If you just want to check out SteamVR and don't have a Quest, I would say this is a nice method to do so, you don't need the base stations or controllers, it works without them. But, if you want 6-DOF we can get creative! What are your craziest ways of playing VR?

I 3D printed my own headset bought some lenses, and use riftcat; for controller i use nintendo wiimotes (Driver4VR); and sometimes fullbody tracking with a camera.
About ARCore positional tracking, somebody already made this (kind of), but doesn't work that good, and does crash after a couple of minutes of use. The app is called "VRidgeHeadTracking", and is available Google Play store.
There are also some other people that tried using a phone's accelometer, and send that data to opentrack. That one is called "Head Tracker for OpenTrack", also available on Google Play store.

I'm not too sure but it sounds like you can do this with a used oculus go especially now that the architecture has been unlocked for it. Pretty great if you just have one laying around.

Before I had my Quest I was playing VR by streaming Steam VR to my phone, I had 4 PS3 cameras taped to each corner of my ceiling and I used PS Move controllers for my hands and 6DOF head tracking. It was enough to get me to experience all vive games back in 2017.
There was a whole entire channel dedicated for this VR setup back in the day but has since become inactive. Look up Daley Tech, he was a huge supporter of the PS Move Service for Steam VR community. I was actually the one to design the icons for cameras and controllers for Steam VR in PS Move Service, it was a small contribution but I'm glad to have helped the VR community when it was most inaccessible.

what i dont get is why 'gaming' smartphone companies dont capitalise on this. they could design a high quality, comfortable headset that would complement the specific phone well kinda like an upgraded gear vr. they could use their own solution for streaming from pc or use other solutions such as amd link or riftcat. basically a n oculus quest that doubles as your smartphone. i feel like 'gaming' phones could be so much more than whatever tf kind of cashgrab they are now. they could at least have a slide out gamepad like the old playstation phone...

Cardboard vr enclosures seem to have a bad habit of being designed for very low nose bridges.
Index controllers and two base stations is 577 usd, from Valve, and they're always sold out.
This was an interesting experiment, though.
Edit: I actually played through the entirety of Psychonauts Rhombus of Ruin using this method, minus the 6dof and controllers. I just used my normal wired game controller. I switched between trinus and rift cat. At some points in the game the game expects you to move your head forward to look at things, which you obviously can't do if you only have 3dof, but one of the programs (I think maybe it was trinus?) had the option to move your head location forward and I was able to continue the game. It was incredibly ghetto.

I have owned every iteration of the gear VR and seen its evolution go from gear VR innovator to the quest 2. If you look closely at the architecture of the quest you'll see that it's built right on top of the gear vr's infrastructure.

Thanks for making this video and other videos like it. You're one of the few larger VR creators that features weird janky diy vr set ups. While not the best way to experience VR it's definitely the cheapest if you put in the effort and I think it's super important that people show VR doesn't have to be prohibitively expesive without relinquishing control to our corprate overloards. Not to mention I think the people working in and making stuff for the hacker side of vr deserve more credit and exposure for all the cool stuff they do cause this is essentially the roots of vr as we know it today.

I can say the one experiment I did try out is with Leap Motion. When you have the hands in the front, it works fantastic with tracking. Once out of the area, it doesn't work. It it has a wider rance, that would be cool and if there is a USB Transceiver you can hook it up to, that would work awesome.
I've done the Move/VRidge/Samsung Galaxy S7/Galaxy VR headset as my first and I agree, you do get motion sickness from it. This was before I got the Rift and Rift S

Idea. A open source %100 modular vr headset. Easy to disassemble and change parts. Half the weight in the back of the headset (battery/possessing hardware) with a thin light front (just the screens and lenses) with options like have the main hardware separately as a pack that you can wear as a backpack (if its a large unit) or in your pocket for a smaller less capable pod. All parts should be available and plans and software is free. What do you think?

This is how I got into VR in the first place - Kinect, phone with a broken digitizer, Dirver4VR. Eventually upgraded to proper VR, but it gave me access to experience Elite:Dangerous in VR, and it worked and it got me invested, which was the point of the experiment!
I'd certainly not start with anything like base stations though... bare minimum and only buy stuff which can later be used for something else. For me, a Kinectv2 made sense to get as it gives you access to cheap FBT down the line, and they can be found for next to nothing on ebay, with some hunting.

I love experiments like this. You did not, however cover one of the best parts of vridge with this setup. You can stream any PC game to the mobile headset and just have it in 3dof mode with an xbox controller (The headset just overwrites the right stick/mouse head movement). Some games work perfectly fine this way (Star Wars Squadrons type flight sims, any first person shooter or adventure like CSGO, skyrim, or vermintide 2. Skyrim VR is janky, and you might be better off playing regular skyrim like this.) This is something you usually cannot do with a 6dof headset, making this more versatile than getting a quest2. At least with this setup when you get a new phone, you also get a new headset, unlike the unfortunate souls still playing with a gen 1 HTC vive or original quest.
It is not as immersive, without a katwalk C, Vario, perfect hand tracking and a haptic suit, there's always something to break the immersion anyway, so this still seems like a viable way to explore open worlds to me.

I wouldn't mind seeing a video on the PS Move 6DoF phone VR.
It was one of my earliest 6DoF VR experiences as well, and though it was jank, it did work. My own setup was with two PSMoves, a table tennis ball with an LED crammed in, and three PS3 Eyes painstakingly taped up in the corners, and it barely worked but it was satisfying that I made it function at all.
I'm curious if the software behind it's improved enough to be remotely viable now.

you see, when you have terrible internet, but need that JUICY wireless vr, you have to think of some creative ways to get it to work. The best way i've done it is really rediculous. I have both my quest 2 and laptop connected to my phone's 5g 5ghz hotspot, and then connect my phone to my pc's 5ghz hotspot, practically tethering them directly to each other for little to no latency and great performance with virtual desktop. For reference, I have 6Mbit/s internet or around 500KB/s download speeds.

If you already have a steamvr setup and you'd want local multiplayer (in the same play space) I could actually see an use case for this. You'd obviously need a better headset (e.g googles daydream view is at least somewhat comfortable in my opinion) but I can't think of any game that has local multiplayer like that, neither do I know if steamvr even supports multiple headsets at the same time. Also you'd still need an additional pair of controllers.

  • @FishFish1995
    @FishFish1995 Місяць тому

    My opinion on the matter:
Perceived resolution doesn't only have to do with panel resolution. Contrast and color depth play a huge role on it...
When you have a smartphone with an OLED panel, you basically get a way better panel when compared to a quest 2...
Now when it comes to the rest of the headset, what would this video be like if you have found a better headset. Better lenses, better ergonomics... What if somehow you have found one with comparable FOV and lens quality to the quest 2? O_O
What then? Especially with the 4K OLED phone you were using, you should have a better visual experience.
While I do believe that full VR tracking with a smartphone is a bit overkill, I think that VR smartphone headset with the addition of a Bluetooth gamepad is a nice and chill option to enjoy many games...

  • @csakzozo
    @csakzozo 2 роки тому

I agree, it's cool. Would be nice to have a setup where the VR headset is just the "display" wnd our phones would do all the processing. Thinking like LapDock or or NexDock for Samsung Dex, but for VR. Phone would need cooling though but I am pretty sure the new Sd 8 Gen 1 12Gb could handle more than the XR2. 🤷🏽‍♂️
Also we could upgrade our VR headsets internals... But for that we need better displays, that's worth keeping for 5 years.

This would be a good experience with something like a Google Daydream View. I have one and it's actually comfortable, the stock facial interface is very soft. Then add Driver4VR, Trinus Daydream, an Xbox Kinect, and some Wii remotes/PS moves and you have a decent PCVR experience. Or use Vive trackers, base stations. Would you happen to know how I can get my Samsung Gear VR to work with the new S20 phones? So disappointing that Oculus/Meta discontinued support.

Do you have any special characters in your 5G wifi SSID? Some devices are unable to connect/detect wifi if there are.

The biggest problem i have with this kind of setup is 1080p phone and not enough zoom setting for my application (fov for simracing)
And the heat is pretty bad

i don’t know if you know how to fix this but when i connect my htc trackers for full body (off topic of the video btw) it always says that there’s to much controllers connect and won’t let me connect the third one on steamvr

Hmm , you could buy a bit more expensive Cardboard with 80-100 fov (plenty of that stuff everywhere) , this Vrbox is the worst shizzz on the market . Experience with good phone should be much much better. Still some nice DIY job bro ;-) Cheers !

Would this potentially work well with an old daydream headset and like a newer pixel? I feel like with higher end parts this potentially could work really well

Hello, if I have base stations and index controllers, how can I connect them to the phone, because I used the Irun program where I can use the phone as a headset, but is it possible to connect it to the base stations and controllers, I would be grateful for help, because my headset was Damn it for the 3rd time and I've had enough.

I'm currently using my phone and my joycons for vr and it's been a whole lotta fun with my cheap and stuttery 20fps phone as well as having emulated forward and backwards movements for the joycons
but today i just bought a quest 2 and it's really cool seeing you showcase this as one last goodbye with uhh
maybe just a bit pricer of my bootleg setup but it's still nice
