After my first few gigs I realised that less is more and also that the more minimal your setup the easier it is to move around and setup at a gig. With the Groovebox getting better and more complex this has helped me reduce my setup size and actually increase the amount of sounds I can play with Live. The hardware coming out now is freaking awesome! 👍😎

Excellent tutorial and performance again! The Elektron analog 4 MK2 and Rytm MK2 are coming my way. Looking forward to it. I like your bass sound of the model D. I have a Roland SE-02 which is capable of the same sounds. Next I will try to make such nice bass sound and melody like yours. Already used my TB-03 like you do - more as an addition to percussion in the background - and it's a great advice. I also followed some great tutorials on the SH-101 and JU-60 via UA-cam and now I know how to make to most out of my SH-01A and JU-06A. Yeah when I started out in 1990 I had two ensoniq mirages then later added a tr505, basstation and asrx pro. Now my gear is largely analog except for drums where I use the volca drum. My monologue xd can do both digital and analog.
Me neither. Until I had it happen at a Paradiso Amsterdam gig 5 mins before go time. All samples on my Octa for some reason had their start points altered (i had some Doepfer boxes sending out midi they were not supposed to). It was then I realised to not bet on unpredictable horses. I did a blinding set but was happy I had different things to fall back upon! Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for the great videos. I'm a new subscriber and have been trying to learn how to make Deep House music without using a DAW. I'm currently using the Teenage Engineering OP-Z and the Korg MS-20 Mini with a couple of effects pedals. I'm interested in learning more about your use of mixers/faders and why you use the Zoom L12 and the Novation LaunchControl XL together. I like the idea of a minimalist setup (maybe even battery operated) and I'd like to hear more about your choices and why. My research of the Zoom L12 lead me to the Tascam Model 12 that can double duty as a capable midi controller as well. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and hopefully an in-depth video! Cheers and please keep doing what you're doing!
As a follow up to my question... I found the answer in some of your other videos. I understand now that the MIDI controller allowed you to use a fader on a "track" for the kick drum where a mixer fader wouldn't allow you to do that and would take out the entire devices sound. Nice! I can do the same with the OP-Z since it uses tracks for each sound, but I also get your point about live performance and anticipating problems. If the OP-Z stops for some reason - GAME OVER!
Hey there Slim! Thanks for watching! Well, simply put. I use the Zoom as an overall 'summing' mixer. So apart of the Kick, anything that's on there are stereo outs of the Octa, MPC and various synths. The setup is based on mixing with a Xone 96 but since mine is broken... I have to use the livetrack. The MIDI mapping is a way of eliminating the need to menu dive in the MPC as I use different page at the same time. Also sometime you might end up on different sides of the setup and you'd want access to your sounds (in my case the kick) at all times
Thanks for watching! It’s a Zomo case that I have modified. Bought and cut the foam and wired it so I don’t have a connection nightmare in the middle of the night with cramped and wet dj booths. Pop the lid. Plug the wires and go!
+June Kim hey. Thanks for tuning in. Since the Akai MPC has MIDI mapping, I’ve connected it to the drum levels. Also reverbs and delays as well as filters can be mapped here
I usually try to not be as greedy on buying a new synth. I use the MC-707 as a central hub plus the Arturia Microfreak and just bought the Behringer Neutron. I hope I'll keep it that way. I hope......XD
@@AnalogKitchen Haha, I might have it as well. I reintroduced myself to music production so hopefully I am not going to that stage. But on the other hand, it makes you very versatile :D Groetjes
well yeah. this was a really helpful vidy . id love to see you dive into the mpc more there see whats on it and how you running that with its numerous workflows. am i right in thinking your set up with faders more so than activating and deactivating tracks on it ? and on the instruments themselves are you basically setup with easy pattern changes or are you using program changes anywhere. (cant get that to work out with the list editor on my mpc)....
i have difficulties to work ju o6a and minibrute2s in the same track. one of them must be taimed. i also have an yamaha sy22 wich brings classe, especially because i m lacking, considering i m not that experimented. i also have tr6s drum machine and beat step pro. along with that the midimix controler and launchpad x. but i still route everything thru ableton. not confident enough to go with the beat step pro as chef
Great advice and tips dude but I’ve never had my Octatrack fail. It runs out of memory all the time though, takes a lot of planning to avoid that if you have samples loaded into memory. I suppose I could switch to my OP-Z in worst case scenario!
Actually, it was a Kenton error Martin. I had a Multi-In connected to a Midi-USB box in order for me to use an LCXL to level the 8 volumes of the octa. But either the novation or the Kentons did send out a reset. All samples throughout the whole Octatrack HD their start and end point altered. I pressed play and no sound. Nothing. Luckily I had started on a new set that week and was able to perform. But 5 mins b4 go time it was stress I didn’t need.
@@AnalogKitchen Sounds like you’re well prepared now though. I know what you mean about MIDI - sometimes I get the feeling there are more than just notes and CCs flying around those cables!
Hi Sandro! Thanks for responding. I have a Squid as well but I want to implement an oldschool 'hip hop' kind of approach to making techno. The MPC does an excelent job already, but I just don't solely want to rely on one box to distribute midi. The AS1 by Pioneer will also work since it has its own sequencer. With my multiclock setup it means I can have both prepared and live elements working together instead of just pushing buttons and tweaking filters
@@AnalogKitchen thanks for your answer, I’m glad I’ve came across your channel, lots of really valuable info! I have a setup which include, MPC one, synths, tr-6s and couple of groove boxes and asking myself if a squarp pyramid would be a good idea, I use my stuff as hobby at home only. Thanks for all the great videos!
@@AnalogKitchen hi there, just wondering if you know the squarp pyramid, if yes, do you know if the squid will be a best fit for what I want? Thanks I’m learning the differences on both
@@saluddiaz Hey Sandro. I know a little bit bout the squid. The pyramid I don’t know but a mate of mine has one. The thing I have with those boxes is that there’s a limit to how many patterns you can use. And I’m not sure about reloading new arrangements during a performance. So, I might be biased towards my MPC as that’s exactly what I need from a sequencer/drum box/sampler. Maybe someone else here can help us out as well. If you want to get deeper into things, consider connecting on my Patreon (www.patreon.com/analogkitchen)
Just love the ER-M. And the sh101 gets a trigger signal as I don’t want midi. I want create arps and have the internal sequencer run. As I don’t want to have a too predictable sequence as with the 101 you don’t always know what channel comes out
Hello!! I really like your setup and Live performances! Very energetic and trippy! Actually, I’m trying to build my first DAWless setup and I wanted to ask you if you’re using any sort of compression on your mix bus?
@@AnalogKitchen thank you very much for your reply! And for the tip! I imagine you use some EQ on the mixer for each instrument or bus or no EQ neither? Sorry if I’m asking too many questions, but I’m looking how to avoid muddy mixes and have only the essential gear to keep my setup simple. and I really like the way you organized your setup!
You can really never have too many questions. Nope, none on the mixer either. Picture this. Usually, back in the days, mixing and mastering were expensive. So we had to select the correct sounds and somehow make them work. Nowadays, there’s sooo much processing going on that it almost feels like a crime not to use eq, compression etc. My tip would be to really try and listen carefully for sounds. Really listen deep. Is a sound round enough, has it enough body. Once you train yourself to listen for this, you’ll pick different synths (and samples) to work it! Hope this helps
@@AnalogKitchen thank you a lot for taking time to answer my questions! I didn’t see it the way you’re saying but it’s definitely an interesting point. Taking history into account and understanding how things were and how they are now and why, brings a lot more perspective. I don’t think that it’s a sin not to use EQ or other type of processing and actually I like to keep things minimal and your advise is very good for that! Thanks!
Really nice! Do you use some kind of scales on the machines to send the midi sequences in key to the synths? I know that octatrack has this kind of resource.
Thanks for your awesome videos ! looking forward to your upcoming album. one question tho: should i get a second or a third synth (looking at model:d and the tr3 at the moment) or should i get a looper to make different voices with one synth (currently running on maschine and teh arturia micro-freak)? i know once you have a loop running, you only have limited options to control the sound. but mattter of fact is, im a student and i only have so much resources - how do i make the most out of it? thanks for any replies, especialli if someone from the community feels like giving tips. have a great day everyone, and keep on rolling
Hey Molf. Really, if you have the money go and get another. But only if you're sure you know the other one completely. The thing with relooping synths is that you'll only have one flavor. At a certain point it's good to have more tastes on your plate! Enjoy!
I have 100 units, i won't stop, I'm sure if that. It's my drug. I have a bunch of Samplers too. I'm putting all the sounds into an akai mpc one to play for live gigs
@@AnalogKitchen ah that sucks. my mods work great but the thing still has wobbly pitch despite having done the power button replacement trick. will get it sorted one of these days! got an SH-01A to fall back on anyway (plus it can do chords, lush)
Hey Iko, it's a Zomo dj case and yes, I did cut the foam myself. You'll be surprised how motivated you get once you've lost midi cables, adapters etc. Also the 5 in the morning, afterparty gigs when you're cleaning the booth from half empty glasses before you can start is also something of the past now. Thanks for checking!
Both. The arpegiator on the Octa is amazing but for just writing melodies, I'd suggest the MPC. Longer sequences (patterns) and it eats MIDI files. So you're complex synth lines or basslines (like I have on my track Nocturnal Entities) are easy to implement.

All samples on my Octa for some reason had their start points altered (i had some Doepfer boxes sending out midi they were not supposed to). It was then I realised to not bet on unpredictable horses. I did a blinding set but was happy I had different things to fall back upon! Thanks for your comment!
Mmm he wasnt wrong....great professional vids n ya personality shines through! Awesome hehe
Thank you kindly!
Nicely done and said!!Cheers!! Subbed!! ;-)!!
Thanks for the sub!
Great Sound
Thanks Sergio!
@@AnalogKitchen :-)
SUPERB, informative video. Thanks! Btw, what kind of case are you using, that lets you fit all those little guys in it? Awesome.
Thanks for watching! It’s a Zomo case that I have modified. Bought and cut the foam and wired it so I don’t have a connection nightmare in the middle of the night with cramped and wet dj booths. Pop the lid. Plug the wires and go!
Great music. What does Launch Control XL do here?
+June Kim hey. Thanks for tuning in. Since the Akai MPC has MIDI mapping, I’ve connected it to the drum levels. Also reverbs and delays as well as filters can be mapped here
DAMN Masterpiece !!!!!
Thank you Alexander!
I usually try to not be as greedy on buying a new synth. I use the MC-707 as a central hub plus the Arturia Microfreak and just bought the Behringer Neutron. I hope I'll keep it that way.
I hope......XD
Wise words. I wish I'd have known you before I bought every synth I have now! I have GAS
@@AnalogKitchen Haha, I might have it as well. I reintroduced myself to music production so hopefully I am not going to that stage. But on the other hand, it makes you very versatile :D Groetjes
Excellent
Thanks 😊
well yeah. this was a really helpful vidy . id love to see you dive into the mpc more there see whats on it and how you running that with its numerous workflows. am i right in thinking your set up with faders more so than activating and deactivating tracks on it ? and on the instruments themselves are you basically setup with easy pattern changes or are you using program changes anywhere. (cant get that to work out with the list editor on my mpc)....
I'll address it next video more! Thanks for asking Ali!
Yep. Same if you can explain and detail a bit more how you manage your mpc in your workflow it will be great help. Love your vid and your work.
@@dgebossa noted! I’ll address it again in upcoming videos
i have difficulties to work ju o6a and minibrute2s in the same track. one of them must be taimed. i also have an yamaha sy22 wich brings classe, especially because i m lacking, considering i m not that experimented. i also have tr6s drum machine and beat step pro. along with that the midimix controler and launchpad x.
but i still route everything thru ableton. not confident enough to go with the beat step pro as chef
Yes I’ve heard trouble with the beatstep as I’ve also had some inconsistency with it. You’re working it anyway! Good on you
Great advice and tips dude but I’ve never had my Octatrack fail.
Where did you get those knob covers?
Hey brother. Look for chroma caps. DJ Techtools makes them
Great set! Love the vibe! Wondering, have you consider a sequencer like squarp pyramid to control everything as far as sequencing? Thanks for the vide
If you want to get deeper into things, consider connecting on my Patreon (www.patreon.com/analogkitchen)
i could just use MPC but I love having a large rig.
What's not to like. I saved up for mine and collected through the years.
Short answer: DUH! Yes!
Shorter answer... Hell YES
great one again!!! thks ;-)

Why the ERM midiclock vs the Roland SBX1 ??
Seems you have more control on each channel of midi
And are you using a midi/CV converter for the sh101 ?
Just love the ER-M. And the sh101 gets a trigger signal as I don’t want midi. I want create arps and have the internal sequencer run. As I don’t want to have a too predictable sequence as with the 101 you don’t always know what channel comes out
Hello!! I really like your setup and Live performances! Very energetic and trippy! Actually, I’m trying to build my first DAWless setup and I wanted to ask you if you’re using any sort of compression on your mix bus?
Thanks! I actually don’t use anything on my master. Just selecting the right sounds and levelling
I’ve studied music for the most part of my younger life so those music theory lessons come in handy o guess. Thanks for watching!
Enjoy!
I probably don't need them, but it's good to have them
That's what I keep telling myself!
Excellent video. Do you pre write your patterns in the same key?
Hi Thomas! Not all of them. I do have the songs along a certain routine. But now I’m bringing the 101 to add live flavor into it.
I have 100 units, i won't stop, I'm sure if that. It's my drug. I have a bunch of Samplers too. I'm putting all the sounds into an akai mpc one to play for live gigs
My wife complains I have cold feet in bed all of the time. I don't think she realises it's a Kurzweil K2000r. Synths for life!
@@AnalogKitchen 2500R that i put the Sampler option in to
@@wizards001 I've got that on my wish list as well. I know of Secret Cinema who also swears by it

@@wizards001 That's very DIY of you. Then again, you get to customize it exactly the way you want it. Nice one!
00:09 nice Kraftwerk (German) angle.
Wow. That’s a big compliment
holy 101! did it have the circuitbenders mods and have them removed or something?
It was a mess. Badly done too. So put it went! Haha!
@@AnalogKitchen ah that sucks. my mods work great but the thing still has wobbly pitch despite having done the power button replacement trick. will get it sorted one of these days! got an SH-01A to fall back on anyway (plus it can do chords, lush)
I was happy that it got restored to its natural form. It is an awesome synth for bass as well as leads
What case are you using? Whats the size ?
This is a Zomo NEX case. Originally built for 2 nexus and 1 mixers. I’ve customized it
What is that case you are using? Did you cut the foam yourself?
Hey Iko, it's a Zomo dj case and yes, I did cut the foam myself. You'll be surprised how motivated you get once you've lost midi cables, adapters etc. Also the 5 in the morning, afterparty gigs when you're cleaning the booth from half empty glasses before you can start is also something of the past now. Thanks for checking!
@@AnalogKitchen thank you very much for the reply. Been looking for a case like that for awhile now. You got my subscription.
Are you using the Octatrack or the MPC for sequencing the melodic parts?
Both. The arpegiator on the Octa is amazing but for just writing melodies, I'd suggest the MPC. Longer sequences (patterns) and it eats MIDI files. So you're complex synth lines or basslines (like I have on my track Nocturnal Entities) are easy to implement.
@@AnalogKitchen Cool thanks for the reply!
