R.I.P.D - The Worst Blockbuster Movie You've Never Heard Of | Anatomy Of A Failure

- R.I.P.D. is a 2013 wannabe summer blockbuster turned box office flop starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges that competes for the title of one of the worst studio movies ever made along with the likes of Gods of Egypt and Artemis Fowl and Green Lantern. And most of all, it's a movie you won't remember seeing -- which is weird because it features multiple distinct high-concept elements as the likes of Inception and Men In Black. So how come high-conceptual elements like such can just be forgotten? In today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's try to find out.

Why do u feel bad 🙄

There is no reason to feel bad for enjoying a movie. I liked it as well, never considered it more than 90 minutes of craziness and that works fine for me. All movies dont need to be deep, serious, masterworks of digital art,... or any thing else you can think of within 30 seconds i needed to write this sentence. Sometimes you can even appreciate films for what they are NOT. Yes, this isnt a typical blockbuster. Thats why I remember it.
I love your analysis on why certain movies don't work and what would improve them because a lot of your pointers help me out massively in getting ideas to improve my own work
Think it would of been memorable if the monsters/dead looked like entities related to death like banshee's, phantoms, wraiths etc
Cause it just comes off as MIB clone but with C list creature designs.
Or like a revenant, brought back by anger
I think it'd be cool if the look related to their death at least. Like if they looked like a rotted body and not just a monster. Like if they drowned they could be all bloated or if they got shot they still have the bullet holes. Idk.
Ryan Reynolds looks like this is the walk-through take, stand here, walk here, stop here and look up.

the big problem is that the comic book really has nothing to do with the movie which they changed to be like Men In Black
the concept was fresh so I remembered it pretty well, also the chemistry between the actors were so good
I still remember Swordfish slow motion scene. It was really cool.
The problem is, Both R.I.P.D. and M.I.B. are based on comic book properties, they are both twists on buddy cop films, both have way too many similarities, so in R.I.P.D. they did things differently from M.I.B. to avoid being compared to it, but ultimately it was unavoidable.
I love Filmento's ability to criticize a film while also offering ways to improve it.
Also, he genuinely seems like a guy who would like the movies he reviews to be better, and not as something to point the finger at and laugh.
@@elpretender1357, not really.
All he did was criticize a movie that is like Men In Black for not being MORE like Men In Black. If this movie became as memorable as he wanted it to be, it'd just be remembered as a Men In Black rip-off and nothing else.
I remember one time he criticized the starwars movies (disney trilogy) and offer some improvements, which the creators actually took in consideration and applied them... and it still was shit...lol he felt so bad
@@robokou idk if you actually watched the whole video but he doesn't say this movie should be more men in black, he's using MIB as an example of better ways they could've written certain scenes. He also gives examples of how to improve scenes without referencing MIB later on in the video.
@@somemysteriousguy7114, I admit that I did make that reply without watching the video in it's entirety, and upon doing so I mostly agree with what he's saying now. 💯
But I still definitely disagree with the idea of it being a terrible film though. It was entertaining to say the least.
What he describes happened to me, it pop up in my streaming services and I was like "oh sounds like a nice concept, will watch" then I realize scenes are very familiar and realized I already watched it before
The scene where Nick gets hit by the car could have been:
*gets hit*
"H-hey, I'm alive... I'm still ALIVE!!.... Oh.. wait. Crap." As the realization hits that he's truly dead and then Roy can walk over to help him up saying, "Yep, there's a first time for everyone after crossing the threshold. And that there was yours. Still as dead as dead, kid, but we just keep kicking."
Just some positive reaction and then that crestfallen moment when reality strikes because it failed to do anything. And then you could see moments later where there are either news articles or footage of the asian guy eating pavement because of the car. Yet he just gets up and walks it off and everyone is left wondering who this invincible or impossibly lucky individual is. Some kind of logical consequence and emotional reaction to it.
If you’re ever looking for a fun drinking game take a shot every time Filmento says “high conceptual”

It would've been much more emotionally hard hitting if the wife wanted him to keep the gold but he disagreed with her and it resulted in a big fight where he insults her and storms off to return it.
Not something that would show her as a bad person, just as a person who understands that money can lead to security. Considering he'd die the same night after storming off it'd make his need to see her again and speak with her again that much more meaningful because dying after a huge fight is the single worst way to go out on a loved one.
It would work better the other way around if you could weave in that it was the gold that was why he was killed.
Then you immediately divide the audience, why tf would you do that in a comedy?

True
Wow, learnt so much from this!
You're right. I knew I saw this years ago, but until recently, I couldn't remember a single thing about it.
I just realized something... With the height difference of Ryan Reynolds to his "old Chinese man" disguise... What is going on with the eye levels when he's talking to living people such as his wife? Who are they looking at up there at the 6 foot tall range if they're not actually seeing Ryan?
i hate that in all those body switching movies where the person is taller or shorter, or even a different sex and the people they are talking to acts like they are talking to the "real" person. VERY bad directors to miss a simple action
idk man don't think about it
I assume he got a healthy dose of "My eyes are up here" moments.
Also, Jeff Bridges is a blonde woman wearing a form-fitting dress. So what does it look like when he pulls out a shotgun or takes off his hat? If he puts his hat on the table, is it just an invisible hat? What do people see? Such questions are more interesting than the film itself.

this is like MIB: International all over again, except the protagonist is more bearable
The protag is much, much more bearable, which moves the movie from a disaster to a plothole-filled fun experience that you just gotta turn your brain off for. It's why some comics can survive on basically charisma/delivery alone

So, once more, with passion:
Premise doesn't matter, execution does.
they both matter...
There's an amateur-ish manga about a rock paper scissors tournament...
It has one of the best set up and writing of all short stories I've ever seen because it was executed perfectly.
Title is "Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors" if you feel like looking it up. For context, it's literally a rock paper scissors tournament but with a supernatural twist, a ton of set up, and a few entertaining twists on how the characters use everything to try and win.
Star Wars prequels were like that too.
There were definitely interesting elements in their premise, but the execution of every idea involved was such a constant ebb and flow of "why?" that the movies got exponentially worse.

this plot sounds more suited to an anime than a hollywood blockbuster
The whole concept reminds me of an anime called “Drifters”, where famous historical figures get sent to a fantasy world to fight hordes of monsters after their death.
And, tbh, it is so entertaining. Especially watching a pilot knocking down dragons.
How, is like saying it would be more suited for a stop motion movie, anime isn't a genre or anything like that, it's literally just a animation style that comes from an specific country, now I understand you're no serious but I had to let that out a shit ton of people do the same mistake, like people who don't like anime's plots, there isn't any, it's a style, the plot has nothing to do with the style but the writer, you can dislike i don't care, but at least give a good reason or admit you have none and move on.

...my Favorite Part of Filmento Videos is Not Only the Critique of WHY Specific Narrative Elements Don't Work Well in a Movie, but the Multiple Creative Solutions as to HOW they Could Have Worked Better...
The Tom Cruise, “…you’re stepping over the line” clip was used to perfection - I audibly laughed!
I recall in school, later in school, during a finals week, somebody randomly got a projector and played it on a wall in the cafeteria area.
Axe kick you in the back of the head
Oh yeah! Back when Jeff Bridges was trying to cash in his final couple movie performances
Weird because youre right. I remember watching this movie but i don't remember anything about it. All i remember is that they're ghost police. I can't even remember Ryan Reynolds being the main dude.
I remember watching this with my grandpa and we had a good time, then again we're not critical at all so we were just glad there was something on tv lol
Speaking of failures. You should do a video on Eragon.
How bout max steel

They did my boy wrong so fucking wrong
@@barathrajkumar5564 no pls don't remind me that movie again! It was hella bad
MY reaction to the finale: "oh... another giant hole in the sky" haven't seen that a thousand times before...
Can't movie makers think of another way to do the world ending scene?
the Blue Beam of Doom
Nope, it's either a hole in the sky or a hole in the ground...
Can't have holes popping up from humans now, can we?💁
Well they only have 2 options, up hole or down hole...always a buthole tho :))
@@t-masterrules5085 warhammer be like
Maybe put the hole to the side instead of always up top idk 🤷🏽♂️
the Inception music really shows how unforgettable this movie *could* have been... and makes me wanna watch Inception again
Nice use of white bat audio for some of your music! I approve!
I'm just glad that Jeff Bridges was able to play Rooster Cogburn twice.
He's played him ever since.
Nick’s death could have resulted from a fight against Kevin Bacon’s character maybe after seeing he’s a dirty cop and gets killed because his bullets wouldn’t work on a deado.
Until I saw this video I was starting to doubt my own memory, because I was CERTAIN that I saw this movie in the theater with my husband, but he kept saying that he'd never seen it before when I pointed the movie out to him on Netflix so we could watch it again. Even after watching it together - for the second time! - he still couldn't remember seeing it before that day. And I have to say that even when I knew I'd watched it before, so many elements genuinely surprised me, because I could not for the life of me remember them. So this really answers that question and it has helped me settle the argument with my husband (muahahaha).
Me who enjoyed back in the day 👀
The curry scene is hilarious
Same 🤧
That really bothered me. The wife being so fucking goody two shoes and super dumb. The typical, I had a perfect wife who I cuddled with in our underwear and then she died of cancer, accident, or I died. Regardless, you’re separated and you realize how PERFECT she was 😭😭😭😭
At least when John Wick did the same thing with his wife, she barely had any scenes. Just that one phone video, a couple hospital shots, and that was it, so it didn't feel too cheesy. She was just there to die and everything we need to know about her is said through Wick's actions. Unlike this, where she is one of the key characters driving the plot
How is that bad?
@@tanner201x8 it’s bland and overdone she should be more like a human and not something for just I guess sex appeal or only to push the movie forward another form of something that is overdone and bland is born sexy yesterday basically the hot girl who is naive or behaves like a child and doesn’t understand certain things unless the male shows or does something
I saw this movie and like you I can't remember a single scene, even while watching this video. I don't think I've ever forgotten a movie as completely as this before, usually I at least somewhat recognize the scenes, it's just like I never saw it, it feels bizarre
Why have no youtubers ever heard of the word "probably?" All these "You've never seen this, never done that, never been here" things could be so much less annoying if they just add a probably. Guess it's not click-baity enough.
This man has never heard of hyperbole.
The premise of this film seems like it'd make a great series target than a film
Said like every modern production company with a dedicated streaming service. Like great just what we need... a concept that can't even carry itself convincingly for a 90 minute run time churned out and spread even thinner across 9 - 14 hours of drivel.
@@chriskelly4299the concept can absolutely carry an entire series. The movie just executes it poorly
