Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition (Steam)
Im not certain of all the changes from the previous 15th Anniversery games, but I think there are some new sounds in this version. The game data files seem to be based around a native resolution of 1280x800, although titlescreen intro do look like they could be 1280x1024. I have used the former to avoid cropping in game.
The game is pretty much the original PC Dos version but in hires and with remixed intro/outro music. Non of the ingae music from the console ports.
The game was played on hard difficulty but you wouldn't really know it if your used to the original versions of the game. Extra worm things in the first level which can mess you up when being chased by the beast. I have added a death scene montage at the end (Although is missing a few as I forgot to die at that point in the game Grin )
The game or savesystem requires you to complete the areas in a very specific order else it will forget your progress, and will add extra enemies to throw you off balance as you dont expect them to be there. The game can be quite unstable at times as well. If you already have the steam achievements, I found the game would crash where it would normally give you one.
Its still a great if very short game after all these years. In my view it just needs the cd audio of the SegaCD version to make this the ultimate version. -

I remember when I was 17 I was so mad at having the Amiga, after years of savings I remember I could buy a second hand one at a good price in the city that my family and I went for holidays for a couple of weeks, when we returned home after holidays, I remember I turned on the Amiga and loaded this game which was the first game I bought with the Amiga; all my family (parents, brothers and my brother's wife) were impacted by this game which looked like a movie, we were all night long in front of the TV. I remember that night I felt like in the top of the world, it was one of the happiest days of my life. Thanks AMIGA!!, Thanks ANOTHER WORLD!!.

Maybe the one and only iteration ever in the 2D realm of the entire era with so many unique and pioneering, advanced features that were only found much later in the 3D era.
-Vector graphics providing increased sprite size and unmatched animation fluidity both in-game and in cutscenes, with no compare to anything existing prior or during with the kind of available harware (one has to remember we're in '91.)
-Cinematic experience allowing for simultaneous, realtime action on multiple levels like pre-scripted animated events happening in the foreground, playfield and background and sometimes bleeding into the player's action like your alien friend breaking a window to join you, helping you get out of a desperate situation from a vent above (provided you free him before) culminating in shootouts were shots coming from off-camera can actually kill you and you have to defend and take cover against via your forcefields. That level of interaction with massive , chaotic situation only appeared in next-gen FPSs like Call of Duty.
-Pseudo-scripted events allowing a real dregree of intervention from the player like a hostage situation involving your ally in a room where you have multiple choices to free him at your disposal, or other where you barge in a tactical room filled with an enemy squad, where you can choose to spare or kill one in particular that first tried to lock you out, or get killed if you get too close.
-Breakable environnement ransforming the way the player can interact with it (like flooding an entire area that you first have to flee to avoid drowning)
-Seamless integration of cutscenes and action sequences from one level to the other, a feat unmatched by any games in the entire decade left of 2D.
-Multi-camera sequences involving a massive, believabled crowd in a gigantic arena sequence where you can trigger multiple animations and events depending on the buttons you hit before ejecting. Again, darn '91, such feat was beyond groundbreaking, I mean it. It was not supposed to happen yet.
Ok the closest to that would be Super Metroid and to a lesser degree, Super Contra on the Snes, but still none of the two can really equate the cinematic events triggering routinely in AW.
To think that on top of all the above, that game was essentially developed by one guy, old-school.
That title was a seismic shift event in the gaming sphere, and spiritually spawned several 2,5D/3D that appearing sometimes a decade or more later. It that only became a cult years after its initial relase that saw certain success but not as much as it deserved, as it was burried a bit under a montain of titles on so many platforms saturating the publicity space, as one has to keep in mind that the late 80s/early 90s were also in themselves a paradigm shift in the making from 8 to 16 bit gaming.

So the first comments on youtube of a video game is, "This game needs a remake" and one of the few times in gaming history the remake is ACTUALLY better than original, it's, "this game deserves a movie." I've had enough of remakes and knockoffs. I want some original games and movies again for G.D. sake.

Thanks so much for putting this together; I don't think I could have ever completed this game. Had it when I was a kid and revisited it a number of times over the years, but it (esp. the original version) was tough-as-nails and there was just no way I was going to get through it. It's art style, sound, and THAT CINEMA FEEL is just breathtaking though...so getting to just watch and take it all in was quite a treat. :) I really applaud the solo dev that made this; talk about vision and execution through to completion! :)

    • @Okazu84
      @Okazu84 Рік тому

I posted pretty much the same idea in a longer version, I totally agree with your take. AW is an underrated gem of fundamental importance to 2D gaming. It was a culmination in itself that went way too unnoticed by the majority, burried under tons of games that were getting produced on way too many machines at a time of a new golden age of gaming in the early 90s.
And about the difficulty, once you get the hang of the shoot and cover, specially when you learn that stacking up several pistol shields yields a nearly unbreakable and longer, thicker one, 50% of the difficulty vanishes (yet it remains demanding, intense but fun).
You should try the Snes or Megadrive version mate, it is even harder as Nintendo and Sega overtly stated at the time it had to come to Asian standards as well ahah xD

The remake is much better 'cause it's easier (more checkpoints). If you're ready for some pain play the original version.

It's funnier because the alien's voice becomes a much higher pitch afterward, if you missed it.

Lucky for him that the aliens have their nuts in the same place as humans, I remember a Star Trek episode where that wasn't the case

The 20th has ambience for most areas (like water drops in the cave) and mostly new sound effects.

Fuckin hell this game sucks af to play it. I regret the 7€ I've spent to buy it. It's nice only if you watch a gameplay with the 100000000000 deaths cut.
