I still wonder why car reviewers never review the T5 XC40 and then they go on about its lack of power. It would have had more power if you reviewed the one with the better engine.

Yet at similar numbers the Volvo feels sluggish. That's what we need to know in a review. The X2 also has a higher spec motor in other regions.

After watching hundreds of expert videos on brands, car company and their philosophy, and tips on maintenance and all. I came to the conclusion Lexus will be the car I would go for. I bought 2021 UX for my wife today. And in future, I would probably get IS for myself.

Neither of these vehicles are meant to be family cars necessarily. That been said, the back seats will keep newer than the front ones.
Also, these cars are most likely to be driven in urban areas. For that reason I would pick the most fuel efficient one.
I think the 250h UX Lexus would be my choice.

So after watching this video I decided to go with Lexus. For top tier Lexus (takumi - with all the options ; it was £400 a month) whilst Volvo B4p engine was 480.
£80 a month + expensive maintenance + shorter warranty + worse fuel made me easily give up Volvo ☺️

Imagine that: I have just returned from Lexus dealer - wanted to touch the UX because being Lexus it must be a quality car and it just looks good (exterior). Interior on the other hand was great in pictures (to me) but in real definitely not in my test, especially in ugly black trim. Practicality if this car is so much compromised, it is not even close to the Volvo. Back seat space , boot space in a different league Both on the Volvo and the back seats are to much steep (vertical). AWD...nobody was able to tell me how it works on the UX but per my recollection it is city oriented system, kind of auxiliary one rather than real AWD (yes, Gen V Haldex is real one) on the XC40. Interior of the Volvo is much nicer, although there are some details which are questionable. Lexus exterior is sharper and to me it just looks better but the Volvo is kind of unique animal.
From these two I would definitely chose the XC40 - overall more car in the car :)

I would go for the lexus. People say cvts are bad but they are reliable because of their simple design, good on acceleration as they keep the engine in powerband and are economical. In America fuel economy is not that big of an issue but in Europe it's far more important. Also I can see the ux holding its price well as all Toyota products do.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 5 років тому

Maybe luxury autos are better, but I find that normal autos are sluggish and annoying and I drive them in manual gear shift mode because it revs nicer with smoother engine/acceleration. CVT you push the accelerator, you get more power. Normal auto, you push the accelerator, you get some power to a point then it lags trying to stay in gear to save fuel. You push more and nothing happens, then all of a sudden it downshifts and jerks you forward with a big rev of the engine because the accelerator is pressed down so far...

bought the Volvo Inscription with Tech Pack. The ridiculous gearshift requires a double movement always thru N, eg PNR, of nil benefit. The GPS touts being so advanced it reads road speed signs but quite a retrograde really because it applies to school zones 24/7 rather than by satellites and a clock, making it dysfunctional nights and weekends for you and other drivers if you react to it. On that, beware of using the Speed Limiter function within cooee of a school any hour at your peril. Commenting on your road test, the Steering weight can be varied and saved to the key, as can the transmission but awkward to do on the fly for a short stretch. It has 4 ways to open and to close the tailgate - perhaps spending that much effort elsewhere might have created the pleasure we anticipated. Owners Manual is 621 pages of primary school content, little help. Many great features, if only not for the some that raise questions rather than excitement.

On that rare occasion that we need a big boot to haul a load from Lowe's, it is absurd for me to worry about that issue. I can rent a truck to haul my stuff for $19.95. As to why we bought the UX 200, we sought Lexus reliability. And in that department, Volvo can't match Lexus. And BMW is laughable and unimaginably expensive to repair.

"Competition is about to heat up. 2019 new models." ?
Good and interesting review. Can't remember the last time that I sat through a whole medium length review like this with my ears glued. You guys are among some of the best reviewers in my opinion, and your host/reviewer here is excellent. I subscribe to car channels from all over the world, and still come back to yours to hear your thoughts and opinions. Keep up the good work.
I have tested the Lexus and Volvo, and it's very obviously made for different market needs and groups of clients in them. The Lexus is the "best sized city" Crossover SUV here; going after customers who want a HR-V/CX-30 sized car, living in congested, tight cities. The Volvo would be better for long distance and highway drives - Geely influence and China needs, especially at this trim as you mentioned.
The Lexus would best suit smaller sized ladies and those families who have another car to use for carrying luggage and bigger groups. Ownership cost is one thing, and having owned all these 3 brands and from keeping in touch with car clubs, I can safely say that the Lexus "ownership experience" is the best here. BringMoreWorries and Volvo, well yes there have been some improvements, but they cost a lot of money to maintain and we have the same ridiculously priced options list here.
Lexus UX has a lot going for it and they have bigger CUVs anyway, and while handling and driving dynamics/fun used to suck, the Zoom-Zoom partnership mainly has fixed one of the brand’s few weaknesses. Anyway, I'm sure Lexus would come up with another slightly bigger Crossover SUV to sell alongside the UX, as everyone seems to be doing that now. (Please don't forget about us regular sedan, hatchback and sports car fans, haha)
Hope to see the UX or the next one with a Euro 6 turbodiesel, and I might consider getting one, after comparing it to the Mazda CX-30 Skyactiv-X.

The CVT is great. You don't buy these things for sports driving, surely (as much as they tack sports onto everything). And in low speed city driving and parking, the electric drive is more precise and direct than any automatic. Even manuals are better than autos for parking I reckon.
Personally I'd like someone to make a hybrid/electric wagon or something with space and comfort. Lexus/Toyota like to make more compact cars it seems

What a BS. How can you say that the Volvo feels more luxurious than the other two...?! The interior of the UX250h is so much richer than the XC40, feels so much more expensive. And I know it's a matter of taster, but the interior of the Volvo is not very pretty...

So the people you polled do not buy cars without first looking at them and deciding on what they like? Don’t believe it.
Of course we all have a budget but that doesn’t allay the fact that we look at what we like first.
I’m picking up my new XC40, B4P, Inscription Pro next week. 🤞 Awesome car and much more comfortable than my X1. X1’s a great car though. I’ve loved every minute with it. ♥️♥️
