Bad Vibes In Deprived Seaside Town 🇬🇧

  • Great Yarmouth is a seaside town on the East coast of England in Norfolk. It is synonymous with classic British seaside tourism, and one of the original holiday resorts in the country. The town's seafront, know as 'the golden mile, attracts millions of visitors annually to its amusements and vast golden beach. The truth, however, is that Great Yarmouth is now a town in decline and is suffering from harsh deprivation. Much of the work available is very seasonal and the lack of year round work results in much poverty for many. I decided to visit the town in the 'off season' to see what life is really like for the people that live there. I discovered a troubled and decaying town where angry locals are not happy with the faded reality of this once great seaside town in 2024.

Images and videos always trigger treasured and fond memories of my Grandad and of my youth. It's such a shame to see that the locals have fallen out of love with the town. Biggest thing Great Yarmouth council could do would be to try and funnel more of their limited resources into ensuring a core part of it remains attractive in the way Southend clearly has. Would also be nice to have a companion video of Cromer/Sheringham perhaps. This isn't representative of Norfolk as a whole.

I love the norfolk coast but the bigger coastal places that are and were aimed at family's and kids for caravan seaside holidays have been neglected, the small coastal villages their is nothing like it norfolk is a gem, even old Hunstanton has its charm, wells, Snettisham, a coastal drive through them all and you will see the best, those little villages are more expensive and more geared to elders so family's most likely wouldn't find them attractive as cheap meals what kids like aren't really available.

I appreciate the tourism pitch but, these leisure facilities are priced out of most of the locals' budget The new pool's admission fee is over double. The outer harbour that doesn't benefit the average local? Damp council houses, if you're one of the lucky ones. Instrument wielding teenagers robbing everything on wheels in Gorleston and Caister. All of this with a healthcare system rivalling a teddy bear's picnic in organisation skills. Meanwhile there's lots of new and shiny cars parked outside the Town Hall.
In fairness, the council do provide employment to over 10000000 gardeners just not that many cleaners.....

Ermmm I don't know about Gorleston, it's fairly rough in areas, but Caister? I live there and have never seen roving gangs of tooled up kids. The worst you get is occasionally a group of teenagers hanging around outside of COOP, but what village hasn't got a shop where bored kids congregate at?

The problem is these towns are run by councils who dont know what they are doing. The councillors are not qualified or experienced to run a town. I’m from Norwich, dad was born and raised for most of his childhood in Yarmouth. My mum worked late shifts when I was a kid so my dad would often take myself and my sister out to Yarmouth during weekend daytime while my mother was sleeping. We would just walk along the beech, have ice cream and sometimes dip into the amusements for a laugh on the 2p machines.
It’s a strange one for me because even as a kid I knew the place was run down and actually it was much worse back then in terms of empty buildings and hopelessness (if you can believe that) because in recent years they have spent money on the seafront just revamping the place and making it look better, all the same I have a lot of nostalgia and even now when my family go for the odd trip out to Yarmouth I will jump at the chance. I have large extended family in Yarmouth and even though I’ve never lived there it is like a second home to me.
My most recent visit was shocking. The place is packed full of migrants. People give you strange looks and don’t speak English. Posters for missing people are very prominent and once you’re off the seafront Yarmouth is still dingy and run down. My brother, sister and young nephew were walking on their own when I noticed groups of migrant men leering at my sister, I immediately accompanied them because I feared for her safety.
    It’s all very sad.

Great Yarmouth has a wonderful beach, pier and promenade. It is let down by a lack of original shops and, not to be unkind, substandard accommodation. People's expectations are higher nowadays but if you are going to pay £60 a night for a room then you shouldn't have mismatched furniture and an outdated bathroom in your hotel room. Local businesses struggle because the council does not invest sufficiently in the town to make it a desirable destination. But I still visit every year because I love the sea and I know these businesses need our custom. Fish and chips are fabulous and there is also a great Vietnamese restaurant. Great Yarmouth could be an absolute jewel.

What he said about people accepting that there are only jobs for 8 months of the year is true. There's absolutely nothing there. At least 90% of people are on the dole. If you live in Yarmouth you've admitted that there's no point in you being alive. I left in 2016 to join the Army and basically never went back. I did have a few months there last year just to see, and never again. Everyone is just on the dole and selling drugs. They think it's good to be like that. Disgusting mess.

The war did huge damage, the planners finished that off afterwards. The Herring (remember it was massive fishing port) were overfished and went away. Finally, as a holiday destination it struggles with package deals. Yet still, it has possibilities.

Love the history of the town (every street seems to have a blue plaque) shame that many of the inhabitants seem unaware of that history
and you look at pictures of the town in its heyday and think "what happened?"
That said, the locals are all nice, some are a bit rough around the edges but you can hardly blame them for what is the result of years of neglect from politicans etc
The sea front is still lovely to walk down (though I tend to walk away from the "golden mile" with all the tacky amusement arcades)
and in summer I can think of nowhere else I would rather be, the town really comes to life, fireworks every Wednesday evening, events during the day, the town full of holidaymakers

Me and my Grandad (God rest his soul) used to come up to Yarmouth to spend time in the arcades. A little flutter, nothing serious. But we'd have lunch up there, talk about things, Yarmouth may not be amazing to live in.... but it is symbolic to me. I wish I could go back and relive those memories.

To see the place now after the holidays had there in the 50’s and 60”s heydays is heartbreaking 😢

I thought they were going to refurbish the winter gardens. Hello from Lowestoft. Me and my kids go to the Fair Freights during the Halloween week. In Yarmouth, and it's awesome.

Lived there for 6 months in 97, it was a shithole back then especially in the summer season, off-season is dead.
    The beach is fantastic though.
