As an ex Yarmouth boy living in Dubai now - this video brought back so many memories. The pub behind the Carlton Hotel used to be called Ye Olde Shades and strangely when I was a teenager was on the route for locals on a Friday night - we used to have a few in the town then end up in Shades before we went onto the seafront and the various clubs (Discos in those days) - It then became part of the Penny Farthing suite of Bars that The Carlton Hotel developed. The Dolphin was a quite busy pub during the 80s when Norfolk Line's ferry terminal was next door and a lot of truck drivers would drink (and eat in there) there was a Greek Taverna restaurant in the Dolphin run by Tony (Toniponi) who moved on to the Colombia Tavern - I used to go there for lunch in the 80s when I working for Matthews Transport on the Fishwharf - I could tell stories about a lot of the pubs in this tour - happy days!!

Tim...Gabby...I was born in Barking (east London) seventy odd years ago and growing up in those early years our parents used to take us kids up to pubs with them where they would keep an eye on us and keep us plied with fizzy drink and crisps or had biscuits called dog biscuits back in the day and one of the pubs in Barking was called the Yarmouth smack. Years later I married a Yarmouth woman and moving to live in Yarmouth I discovered that there was a pub called the Barking smack..Anyway, to cut a long story short, there is a link and that is where Barking had a large fishing fleet to service London and it was common for both Barking and Yarmouth fishing fleets to link up an fish for herring and to mark the events both had public houses built honoring the occasion

I live in the old white lion, if you’d like to see inside, let me know and I’ll send you some photos of my place, it’s separated up into several apartments. It was built in the 1600’s and there are some period features. Even a window in the wall panelling exposing some of the painting on the wall which is hundreds of years old.

The Dolphin pub closed in 2008, was built by local architect JW Cockerill, he patented the decorative work, bricks over concrete and white decorative tiles, the pub started to go into decline after the 1950s and never recovered.
He also rebuilt the Winter Gardens, moved it from Torquay without breaking a single window!

Really enjoyed the video Tim and Gaby. I've done a couple of GY pub crawls over the years, one starting at the Apollo tavern in Northgate street and finishing 19 pubs later at the Pub on the Prom. Second one, the following summer, was 15 new pubs, starting at the Kings Arms Northgate Street and finishing in the Albion. One drink in each and the walk between some far enough to help burn off some of the alcohol 😂. As for the New Royal Standard, back in the '80's it was 'Sinatra's for a while. 👍🏼

I can’t believe that what you’re showing was a years ago!!! Not a year ago, the “Bricklayers “ has been turned into flats years ago... I must admit probably 30 odd years ago..! I And friends 👫 visited several of these pubs on our nights out, their were a few pubs you didn’t mention, maybe they were way before both of your time... The Bird cage, The Brunswick, it had another small bar down the stairs, It was the place of “punks “, “ Gothics”, And “Metal heads”, I spent many a good few hours In this place, over the weekend s,..Oh it was great, I actually felt freedom there-, well I’m now almost 55 in a couple of months, my inner goth is still their, my metal head is inside to, life was good and safe, I sound like a sad old bag now..but We all hit the dance floor when the music was playing..Goths-Punks-metal heads- I loved my life in them days!!!, I guess getting older the feelings are still their, but the face, and hair have left the building many years ago!!!, watching this video tonight was a really good pick me up!!!🐾🦊🙏🙏❤️x

The "Monks" are "Friars" pub was called the "Blackfriars Arms" ..... The "Royal Standard" used to be called "Sinartras" .......
Would like to walk the town with you one day, and show you all the pubs you probably didn't know about (lots that still look like pubs too!
Also "Lacons Brewery" was originally on the site of "lidl" today, and I'm pretty sure there is still an emblem in the wall at back of car park, that pays homage to the site!
By the way, I'm not a pub goer really, but also drove a taxi in the town 30 plus years ago!
And the "Murmaration" of starling's you saw, were probably grouping to roost in Kent square, near Flints bar.
If you have never been there after dark, I think you will be amazed at the many thousands of birds that roost in those few trees, and the noise they make all night long!
Won't say anything about the droppings! Haha!
    Interesting stuff!

The Penny Flyer or the Penny Farthing (if i recall) is the name of the one next to Albert Square...I used to go there after work at the dolphin Hote l( which is now under a new name)...And food for thought, I used to live with Jason Staham's brother Lee and his wife Michelle circa 1984.... They lived near Brittanica Pier....Also worked with Jason briefly when I lodged with Lee and Michelle at his dads lock up:-)

The graves next to the "Recruiting Sargent" now called "The Recruit" are non Christian burials, and go back to a time (medieval) when the Great Yarmouth wall was intact and surrounded the town, these were people of non Christian denominations, who were not allowed to be buried within the town walls!
Part of the pub is in fact the old town wall, at the back of the stones, and so that spot is outside of the old town boundary!
