A couple of things I wanted to clarify about the UX- Kudos to Lexus for the shift lever. It's a standard PRNDL mechanism that's sure and solid when selecting gears (unlike many electronic shift knobs these days). And the seats didn't just look great, they were very supportive and comfortable if not vented. And Evil Twin forgot to mention the back seats are not heated. That guy can't be relied on...

The fuel economy is amazing compared to my RC that ravenously eats up fuel. My only problem with the UX is that it seems like some of the interior materials have been pulled from a Prius? Anyone else notice that? If I’m buying a Lexus, I don’t want an interior made with Prius parts. Outside of that, I can’t say I have any problems with the UX. My feeling is it’s better than competitors in the segment.

Well, if you are to pull on a driveway to show of your new car and said, I just bought a new Kia! It wouldn’t be as shocking as you saying, I just bought a new Lexus!
What an unoriginal comment. They'll have to last because it's predecessor, the CT200h, had low sales numbers. In the U.S., when introduced in 2011, 14,000 units. In 2018, 4 units! The UX needs to do better!
As an old school GTI owner I have to admit that I resent the designation of this class of vehicles as small crossovers. They're hatchbacks, damn it! Oh well, there's no point debating "marketing speak." And oh yeah, "Get off my lawn!" For $44K I'd go with a Golf R instead (and maybe save a few bucks. Maybe.) And if I wanted to save even more, I'd look at the Mazda3 hatchback in its top trim. Each has a proper AWD system in place of the rather odd version Toyota has come up with for the Prius and the UX. But in either of those cases I'd have to sacrifice the Lexus purchase and owner "experience." Where else can you get a double half-caf latte served while waiting for your car to be serviced? And I'd probably have to sacrifice some reliability. (Though the difference between Toyota/Lexus and other brands has shrunk significantly in recent years. Almost all manufacturers offer far more reliable vehicles than they built a decade or two ago. For the most part, take care of your car and it will be very reliable. The advantage Toyota provides is reliability even when ignored and abused.) The hybrid UX is a plus but while I'm not a performance junkie I think I'd find the UX rather boring to drive. And now I know who was creeping along ahead of me in a UX a couple of weeks ago. Kudos for getting 50 mpg, Tom. Now please get out of the way.
If you drove a UX I think you'd find the corning fun on public roads. It's tuned, shall I say, realistically, for a good time. Obviously not a track toy, it's not supposed to be. Maybe that was me creeping along in front of you (though I can tell you the UX is pretty stable at speeds over 75 MPH). I like the idea of the hybrid here since more and more I feel humans need to buy more fuel efficient vehicles. And I agree the margin has shrunk in the past 10-15 years. Statistics support that. Our six year old Kia Soul has been a champ. Nothing but gas and oil and one factory recall for a headliner issue. Same with my Cadillac (rated quite low). After three years of ownership, just one issue with the touchscreen, covered under warranty.
2nd the Golf.:R or an Alltrack SEL or maybe even the GSW SEL with the 1.4t...maybe. A top trim sedan or mazda3 hatch would do circles around this, save you cash, but not get you bonus points at the country club on golf outings.
@@DrivenCarReviews Happy to see you say that about reliability, Tom. I'm often amused/annoyed by troll comments that trash one or another automotive brand based on nothing more than internet rumors, friend of friend anecdotes, or personal experience with a brand years ago. When I was a kid and dinosaurs roamed the freeways a vehicle that lasted a hundred thousand miles was such a rarity that it almost rated a mention in a small town newspaper. Now almost any vehicle can be expected to last more or less intact when the odometer turns over to six figures. Over the last 30 years or so I've had a few (very few) reliability/durability issues in cars I've been careful to service and maintain but I wouldn't claim that Mazdas or Volvos, the brands with which I've had problems, are inherently unreliable. Statistics just don't support a claim like that. And my experience with Hondas, VW's and KIA's over the last decade has been uniform. Virtually no problems at all with any of six vehicles I've owned. As far as hybrids are concerned, I share the concern about finite resources. I won't live to see the world run out of dinosaur juice but I have a 14 y/o daughter who'll face a different world from mine in a few years. And even while oil is still plentiful, the impact on world politics that stems from over-reliance on it is troubling. Personally, I'm most impressed by developments of pure EV vehicles, especially longer range and more affordable offerings. And in the long run hydrogen fuel cell options hold a lot of promise. I haven't made the change yet but I'm considering an extended range Soul EV. And if I lived in California I'd look seriously into Honda's hydrogen fuel cell Clarity. Honda's lease offer coupled with free fuel for 80,000 miles is rather amazing.
@@davidjym True. Though I'm inclined to believe they're isn't nearly the range of reliability/durability among brands that there was some years ago. It's clear though that Toyota/Lexus believes their reputation for reliability is a huge advantage for the brands and they invest in it heavily. Often to the exclusion of other priorities (e.g. turbocharging, quality interior materials, etc.) I don't mean that as a criticism; I'm simply pointing out that Toyota expects their customers to pay a premium for their reputation for reliability, either in the price or a vehicle or in the cost-cutting that's inevitable in producing a vehicle to a particular price point.
@@TA-np4mc Agreed, my dealership has a bunch of markdowns. I testdrove a UX200 F-Sport the other day they marked it down from 37K to 34K and I haven't even negotiated. I'm planning to test a UX250h sometime this week to see if I like it better...the UX200 F-Sport felt way too heavy and sluggish.
The reason why these small crossovers are extremely popular is because the model lineup has grown too big in size for most consumers, this goes for every car companies. A bit larger cargo area would help the UX, otherwise great styling and 'sporty' looking.
When she brags that her Japanese are better with architecture than everyone else, I have to disagree. Some of the buildings in Dubai, India are unbelievably nicely made, and there are plenty of other examples of other nationalities that make nice buildings. The architecture of this SUV will not allow me to sit in the back seat because of my height, and it probably should have been considered in the architecture that tall Americans like me will likely sit in the back seat, and that we might want to have more space in the back because Americans tend to have more money, because of more well off financially people like architects need space to load more things in the back.
Test Drive ??? Not here in New Zealand. I have bought two new motorbikes and they wouldn't let me test drive either ! I've contacted Lexus Auckland they have no cars available for test drive ! The one problem with a small country.
Maybe it time to stop calling them crossovers and just call them cars. They are what people want a car to be... a little more interior space, a little higher off the ground, and possibly more capable. At the expense of handling. But this is "car" according to most consumers.
Little devils! >=) Thank you for always emphasizing, "get out there and test drive" many different brands and models. Heck, just visiting dealers and sitting in a bunch of cars (takes no time and no need to even bother talking to anyone) can get you to *see* what you could be missing.
I don't know why ppl can't work a track pad ? I have no problem with Lexus infotainment system and that track pad ... Hell I think if you can't work this track pad u can't work a laptop either lol
Well, as a matter of fact I hate the track pad on my laptop, too. I always use a mouse. But speaking for an abused minority of southpaws I have to say that requiring interaction using my right hand is especially galling. I always wonder if drivers in countries with right-hand drive vehicles experience the same annoyance when required to use their left "paws."
I'm pretty adept with trackpads. My video editing platform demands constant use of one. But I find the one used by Lexus very awkward, especially while driving. For me it just doesn't work well, even after going into the setting and adjusting it.
Laptops don't hop and vibrate while working; cars do! That's why trackpads will always be poor input methods for ICE. Ditto touchscreens. It's why iDrive is so effective, by contrast.
@@darexdarex I think after a lil learning curve most ppl will be ok ... U don't need to do some things while driving anyway lol ... All new infotainment systems require some type of learning curve.
Hi TOM! Thoughts on reviewing the hot looking new Kia Telluride? Word on the street is that it's going to be a great value, and surpass the Highlander in the segment.
No 4WD is a deal breaker for me. Back seat is too small even for a child carseat. I'll pass. CRV did a great job with interior room. Barring the turbo engine that has oil dilution problems, it's a winner.
It has 2 motors in the synergy drive which is the P711 shared with the RAV4 etc. Nobody buys the F Sport models, they are just for reviews. The Toyota/Lexus eCVT is the best inplementation of the hybrid. KIA and Honda etc do it badly. 54 MPG is very welcome.
It s strongest paper is the powertrain hybrid system no doubt and the interior looks not that bad but in this segment the real compact CUV s i d take the Kona for all the other reasons. Sportier looking more dynamic driving and more value. Nice video as always.
I just decided on a 2019 ux250h f sport. It was 1 yr lease turn in with 12k mi. Got it for 33k from a Lexus dealer, included a 5 yr unlimited mi warranty with the price. A 2 hr drive that evening to take the car home and the next day while cleaning it up a bit the car locked up and wouldn’t do anything. Had to jump start it and then the check engine light came on. Currently waiting for my appt to see what is wrong. Car will drive but it tells me I need to call the Lexus dealer and the check engine light is on. Bummed I bought it and I just get to look at in my garage. But still excited to eventually make it my commuter car.
Crossovers are such a blight and the luxury versions are the worst. $42k?? That's it. I'm going to start a faith called "Stinger GT's Witnesses". I gotta spread the good news of real hatchbacks and wagons.
Wagons are way too big and a different segment. I do agree about hatchbacks but they need to be sub-compact in size in order to thrive in the city which is the point of these types of vehicles. Hence why the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HRV, Toyota CH-R, Hyundai Kona, etc are dominating in sales.
So, when is a hatchback not a hatchback? When the marketing dept calls it a 'crossover'. What did it crossover? Knock knock...'who's there?'... "hatchback!"... 'hatchback who?'..."Lexus UX!" They'll build crossover hatchbacks, but not 'regular' car type wagons with the same technology. At this price point, it's better to go loaded, top trim pleabian brand sedan or one of VW's wagons in SEL trim.

A whole heap of meh! This is clearly a luxury fat ch r with the better Japanese powertrain where it is offered in hybrid. This vehicle should start at 25k
When you buy a lexus you are buying reliability. While I would choose a new Mercedes over a new Lexus I would choose a used Lexus over a used Mercedes.
@@leifsicool I would recommend one closely check reliability date specific to Lexus models whether shopping new or used. A JDM lexus will uphold the older data however they have continued to slip. I don't care what anyone says this looks so pitiful for a Lexus and all I see is a #posh #chr
That's actually what it is since it is the same platform only a little bigger, more power, and better gas mileage. Lexus can't mark it at 25K that's already what the CH-R goes for. It should have started at $30K but $32K is just as good and is actually the cheapest affordable luxury sub-compact in the segment (Audi Q3, BMW X2, Mercedes GLA, etc).
No spare 😡 (but great review, Tom!) ...also, the cheap (AF 3:09) idiots lights like "READY", "PARK", etc. that glow in the dashboard of every Toyota hybrid since 1999. A real luxury car would have a true LCD status display, not just a backlit (with a bulb!!!) panel with a cutout for "READY". And I guess we must all continue to beat the now long-dead horse of Lexus/Toyota Infotainment which was obsolete 10 years ago, let alone today. If we keep screaming, we will drag Lexus into the 20th (yes, I said, 20th) century; maybe by 2040 we'll finally get some 21st century kit when it is all "proven" technology (or Lexus runs out of old stock of the stuff from 1998).
Actually, when I spoke to Chika Kako I asked her about that. They found that painting the trim body color made it look tall and tippy. The designers all felt that contrasting trim balanced the car. So there ya go.
Super ugly in design and use of cheap materials and poor quality well well below Lexus brand stands for... some of the better buys are Buick Encore, Volvo xc40, cadallic xt4
@@moeanthony9308 I don't see why you couldn't shop this with the Buick Encore. They're the same size, set out to do the same things, and are within the same price margin. Obviously, the Lexus stands out as nicer in terms of materials and features. I wouldn't buy the Buick over this, but I still think it's reasonable to consider they compete for the same customers.
Moe Anthony, I don’t mind the original Encore. I think it looks reasonably nice for what it is. I also think it’s well priced for everything you get. I would look at this and the UX as competitors. But to me, it’s obvious the UX has the advantage over the Encore in terms of materials quality and engineering. The Encore GX, however, is horrible to me. I can’t imagine anyone being willing to put any money into such an inept, cheap CUV like that.
Lexus has some of the worst crossovers/SUVs on the market today. A far cry from the solid LS, LC, ES, and RC cars entries. While I applaud them for their dedication to quality control and the heap of standard features their cars have, they simply do not make good Crossovers and SUV’s. The LX is dated and needs to be replaced. The RX is dated and needs to die altogether. The RX is hideous and poorly packaged. And the UX is a packaging and design disaster as well. The only respectable crossover the have is the aging NX. Their entire crossover/SUV lineup needs an overhaul
Eleanor Massaro My mistake, I meant to say the GX needs to die altogether. But the RX needs to be redone as well. I’m a Lexus enthusiast. I love all 3 generations of the IS and the IS-F which never gets the respect it deserves. I love all 4 generations of the GS (except for the recent facelift, yuck). I loved every LS and the SC coupe (even the odd 2nd gen) are marvelous machines. Much better than their overpriced and unreliable German counterparts. And done even get me started on the gorgeous LC or the mental LFA. The point is, I love Lexus, but they have to do better with their SUV’s. They’re just bad. I look at a comparable X5 or XC90 and yeah I know they’re not as reliable, but I’d take them over the RX simply because the RX is such a mess stylistically speaking. Its styling also poops on its practicality and visibility. It’s just all bad.

Optioned up they way you mention it's a 7 seater and it's $46,500 with delivery. But I get your point.
That Telluride is looking better and better. Kia got a winner
But then you'd have to be seen in a kia and deal with a kia service department.
+gene978 but nobody wants to be seen in a kia
Well, if you are to pull on a driveway to show of your new car and said, I just bought a new Kia! It wouldn’t be as shocking as you saying, I just bought a new Lexus!
My CT is up for lease term. My next one will be either this UX or BMW X1 or Benz GLA. Let's see what Lexus will bring it for me haha
Lexus will outlast Mecedes, Audi, BMW combined.
True.
People who buy these 'luxury' brands will probably trade in every 3 years :)
What an unoriginal comment. They'll have to last because it's predecessor, the CT200h, had low sales numbers. In the U.S., when introduced in 2011, 14,000 units. In 2018, 4 units! The UX needs to do better!
Agree with you 100% LEXUS is the Best!
Very tastefully done inside and out

Hey Tom, what kind of car should I buy?
Definitely not this one at $36K!
Very informative and detailed review Sir.
Looks like some significant blind spots with the front and rear pillars and the small rear window.
Not really. I would have mentioned it.
@@DrivenCarReviews Define significant.
Fantastic review! Subbed.
As an old school GTI owner I have to admit that I resent the designation of this class of vehicles as small crossovers. They're hatchbacks, damn it! Oh well, there's no point debating "marketing speak." And oh yeah, "Get off my lawn!"
For $44K I'd go with a Golf R instead (and maybe save a few bucks. The advantage Toyota provides is reliability even when ignored and abused.)
The hybrid UX is a plus but while I'm not a performance junkie I think I'd find the UX rather boring to drive.
@@K03sport You're right...and dammit, if I can't inspire envy at the country club what's the point of owning a car.
For many of us, VW is dead to us, and their reliability is poor.

Yes, the price is a bit steep for a small Lexus vehicle.
@@davidjym A reputation for reliability isn't free of charge.
@@stephenhendricks103 Unfortunately some car brands are expensive but not very reliable .........
You could easily get a nicely equipped NX 300 for that amount without trying too hard.

Great review

Beautiful green color.
Any color/colour other than grey is a bonus these days.

Maybe it time to stop calling them crossovers and just call them cars. They are what people want a car to be... a little more interior space, a little higher off the ground, and possibly more capable. At the expense of handling. But this is "car" according to most consumers.
2020 Toyotas will get Android Auto, Lexus... to be continued...
It is coming with the Lexus RX .. also with touch screen

Great review.

I find it interesting that the Toyota C-HR is available as a hybrid in other markets. Maybe it'll make its way to the other brand.
They can't build them fast enough for Europe.
They use nickel metal hydride instead of lithium-ion? That will be a problem long term for ownership. It's also a big corner cut by Toyota.
Wow, the QX30 is being eliminated. The best looking in the segment. I got to get me a used one.
No 4WD is a deal breaker for me. Back seat is too small even for a child carseat. I'll pass. CRV did a great job with interior room. Barring the turbo engine that has oil dilution problems, it's a winner.
42k and it has a stick to keep the hood up? You let me down Lexus.

Crossovers are such a blight and the luxury versions are the worst. $42k??
That's it. I'm going to start a faith called "Stinger GT's Witnesses". I gotta spread the good news of real hatchbacks and wagons.
#WeWantWagons
Wagons are way too big and a different segment. I do agree about hatchbacks but they need to be sub-compact in size in order to thrive in the city which is the point of these types of vehicles. Hence why the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HRV, Toyota CH-R, Hyundai Kona, etc are dominating in sales.
So, when is a hatchback not a hatchback? When the marketing dept calls it a 'crossover'. What did it crossover? Knock knock...'who's there?'... "hatchback!"... 'hatchback who?'..."Lexus UX!"
They'll build crossover hatchbacks, but not 'regular' car type wagons with the same technology. At this price point, it's better to go loaded, top trim pleabian brand sedan or one of VW's wagons in SEL trim.
I think the Corolla hatch would be a better option for people seeking Lexus reliability and fake leather.

Why car company love to add matte black plastic cladding especially around the wheel arch, it look ugly IMO.

Cecil L I completely disagree with you about the RX. Come on, it’s one of the best selling crossovers!
