I performed this at a Methodist Christmas show a few years ago. The pastor loved it. Raised many questions and a great discussion was had. Was Jesus a rebel . I believe HE was and is to this day.

I debated whether to request this song because it might be too controversial. It's just such a beautiful tune and thought-provoking on many levels. I'm glad you liked it.

Marc, I am so glad you requested this. It has a very profound message. It’s so accurate and will probably offend some but sometimes reality is frightening but it is what it is. 🌺✌️

I suggested it to my boss, and I think he got irritated with me. Lol. It's a great and true song about Christ. It pulls no punches.

Jesus was a rebel. Remember, he overturned the money-changer's tables in the temple. He did work on Sunday. He spoke with thieves and others who were considered not fit for society. When it came to the issue of Jewish dietary law, Jesus said to mind not so much what you put in your mouth, but mind what comes out of it. A rebel, indeed.
Jackson says that he himself is a heathen and a pagan, but he also says that he's on the side of the rebel Jesus.
I can't think of any other artist who gets down to what Christmas and being a Christian is all about.

Rebel Jesus is apt. The only expectations he met were his father's.

That song just melted me starting from my heart! I am overcome with emotion! Thanks to Marc (don't second guess yourself, man! Our hearts all need songs EXACTLY like this!) and to Harri for making this happen. Has really affected my day!

From Jackson's album, " The Next Voice You Hear" and The Chieftain's album, " Bells of Dublin", this is a Christmas Carol that has old world instrumentation that makes for a lovely melody and a beautiful Irish delivery.
Jackson presents this song in such a beautiful way the listener barely realizes they are being criticized in the first verse.
In the second verse he pays tribute to Jesus and notes slight cynicism, somewhere along the way, religion became about money.
More optimistic in the final verse, purely out of realism and compassion. The song is well written and captures the holiday scene, maybe upsetting to some, but a beautiful song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Marc. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦

I think in the verse about giving to the poor he is alluding to a quote from Dom Helder Camara: "When I feed the poor, people call me a saint. When I ask why they're poor, people call me a Communist." Something to that effect, anyway.

Thanks for playing this. I’m a Jackson Browne fan, and I had never heard this. On the one hand, I’m probably on his side on most political issues (within reason). However, even as a fan of his, I usually don’t enjoy his political songs as much as his other songs. He tends to loose some of the poetry that he’s famous for when he’s addressing a real-world topic rather than matters of the heart or the grander questions of existence. That said, please continue to play more Jackson Browne; I think you’ll find it rewarding. I always enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work!

I'm so glad you did this one. It's beautiful and who is going to dislike it? Only the hypocrites that he's talking about. Others are going to stop and think and do some self reflection.

Harri! NOBODY has reacted to Grand Funk railroads; "I Can Feel Him In The Morning". NOBODY! The song was released in 1971 during the Vietnam war. I was living in a Marine Corps barracks at the time, a NCO so I had a room to myself vs a rack in an open squad bay. I use to listen to this at night in a dark room so there would be no visual distractions. It is both haunting and chilling. The background vocals are surreal. The song begins with small children answering a question about God and death. Their responses are very entertaining which then segues into the song. YOU would be the very first person to post a reaction to this song but I'm sure that many more will follow your lead.
I chose you to dump this on because I believe your reactions to be honest and genuine. Please, consider it.

Oh, by the way, since others are pointing to Christmas songs from other artists, Nico and Vinz have a beautiful Christmas version of "One Song", very different version, performed live on television in a Norwegian church.

Whether Jesus was the son of God or not..the teachings are what keep us civil..Not the actions of men who profess to be profits..without morality man is doomed

Thank you, Marc. I hope you never feel compelled to apologize for your Humanity. If so-called Christians did more to emulate the teachings of Jesus ( as Kierkegaard suggests), our world would be so much better.

There's an interesting song by Dick Gaughan called "A Different Kind of Love Song." He writes and sings about social issues and as a result gets criticized by a lot of shallow people who don't get it and are always asking him why he doesn't sing nice love songs that make people happy. His response in the song is that he's not interested in making people happy for a moment with a pretty little song. He's interested in making MORE people happy by calling attention to the social injustices that prevent people from being truly happy. And, as Jackson says... he gets the same as the rebel, Jesus, persecuted and at one point banned from the US, because his songs were seen as too socialist.
