I managed to pick up a Cyclone Bassbot MK1 before they got the cease and desist order and changed the design , Hardfloor said they couldn’t tell the difference between that and original 303 , if it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for me
I was an early adopter and programmed the Bass Line to Jethro Tull’s “Living in the Past” into it, but there’s not enough capacity to do full 5/4 time so I’d to crush it down to triplets.. Same with the Flute part.. I ended up exchanging it for an MC202.. In the shop the assistant thew it on top of a pile of returned 303’s

this is a fantastically well-done video. i've never been able to follow along with the thought process of designing a sound in a video like i was able to with your explanation. i don't even care about 303's but i was engaged the whole way through
On this theme, one of the prettiest sounds is a 303 doing non-303 things. Close that filter and res down and run it though some gentle delay and reverb at a step down tempo. Gorgeous.
I absolutely adore the 303 and it’s definitely more versatile than people let on. I’ve used it in many tracks I’ve released and sometimes you can’t even tell it’s a 303.
Happy for this video, I've been a strong advocate for the gentler side of the 303 for a long time. It if you don't go crazy with the resonance and envelope, it's one of the most warm and delicate sounding synths I've ever worked with. I even did a whole ambient album with just it and pedals.

I would say one of the strongest artists to use the 303 to its full potential is mostly the Jenkinson Brothers (Ceephax Acid Crew & Squarepusher). A lot of their songs use the 303 for their full potential (specially Ceephax).
When I saw the ad in Sound On Sound for the TB303 Bassline, I had to buy one for practicing guitar with, it took some learning and fernangling to get a bassline out of it, I ended up selling it and buying a 4 track and got our drummer and bassist to record their parts for our songs on it. How I wish I had kept it!
One of the best videos I have seen on here in a long time. This is something I have been thinking about but never actually tried doing and I am now super inspired. I picked up the Cyclone Analogic TT-303 MK2 since it has an upgraded sequencer, extra modifiers, and a closer sound to the original 303. Plus its built-in Pattern Lab, Loop Edit, arpeggiator functions are also great.
From what I can tell on the RE-3, the main difference in sound is because people in comparison videos usually match knob positions, but the standard RE-3 has a bit more range on at least the cutoff and resonance knobs, so you need to scale it down a small amount. Otherwise, the sound is pretty nearly indistinguishable. (For better or worse.)

When I bought my TB-303 at a used appliance store, the first thing I did was put batteries in it, but damn, they were dead in less than an hour, although I remember that the first time I spent the batteries trying to learn how to put notes into the sequencer. That was really hard Chinese torture. A friend told me to use it like a normal bass, putting it in record mode and using the pitch mode, he came to my house to show me that trick and I was surprised how close it sounded to a Fender Bassman. That gave me a lot of play to be able to add improvised lines in my DAW, but also to make sampled lines, I really spent many years playing it like that, without caring what the sequencer hid, but over time I learned how it worked and it was a lesson in musical wisdom, learning its different ways of composing a line. I'm fascinated by this machine, with which I created reggae, hiphop, house, techno songs... yes with that long tail bass that was the opposite of a trite and unpleasant sound known as "Acid". It's a bass machine, it has several types of musical basses that it can make, the sound is low but with a good preamp I could always do the right job of its analog sound. I bought a TD-3 to have as a second bass line unit and it's really great to be able to do MIDI sync, my original TB-303 doesn't have USB, nor is it compatible with the ABL3 plugin patterns like the TD-3 does and that makes it my favorite weapon for writing midis in the DAW, while my old TB-303 is the same thing, but with a little less technology and a lot of history of 80's music. Really well done video, i think this was a successful experiment, the drums actually sounded like a totally different drum machine so that plot twist was a nice touch, i think that any sound can be modified and tweaked enough to get whatever results you want, and the 303 here is no exception.

TT-303 is the GOAT. If someone offered me an original, I'd still keep the TT. THE ONLY THING it's missing is MIDI control of the filter.
Yes, the upgraded (generative / mutate) is amazing on it. Great happy accident machine to use via MIDI with other synths too.

the normal (non-squelchy) sound of the 303 is very underrated, I only use it like that because it's so sweet and analog
100% - it's quite smooth and understated. Was really fun finding new dimensions to an instrument that I'd never fully experimented with
