguards

    My sleep apnea cost me a relationship. I began dating a wonderful woman and she made a comment about her ex-husband needing a CPAP and how she hated the machine. I never wanted her to know I used one. I eventually broke up with her and one of the reasons was I did not want her to know I used a CPAP. I tried the dental device but it did not work well and whenever we spent the night she had to go sleep in a different room. I should have just been honest and told her I used one. I eventually met someone else and married her and she made my life a living hell. Now I AM depressed, anxious and broke !

      Did you get a mouthguard online ? Those don’t work. You have to go back to sleep clinic and ask them to connect you to a professional who custom makes the mandibular devices. Those work

    Dr. Tracy, I lost my sister to sleep at me about a year ago you can die from it. She was always switching from bed to chair. She couldn’t rest she was 56 I never heard from anybody Dying so sad

      There is plenty of medical proof that chronically poor sleep harms overall health. Was that the cause of death printed on her death certificate? Because that would be a first. People die of sleeping sickness, caused by a parasite or by a rare genetic disorder. They die of something else in all other cases. And poor sleep absolutely CAN cause cardiac and metabolic damage that will eventually contribute to your death. Your sister almost certainly died due to an underlying disorder that developed either before or during her insomnia, and the two (or three +) disorders synergistically caused her decline and death. Tell everyone you know that ignoring sleep disorders will contribute to dying early. You have the proof.

      @@Cathy-xi8cbOSA increases likelihood of sudden cardiac death. In people with epilepsy, it can trigger seizures, some of which can be severe. There are some studies looking at if the link between OSA and non-epileptic seizures is strong enough to be a concern, but it's happened, especially in people who have a higher amount of occurrences per hour. Anecdotally, a family member under 40 has very severe OSA and when his mask comes off, he has seizures that are severe enough for him to lose fecal continence. It's a thing. He's been told by his specialist that he needs a special backup battery for his machine because, in his case, if the power goes out and he is asleep, he could have a severe seizure and he could die.
      It's rare and not something most people need to be concerned about, but it can happen, it's known in the medical field that it can happen, and there has been research on different ways it can happen.

    Yup, have it, hate it. I have all you mentioned. I did the sleep study. Gave up on my CPAP. In addition, I keep waking up to go to restroom. Kill me. It's like I wasn't meant to live.

      When you're up for it, please try the CPAP again. Maybe a different mask. Maybe at a lower pressure to start. It took me over a month to get used to mine. I kept dreaming that I was being strangled by snakes because I would roll over into the tubing. I was lucky enough to have a close friend who'd been using one for many years. She kept preaching to stick with it. She was right. I put a hook thing above my bed to hold up the tubing. Hoping you find a way with the CPAP or another solution. Sending you some hugs!

      Air pressure was actually perfect.
      I had few issues with getting used to CPAP. One of them was that I sleep in a very cool, sometimes cold, bedroom. Due to the humidifier feature I had on my machine water would accumulate inside of tubing.
      And I wasn't very keen on adding cleaning of CPAP to my daily routine. Within few days tubing would start to stink. And I couldn't afford cleaning machines. I'm not sure if they would have even helped as I never tried them. Back then they were $1k.
      Also, I get up about four or five times a night just to go to the restroom. Eventually I just got tired of having to put the mask back on and tired of fighting the mask to get a proper seal as I have oily skin.
      Instead of helping me get quality sleep it just made me frustrated. It's just made it harder to fall back to asleep.
      I better stop here, I am sure I can keep listing excuses.

    I had several of these symptoms 20 to 25 years ago, then I was "fortunate" to suffer anemia and diabetes, resulting a large weight loss. As bad as those maladies were, dropping 80 pounds -- a loss I have maintained through better eating habits -- seems to have ended the sleep problems. Still, though, if I lie down to go to sleep too soon after eating a meal, I will have shortness of breath throughout the night and get little sleep.
    I've solved that problem by doing away with laptop use in bed -- no matter how natural it may seem to take this device to the mattress, I have resolved to limit myself to watching Dr. Marks and the other YT channels while seated at my desk. Then, after plenty of time to let my digestion progress, I lie down to drop off. (Which I'm about to do - g'night all!)

    What about anxiety making sleep apnea? Reversed cause and effect. I have sleep apnea (choking) mostly when I am feeling fear or worry about something important.

      Anxiety alone wouldn't cause sleep apnea, but I can see how it could worsen the symptoms. A person with anxiety would still need a source of obstruction to have sleep apnea and reduced oxygen going to the brain.

    I wish there were more ways to treat sleep apnea than just sleep studies and C-pap machines. I’ve got three relatives with it, every classic symptom listed (and my partner can vouch for just how bad it can get), and all the side effects listed - which doesn’t help my already diagnosed anxiety and bipolar disorder. But doctors rarely believe me because I’m in my 30s, am a heathy weight, and have never smoked. I asked for a referral and heard nothing for a year. Asked again and by the time it got scheduled I’d already lost my insurance. I just gave up and accepted that this is my life, and apologize to my husband whenever it bothers him. So few non c-pap options seem to actually work. It’s really disappointing and frustrating.

By the time they got around to calling to just make the appointment I'd already lost my insurance. And I doubt they'd make them without one.       I'm also in my 30s, not overweight and never smoked, and have mild sleep apnea. My doc said like 20% of sleep apnea patients are not overweight.
      I suspect I have sleep apnea because of my connective tissue disorder that likely makes the back of my throat close more easily from floppy tissue (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome/Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder)
      I use a CPAP (or rather an Automatic PAP) and it seems to be helping.
      But I realize the privilege I have to have health insurance, time, and funds to pursue a diagnosis and treatment. Heck, I'm still paying off my sleep study and machine almost a year later. Our health care system in America sucks.
      I hope you are able to stick it out and eventually be able to get some help with your sleep apnea.

    I have depression since i was a kid and i am 43yo now and since 3yrs i diagnose my cptsd plus anxiety. Within 2yrs got my mild sleep apnea and wearing my dental divice for almost 6mos.but still my depression is worsening. Am still tired my cognitive is getting slow, even my speaking i felt im lazy to speak it feels i cant speak proper. I hate my situation dont know what to do, struggling to going to work as i am working assistant nurse in a nursing home, its drained me a lot my job right now i am so exhausting. My job is quite exhausting need to ran all the times, there are times im collapsing when i get home from work, got dizzy so much and theres a time even during i was working cleaning my home i was suddenly asleep my eyes cant stop falling so i feel asleep a seconds it happends when during im doing something.

    I did a thorough sleep test with my husband (it can be covered by my private insurance in my country) and I have mild sleep apnea that is rare caused by psychological/neurological reasons. I don’t snore nor am I overweight, I just don’t breathe while sleeping! Maybe I should see a psychiatrist, as I’ve seen a ENT doctor…

      Thanks for the suggestion - Anhedonia is a symptom of depression and not a separate diagnosis. It means you have trouble finding pleasure in just about anything. Not everyone with depression has anhedonia as a symptom.

    For several months as I’m falling asleep/about to fall asleep I feel myself stop breathing for a few seconds at a time and my gf told me I snore really loud now. I have a small chin/jaw and I’m a pretty heavy smoker. Unless I’m manic I never feel rested enough when I sleep. I have headaches when I wake up frequently. Idk if my insurance will cover a sleep study but I think I need one.

    Hey Dr. Marks - I have CPTSD ( Trauma Abuse since a Child into Adulthood ) I tried a Psychotherapist Via Zoom and We had 4 Sessions and ( I can not handle it its just too much - Things I remembered and too things I didn't Seems She was Pushing me so much that I had a bad BREAKDOWN After Every Session ) I had to STOP - Any Advise as I am seeing another one but Terrified it will happen again Thanks ( I also have Bipolar 2 in which I take My meds daily and they work of course "Cocktails" but for a couple of years they have helped but Of course I have My Yearly Episodes )

      Not all therapy involves talking about your traumas. I recommend you keep looking and to let the therapist know that you do not want to talk about it. Sometimes trauma is repressed for a good reason and we don't need to rip up the wounds. That's my two cents, I'm not a licensed therapist, just someone with CPTSD and DID.

    my partner and i both have the choking symptom but a bit differently. he definitely stops breathing. i do wake up quite often due to gasping. i hope there is better developments in the technology for this because i do not see either one of us being able to wear a cpap indefinitely, i pull it off in the night and he wont even try one.

    If you suspect you have sleep apnea and for whatever reason can’t go to the hospital or afford a cpap machine right away, turn on a fan or turn up an air filter you have running, the positive air pressure should help you go to sleep

    Additionally, women in perimenopause and menopause tend to develop sleep apnea due to the reduction or loss of progesterone. Hormone replacement therapy can help reverse the symptoms.

    Just at the right time again Dr Marks! I was recently diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and I'm not sure if I should go ahead with the costly CPAP machine or try another sleep clinic as a second opinion. I feel like the sleep clinics want to sell the machine so they'll diagnose everyone as needing one anyways?

      I guess it depends on the clinic or what's the norm in your area, but where I'm from, the sleep clinic themselves don't sell the machines. They refer you to a third party vendor or you can just source a machine yourself. I personally know one guy who thought he needed one, got tested, and they told him he didn't have apnea, or so mild that he wouldn't benefit from a machine.
      From what I've been told in the last year or so there's been a shortage of these machines (same as everything else with microchips) and this has resulted in long wait times or, like in my case, having to settle for an older model machine. Given those circumstances, you'd think they wouldn't be too eager to sell machines to people who don't actually need them.

    I have both obstructive and central sleep apnea, even with a CPAP I still have severe sleep issues, because with central sleep apnea, your brain kinda doesn’t regulate that “auto breath” function.

      Central sleep apnea is a really scary thing, You essentially need to be ventilated by that machine during sleep. There is no surgery or medication for it. Make sure your machine is always in perfect order, perfect fit of that mask, etc. Think of it like someone who is a brittle diabetic and never goes without monitoring and managing glucose.

    My issue with the CPAP is there is no resolution of the symptoms. If you stop wearing it for months your sleep apnea reverses.

    I had a sleep study done due to my fatigue and treatment resistant depression. My sleep study was fine.
    Many years later found out was ME/CFS and PEM that contributed to depression. Now that I have reduced my push crash cycle I am doing much better. Starting LDN very soon.
    Would love to see ME/CFS and how this chronic physical condition impacts mental health.

      @@nerdbamarich2063 How? I went to my doctor. Because I had insomnia and was dealing with grief from a few things as well as a cancer diagnosis all while being burnt out from over work.
      Unfortunately for me I also had the flu early in that time period so my fatigue was attributed to life stresses.
      So the ME/CFS was missed and from my diagnosis was told my fatigue was depression and was to exercise.
      Even when I said exercise made my “depression” worse, it was not until I learned that PEM or Post Exertion Malaise is one symptom. The dysautonomia is another and now it all makes sense why antidepressants did not work.

      Yeah, I’d love to know more info too. I live in the south (USA) and no one wants to actually find a diagnosis for anything (mental or physical) in my backwoods state.
      Also there was a lot of acronyms you used that I don’t understand at all lol. I think CFS is chronic fatigue syndrome? Idk. Was hard to decode what you were saying 😆 BUT I’m glad you have been able to find some relief!

      Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
      The more correct name is the ME.
      PEM is Post Exertion Malaise and LDN is Low Dose Naltrexone.
      Yes I lost many years to a missed diagnosis. Once I found out about PEM and this explained so much.
      There are so many physical things that are labeled mental when your lab tests are normal. And when physical conditions are treated as psychological there is real harm.
      I hope you find what works.

    i shared this video with my elderly friend who hates his cpap machine and didn't really understand how it was supposed to help him. Your video helped him understand how his other issues tied into it AND the tiny b-roll you had of the lady sleeping on her side made him realize he could too. We googled it to make sure, because he was told not to but it was making it impossible for him to sleep which made him resent/ refuse to wear it, but his doctor threatened to terminate him as a patient if he didn't. He was so excited (and a bit miffed he was misinformed) he FINALLY Slept WELL with the damn machine. THANKYOU!

      This is such a wonderful point, and kudos for sticking with your friend until they were on the right track.
      A couple years ago i worked with a guy who knew about his apnea, and even already owned a CPAP machine but he always insisted it was "too uncomfortable to wear". The part that sucks is you could see his struggles in the work place where he very likely would have experienced great improvement. I hope whereever he is now that he's found and taken this advice for himself and is using his machine.

    An APAP is much more tolerable than a CPAP and more commonly prescribed these days.

    i feel rested in the morning i think i have this tho i dont snore dont day sleep but i always needa pee during the night i dont mouth breath i also dont choke during sleep. dam i think i might have it tho idk

    Hey Dr. Marks! My younger brother (20) developed a very distinct clicking sound (from the back of his throat) when asleep when he was around 12/13. He doesn't even know he makes the sound. We've looked for answers (primarily online), but no one knows what it is. There's even a whole Reddit thread of people whose loved ones have a similar issue. Surprisingly, the thread is several years old, yet there is no answer. Is that something you'd have an answer about? Is it a possible psychological issue?

      The tissues of the pharynx relax during sleep. If the cervical spine and the hyoid bone are not sufficiently stabilized by ligaments, then gravity and muscle tension pull them out of alignment. If your brother is super flexible, has ASD or another neurodevelopmental disorder, or has a history of sports or vehicle accidents, he should be evaluated for hypermobility.

    In the beginning the machine worked in aiding my sleep but not long after I found it adding to the problem. The mask was incredible uncomfortable and difficult to keep on all night. I ended up abandoning the use of the machine.

      I have been using a CPAP for a little over a year and it took me a few months to find the right combination of headwear. The first mask had a hard dome over my nose and 4 straps around my head. It worked at first because I had severe OSA and I was desperate for sleep. But once I didn't feel so sleep deprived, the hard mask was too uncomfortable. There are a lot of options for masks and they are way cheaper than the CPAP machine. What is currently working for me now is a soft Philips Respironics DreamWear Under the Nose Nasal mask. I also recommend talking to your doctor's office, they may have different mask samples for you try.

    I have mild sleep apena. I also have a sinus condition, a lung condition and anxiety/ depression. Unfortunately I am unable to adjust to using a CPAP machine. I want to use it so bad but keep waking up in a panic. I have no idea what to do. I'm going back to my doctor but I doubt she will be able to help.

      Go back to the sleep clinic and tell them you need a mandibular device . They can connect you to a professional who custom makes them

      @deepthoughts8393 Thanks I will mention that to my doctor. I went back to the sleep clinic but they weren't much help. I guess there are some insurance issues. My doctor wants me to get a different kind of test and submitted it to my insurance. The whole thing is frustrating. Thanks for your help.

      @@allentempleton2429 The cpap was useless to me because I could never sleep with that blasted machine. The custom made mandibular device works but only made my a professional. you cannot buy them online because they won’t work and it’s a scam. Also try the nasal / sinus rinse with those salt packets from the pharmacy. That will open up your nasal passages so you can breathe . I do this 2/3 times a day and use nasal strips as well for bed. Now I can breathe through my nose

    My nose is always congested even when it's empty. I have a bed with a remote control and I sleep better if i have the back of my bed slightly up. My nose makes me feel like I don't get enough oxygen, and it feels suffocating. I don't often feel rested.

      It sounds like when I had undiagnosed allergies. I had to get an air filter machine and also remove all scented stuff from my house (got unscented laundry detergent, soaps, cleaning products), etc. also Flonase spray will block allergens. Try it!

      Get a nasal rinse / sinus flush from pharmacy . This completely solved the issue and I also have a mouthguard

    I tend to snore loudly and have the apnea symptoms only when on antipsychotics. I get more quiet sleep without them. Is there any correlation?

      Yes I noticed that too. I however don’t use cpap but have a custom made mandibular device and it works better than cpap

      I have a mouth denture. I don’t know if you mean the same thing. It seems to work fine, but I don’t usually need it at all when I go off medications. Strange!

      @@AliKwj I don’t like antidepressants long term . They seem to have more bad side effects than anything else. I tired microdosing with shrooms and I gave up all my medication. 💊 psylocybin therapy seems to regulate your brain and help you sleep better .
