Hello Filmento. Always good to see your vids. Tell me, do u think your tips for movie writing is also good for books? i mean... it makes a lot of sense for me, but i'm a fuckin noob so idk. ANSWER ME FILMENTO S2.
Seriously, his CGI is absolutely fucking flawless. Everybody raves about how perfect Gollum in LOTR is, and while that was groundbreaking for being the origin of mocap, Davy Jones is superior in basically every way. Gollum is fairly humanoid, just with some odd proportions, while Jones (specifically his face) is completely out of left field. Nothing made in 2006 or before looked even close to that good.
It’s beyond its time how good the CGI was. All elements of the cgi are just insane, the tentacles, how his mouth moves, the mannerisms etc. It has to be one of the best uses of CGI ever used and Bill Nighy is incredible
Pirates is slightly more impressive than Endgame in one major respect, and that is they made a workable trilogy from a film that no one expected a sequel let alone a trilogy from, and they nicely tied together all the threads that were present in that first film to a satisfying conclusion. Too bad they didn't leave it alone with that.
The sad part is, that unlike other series, there's no alternative to Pirates that really scratches that itch. If you loved the Marvel movies, well hey, there's a LOT more for you. If you liked the Terminator trilogy, well, other stuff like Die Hard will probably scratch that itch for you. But Pirates of the Caribbean single-handedly made Pirate movies GOOD. The only two pirate films we had after the flippin' 50's are Muppet Treasure Island (Which is actually a really good movie) and Cutthroat Island, a movie so infamously bad it actually killed interest in pirate movies until Pirates. PotC is the ONLY place you can find that combination of action, comedy, pirates, mysticism, and drama on the planet. So when the fantastic original trilogy ended, people had a new itch they didn't have before, but nowhere to scratch it. They needed MORE Pirates. When no satisfying alternatives to Pirates showed up, PotC was forced to just keep making more to scratch that itch, and that rushed quality shows. Pirates of the Caribbean's downfall was being too good for its own good. Damn shame.
@@pabloelfunko913 Maybe this is more clear: I was annoyed that the protagonists weren't working together, but then realized they were being pirates and looking out for themselves, so they were true to their characters
@@B_Ahmed1234 Its actually kind of refreshing in contrast with most modern adventure movies like say the latest Pirates movie and even avengers past the first one, the mistrust and seriousness isn't around anymore. They are always already buddies that always have jokes. I like a good balance like we see here it makes for drawn out stories when people look out for themselves more and then make a choice when it matters.
for real though, why can't there be an american who narrate.. i'm not great at speaking english cuz i'm from norway but I guess for you that speak english it is not easy to understand this finnish guy...
That's why Elizabeth was kind of boring and useless near the end of the film... she had no reason to go after the chest because.... **puts on shades** her heart just wasn't in it. YYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH
Just goes to show a simple plot can still be good with good writing. "Get the key, then get the chest" is a video-game level story structure, but if you get it right, it still shines.
Shame video game movies stink generally. Also destroys the misconception they cannot be adapted well. You just need people who can build up characters around the plot, and also won't worry too much about being faithful to the games, which are en entirely different medium. The feelings you have when playing a game do not translate onto movies well. That i will admit.
just notice that in second film when Will finds Sparrow and put a sword on his shoulder Jack back then he hears a calling of his "talar"(it was after a chase of wild ppl)... just watch this scene and listen carefully
Tbh it is really nice and refreshing seeing praise going to a Pirates movie that isn't the first one and since this is my favourite out of the bunch I am so glad you decided to randomly make and upload this.
Agreed! It's so nice seeing the pirate movies getting recognition, especially not just the first one AND not just the great performances. Although I also find UA-cam very lacking in praise for Davy Jones...Still, I feel like just the fact that a third movie in a trilogy based on one movie that got insanely popular as the first POTC did, surprising even the studio, created with no original plan to continue the completed and very contained story, and the sequels made solely to capitalize on the money...actually managed to come out good? Like, think of any actually decent third movie in a trilogy...it's almost certainly gonna be based on a book. The fact that they stuck the landing at all in this current movie landscape is honestly a fucking miracle in my eyes! (see the subsequent sequels after this one as a perfect example of what could have happened from the get 😒.) Thanks to him for coveting this! Filmento is one of the few creators where often just the titles excite me the moment I see the video pop up on my feed! 😊 [enter comment cliche: never clicked on a video so fast.]
Elizabeth is not an unmemorable passive passenger: She’s the only person who found the chest She wanted to find the chest to save Will because she thought he was held captive on the Dutchman. She had to fight off Jones’ crew to keep the chest which will help them escape She was disarmed so she can’t participate in a sword fight neither did she want to She is the only main character that commits crimes (armed robbery/stowaway/murder) to achieve her goals and completes her arc in becoming a pirate by finally betraying someone.
@Oskar Ryberg There never was a love triangle.... She explicitly rejects Jack's advances at least three times before she betrays him because her only goal in the entire movie was to reunite with Will/save their lives. When she used the compass, she even said Jack wasn't what she wanted most because the movie had shown every previous choice she made was because she loved Will: she escaped prison, stole the pardons, stowed away, tricked sailors, and joined Jack's crew to find/save Will. Jack treated her like a sex object because thats his character, but he never demonstrated he loved her in any way. He only hit on her because he was trying to take advantage of her situation. This whole love triangle criticism isn't supported by anything in these movies until the final scene of DMC and the beginning of ATW. Even then, its only used to challenge the relationship of Will and Elizabeth. She isn't sexualized. Unless you count cleavage in the first one, she's never depicted in provocative or revealing clothing. She wears men's clothes, baggy disguises, and battle armor in these movies. The only exception is maybe the scene in Sao Feng's lair. There isn't a single close up of any part of her body except for her leg. No character sexualizes her besides Sao Feng because he thinks she is a goddess. Norrington doesn't, Will doesn't, Beckett doesn't, Gibbs doesn't, etc... To each their own, but I really don't see how you think she isn't written as a strong woman. In the trilogy, she has clearly defined traits revealed through her actions: she's a tricky, deceptive, stealthy, brave, and ruthless. She has actual agency in all three films. She fought pirates on land and sea before Will, the best swordsman in the franchise, trained her in combat. She completes her character arc from being a moral, naive aristocrat to an immoral, ruthless pirate when she betrays Jack to save herself. Yet, she feels so guilty that she is the only character in AWE that didn't rescue Jack to use him for another purpose, but to alleviate the guilt she was suffering. A guilt that had ruined her relationship with Will. The same character who was forced to attend upper-class ceremonies in the first movie was rallying and leading the last surviving pirates in a final battle to prevent genocide in the third movie. Thats one hell of a transformation. On top of that, she suffered in that journey as her father and good friend were murdered and Will was condemned to eternity at sea.
@@ogge9304 yea she definitely is somewhat conflicted in how she feels about Jack in DMC. However, thats because as a character, she is maturing. What I think is the most interesting thing about her is who she is as a woman, which is evident in scenes depicting her sexual awakening. Basically, because she doesn't become a pirate until the end of DMC, she upholds her morality as part of her identity as a British aristocrat. She's waiting until marriage to be intimate with Will. However, because her wedding was ruined, she has to wait although she is a maturing young woman. The movie constantly alludes to this because thats why she robbed Beckket because he ruined "her wedding night," not "wedding day," by imprisoning her. Thats why she said "if it weren't for the prison, she'd have Will." Thats why she said she's "so ready to be married" to Jack who attempted to "marry her" on the stairs. Thats why when he hits on her, despite her rejection/fidelity to Will, she's charmed by Jack's terms of "persuading her." Jack knows what she really wants and is offering himself to give it to her. However, she remains loyal to Will because she loves him. Her being on the beach with Will in AWE is actually deserved because they finally consummated their marriage that had been denied to them in DMC. To me, this perspective is just really unique because Elizabeth is dealing with aspects of life that every man and woman experience. She does explain in AWE she kept sacrificing Jack a secret because it was a burden she only wanted to be responsible for. She alone wanted to be responsible for his death. So, she didn't want to put that burden of killing Jack on anyone else, including Will because she only betrayed him to save Will's life and her own from the Kraken. She doesn't want any crew member to be responsible because they are all like him or are loyal to him. Either way, she wasn't going to tell them she betrayed and murdered their captain. If she could get away with it, she will and she did so by concocting a story that makes Jack honorable. However, Elizabeth not telling Will was actually her main character flaw coming to fruition, being her constant lying. Her imperfection is she is a liar, which constantly has negatively affected her interactions with other characters, but mainly with Will because she can't be trusted. As a result, this flaw endangers herself and causes a lot of harm for her and other characters throughout this trilogy. Thats an impactful character flaw because it causes Will to doubt her love for him and not trust her. In turn, this substantially affects their love, which is central to both of their characters because their romance personifies one of the major themes of these movies, being love. Thats why the end of AWE is so awesome because Elizabeth is finally able to overcome her flaw by being trustworthy enough to Will when he requests she keep his heart/chest safe, which affirms their love for one another. Thats why Jones and Calypso's relationship failed. Its a nice contrast. So yeah it is a love triangle from one character's perspective, but its utilized to develop Elizabeth, challenge both her and Will's relationship, and arises naturally from the circumstances in the plot. I dunno, I just don't see it as drama for drama's sake. She's forced to strip down twice....., by Sao Feng's crew and Barbossa, so I dunno about many times. However, she's a woman that exists in a world of pirates, who are murdering rapists and thieves. Being one of the few woman in such an environment, which is historically accurate, this makes sense since these movies are earnest in their storytelling. Even then, she holds her own. I mean she was going to cut a man's throat for threatening/insulting her, stabbed Barbossa, and fought off Sao Feng. She has to hold her own otherwise she couldn't become pirate or be in a pirate crew. She only uses her sexuality to manipulate Jack because she knows that will actually affect him. She's tricking him by using his own tactics against him, which he pays the price for. I really don't see her doing that anywhere else besides with Sao Feng on his ship, which I think is probably the most uncalled for example of this. She definitely doesn't use her sexuality against Barbossa or his crew, Beckett, Davy Jones, Norrington, Jack's crew. I just think she's really well written.
Was just thinking this as I saw the members of Davy Jone's crew. That must've taken so much manpower and effort to dress up all those people, have unique art designs for every member, and add in the additional CGI to some of the members. It's really hard to think of many films that have had this much production put into them. Probably just LoTR trilogy.
Don’t need Barbossa when you have a larger-than-life menacing yet heartfelt character like Davy Jones. Dead Man’s Chest is the best film of the trilogy.
Barbossa in Chest would have been terrible. You can't just go from being the Big Bad of CotBP to being a supporting "good" character without making it feel like your standard anime villain. What they did instead was genius, they established not one, but two big threads who joined forces at the end - and _then_ teased Barbossas return for the next movie. They had the balls to leave a great character alone for a while and it was brilliant.
@@Nejvyn And in the third movie, Barbossa was, Barbossa. Instead of him being a big bad, he's saving jack because Jack is important and needed at this time. Meanwhile, Jack still has the one thing Barbossa wants, the Pearl, so he's constantly fighting to get it back. even once Jack and Barbossa are both in the picture, they still work opposingly and not sportingly. He is te same character from the first movie with a few changes, likely a result of being alive again. If Barbosa was in the second movie, he'd just kill jack to get to the chest immediately, no games. Barbossa knows what the compus is, he knows that's all he would need.
Not to mention that one of the members with a hammerhead has not two eyes nor one eye nor even four eyes (a couple (except it’s actually one) like a human and the other couple like a hammerhead shark), but THREE! What other character has three eyes, and in the same way as Maccus!
I think Elizabeth's story in Dead Man's chest was not forgettable. I feel like her character bloomed by the final act of the film. That betrayal scene with the kiss really shocked me. This showed me that she is a character that you can't underestimate. Ever since the first film, she wanted to be with the pirates, by the end of the second film, she became one.
It's actually explained right after it's said. "One, because it's a vile drink that turns even the most resepctable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal (the smoke) is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out there looking for me do you think there is even the slightest chance they wont see it?" And then the royal navy saves them :D
@@cyrus9074 Not really, he was conflicted about his feelings with/for Elizabeth, who literally becomes one of the Pirate Lords (later Pirate Queen) that Beckett wants dead. He's fine with fighting and killing Jack and Will because they both caused his downward spiral in the second movie, but it was Elizabeth - the woman he actually gave a damn about - that he couldn't let die.

Kinda just tossed him away like he wasn't at all important.
Man, this video made me realize just how underrated Dead Man's Chest is. People often talk about the first one for its ingenuity and the third one for its massive scale, but I guess they forgot about how emotionally charged and high-stakes the second movie was. I think the comparisons to Infinity War are pretty spot on too, and - with that in mind - it makes me appreciate the second movie a whole lot more.
The discussion of plot with Shia annoyed me. If character is key and plot unimportant then why not just point the camera and let the actors interact? It’s because plot REVEALS character. Character is not revealed just by watching people eat dinner and go to work. We understand characters through motivations, values, etc. I can see why actors might say that but storytelling is what it’s all about and plot is central to storytelling.
@Morris Yes! But only if that is specificly done for character building and it's coherent with their personality. Otherwise it's worthless and/or stupid. Like the Grinch in the 2018 movie moves hyperactively even though grumpy people move slowly and bowed.
Davy Jones intro is outright amazing and seeing Bill Nighy doing his wierd sounds and emotions are one of the greatest moments of these films. Hell even when he was Victor in Underworld he Nighys it up and makes his character unforgettable even if hes only a small part in one of the (six?) films
Bill Nighy is actually in two of the Underworld films (unless I'm forgetting another one. I haven't watched those in ages). He was in the first one where his part was indeed relatively small and he's also in that prequel one (I think it was called "Rise of the Lycans") with that medieval setting where his role is a little bigger.
Elizabeth may not have been the best character, but you gotta give her credit, as the final decision at the end of the climax is down to her. It was her choice to leave Jack on the Pearl. Also, her motive was to save Will, and Jack uses Elizabeth to find the chest. There is literally a scene where Jack asks her if getting the chest is what she wants most, and she says yes
Because it's long? Because it's epic? Because it's got a giant battle at the end, that's followed by a fantastic conclusion? Those are some very superficial traits.
@@cinemamonkey8137 I wasn't trying to be rude, I just wanted to ask if it's just because of those things. Your comparison of the two movies might be really interesting.
@@franciscorendon2783 oh sorry , i misunderstood, i feel that both endgame and at worlds end use the finale treatment in a way that affects the characters in a good way, like by the end of at worlds end you feel like the characters have really grown up, also the battle banter and the way the movie paces itself is very similar to endgames
I’ll never forget the scene in At World’s End when Davy Jones’ heart is stabbed and the way his tentacles twitch, how realistic that looks…. That one second of film blows my mind
The movie was fine and the plot was made very well. But idk there was just something off about it for me. Idk if its actors (all tho they are acting well the characters seems off and davy jones was fantastic). The first was just amazing and sadly none of the others were able to touch it
The things that the critics criticised about Dead Man's Chest was that the plot was convoluted (which I strongly disagree with and Filmento proves my point) and that the movie was too long (which I don't really agree with either). Funnily enough, even tho Infinity War got much more positive reviews than Dead Man's Chest, the critics also criticised Infinity War. The film was criticised for relying on the previous MCU movies for its story. That to me makes no sense because when Endgame dropped in theatres the critics praised the movie for the culmination for its 22 movies story. I mean WHAT? So you didn't like how Infinity War was relying on all of the previous MCU movies to work, but when Endgame is released you're praising it for relying on the exact same thing that you criticised about the previous film?
@@antonak4763 I've noticed these contradictions too with IF and Endgame. A lot of critics give reviews to please their audience and that was fairly obvious with Endgame reviews. It's not a stronger movie in several aspects, it's even longer, everybody needed a time travel explanation even when the film tried to explain it, and much of the film suffers because I believe there is no intense urgency like there is in almost every other Marvel movie. The world doesn't need to be returned to normal NOW, it's just that Ant-man popped up again and they have a means to attempt a reverse whenever they feel like it. It's definitely more driven by plot than character, and the movie is so big that only Natasha and Tony get big character defining moments. There is some stuff with Thor, but everybody else is along for the ride. And alt Thanos' motivations do not feel NEARLY as strong as IF Thanos, which is strange since they both have the same end goal. And Thanos' motivations is really what made IF one of the best in the franchise.
Tres Cohen I felt the same way when I watched it in theaters, but upon rewatch, literally everything is improved from the first one. The sets, the cgi, the locations, the fight choreography, the music, the props, the creativity are all better and the characters actually developed. Then it ends with a great cliffhanger. 2 and 3 aren’t masterpieces but they definitely don’t deserve the hate they get.
I mean, what movies have a good plot twist The Boy’s plot twist was bad and the only good plot twist I know is from that movie about the kid who says “i see dead people”
I’m so damn happy to see I’m not the only one who thinks this trilogy is underrated af. And Davy Jones is imo one of the best movie villains out there.
Dead Man's Chest does what Infinity War does, but so much better simply because you don't even notice how it keeps telling the story from so many different perspectives and does it so effortlessly.
8:49 "well again his heart is in it, and a bunch of people want to stabs it" I don't know if you mean to make this a joke or not, but I'm laughing at it.
Oh god, I really loved Davy Jones mostly because of the actor and the how likeable of a villain he was... Not so many people are talking about this character enough
I would really like to see your take on LOTR on its mistakes and/or brilliance. I checked if you had released a video about it but it appears not so I am leaving this comment. I hope you consider making a video on LOTR.
It’s their choices that define their character, and you need the plot for that! It’s like a video game really. That’s why ultimately games are more exciting, and game film will never be as good as playing the game where YOU are in the hot seat in the roller coaster making decisions.
I remember watching these movies when I was much younger and had trouble following plots of movies at all, but I remember always being able to understand the plot of these movies very clearly.
This is why the first Trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean is Masterpiece. It's fun and overly fun sometimes, but there are important elements everywhere and they used all of them well. It should be used as video-assay of how to make perfect movie.
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out. I was 10 years old and it still stands as the greatest cinema experience I've ever had. I was completely blown away by the aesthetics, the vibe and the graphics... Davy Jones looked and still looks incredible! I really hope that Disney brings back Gore Verbinski to direct one last Pirates of the Caribbean movie with the original cast. he seems to have been the one who understood the Jack Sparrow character most and also knew how to create that distinct feel that first trilogy had. It just hasn't been the same since he left the ship...
When you said «if you dont understand the plot then the problem is with you» i could relate so much. I watched this when i was around 6years and could close to no english and definatly didn’t read subtitles fast enough but i still understood everything.
It's good to see others giving Pirates 2 and 3 the attention and praise they deserve. The first three are among my favorite all time movies, and I think the sequels' dark, offbeat tones turned off a lot of critics and audiences. But now when compared to the modern film market, those movies seem fresh and exciting and revolutionary by comparison. Great video.
For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with. Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free. And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! :/ The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better. Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will. She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3! As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies. Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1?? As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die.. Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth. Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈 when Will challenging Davy Jones. Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key? Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏 As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
This will always be my favourite movie of the franchise because they act like, well, pirate. They betray each other, they all have their own goals and don't care about the others. There's also a ton of different characters interactions and really good fight coreographies. And it has a plot twist (Jack loses) but doesn't leave you with a big cliffhanger, it's more like a to be continued (It's revealed they can save him and then Barbossa appears) And also it has the best version of Norrington
I am a HUGE POTC fan, and this was absolutely incredible. Fantastically written, incredibly well researched, and you put to words exactly what makes this franchise to incredible and overlooked. Very well done!
Elizabeth Swann: forgettable character in Dead Man's Chest, fantastic heroine in At The World's End (Wow, just like Steve Rogers in Infinity War and Endgame!). Perfectly balance, as all things should be
FoxyWhite why, because he actually took his well deserved retirement and chance to live his life? Because he didn’t give the shield to Bucky, who probably didn’t want it anyway?
Sauron I'm talking about "the second movie", not "later". Though she's not even that unmemorable in the second, just almost irrelevant. Good thing the third movie did her more justice
13 years later and the CGI for Davy Jones is still one of the best examples of CGI in film ever. The detail, movement and lighting is so realistic it’s astounding. They managed to put real depth and sorrow into the squid faced villain. Bill Nighy is a legend.
I honestly think everything you said here applies to a even greater extent in At Worlds End. At World End is one of the best films ever. Dead Mans Chest sets up that fantastic film. Everything you said here works EVEN better in that film. AWE is great at doing a huge story, and combining all the plots them at the end for a fantastic finally. The CGI is even better in AWE. 👍 At least that’s my opinion. ( Honestly if the PotC movies came out today they would be even higher then they were. Everyone would be watching them.)
Imagine if Jack went after the trident instead "HEY DAVY JONES I GOT THE TRIDENT THAT CONTROLD THE SEA" "WHAT I NEVER KNEW THAT" *SPRAYS HIM WITH THE FORCE OF A TRILLION TIDES*
People can say what they want about the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films but I don’t care. They’re amazing and the series should’ve ended with At Worlds End. That beach scene with Will and Elizabeth was perfect in every way and nobody can convince me otherwise
Morris They have the good guys lose to raise the stakes and for them to learn. The whole part of a Heroes Journey is for them at some point to lose so that they can win the next time. I’m amazed that you don’t get basic storytelling 101.
Morris lol kid? I’m pretty sure you’re the only child here since you wanna be a little bitch about it. Listen how old are you kid? Cause you can’t be an adult and be this dumb. What you said makes no sense and I literally just explained basic storytelling to you. But it seems you’re too dumb to even get that lol
This was very helpful! I've been working on a story, but have been struggling to build my plot organically. I love how you simplified the tactics used to create suspenseful and engaging stories to GSU. Thank you! I can't wait to dive back into my story and improve my plot.
This is so beautifully done. As a die-hard fan of the first three films it's wonderful to see someone discussing this one which is surprisingly a lot of people's least favorite one.
honestly this video is one of the best advice ever to write a good story, you literally have a step by step on great plot that keeps people interested. thank you
i really must to thank u filmento since i started watching you my way of watching a movie has changed you make the people watch smarter and not just watch whatever it is (technically knowing why the film is great makes the movie greater in your eyes)
Davy Jones is still one of my favorite villains ever thanks to the fantastic writing, Bill Nighy's performance and even the CGI that still looks good to this day.
Great video, unfortunately these movies don't get enough love. However I gotta say this video did Davy Jones no justice. He doesn't simply want the chest because he wants to protect his heart from being stabbed, he wants to remain free. He's not just a great villain because of his presence and personality, he's a perfect one because he isn't a generic antagonist that's bad because the plot needs him to be. He's a corrupted man that simply wants to be free from humanity and the pains of love. His story about being so heart broken he cuts out his heart is an amazing arc unseen by most villains. His choices and motives are complex and sympathetic, even more so than Thanos in my opinion. I feel like this needed mentioned because this movie, this series, would be so much poorer if villains like Barbosa and Jones weren't as good as they are.
@Logan Legend The problem is Disney itself these days. They dont have so many ideas, and less interesting plot or character-developement. They are just aiming to earn money on easy ways, but without much effort. They are good in creating hype for their movies. but not at making perfect movies anymore. Also they dont make more new Swashbuckling movies, wich would be nice to see these days, because except Pirates of the Carribbean we dont have other Pirate Movies since the last 15 Years. Also CGI is cheaper for them. I personally love Marvel, but Endgame was weak mix compared to Invinity War (and especially to its comic origin) and some of the standalone MCU-Movies. Also Avengers are only that successful, because of Marvel Ideas / work not because of Disney.
A great video! Dead Man's Chest was literally my favourite film when I was a kid. I love when smart film people analyze what makes my favourite movies so good.

You sound annoyingly Finnish.
I still can’t believe how good davy jones looks, after 13 years it is still incredible
@@helixplays5190 tbh davy jones looks basically just as good as thanos, maybe even better.
ZHL242 Gollum doesn’t even look good anymore. I watched “the two towers” and I was like damn he kinda looks like shit

Damn shame.

Tbh it is really nice and refreshing seeing praise going to a Pirates movie that isn't the first one and since this is my favourite out of the bunch I am so glad you decided to randomly make and upload this.
Same here!
(see the subsequent sequels after this one as a perfect example of what could have happened from the get 😒.)
Thanks to him for coveting this! Filmento is one of the few creators where often just the titles excite me the moment I see the video pop up on my feed! 😊 [enter comment cliche: never clicked on a video so fast.]
I found World's End a bit better than this one, myself, as there was less chaotic running around, a larger final battle, and more character stuff.
I agree 100% this is one of my favorite all time movies
Can I say "same" even if pirates 1 2 3 are my favorites ?
Elizabeth is not an unmemorable passive passenger:
She’s the only person who found the chest
She wanted to find the chest to save Will because she thought he was held captive on the Dutchman.
She had to fight off Jones’ crew to keep the chest which will help them escape
She was disarmed so she can’t participate in a sword fight neither did she want to
She is the only main character that commits crimes (armed robbery/stowaway/murder) to achieve her goals and completes her arc in becoming a pirate by finally betraying someone.
YES! I loved Elizabeth Swan as a child, she was great. Even in the first film she was pretty active within the plot, especially given the time period.
@JB There is so much more to her character too. Upon rewatch, she is really well written in a lot of ways in this trilogy
Still annoying, though. She had a lot to work with as a character, but they could have at least not made her annoying.

Only problem with Dead Mans Chest: A massive lack of Barbossa
Barbossa was probably too busy becoming a wealthy privateer for the British Navy.
Don’t need Barbossa when you have a larger-than-life menacing yet heartfelt character like Davy Jones. Dead Man’s Chest is the best film of the trilogy.
@@makadray while davy jones was great, i stuck around for Barbossa
“Why are we escaping a cannibal island? *Oh yeah, the chest.”*

Is not a perfect plot because it has never anwered the long standing question of...
Why is the rum gone?
Elizabeth
Try walking in a straight line. Then you’ll find out Why its gone
Jack actually answers that question very early in the movie... "Oh, that's why"
It's actually explained right after it's said. "One, because it's a vile drink that turns even the most resepctable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal (the smoke) is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out there looking for me do you think there is even the slightest chance they wont see it?"
And then the royal navy saves them :D
Noelle but where is rum?
I loved Norrington in this, the third one really did him dirty
He was a broken ex-military, almost pirate in the second one. And third one all the sudden he's a naive/stupid officer.
Yeah I that's probably my biggest complaint about the Trilogy.
so it would seam.
Fun fact: You don’t see davy jones on screen until exactly 1 hour into the movie
So they put him in the first 20% of the film, that's not too bad...
A great decision. Really allows the movie to build up.
I love that kind of like Syndrome but he was at the start but then came back in the second half
One thing pirates always did superb on was build the villains up with scary stories & talked them up
Man, this video made me realize just how underrated Dead Man's Chest is.
Seeing Norrington with a beard was enough to make me look up who played him to make sure it wasn’t actually Chris Evans in disguise
Don't take it too seriously, I mean... we both heard what he said. Makes no sense.
Yeah made no sense
Actually you, in fact, can learn about the characters just going to work or eating dinner. It has done before, actually.
@Morris Yes! But only if that is specificly done for character building and it's coherent with their personality. Otherwise it's worthless and/or stupid. Like the Grinch in the 2018 movie moves hyperactively even though grumpy people move slowly and bowed.
There is a reason Shia is an actor and not a director
He had some flashback scenes in 2 actually, but those maxed out at like 5 min.

Still the critic ripped it appart. It was a really enjoyable movie.

The first three pirates of the Caribbean movies doesn't get enough love. They are quite good
I remember watching these movies when I was much younger and had trouble following plots of movies at all, but I remember always being able to understand the plot of these movies very clearly.

Verbinskin does have a certain style, doesn't he? And I found Lone Ranger pretty good, too...
so, basically:
Goal: What do we want?
Stakes: What'll happen if we don't get it?
Urgency: How long do we have?
when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
The Curse of the Black Pearl = Dead Man's Chest
@@fabricioantonio5882 you’re talking about yourself right?!
This will always be my favourite movie of the franchise because they act like, well, pirate. They betray each other, they all have their own goals and don't care about the others. There's also a ton of different characters interactions and really good fight coreographies. And it has a plot twist (Jack loses) but doesn't leave you with a big cliffhanger, it's more like a to be continued (It's revealed they can save him and then Barbossa appears)
And also it has the best version of Norrington
4:56 - "Davey Jones wants the chest because, uh, his heart is in it." I see what you did there. xD
its great to see this series getting more love.
I will say that Pirates of the Carribbean Dead Man's chest has they best epilogue in any movies.
"So tell me... What's become of my ship"
Funinightmare *apple crunch*
Eh I mean "oh look that character isn't dead" has only been done like 50000 times.
Yes
It's one of the best endings ever.... but nothing touches The Dark Knight ending
@@MrMrjack18 nothing ever will
the 3-way sword fight and its kicked-off is just so incredibly well written and done! especially because every protagonist motive is relatable
3:13- I love this moment. I like to wave at it as it passes by.
Perfectly balance, as all things should be
Endgame threw a nuke on years of character development on Steve's part. It did him dirtier than I've ever seen.
FoxyWhite explain?
@@foreverdead1248 How?
FoxyWhite why, because he actually took his well deserved retirement and chance to live his life? Because he didn’t give the shield to Bucky, who probably didn’t want it anyway?
@FoxyWhite Infinity War did him dirty, but I was very satisfied with him in Endgame. I dunno what you are talking about mate
I've been saying Dead Man's Chest is arguably best film in the POTC series for years and this video firmly backs my statement!
I dare say that Elizabeth is memorable, since she has a great many lovely moments.
Sauron Well she is, but she indeed kinda unmemorable in the second movie
@@day8361 Would you say so? I think she becomes more memorable later.
Sauron I'm talking about "the second movie", not "later". Though she's not even that unmemorable in the second, just almost irrelevant. Good thing the third movie did her more justice
@@day8361 everyone has their own opinion.
Sauron yeah
13 years later and the CGI for Davy Jones is still one of the best examples of CGI in film ever. The detail, movement and lighting is so realistic it’s astounding. They managed to put real depth and sorrow into the squid faced villain. Bill Nighy is a legend.
“Ok take the chest and make Jones release your dad, then call off the kraken and we’ll call it even.”
*Directed by Gore Verbinski*
the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies were so good OMG
I honestly think everything you said here applies to a even greater extent in At Worlds End. At World End is one of the best films ever. Dead Mans Chest sets up that fantastic film. Everything you said here works EVEN better in that film. AWE is great at doing a huge story, and combining all the plots them at the end for a fantastic finally. The CGI is even better in AWE. 👍 At least that’s my opinion. ( Honestly if the PotC movies came out today they would be even higher then they were. Everyone would be watching them.)
Always loved the first three Pirates films.

What is your name???
THE CHEST!!!
Honestly you're an example of a perfect UA-camr
These movies are criminally underated.
Exactly!!
I have never clicked on a notification any faster. Thank you for this gem, Filmento.
Imagine if Jack went after the trident instead
"HEY DAVY JONES I GOT THE TRIDENT THAT CONTROLD THE SEA"
"WHAT I NEVER KNEW THAT"
*SPRAYS HIM WITH THE FORCE OF A TRILLION TIDES*
People can say what they want about the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films but I don’t care. They’re amazing and the series should’ve ended with At Worlds End. That beach scene with Will and Elizabeth was perfect in every way and nobody can convince me otherwise
OMG YESSS!!! THAT ENDING MADE ME CRY!!! 1-3 Was and is the original story!! ☠️☠️☠️
Did this guy really turn the most hated thumbnail in his channel into a merch? Legend
Empire Strikes Back
Infinity War
Deadman’s Chest
The Dark Knight
Movies where the hero falls and villain wins are always the best.
Morris not really.
These movies are one of the best movies ever !!!
This was very helpful! I've been working on a story, but have been struggling to build my plot organically. I love how you simplified the tactics used to create suspenseful and engaging stories to GSU. Thank you! I can't wait to dive back into my story and improve my plot.
Thanks for reminding me how much I love this movie!
What I love most about these movies is How Gibbs always vocally propels and explains the plot.
This is so beautifully done. As a die-hard fan of the first three films it's wonderful to see someone discussing this one which is surprisingly a lot of people's least favorite one.
The problem with the stakes is that ending Piracy is arguably a good thing.
Fuck yeah. This film is great. Best of the series.
Yes exactly my favorite movie of all time!!!!
Dead Man's Chest is so underrated.
Facts!
I always laugh when Jack says hide the rum to Gibbs when Elizabeth comes aboard
honestly this video is one of the best advice ever to write a good story, you literally have a step by step on great plot that keeps people interested. thank you
This man does not get enough credit for his analyses
Dead Mans Chest is my favorite movie of all time, it is so damn good. Davy Jones is of the best villains ever imo
I'm very glad to hear that ! Dead Man's chest is so underrated... it's near perfect movie and one the best movies ever !
everyones hearts were in it,one just had a bigger stake,to not get staked
Man, times have changed. I remember, when Pirate movies 2 and 3 came out, they were trashed and called bad films.
i really must to thank u filmento since i started watching you my way of watching a movie has changed you make the people watch smarter and not just watch whatever it is (technically knowing why the film is great makes the movie greater in your eyes)
I remember loosing my shit as a kid when Barbossa came down the stairs. He was always my favorite in the franchise
Finally, someone who appreciates these movies as much as I do! Love your clear analysis, Filmento!
And that's how filmento makes a great video
Honestly Dead Man's Chest is a better movie than Endgame
@Logan Legend if potc weren't Disney I think potc 6 and so on would've been made without firing depp tbh
Why is no one talking about
“I don’t give a rats...winkle doodle.”
Can I just say that I love the original Pirates of the Caribbean and I am here for the appreciation of it
A great video! Dead Man's Chest was literally my favourite film when I was a kid. I love when smart film people analyze what makes my favourite movies so good.
