@@williamjackson6705 I heard in an interview that the song was cowritten (at least the chorus and the guitar riff at beginning) by a guy who writes for Rolling Stone Magazine. The guy couldn’t find the right lyrics so he asked Jackson (who was supposedly an acquaintance of his). Jackson supposedly had a hard time coming up with lyrics, but he persevered through …. and we all get to enjoy the final product! Again, this was from a musical podcaster that I watched on UA-cam. He sounded pretty convincing , but who knows

The song had such a gentle yearning and loneliness to it, so relatable.
Mr. Jackson Browne is highly underrated as a songwriter. As you can tell, he always spoke from the heart. His songs meant something to him. May I suggest "The Pretender", sir? Another one a lot of people can relate to. Thank you for recognizing his talent, & reacting to his music.
The Pretender, These Days (swhich he wrote when he was 16) and I Thought I Was a Child (covered magnificently by Bonnie Raitt) are my favorites.
Pretender was when he sold out...These Days and I Thought I was a child were off a great Album...Saturate Before Using was fantastic as well as Late for the Sky then Running on Empty was Olay but top 40 played just the last part and ruined the song and after Jackson s songwriting slipped to trite and disco

Jackson Browne has such a large catalog of excellent songs. All these songs listed by other commenters are worth checking out. I'll suggest four others that no one has mentioned which happen to be some of my favorites. Call It A Loan, In The Shape Of A Heart, Sky Blue And Black and Barricades Of Heaven.

I always think of Fast times at Ridgemont High when I hear this song. I think you’d like the movie if you haven’t seen it.
The timelessness of being nervous to talk to a woman(or man) you think is so lovely that they must be having a fantastic life that doesn't include you.
I think this simplicity is lacking in the music my kids listen to. It's a universal feeling. And not just about age.
As a widow, I still feel it when I see men I think are admirable.

@@debbiechang5781 it does seem we get consolation prize music. I like Silk Sonic ...the music but not the lyrics. Justin Bieber gives you peaches but nothing profound. It's a bit of a wasteland out there. My favorite singer covers some good songs but his voice is so powerful, most can't write songs for him. Check out Gabriel Henrique of Brazil. In English or Portuguese, or in his car, he is amazing. He is learning English but really doesn't speak it yet. "Run to you" might make you cry. If not, "Nada Alem da ti" will. Who can write meaningful lyrics for him?

Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "Tender Is The Night", "Doctor My Eyes" etc.

Harri in my opinion you give a very good breakdown on all the music put in front of you. I have been a fan of Jackson Browne for many years, I did manage to see him perform at the Royal Albert Hall back in the 80s. I can tell you it was a concert I will always remember.
