I think manufacturers have an indirect hand through reviewers. With the exception of Savage Geese, all car reviewers on youtube say the same thing about new cars. They never address poor designs and use terms like upscale, and luxury feel when talking about non-luxury vehicles. As a result I've seen former luxury car owners buy an Accord or Camry and then complain online about creaks, rattles, and other quality issues. I'm sure there is a lot of that car reviewers also use subtle talk about SUVs/trucks since manufacturers have such a huge profit margin compared to cars.

We have a 2019 UX that is one year old with 12k miles. Love it. Solid. Quiet. Comfortable. Beautiful interior. Ride great. In eco mode we get 42 hwy mpg!! And ours is not the hybrid! My son is 6’2” and fits/drives it comfortably, however, if you are taller, I’d upgrade to the NX or RX. We’ve had two dealer servicings at no charge. Adequate horsepower. You don’t buy this car if you are Ricky-racer. $40k out the door, and with every visit to the dealer, we are treated like it’s a $125k car! Free chow, free soft drinks, free wi-fi, lounge chairs, big screen tv and everyone is super friendly.
Chicks…. lol. You’re definitely the target demographic. Wowed by lounge couches and free WiFi! 😂. Truly a driver. Anyways good that you’re happy with it, they do indeed try to woo you at Lexus. Sent a taxi for me and gave me their branded Lexus water. Shmucky but good salesmanship.
I'm about to purchase one. I disagree with a few things you said. However, you are an amazing reviewer. Your passion for this and what you do is evident. Please don't stop
@@xz9376 I picked one up in January 2019. I have the UX250H as well. I love it. Will never go back to a non hybrid vehicle. The KM's I drive every day haven't changed but my gas costs are less than half. The most its ever cost me to fill up is about $32 CAN. I'm getting between 6.0 and 6.2 litres per 100 km. My IS250 was close to $70 to fill and my mileage was around 11.5 litres per hundred km's.
I put considerable time in a family member's 2020 UX 200. With only 1k on the odo I got 33mpg with expected decent acceleration, especially from 0-30, where I need it most. The interior is absolutely stunning and great to the touch. This reviewer complains about the space. This was never meat to be a people or cargo hauler, other than two people and groceries or a couple sets of golf clubs. Lexus offers bigger models to satisfy people with SUV (not a CUV). @@phungpei2277 Thanks so much for your response. I inadvertently directed my question to you rather than Aidan which I have corrected. In any event, I really like Lexus models and was looking to purchase a hybrid this year but the lack of standard options in some models versus the cost is a bit outrageous. I actually test drove the Mazda CX-5 but the ride wasn't as smooth as my old Lexus and it doesn't come in a hybrid. I haven't bought a vehicle in over 10 years and really feel stuck this year as to what I should buy. Ah, well. Perhaps, Lexus will change the seats of the 2021 Lexus NX hybrid to be more comfortable but I'm going to need something sooner than that.

Great looking second car…. Drives around town beautifully, comfortable, classy and economical. Most other reviewers love the looks and give positive reviews….
While not in the market or would ever buy one, I still find these videos top notch and worth watching. Testament to the quality of this channel and production.
We've had our UX for a little over a year now, and 16k miles. Is it fast? No. Is the back seat small? Yes. Is the design weird? Yes. But is it comfortable, affordable, reliable, smooth, etc? Absolutely. We actually love where the volume/tune knobs are, and now in our other vehicles, it's an adjustment when we reach down near the armrest and remember the controls aren't there. The Lexus dealer/service experience can't be matched. We feel this is a long-term car for us, and we traded in a 2015 GTI for it. We don't miss that at all. Of course it's slower than the GTI, but we gained a lot of luxury features, an interior that will hold up better, higher resale value, and a much smoother car.
Bought one in Feb after test driving a Volvo xc40, Mercedes GLA, Audi and the infinity. It's not for everyone but suits me perfectly. Averaging 41 miles per the gallon!!!
I honestly would prefer if CVT cars did away with the fake shifts. I guess I'm an engineering purist, I hate anything fake (especially when it sacrifices performance). I feel like saying it "sounds bad" without fake shifts is just a perception issue, it's just what we're used to. At the end of the day engines are just big noisy controlled explosions, what it sounds like is something we should get used to not something we should actively try to change while sacrificing fuel economy/performance. The fact is that when we allow the CVT to act as it was designed, it gives us better fuel economy. Why throw that away for "the right sound"?
... Because we see with our ears and 4cyl engines at 6k rpm sound bad when no 'tuning' is applied to the induction/exhaust, aka 2 cycle weed trimmer at 10k rpm
The fake shifty became a thing because idiots whined about CVT's being CVT's. But I still cannot comprehend why they don't allow you to turn the fakery off.
Liked before watching, cause I know it is a great review already, but will watch later in the gym on the treadmill. Your videos have made me loose 9 lb this year already. Not from dysentry mind you but cause I keep watching all your content and keep running longer than I planned to. I even went back all the way to your old FRS movies and also some wired af s*t viedos you made and had a blast with the humor in all of them. Love cars, love your style, will drink a protein shake in your honor good sir!
Eric O could be the next Turbowski play your cards right. Kidding aside, I agree with your assessment...and your channel is the best auto repair videos on UA-cam. Thanx to both of you!
My wife and I just purchased a new Tuscan thanks to your videos and "real", unadulterated, no fake-face, no BS reviews. Regarding this Lexus; it's interesting you noted the suspension because the 2019 Rav4 we tested (I know not a Lexus but same gens) felt harsh on sharp impacts, I think this might be a Toyota thing because from the Prius to the Camry from year to year, I have always thought Toyota suspension just rides harsh. IDK
I was actually a fan of the outgoing CT200h (yes the Prius powertrain makes it slow but 40mpg is nothing to sneeze at). The UX250h seems to be a pretty good replacement since it is taller, has AWD and the fuel efficiency is still right up there along with assured reliability & low running costs.
I always appreciate the lengths you go to in your review. But in this case, I think you’re reviewing this as if it cost TWICE as much as it does. No one will be deciding between this and a Porsche Macan. 99.9% of the buyers of this car are probably young people JUST barely bumping up from a Toyota and they want the Lexus badge and the premium feel. And the hybrid will be a great choice with higher system hp and better mpg all at once.
Hey Geese, wanted to chime in and say great review. I especially appreciate the way you carefully navigated the fact that this car's design was inspired by a female engineer. As an engineer myself, I see a lot of antipathy towards the few females in my profession, and it really grinds my gears. As you said, I think it's good to have a diversity of perspectives in any field. Car design is no different. Honestly, after watching this video, I expected to see a bunch of sexist horseshit in the comments section about how women can't design cars. I was encouraged that you didn't say anything of that sort. Even if a lot of us enthusiasts wouldn't ever buy a car like this, I'm sure there are plenty of people who will like it for exactly the reasons enthusiasts might not. I hope to see more female-designed vehicles in the future. There could be some really great, fresh new ideas for car design to come from that. Great job, as always.
I'm watching from Europe so I couldn't care less what cars come to the US, much less so crossovers and SUVs which I completely dislike. But Savage Geese just makes so compelling reviews you cannot not watch! You seem a regular Joe doing down-to-earth reviews for other regular Joes and that's what is so great about this channel! Sensible consumer advice.
I never comprehend the meaning of your video sub(tle)titles ("Fighting Upstream," "All Jokes Aside") and you consistently review vehicles both designed to bore me to tears and out of my price range but I appreciate the effort, quality, and craftsmanship of your production. Thanks man.
Is the hybrid version not available yet? The hybrid AWD is the thing that IMO justifies UX’s existence. This is like the non-hybrid CHR (here in Finland we only get the hybrid version) - I struggle to see why it exists, when the hybrid is what makes it tick.
I grew up driving a 1989 Firebird Formula; still own it. Sit in the "back seat" of that car and you'll appreciate every cm of room you get out of these CUV's! I know what you mean though. These CUV's are meant to be more roomy and more practical than sedans which is why they're replacing sedans, but they don't quite make them different enough yet.
@@coreygraft7042 I have a 2012 CT, if they made a gas only version and put some decent horsepower it would of sold more. Yeah I get 45MPG but its slow as heck. Still a good car though.
Beautiful camera and production work as per usual Mr. Geese! As for the car - I care not for 0 to 60 times, inspired handling nor Nurburgring stickers. All I want is a comfortable and reliable car which gets me from A to B. In that case the UX might be aimed at me so I like it (obviously not the sport spec!)
Wife drives 2021 UX from new, and it has been a solid car not one problem just dealer service. Yes it's smaller but safety is top notch on testing results. The smaller car is what she wanted, this however makes it a great urban machine getting in and out of parking and running around the city and it's just a little taller for drivers view. I don't drive it often but when I do it takes no time to feel comfortable and appreciate the lexus luxury and ease of drive experience. Fuel up time is not painful. I have to say It is easy to live with. I would recommend a set of snow/ice tires if you live in a snowy area so you can make it to the ski hill on the weekend.
People hate on CVTs and I will concede that systems without a physical 1st or 2nd gear are horrendously slow on acceleration but... Look at that engine efficiency, staying at peak RPM power for as long as you ask of it, never having to switch gears and losing energy outside ideal revs. You don't get max horsepower for a brief moment before running out of cog, you get it all the time. That's beautiful engineering.
Somehow I found the volume knob layout a pretty cool idea to keep your eyes on the road, and your right hand controlling everything without having to move much.
You just have to remember this Lexus is tiny, corolla sized ... super super tiny... and they actually made it look good, dare i say big ... that’s a huge achievement in itself.
I think Toyota/Lexus has gotten a little too daring with styling, but that sort of bold design works on smaller vehicles. The UX looks more interesting inside and out than most of the competition, and aside from the grill, I think it’s quite a bit more reserved than some of the newer entries. There’s a decent value proposition, though I think a $30,000 base would be more in line with what you’re getting. Otherwise, I dig it for a versatile, reliable urban and suburban runabout.
You have the best Cinematography out there! I need to be your apprentice ;) Since I'm dedicated to covering Lexus, I'll try to fill in the gaps. 1) F Sport UX can also have Black interior other than the Circuit Red 2) Radio buttons could have been slapped onto the dash, but they didn't want to over-clutter it and forfeit the clean look. Instead they put the radio controls where the drivers hand will be the majority of the time. It takes some time to get used to, but literally, the radio controls are always in your hand whether you have both hand on the steering wheel or one hand on the arm rest. Remember, the car is designed for 25-40 year olds who "listen" to music all the time, so they wanted the drive to have audio control in every situation. 3) 2) Getting in and out of the back is difficult for me being 6'1. Rear doors are small. Once inside, it's not bad for such a small vehicle. You have to remember that this car replaces the CT 200h, which has the same or less rear leg room. 4) Load floor is okay for the rear hatch. I wish it had a lower access point but it's not a deal breaker for 99% 5) Why would you buy the Lexus over the Toyota brothers? Quieter, better re-sale, built in Japan (the UX is anyways), HYBRID version with AWD...That's the biggest reason! 6) No Fake Exhaust tips BUT it still looks cheap. Even in the Hybrid, they didn't even try to hide it. 7) Steering and Brakes are great! Your takes on them are spot on. 8) Suspension is no GX 460 and something I've become to be accustomed to with the NX models. It can be a bit harsh. 9) Engine sound isn't good. Probably the most cringy thing about this car. 10) Paddle shifters are sadly the only way get the traditional auto shifting simulation. Mashing the gas holds at redline :( It is a CVT afterall. 11) Overall Styling I think is good, not great. The front end is really nice IMO and so are the rear taillights. The ugliest part is the rear fender panel from behind the rear doors to the hatch is just not well-executed.
Great detail and explanation of the UX! It has its flaws but it gives reason for improvement. I think Lexus should give it a higher ground clearance and get rid of the plastic cladding. A UX-F optional at a higher price would be nice too...to give consumers a choice in if they want fuel economy or power but we can't have both due to the UX's weight. Great coverage of the UX on your page by the way!
Hi savagegeese ... Thanks a lot for your exceptional work. I have been watching and following other reviewers over 3 years. I like watching new cars and their reviews.. But hands down I really appreciate in fact an honour to watch your videos and reviews.. From video , editing everything is top notched and true to reality......... respect
The problem is that it's based on the Corolla Hatchback with the same power train, Yes it does have a lot more features and tech than the Corolla Hatchback but is it really worth the $13k+?
Same powertrain for fuel economy and reliability. People would buy this for size, reliability, and fuel economy. The Corolla Hatchback is minute in size compared to the UX and a cheaper Toyota SUV you lose the luxury comfort, fuel economy, and subcompact size (for parking spaces/living in the city). Ever seen a Rav4 or 4Runner struggle in a parking garage or parallel park that most soccer Mom's suck at. It's hilariously sad.

Gee whiz. We have an F Sport loaded with everything on order due here in March. We love the vehicle. It's heads and shoulders above everything else we looked at ... which was just about everything else. Reliability, oh yeah. Comfort, oh yeah. Interior, beautiful. Exterior, we like it. Everything about the vehicle suits us just fine. It's easy to get in and out of and small enough for crowded parking lots. Not sure about other people but THIS model is just what we want. I don't understand why anyone would be concerned with the sound of the engine and whether it sounded correct....or not. Who cares? It got enough power. It stops great. It's made in Japan by people who make reliable vehicles. Close enough for us!!!
Long time viewer and fan- I disagree with you on the audio controls. When I sat in the UX at the dealer I was surprised how natural those controls were. I think they would be very easy to use without looking down and become one of the most enjoyable ergonomic aspects of the cabin in using it daily.
When my passenger window motor went in my Element... I took the interior panel apart removed the shit motor, ordered a new one.. and put everything... back together. The... power rear hatch isnt "about breaking", its about b.s convenience of letting the "car" do it for you.. instead of closing the thing on ya own. When ya key fob wont work, or the battery in the car died and ya cant get into the damn thing... thats when ya gonna curse yaself for buying such an idiot vehicle.
@@AdolfHitler-xp1nxit’s not that bad.. “beautiful” no… of course not. It’s a luxury commuter for women and seniors… but solid and reliable with nice interior. Unfortunately if the size of the UX doesn’t do it for you, the NX only gives rear passengers 3” of addition leg room, and you have to spend another 10k to get it. Only once you upgrade to the RX does leg room really improve. The UX definitely looks like a great value with the tech available and the NVH improvements that have taken place over the last decade with the TNGA platform
It's easy to hate this thing, but one thing to remember is that this is the cheapest Lexus you can get into and therefore it will have compromises. I personally don't think Lexus should have made it but then again, they are trying to capture a certain type of demographic here and I think they will do alright with it.
Their demographic.. doesnt give a fuck what they drive.. as long as its generic (white, primer or black), leased and has pointless b.s like a power rear hatch.
@@SlidTossedPissed Eh, nothing wrong with that. I'm an enthusiast myself so I know what you mean, but at the end of the day I don't care if someone wants to drive a generic car.

Appearance wise, this might be my favorite Lexus headlight design. If it wasn't for those horrible wheel arches, this would be a nice looking SUV. I've never been a fan of squared off wheel arches, especially unpainted.
Glad you did this review. I was curious, I love my RX so much I’m not sure I’d downsize to this, looks good however. Not guaranteed those tires, manufacturers change non stop. Amazing to see it’s a Corolla underneath
I’m wondering if TheStraightPipes will try photoshopping off the wheel arches in their review, because I don’t have the competence to try it myself. I agree that for sure they’re the least attractive bit of trim on the car. Maybe they’ll pull a Volvo and do a top trim level with body color accents after a mid-cycle refresh. I really like the mirrors! Too bad they’d look better on a BMW.
Savage Geese, please drive the quicker hybrid turbo model with AWD. I did see this in person and feel the NX is the better value for the money. What would improve the overall proportions would be to raise the suspension by 2 inches. Otherwise, it looks off set.
Thanks for one of the best reviews I've ever seen. You covered the good and the bad very well and I appreciate that alot. I would have liked to hear a little about the car(s) that you liked a lot more than this though. What are they, by the way?
Another gem in the car review archives.. Well done!!! As for the ute........I can't believe they put a cvt in a Lexus. Stop with the crap transmissions already.
Here in Eastern Europe many prefer the CUV versions of hatchbacks because of heavy winters and crap roads (come in package). Some of the new hatchbacks offered here have ridiculously low ground clearance (10 or 12 cm on the new Civic) and you will scrape your car. You often find ridiculous speed bumps, curbs, ramps and giant potholes that will hit the underside of your car. My Volvo has 13 cm ground clearance and twice I've had to go through giant puddles that have crater sized potholes in them and I've nearly cracked my oil pan. There are scrape marks on that thing like you wouldn't believe. Also, ground clearance and AWD helps in deep snow, which we have too much of. So, that's one reason why people go to CUVs like the Mercedes GLA or this thing rather than their regular hatchback equivalents. Another thing I want to touch on is this new ridiculous oil viscosity. Toyota is generally focused on reliability and durability. I don't know how they've been able to reconcile that with such low viscosity oil. I'd like to see a video that explains that.
Your videos are so nice and well designed... would you ever consider a wider aspect ratio?? For a more cinematic feel and to fit the iPhone X/galaxy screens a little better??
Yeah Doug is like a whiney boring caricuture of himself. I remember his writing back in the Jalopnik days..he was hilarious and witty. Now he stretches out everything and tries poorly to create click bait. Savage Goose has a better approach including the click bait of having amazing photography and gauraunteed insights.
I have been watching your videos these past few weeks. Great presentation, nice detail, practical comments. Please keep it up. BTW... where is Mr. Turbowski?
I love the thorough review. I wouldn’t call the UX an over styled mess as I think it looks pretty good. If I were to pick apart anything I’d mention the mpgs are just ok and some of the interior materials look like they were pulled out of a Prius. I don’t think it’s the worst car on the road though. Have a look at the Buick Encore GX-I’d say it’s around this size and a real mess of an suv.
I wish lexus designers would balance all the trademark "L" angles with some curves and other shapes to contrast. To my eyes it just looks excessive. I'm a big fan of the interior materials, curves and designs in many of their models especially in tan. Great place to be a passenger.
Let's give credit to Lexus for not requiring Premium fuel in order to achieve that extra 1 HP over the Corolla engine's output . Why would anyone buy this instead of a a cheaper Corolla hatch or a bigger and more capable RAV4? #Vanity
Answer? : Brand cachet. I'm not a Lexus fan, but I fell in love with this car's interior, above all other Toyota/Lexus models. I even like the exterior and the colorway of Atomic Silver exterior and Red interior is really stunning. But it's got zero performance and no second row space at all. Your Vanity hashtag is entirely appropriate but I don't construe it as condescending because let's face it - that's what Toyota is going for with this Lexus model. I'm more irked that I'd be spending roughly $38k in SoCal for this car with an 'F Sport' trim to get all the good looks... 'F Sport' on this car? It's oxymoronic.

How I feel about it's sister the chr. Exact same feeling.
Why throw that away for "the right sound"?
it's here to basically shut people complaining about constant noise up. i honestly cant see any other reason.
If only F1 haven’t banned CVT in 90s we would have a constant christmas engine screams as something cool amongst gearheads
Another great video, music, editing, and a lot of effort for the night shots.
Digging the night shot too👍🏻
I loved them as well
The area where the volume and tuner are remind me of an old walkman cassette player when i first messed with it lol
What? yes?, you called?
Liked before watching, cause I know it is a great review already, but will watch later in the gym on the treadmill. Your videos have made me loose 9 lb this year already. Not from dysentry mind you but cause I keep watching all your content and keep running longer than I planned to. I even went back all the way to your old FRS movies and also some wired af s*t viedos you made and had a blast with the humor in all of them. Your reviews are hands down the best IMO....👍
IDK
I feel like they are definitely more firm but their sport models just have issues absorbing larger impacts. Rav4 sport as well.
Patagonia needs to give you some free swag
Don't you pay a VAT tax on every hour watching American imported media? If not why not?
Wait, we have the name of the person responsible for the Lexus touchpad thing?!?!?!!

Titus,
Get the cross.
Been watching UA-cam car reviews for years and nothing comes close to the magic you do.
It’s such a cute and goodlooking baby predator.Lexus is the league of predators because of its grille designs and there light design.
Ikr. I absolutely love Lexus' new designs. Fucking majestic and beautiful.
Oh man i just clicked on the video and im already in love with the production on this video. Excellent content as always!
Basically it's a replacement for the CT 200h.
Only that was a much better looking car.
@@weedmastersr those black plastic arches are fugly!!
Interior is way better, looks like an actual Lexus. But I agree CT looked better
If the CT had a UX style interior, it might have saved it. Might...
The best car reviews on UA-cam
Thanks for honest and thorough but not pandering. Always enjoy your content. Thanks for what you do
You have the best Cinematography out there! I need to be your apprentice ;)
Since I'm dedicated to covering Lexus, I'll try to fill in the gaps.
1) F Sport UX can also have Black interior other than the Circuit Red
2) Radio buttons could have been slapped onto the dash, but they didn't want to over-clutter it and forfeit the clean look.
I wish it had a lower access point but it's not a deal breaker for 99%
5) Why would you buy the Lexus over the Toyota brothers?
Keep rollin with your channel, I saw a few of your vids!
@@savagegeese thanks! See you around.

No, it is not.
Nope. I'll have the 2019 Rav4 and save $4-7K
I think that the majority of people buying it won't even know that fact.
First allow me to ask, are you an urban professional?
Same powertrain for fuel economy and reliability. People would buy this for size, reliability, and fuel economy. The Corolla Hatchback is minute in size compared to the UX and a cheaper Toyota SUV you lose the luxury comfort, fuel economy, and subcompact size (for parking spaces/living in the city). Ever seen a Rav4 or 4Runner struggle in a parking garage or parallel park that most soccer Mom's suck at. It's hilariously sad.
As much as I don’t like compact crossovers, this one is actually pretty good
Good job Lexus!

I like this amazing intro
Wow, if Lexus started to bottom out on the suspension, what is this world coming to? :-O
Love the car and love your reviews thanks,
It's easy to hate this thing, but one thing to remember is that this is the cheapest Lexus you can get into and therefore it will have compromises.

There is just something about this guys voice and the way he talks that makes me want to watch every single video of his. Even if the video topic doesnt strike my interest.

Good, succinct review. All reviews should be around 20 Minutes long.
They could have had more room for a volume and tuning knob if they didn't put that old fashioned CD slot on the dash!
I think this is the best looking crossover. Trapezoids and BULGE really get me going.
I'd like to see a video that explains that.
its badically a toyota C-HR redisigned by lexus, with a smaller boot and with a better looking interior

0:30 look at that cvt go!!!
#Vanity
Thank you for pointing that out, it is however better looking in my opinion and sometimes that's most important.
@J.D. Turner Is the interior $12,000 better?
@@rightlanehog3151 You talk like the only difference between toyota and lexus are the interiors. You might want to get your eyes checked bud
Because it’s a Lexus and it looks like a Lexus. Some people buy for the name and perceived quality and lux nameplate/dealer experience
