The Power of Taking Marriage Vows Before a Crucifix

- In Široki Brijeg, a city of about 30,000 people in Bosnia-Herzegovina, there is a zero-percent divorce rate.
What’s their secret? Is there something in the wine given out at receptions? No.
Actually, local tradition has husband-and-wife-to-be say their wedding vows over a crucifix, and then they keep that crucifix over their bed.
In this video, Jackie and Bobby, who followed this tradition when they said their vows, share how that crucifix over their bed serves as a daily reminder that they need to die to self in their marriage.
They also offer some tips on how to help your spouse deal with the everyday stresses of marriage, so you’re not dying to self alone.

We held a Crucifix during our vows because of the both of you!! We LOVE our Crucifix above our bed!
I just got married this past Saturday and we included this in our wedding ceremony. I think it’s very meaningful to say your vows this way. It reminds us that we said them to God. It’s a covenant between us and God. It reminds us that our struggles aka our cross is ours to carry and we need to learn how to appreciate it. We immediately placed the cross above our bed as a reminder of our vows. I like how you guys put it..that we need to be like Christ and die to ourselves like He died for us.
I had just read about this tradition a week back and thought it was beautiful, there is a bit more to be added, it originates from Srioki-Brijeg, Herzegovia a town where there have been no recorded divorces. This was the actual quote from that article -
" After the blessings of the rings, we put our hands on the crucifix and the priest took his stole and wrapped our hands together around the cross," Joe explains. "Then he gave us a special priestly blessing."
He continues " We have the crucifix up in our room, and it reminds us of our beautiful wedding day and our vows to each other. It is the focal point of our prayer life. In times of joy and times of sorrow, we always go together to pray before that cross. Eventually, God willing, our kids will pray before that crucifix."
I'm from India and even though this isn't part of the tradition that we practice in our Catholic churches here I would love to have this done on my wedding day.
YES BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA MY COUNTRY
Wow I did not know that about Široki Brijeg! My husband and I took our vows before the cathedral's crucifix... so we couldn't take it home😊 we have a small one at home but I should buy another!
My wife and I did this at our wedding in May!
I have this same exact crucifix in my room! It’s from Jerusalem! Wow!! I hope to use this one day during my vows with my future husband 😊🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️
Incredible learning from what you said about how Jesus used the cross as his marital bed with his most beloved wife the church. Giving without measuring or expecting.... Blessed be the couples who live happily by cross at their bed.
3:21 Mmm... **imagines being a monk** ... **smiles**
😂 lolol
Beautifully said...you die to yourself when you make the commitment to marriage - your spouse your family takes priority.
What happens when the other spouse doesn’t live in the same values...so we pick up our cross and move forward focusing on God first.
Greetings from Czech republic 💟 thanks for your message
My husband and I decided to have the Laso Rosary put upon us, and that too is a beautiful experience, and one I think every couple should do in addition to taking vows before the crucifix. Wish I knew about taking our vows before a crucifix (one that you can take home and hang over your bed is what I mean) before we got married in the church - we could have done this AND the Laso Rosary tradition - would have made it even more wonderful!
I’m learning so much with Ascending Presents! I’m so happy and thankful for all of you. Loving the content!!!
The face he made when he thought about being a monk was very honorable. That’s a good man right there
You guys are so funny and have a great, healthy relationship. Greetings from Croatia.
CONGRATS TO BOTH OF YOU
A GREAT START!
thank you! We wil do it next May 23. We had to cancel our reception because of coronavirus, but decided marry without guests because we want the sacrament. This video helped me to know it is the right choice.
Brazil
thank you for your sharing your experience guys! God Bless
DIOS BENDIGA SU ÚNICA Y VERDADERA IGLESIA CATÓLICA
May Jesus and Mary keep on guiding you both! Thank you for the inspirational videos! They sure help a lot! Greetings from Brazil!
Wow I just read about this online about a week ago.. Amazing to see a video on it now
Beautiful.
Love your videos-thank you!💛My parents have a very similar crucifix from Jerusalem!✨Yas for Hallmark Christmas movies!!✨
My boyfriend and I have one of those crucifixes, it is smaller with some opal type inlayed on the wood. The people who make them along with other beautiful things from Bethlehem came to our church to raise money by selling their amazing creations. Our priest blessed it for us, and having the walkway stones from where Jesus walked, olive tree bark, and a rose petal from the garden of gethsemane , and the incense from Bethlehem inside of the little glass windows makes me feel so close to Jesus. It was really neat to see that you have one as well. God bless you both!
I have the same Crucifix, just bought it a couple of months ago. That's so cool!
Love this~!
AMEN 🙌💗what a great message!🕊💗❤💕
I really like your videos. There so warm and encouraging. GOD BLESS 🕇 ❤ 😆 🌹
Please, more videos with there two! Big like here!
Said our vows at the alter, with a crucifix. 16 years later husband still had affair and left me and our children for the other woman. He chose to leave his faith because it didn't approve of his decision. There is no guarantee. It is just a reminder. Some people still make selfish choices. (He has since retuned to his faith and we are working on trying to reconcile.)
How are you guys now?
Like the idea of the crucifix at your wedding ceremony...
Check... Czechoslovakia. Lol. I laugh with that opening..and made my listening very openly and anticipatingly, although I'm single.
Thank you
Wonderful 😍😍😍
Thanks again Jackie and Bobby. Loving your content 😁
Aloha Jackie & Bobby,
Where can I found out more about this tradition?
I literally received that same crucifix for a birthday gift just yesterday...
I live in Široki Brijeg and I love your videos. But unfortunately you are wrong on the divorce rate. There are many divorced couples in the city. I don't know where you got your information. But I know some divorced couples, and there are many more documented. Your message is great, keep it up.
my man's right
me alone had 2 of them (divorces ofc)
This is common practice here in Hungary too. But it doesn't save you from a failed marriage. The cross is not a magic wand.
Thanks Bobby and Jackie.
Very cool, most would be irritated and weirded out by doing that, where do you find a Jackie, where do you find a Bobby (for the girls)?
You are a very rare couple.
God bless, Proverbs 31
Ever been to Medjugorje?
I got that same cross
Hi,
My fiancé and I are getting married in 2 weeks and We both heard about the wedding Crusifix and we both love it and really want it as a part of our wedding ceremony. The priest performing the ceremony is hesitant to add it as he is sceptic of its origin. Do you have any information on its validity in the Catholic Church and if any bishops or poppies approved the Wedding Crusifix.
God bless
Isaac
I have that same crucifix
Rev 18 coming soon
Our anniversary is this weekend where can I find our wedding vows
In the United States, Catholic wedding vows may also take the following form: I, ____, take you, ____, to be my lawfully wedded (husband/wife), to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.
I have absolutely no interest in relationships but I clicked on the video because I saw the crucifix and I HAVE THE SAME FLIPPIN CRUCIFIX
What?! Zero percent divorce rate and no priests are sharing this with engaged couples??
I know right !!
Are relationships like yours possible? How do we know they won't be a selfish person? 🤔
❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Is kissing the crucifix part of the 'Western Roman' rite? Is that allowed?
Its wicked.......why follow wicked traditions of the harlot catholic church?
I AM RACHEL HILLA I AM WHO I AM I SEEK MY BELOVED HUSBAND MARRIAGE IS VERY SACRED FOREVER AND EVER
Rachel Hilla Pray the ENTIRE Rosary. Pray for assistance.
My dad tried to murder my mom. He was tried and convicted of several assaults against her. Now that my mom is trying to pick up the remains of her shattered life, she's being hounded by believers. She must forgive him! Welcome him back into her life! Why? Because they got married in a church, and it would offend God if she, you know, tried not to continue beinging abused and assaulted.
Yeah. What a great and noble arrangement.
he looks like christian bale lol
anonymous
Lol - I was thinking the same thing!
The fact that there is a low divorce rate in Bosnia-Herzegovina is something that should not be celebrated. It is not because of any increased meaning in the marriage vows, it's because women in B-H are some of the most socially repressed in the world. The divorce rate is so low because women are not given the freedom to object to their marriages and are socially forced to remain married by their culture and religion. Everyone makes mistakes, even people in B-H, so it would be unnatural for everyone to remain married unless there was extreme outside pressure.
Is there a possibility, theres still good woman out there?
Juan Rubio Yes still some good men and women just can be hard to find sometimes
I will keep waiting I guess.
@@juanlopez3000 She is out there. Pray for her daily, and ask St. Anthony to bring her to you. Blessings!
@@gr8bskt Pray to Jesus, not saint anybody.
Weird flex but ok
I loved this presentation. It blessed my heart, but can you please not refer to Jesus as "this guy".
It would great if could stay subscribed to ascension presents, but not have to receive videos about this Jackie person
Great message, but I have to say, I have never heard anyone refer to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, as "this guy." I hope I never do again.
COLLEEN FOGARTY EASTON I agree, she did not give Christ the due respect His Name deserves, but it may just be her relationship with Christ that is more like a friend than as her Lord and King. I’m sure she normally gives His name the respect it deserves, she was maybe just being too friendly about Christ :)
My thoughts also, I wanted to comment but refrained from doing so, you cant refer to Jesus that way, but I'm sure she never intentionally meant any disrespect.
i wonder if hes happy with her appearance wise. i wonder if hes physically attracted.
@Annie Bach cause anytime i find a girl. i feel like im getting the short end of the stick. but i would think he would look at her and feel attracted. just thinking outloud thats all
Hi Jackie and Bobby! This kind of content is very much needed. However, please, please, please, do not refer to Jesus as "THIS GUY". You're talking about GOD. It made me feel sad to hear you use those words. Irreverence is rampant in our world these days and you have such an amazing opportunity to model reverence for your viewers. "At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow".
I agree. Love Jackie & Bobby, they clearly love Jesus, sure they were speaking affectionately and meant no disrespect. Still, like you said we are talking about God --the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. I felt sick in my gut each time it was said. They are still my favorite couple along with Jason & Chrystilina Everts.
I don't mean to sound rude, but Jesus didn't give his life for the church if he was resurrected 36 hours later. You wouldn't consider me having given you 1000$ if I give you the money, then take it back.
Tom Andrews he actually gave his life, no matter how long. Being Crucified (the cause of his death)was necessary for you to be saved. He had to know what death is to save us from death by resurrecting after 36 hours...
@@marchajj9941 Does Jesus have life now? If so then he might have given his life, but then he took it back. Again, you don't give up something if you take it back 36 hours later. Wasn't Jesus supposed to be God? Wouldn't God already know what death is?
Tom Andrews well... theologically speaking you can. Death is a phase not an eternal state. At least for jesus and saints (which means everyone in heaven).
@@marchajj9941 Ok, so then what did God/Jesus lose in the process? For God to have made a sacrifice with Jesus something must have been permanently given up.
Tom Andrews are we proceeding by childish logic. The only fact that the creator came down to be human and to be humiliated, tortured and killed as human, is, I guess a sacrifice no one could ever imagine. Pretty much he has given up all. And resurrection was a key in saving humanity.
My grandfather used to say his prayers with a tiger skull, but thats still not as gross as an idol of a corpse nailed to a roman torture device. This ranks up there with watching my japanese friend eat a boiled octopus 😝
