King Minos prayed for a sign from Poseidon that he was divinely favored, and so Poseidon granted him a white bull, on the condition that Minos would eventually give it back as a sacrificial offering. When King Minos later refuses and hoped Poseidon would be appeased by the sacrifice of a regular bull, Poseidon was angry and cursed Minos' wife to become infatuated with the bull. Then again, Poseidon is also the one indirectly responsible for Medusa becoming a Gorgon.

Well Hades gets stronger by people's fear and it would generate more fear if people knew about their impending doom but were ultimately powerless to stop it as compared to wiping out the city without people even knowing wtf happened or why. It would be sending a clear signal that gods can do pretty much whatever and humans can do nothing but subject themselves to the whims of the gods. Doing so would break the human's spirits and crush any mortal defiance. And of course people would leave the city, and it would entirely serve the god's purposes as now the story of a city that defied the gods and was destroyed for its trouble will spread to the whole country by the mouth of refugees etc, and so even more people would fear the gods.

15:49 Being fair to Greek mythology, Atlas was one of the last remaining Titans, sentenced to forever hold the sky up on his shoulders and Perseus used Medusa's head to turn him to stone. In other words, I'd say that her being able to petrify the Kraken is pretty accurate, not to mention in line with the Ray Harryhausen Clash of the Titans, which this movie is loosely based off of. Also I'm pretty sure that Perseus eventually died, just off-screen from old age or something; the Witches only said that'd he'd die, not when or how.

They found the Kraken rolled of the tounge much easier so thats a mere ashetic change (I have to admit... Kraken does sound far better!) - In the Original Myths, Hade's did help subdue... But he was unable to do so on his own as The Seas were indeed the domain of Posiden!
It also gets FAR MORE COMPLICATED and Incestuous than that... As The Kraken / Cetus is itself a Titan - So to be created it had to be BORN OF A TITAN... In Greek Mythology one Titan birthed all the Monsters (Not unlike Norse Mythology where GRENDAL was the Bastard Son of a Goddess along with many other mythical Norse creatures...)
With Posidens aide, They managed to control the beast... And yes I say SUBDUE! Niether Hades nor Posiden CREATED THE CETUS / KRAKEN! It is a TITAN! The Titans come BEFORE THE GODS!
CHRONOS, Father of ZEUS was responsible in his arrogance for the Cetus / Kraken being created... A revenge from a spurrned lover for his shall we say Mysoginistic Behaviour of fucking evey woman that he could both mortal and Titan...

Hades's sadness comes from the fact that from this moment he has no longer any power over the mortal souls because Jesus Christ saved them from death. This is the good example how Roman Empire managed to keep its culture after the christianization of the state. They were committed to the Christianity but they still "spoke" the mythological language to describe some themes. So yeah... Which actually makes alot of sense... if you were an all powerful deity and what you created tried to smack talk you am sure you'd find it quite insolent too lol

I want to take this opportunity to clear up a few things about greek mythology.
In greek mythology all the gods are entitled D**kheads (with a capital D) with a few exceptions, one of those is Hades. Hades is probably the only god with actual chill. He is never portrayed as bitter or evil, rather the opposite. His marriage with Persephone started in a rather questionable way but according to the storys it is the most happy marriage in all of the greek pantheon, maybe because Persephone is away for half of the year and there are only 2 storys of Hades cheating on her (although in some sources both of these times the nymphs he was trying to get it on with where transformed into plants by Persephone before he could sleep with them). Also Persephone was perceived as more kind and caring (beeing a goddess of fertility) and she could literally talk Hades into near everything. He also never was bitter about beeing the god of the underworld, he took his assigned role (assigned by randomness and not by Zeus) and performed it dutyfull and with dignity, It is said he does not really care about the living since his domain is the underworld. Sadly Hades is consistently misrepresented in Media, which is kinda sad.
Also shoutout to my boy Hermes, this one is an absolute chad. He is maybe mischiefous at times but never evil or spitefull.
Notice there is a general theme here, that all the gods with actual meanigful dutys are the ones who are not absolute idiots. I mean what is Zeus doing all day? Throwing the occasional lightning? This guy has jackshit to do. That is probably why he is such an a-hole.

Sure, they may include all of these elements, but are never what the core of the story is actually about.

well, the story that this is loosely based on that was the whole point. saving Princess Andromeda from the sea monster. problem is, only Perseus, and the Greek gods, were involved in that rescue, no one else was there to kick the bucket, and Perseus technically didn't even know about the monster before killing Medusa and just happened to have the head on hand (I believe. I maybe remembering it wrong.) also, and this probably goes without saying, the sea monster definitely wasn't the Kraken, and he was sent by Poseidon who was upset because the queen was prideful and claimed to be more beautiful than his daughters, and as usual, Hades is turned into insta bad guy because "god guy underground and in charge of death must be bad (even though in the old stories he seemed like a pretty cool dude, often helping hero's when they came to his realm) sooo... they definitely cant use the original story as an excuse. And thus they look no further. That this doesn't match up with Greek mythology is a minor nuisance. Western people expect a guy who rules the underworld to be the incarnation of evil, because that's how it has always been.

I'm legit surprised that you didn't mention that this 2010 movie is a remake of the 1981 Ray Harryhausen Masterpiece of the same name. It's kind of essential _to_ mention it, because that movie is literally the only reason this movie exists - somebody thought it would be a good idea to cash in on nostalgia while updating nearly flawless special-effects.
I honestly think that's the film's biggest problem; it was _always_ going to exist in the shadow of something superior. But because of it's source material, it has to obey certain boundaries - which is disappointing, considering that those boundaries inhibit the plot more than enhance it. The movie does try to do its own thing and is vastly different from the original, however the main plot points are largely the same and it all boils down to execution.
For example, in the original the Kraken was not a weapon created by the gods; it was just one of the Titans they were able to keep on a leash and only ever broke it out when they decided that mankind needed punishment. Like you said about building-up to the Kraken - considering that most of its screentime is relegated to the end, the movie actually _opens_ with a scene of Zeus ordering Poseidon to unleash the Kraken on Argos; so we see first-hand the devastation the beast is capable of unleashing.
In the remake, Argos is actually the main setting we're trying to save, so all we have on the Kraken is the narration from the beginning. But it's clear that the Filmmakers weren't banking on that being the case; this is a Movie that seems to _depend_ on the nostalgia factor to do half the work for it. They wanted the audience to have the memory of what the Kraken did in the original to still be in mind, so that they would already take the Kraken as a threat; that's the real reason why the Kraken is so over-designed in this movie (apart from referencing Typhon more) - it's meant to up the "wow-factor" of the original Kraken's design.
Another problem is the rearranging of Antagonists. In this version, Calibos is now Acricius the former king of Argos who was deformed by Zeus for killing his wife and attempting to kill his son. But so far, Calibos seems to relegate himself into hiding in shame down in the sewers of Argos, only ever wallowing in his own misery. You could literally forget he was a part of this film at all because of how unimportant he is to the plot.
Whereas in the original, Calibos is probably the driving force behind the plot and is actually the main antagonist. In the original, Calibos is actually a spoiled Prince, the son of the Sea Goddess Thetis. And therein lies the correction to the power-structure problem. With Hades in the remake, he comes off as so powerful that he could lead an open coupe against Zeus outright; but with Thetis being the villainous god from the original, she is clearly below Zeus in power scaling - meaning if she were to outright fight him, she'd lose.
Because Calibos is such a wicked man - going as far as to kill Zeus' own herd of flying horses - Zeus decides to punish him by turning him into a Monster. From that point on, Thetis resents Zeus for punishing her son while sheltering his own.
And because Calibos has had everything stripped from him, he seeks revenge by tormenting the city of Joppa - sending a kind of curse over the land and forcing the Princess Andromeda into playing a game with the lives of her potential suitors. So we see that there's a city with a problem and we know where the problem stems from and how to stop it. Thus we care more about what Joppa isn't going through and why Perseus has to save it - as opposed to Argos which boils down to, poor people in the streets and the Elites have all become Atheists.
On Andromeda - her presence is wasted in the remake due to the addition of Io. In the original, Andromeda was Perseus' love-interest and she occasionally imparts some words of wisdom - she also is demanded to be sacrificed to the Kraken. The motivation to save her as well as all Joppa is what pushes Perseus to literally the underworld and back. In the remake that's traded for Revenge against Hades...which comes off as kind of boring, considering that we know Perseus can't beat Hades. That and the fact that Io is now Perseus' love interest, means that Andromeda's presence in the movie is largely superfluous...She's just a random girl that gave Perseus some wine, and then he has to save from a giant monster. She even tries to put the moves on him at the end of the movie, and he totally rebuffs her.
See where the problems are stemming from? The fact that the movie is a remake and _has_ to include characters like this, when it clearly doesn't know what to do with them. With Acricius, it would have been obvious - when he becomes Calibos, he starts tormenting the city of Argos from his secret lair - sowing the despair that has come over the city and turning the people against the gods; make him into a proper Anarchist, instead of just some self-pitying henchman.
With Andromeda, its even harder considering that I genuinely don't believe there's room in this film for her considering that her leading lady role is given to someone else. She's just _not_ important in the grand scheme of things, which is a problem considering that her being sacrificed is supposed to be a plot point that carries heavy weight.
Honestly, if a few details were changed this movie could be it's own thing; but because it's a remake that is banking on knowing it's a remake, while also trying to "trim down" the excess of the original, and also adding it's own identity, it just fails to actually be it's own thing. It comes off like that scene in the movie where Perseus finds the original prop of Bubo and is told to leave it behind; the film is directly acknowledging that it doesn't know what to do with certain aspects of the old movie, and just shoe-horns them in for the reference.

I know a lot of Fantasy novels had used this idea on their worldbuilding (even the Conan books, I think) but nowadays people asociate it with Terry Pratchett's comedy series Diskworld more that anything so is kind of difficult to take seriously

    • @lonestarr1490

No mythology or religion ever believed that their deities actually required prayers to survive. I see why it's beneficial for an intertwining of interests in a story. But gods never worked that way and thus, establishing them to do so in the narrative only degrades what it means to be a god.
Not including Pratchett in that, though, because one of the underlying themes of his Diskworld has always been establishing things to be quite the opposite from what one would expect and then observing where that leads to. So that's fair in this context. But in an actual epic about actual Greek gods? Meh.

The whole conflict between the gods and men and the cessation of prayer to the gods could have been explained if they made two simple additions:
First, explain to the viewer that the prayer only reaches the gods if it is performed inside a temple. No temple access, no food.
Second, introduce a greedy human ruling character who blocks access to said temple out of jealousy that the people are praying to the gods and not him.
Now we have a more relatable villain in that human ruler, an explanation as to why the people don't pray (they can't), and a character ripe for a nice revenge kill scene.

I think he's a good actor, though I don't think leading action hero are his best roles. He was good in Hacksaw Ridge and, if we want to bring games into this, he was great as Mason in the first two black ops games. Unfortunately he seems to get cast as an action hero a lot and besides his voice work in COD, he just doesn't really have the leading power. Him constantly being cast in action films doesn't help his cause either.
