ZARA decided to post videos online to give insight into her reality of living with Tourette’s Syndrome after her tics got worse. The 16-year-old first experienced tics at the age of seven but aged 14, she said the situation ‘spiralled’. The teenager was also recently diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), which causes fainting and seizure episodes as well as paralysis. A video of her having a COVID test went viral and people accused her of faking it but Zara hopes to raise more awareness about her conditions. Zara is passionate about music - she sings, plays guitar and writes her own music - and these are things that give her a break from her conditions. She has been on a journey to accept her conditions and that she cannot control it. Zara said: “It doesn’t have to define who I am, I can be me separately and just have Tourette’s and I can post about it, but that’s not entirely who I am.”

I just discovered your channel, and I am unbelievably impressed by you! I thought you were at least in your early 20s because of your maturity and accomplishments. I don't have Tourette's syndrome myself, but I have a number of neurological conditions, as well as autoimmune disorders, mental health disorders, etc. After most of my brain surgeries, I've also experienced the phenomenon I believe I've heard you describe, wherein you can move only your eyes. You are quite inspiring to me! I'm twice your age, but I really resonate with what I interpret as your old soul and kind spirit. You have a big fan in New York wishing you the absolute best! ❤️🏳️‍🌈

This is why I stopped posting about my Tourette’s and other disorders online tbh. So many people get accused of faking it. EVERY single friend of mine in the community who is open about it has been told they are faking it online, or even straight to their faces. It only happened to me a few times, but it was enough to create a deep rooted fear of being doubted, shamed, bullied, and judged. Having tourettes is hard enough on its own. Many of us struggle with anxiety and feelings of embarrassment, the last thing we need is people reinforcing these fears. It’s so stressful, painful, and sometimes isolating.
I avoid people who disrespect me and situations which impact my mental health. I hate that I no longer feel comfortable spreading awareness. It shouldn’t be this way
That being said, I am so grateful for the lifelong friendships I have made because of my tourettes. It has shaped me into the person I am today. It gives me a reason to laugh every day and it has blessed me with some of the kindest, funniest, most empathetic friends I’ve ever had. I focus on the positive and have learned to love myself. There are some tics I will always hate, but I don’t hate myself for having them. I can’t control it so I shouldn’t feel ashamed or guilty.
(Btw we’ve all been diagnosed, but they don’t owe people proof of their disorder[s] to be respected!!)

Having people accuse me of faking now is just soul crushing,.
i am so glad that you are able to know and work to deal with it when you are young, I found that i would just try to hide it, and eventually my firends would find out and dispite my insistance to just let me deal, they try to help and then i always have lost those friennds because they think im doing it for attention. Its really insulting too since I dont need to get attenton that way.

I have a very severe version of it that started in early May 2021 as tics and I thought it was ocd or something. Now it's exploded into pain (possible fibromyalgia), still tics, constant tremors, paralysis, balance issues, and (possible) focal awareness seizures (going to test to see if it was a seizure or just severe tremors], and falls!

Every person is a different world and some people can experience symptoms in a more severe or mild way. Saying it's fake and justify yourself saying that people who fakes illness harms people who actually are ill it's not an excuse. Obviously, probably there are people who fake it for fame but accusing everyone of being fake it's harmful for the people who suffer from this because they may feel that no ones will believe them and then it will be more difficult to ask for help. Not only with Tourette's syndrome but also with mental disorders

I had had tics my whole life but my step parents abused me when i ticed so i learned to supress even tho they would end up in seizure like motor tics for hours. it took me 22 years after it started turning into seizure like motor tics to find out i was trauma supressing. I have since learned to let my tics out and the internal turmoil i was in almost completely vanished. But I was really nervous at first that people would think I was faking it because i had hid it for so long or throught it was JUST FND. Im learning to love my tics, even the tic attacks because it means my body is processing things the way it needs to. I have since been a lot more calm and been finally able to reach management stage with my complex case. I think it is abusive to say that some one is faking a very real condition. Imagine that you show some random, untrained person the most complex solo ballet ever spontaneously performed, by the most precise ballerina who ever lived - then you tell them you'll give them a million dollars, tax free, if they perform it perfectly, at 3x speed. And that person gives it a truly committed effort . All you'll still see is a person doing their damnedest imitation and looking like they wildin. How would Gertrude, a random passerby, look over and know that that person is not a ballerina? I imagine it would be the trying to figure out moves, and maybe if Gertrude came a bit closer and observed a little longer, the *effort random person was putting into it. Nature is that spontaneous, precision ballerina, and fakers are that wildly choreographing person.
It's not about the types, severity, or frequency of tics, as those are as varied as humans ourselves; it's about watching closely.
This is not advocating bullying people. Even if you notice or know as fact that someone is faking, it's still not your place or right to harass them about it. Leave any eventual reckoning to the medical community and those with the condition and their families. Peace to everyone.

I hesitate to say this because I don't want to sound like I am trivializing her disorder. It's very serious, and as she discussed, put her in a wheelchair.
That said, her tics are kind of adorable 🥰

_Good for you to push through the drama. It's crazy that some people actually do fake these things, but I believe you_ 🙏
One of my favorite rappers of all time, Kydd, has the same issue and I didn't even realize it until he mentioned it the other day during a livestream _(he has subtle ticks but can rap nonstop for minutes on end like it helps somehow)._
He's underrated but has a few vids with a million views, so hopefully that gives somebody some inspiration.✌

so weird how a bunch could believe the other tiktoker who was so obviously faking her condition but when this girl ACTUALLY has it, no one wants to believe her. it's really upsetting. I hope people can be more educated about this syndrome and be more caring towards people who have it:/

For those with Tourette's, I discovered whistling a song or singing a song for the whole hour works. Humming works too. Much better than colossal yelling at the top of my lungs repeatedly. Whistling doesn't annoy everyone around me. Never expect people to be kind and understanding; our tics bring out their true colors. Tics are just normal to us. Baylen and Rachel are just normal to us. Putting a Brach's Star Brite Peppermint candy between my back molars to create the perfect sized space so the nerves aren't pinched in my TMJ connecting my jaw to my skull greatly reduces the severity of my tics. My physical tics are also colossal and I easily pull muscles. With the candy between my back teeth the physical tics are tiny. You don't have to bite on the candy. Just create the space and move the bottom jaw forward a little. Experiment- we are all different. I tried a custom built mouth piece but don't like wearing it. Candy is easier. Even a pen or pencil put crossways in your mouth so it is sticking out both sides and separating your molars can help. Baclofen helps a little and doesn't make you a zombie; just a little dumber. Doctors aren't aware of the methods I listed to control tics and disappointingly I found they could care less; no money in it for them.

no one wants to take ticks, if you develope them for real and experience that you can't stop them , when you feel the build up, many would think again. Those who are not in her body or walking a day in her shoes, and give yourselves permission to say it is fake, show me your proof that it's fake? if you can do that, then your comment will be valid!

Thank you for bringing awareness to tics. I have really bad anxiety tics and I hate going out in public because I’ll flip people off, say hello to them repeatedly, try to touch their hair if it’s long, etc and it’s incredibly embarrassing. Seeing other people experiencing the same things makes me feel less alone.
