Honest Outlaw reviews and tests all types of guns.....long guns, shot guns, handguns. SPN does almost exclusively budget carry and pocket guns. Not exactly the same.....I like both channels alot.
Gbguns is highly underrated and does the most thorough explanation and testing. Also Who Tee Who is another good one. He doesn't post as much but most of his content is great and he covers everything. Plus if you have a suggestion for any content you wanna see, he always responds to his fans in the comments. Overall nice guy.
Subscribed! Thank you for presenting your comparison without all the over the top, loud, unneccesary, pyro- techniques. Just straight ahead, no-nonsense, usable, information. Well done. Bravo, from this 60 year old lady!!! ❤❤❤
The GX4 Tenifer finish on the slide with show wear but unlike a simple surface coating this will still not rust. Love that it is built for go more than show.
Thank you. One of my daughters carries the Max 9 and has for a couple years. We are quite pleased with it. The front sight is very very easy to acquire quickly. Trigger is good but could be a shorter reset. She carried a Shield for a few years and liked the trigger better. Hundreds of rounds through the Max9(115 brass and aluminum & brass 124 + some 124+p HST) not a hitch. My wife may trade her Shield 45 for a Max9 some day.
The max 9 has been in my carry rotation for about a year now. It’s my work carry and I’m a jman electrician. The finish from holster wear, sweat etc. is my main gripe. Had the trigger upgraded, after 1300 rounds the only “malfunction” has been the slide not locking back after the last shot.
Early in 2023, I was on a search for a new carry pistol. Three important criteria for me were concealability, capacity & economy (didn't have a big budget to work with). I narrowed it down to the Max9 and the GX4. I owned Rugers and hadn't own a Taurus at that point. So I wanted to like the Ruger. And when it came to the sights, the Ruger Max9 was the clear winner. As far as concealability was concerned, it was a draw. But... ...the Max9 rattle was something I just couldn't dismiss, no matter how hard I tried. So the Taurus got the edge on the Ruger in the fit & feel category. Though the capacity comparison was close, here too the Taurus won the category. And the GX4 was the more economical option. In March of 2023, it sold for $325, if I recall correctly, and there was even a $50 mail-in rebate on it. Taurus was the clear winner, and the choice I made. It runs, and isn't too snappy, certainly manageable. It makes for a great pocket pistol; it rides in a DeSantis Gunhide Nemesis holster, #N38BJE1Z0 (covers the trigger guard, the draw is quick and smooth, and the holster stays put). It has been my EDC for 15 months. I enjoyed your video review. I would have enjoyed it even more if you had made this video a year earlier. 😏
I love my Max 9 pro, I recently added a Galloway short stroke trigger and the pistol became even better. So far I have only had 1 malfunction but I believe I caused it and I did it within the first 70 rounds down range. The prefer the Max 9 for long trips because it remains comfortable while concealed.
I’ve been watching SPN so much lately as sub compact and micro’s are primarily my thing. As for other reviewers, they too often like to review high end pieces that few would carry let alone would buy.
Another excellent video.. I have both of these as well as a Shield Plus and really like them all.. The Taurus has the best feeling grip in my hands but I wish it had a thumb safety even though I am not a fan of them but in this case a pocket gun with a single action trigger it would be a good addition.. I did not like the factory trigger on the Ruger so I installed a Galloway Precision flat-faced trigger which is a major improvement.
I have both of these and carry them everyday depending on my mood. The Ruger is a perfect candidate for the Ruger Ready dot that runs on fiber optics and no battery making it a great daytime carry. The GX4 accepts the TLR-6 and a wide variety of dots for the T.O.R.O. version. Topped with a CYELEE makes it a great affordable carry option for night time or all day
Dude i feel you. Gx4 might be a favorite. It's my baby and i love it, but i find myself carrying my Ruger more, and i don't really know why because i trust both.
I haven't tried the Max 9 yet but i've been carrying the GX4 for over a year now, and Taurus let me fix the drop-safe recall myself for a SDI class project. My GX4 has over 1000 rounds through it without a single issue, except once when I did a mud test (not on video) so that doesn't count. I don't mind the shitty finish because it's just a self-defense gun, not for showing off. PSA: If you unholster and reholster it a lot, the areas where the finish rubs off will start to rust. I fix that by rubbing a thin layer of synthetic motor oil on the slide each time I clean it.
Good review, Gx4 and Ruger 9 are great guns , i own both have concealed carry many guns over 60 years, own a few Taurus and Rugers - S & W, i now carry Glock 43x and mos 48 and their not over priced that a working man can afford and a Rock Island 45 is in the same range as the budget guns , the budget gun are of same quality as the more expensive guns
I love both my GX4 and my Max-9. I tend to shoot my GX4 a little better than the Max-9 but I get a decent group with either one. Thanks for the comparison and have a good night.
I have a hellcat a p365 and a gx4 and the gx4 trigger is almost perfect… Define wall and before it breaks there is no sponge or movement whatsoever unlike the other 2 and it was almost half of the money… To be fair a soonest I got it I had to send it to Taurus because it didn’t work correctly but now it’s flawless
I have the GX4 it’s a good shooter and the I have the Ruger Max9 which I haven’t shot yet but I like how both feel in the hands and their capacity and their price range are great too also because a lot people can’t afford Expensive gun and it’s in the price range for alot of people who needed too defend their self.
Your description of the GX4 handle is making me want one even more. The G3c didn't fit my hand well until I bought a Hogue grip, so that's a plus to me. I've been thinking of the GX4 XL as a better option for concealment, but the Max 9 sure looks nice too. There are so many good micro compacts at similar price points, tough to chose one.
I’ve ran the gx4 with the hogue grip for months but i recently took it off because it defeats the concealment purpose. Love the grip but will print iwb
@@Ffs00911 What I want next now is the Kimber R7 Mako. It's thinner than the GX4 and has the handle hump I need to fit my hand. It's smaller than the G3c, yet has a longer barrel length and more capacity for the size. It's really not that much more money since it's optics cut and has better parts, making the Mako better in every way, except you lose the restrike feature for easy dry fire, but that's a fair trade off for a smaller gun that shoots with less snap.
I had a handgun that did not have slide rattle. The damn thing was a connect 45. It constantly had issues with failure to feed. After putting about 600 rounds through it, the FTF problem went away and the gun worked flawlessly then it started to rattle a little.
Have one on my bodyguard .380 and it went on easily. Bought one for my shield and could not get it on, ended up tearing the grip sleeve. Went and put Talon rubberized grip tape which feels very good.
I like my GX4 with Tungsten Cerakote slide. I wish they were available with stainless slide. Very good little gun other than finish. PVD finish might be ideal.
Great comparison, I have a gx4 and the only issue I’ve ever had is fail to feed first round with some hollow points. Critical defense seems to run good though. Other than that, it’s a solid shooter for a micro. Feels more expensive than it is
I own both of these and my only issues with GX4 are 1) The recall so I won't EDC trust it 2) My front sight I've replaced and it's ever so slightly crooked no matter what I do and near impossible to get a grip on with my standard glock front sight tool. The Max9 is my first pocket carry, no complaints.
@@adog3336 Mine was not a part of the recall the first check and it was the 2nd check. I had to pay my own s&h despite Taurus saying they would cover it for me (I never received the shipping label). Just a bummer but it's a range toy now
I put tritium sights on my GX4 and they're spot-on accurate. Since I don't have a sight pusher, I gently tapped it using a hammer and a small block of wood/2x4, and wrapped the slide with a shop rag. I also fixed the drop-safe issue by gluing (blue loctite) the firing pin block spring in place because it could come unseated and flip sideways...too much wiggle room. I've also dropped mine accidentally twice BEFORE the recall with no issue, and did several vigorous drop tests from every angle after fixing the recall. I literally trust my GX4 more than my Colt NM 1911.
I've owned both. I did like my GX4, but though improved, Taurus has not got the customer customer service customer up to Rugers. I did swap out the trigger on my MAX 9 to a "G" brand short stroke trigger and that made a huge difference. Both are good, but for me, I have a bit more faith in the Ruger.
My g2c is the best money ive spent on a gun and the sr9 was the worst. I would go with the gx4 toro. That ruger is really cool though. I own a ruger 10/22 rifle wood stock. Its my go to for when I just want to have fun or when i take new shooters. Great gun to learn how to shoot and its incredibly accurate. Semi reliable as long as it is clean and wet. 22lr ammo i think is the issue tbh. The quality over the years has been so shitty on alot of bulk 22. And its dirty. ❤ I shot my 10/22 about 500 rounds over 2 days in a basic marksmanship class (Appleseed foundation) it ran rough day two but i didnt clean or lube it at all after day one. Made it through the second day still and got to experience malfunctions in competition 😂 most fun ive ever had shooting in over ten years of shooting. Cmp service rifle matches are cool too. M16a2 or an m1 garand iron sights 100 yards designated timed courses of fire in different shooting positions. Really a good test of your skills as a marksman if you are a confident rifle shooter.
You got quite a few carry friends (your collection) there. Gettin' me hooked on these carry guns. I just got a GX4 recently. Haven't had a chance to work with it yet, but I will. I also have the G3C and a Springfield Armory XD-S Mod. What I don't recall ever seeing on your channel is a Beretta APX Carry. I have the A1 newer version. I had doubts about it at first (trigger felt cheap) until I spent some time with it. Not as snappy as I thought it would be. If ya ever tried one, lemme know your thoughts on those. I've grown to like mine, so t's a keeper for sure. Anywho, keep them good vids comin'.
@@matthewshelton9573 That was my first impression, but I kinda got used to it. It's pretty smooth running for It's size. Plus I can use the same holster for my GX4. Nice bonus.
Please do a video of you taking a scotchbrite pad and lightly removing the flat black finish on the GX4 to show the better finish under it. It is like overspray on the slide now.
If I buy a Ruger or a GX4, I think I would automatically consider a bottle of Cerakote to be part of the expected cost. Bought some LCP parts for a friend recently that looked perfect (brand new) in the bag and although they weren't oily, I assumed that they were oiled and would be fine for at-least a week until I shipped them out and my friend received them... but I had them for 6 days and the entire surface of the slide was covered in rust by that time. Apparently the seller cleaned the parts and didn't oil them or something like that, because they rusted in the bag without it ever being unsealed. (...and I was certain that a slide could not rust sealed in a bag like that, because there's not enough oxygen to sustain continual corrosion like that). I know the GX4 won't rust like a Ruger at all, but that finish is so soft and gets damaged so easily that I just wouldn't trust it to protect the firearm (especially long term)... and I'm one of those people that loves original finishes and tried to never damage an original finish on a firearm unless it's really damaged/worn. These are probably the main guns I would strip a brand new, perfect, untouched finish off them and have them Cerakoted or refinished.
@@leonardpiskacsr.7111 That's good. I've seen a couple of them cerakoted, but I'm not sure if they were coated by the factory or if they were cerakoted by a reseller. Have seen some Coyote and Tungsten one's for sale that I think were OEM, but I'm not sure. Now they have the Graphene coating and that could end up being one of the most durable coatings ever. I hope Cerakote starts working with graphene and Borophene too. They're two of the most durable materials ever and are far grater in strength compared to diamonds and just about any other material, natural or manmade.
Nothing against Ruger, I picked the GX4. No regrets. I got a TORO slide for it when they came out. If I want to carry a longer barrel, I carry the 365XL. I have a LCP Max, had a EC9S too. I like the GX4 trigger better.
I have never had a problem with a 3 to 550$ Ruger I've had P90,SR40C, AMERICAN .45 COMPACT security 9c, LCP and now I've ordered the Max 9 with Ruger ready dot
Strange mine is slightly. Worn too but there's no rust. I've carried a usp compact, shield, Glock gen2, all of them rusted on me in one way or another.
This is the one Ruger that I can't stand behind and this is the one time I would probably go with the Taurus over the Ruger. I'm a Ruger Fanboy, it's my budget brand of choice so hear me out. I've owned every configuration of LCP including the LCP MAX and 22lr varient, I carried an lc9s for 5 years straight. It was my first carry gun. I put over 4,000 rounds through that gun before I retired it. For my Canik tp9 elite sc. I still own an ec9s and a red hawk chambered in 45 Colt. So I'm hear to say that in my opinion and in my experience the max 9 is a piece of junk. The tolerances on that firearm are sooooo loose it's unsettling. The 3! that I shot ran like a champs! and It was accurate, ergonomic enough, all of the controls were reachable, I definitely like the sights... But still... I've shot a lot of firearms in my day and I have never in my life shot a such reliable firearm that made me fee asl uneasy as the Max 9 did. Ruger can say they did that they did that on purpose all they want but all it really did was make me concern for the firearms longevity. That's all I can really say. I hope you'll at least understand that this comes from a place of experience with the brand. I now carry a shield plus. I won't lie I had a problem with the 12 round magazine right out of the box it would only hold 11 rounds out of the box. So I know that all brands have their problems. like I said the ones that I shot were 100% reliable there was just something unsettling about the loose tolerances for me. I really love your channel bro keep it up.
I just picked up the Taurus GX4XL TORO with Riton optic. It’s a sweet shooter. It has one little quirk. The slide holds back on the last round but it slams shut when I eject the mag. Any idea what’s up with that?
Haven't shot a Max9 but my first 9mm ever was a Ruger LC9 and it was by far the worst trigger of any gun I've ever shot. If they fixed that in the 2 newer models then its probably a good little gun but i dont see it even being close to a GX4 wich imo is Taurus best handgun yet
I own both, and really like both. Ruger Max 9 really surprised me, being as good as it is. Ruger engineers confirmed to me that it's basically an LC9s with a face lift and double single stack mags for 10 rounds. I love the GX4 sights, they just draw your eye right to where they need to be. I wish the GX4 trigger was a little less heavy on the wall, but it's nice and defined as you said. Just heavy. Also own a P365XL, a Glock 43 that runs 8+1 reliably and remains OEM magazine pinky size , and just got the GX4 Carry. G2C, G3C, and a G3, I like Taurus guns, too. I love these little guns that are awesome. Your review is pretty decent, sir. I would recommend against dropping that slide on empty; yeah it probably won't hurt most guns, but it's akin to rocking or slapping the cylinder closed on a wheelgun. It's not ideal. Don't get mad, just saying.
Yeah dropping the slide on empty is nothing like whipping the cyclinder closed on revolver…..totally safe to do. It would be useless otherwise the recoil would destroy the slide.
@@VetSGT I'd still argue that it's not really the intent of the design. Stripping a round reduced the slide's forward velocity a bit. Of course, the gun is designed to do it, when it's loaded. I get the differences of a cylinder crane with torsion stresses being put on it, being very different from steel slamming forward into steel. Most guns probably can do it, but I try to avoid it, if I can. Of course, you're free to do it however you wish.
With everyone carrying 13+ capacity revolvers are truly no longer logical to EDC, unfortunately. Kimber makes a good snub though, and the judge is a whole lotta fun (from Taurus)
I like the GX4 better than the Ruger, and I trust it enough to use it as my EDC. Also, you did great with handling the guns....UNTIL you picked up the GX4 to drop the mag...Then it all went to Hell after that! LOL! Just joking! I like your videos and I seldom ever miss one. Keep 'em coming!
I HAD the Taurus GX4 and it was disaster. Sent it back to Taurus four times in which they fixed those related problems. However after getting it back the fourth time, the dam thing misfired twice. GX4 is now gone!!! By the way I also have a G3c which has been flawless for over 2 1/2 years...
I choose the Taurus G3C over the Ruger Max-9 because Ruger puts in a skinny, flimsy looking trigger, I much prefer a fatter trigger like the G3C has. All of Ruger's Polymer pistols seem to have skinny, weak looking triggers, the only Ruger carry I really like is the LCP Max, probably the best .380 mouse gun ever. But 9mm fired from a little pocket gun sucks, loads of recoil and a serious lack of accuracy. Better to do .380 in the sub-gun department and save the 9mm for the mid sized pistols. And another thing I hate about Ruger's guns is the lousy 3-dot sight system, a Glock style 3-sided square or an all black rear notch with a white dot front is a far-far better sight picture. I love Ruger's revolvers, they're the best.... but their polymer pistols SUCK, except for the LCP-Max.
I assumed his mouth was doing the talking even though all I saw was his hands. Joking aside, your comment was far and away more cringe than his hand jesturing while talking. FFS, he did a great job comparing the two. If you can do better with your masculine quiet hands, put a video up.

I've also dropped mine accidentally twice BEFORE the recall with no issue, and did several vigorous drop tests from every angle after fixing the recall. I literally trust my GX4 more than my Colt NM 1911.
@@adog3336bingo. It’s like they were hoping someone got hurt just to justify their Recall argument Smh. I’ll take S&W 2.0 any day over a Sig.
Have the GX4 , just a good firearm from Taurus. Have had no issues. Trigger is really good. Good job Taurus
I always watch you first very informative...
Taurus has the best factory or one of the best grips Im fan of Taurus budget and 100% trust worthy first gun I had was smith and Wesson
Those berettas are awesome aside from the absolutely horrendous trigger.
@@matthewshelton9573 That was my first impression, but I kinda got used to it. It's pretty smooth running for It's size. Plus I can use the same holster for my GX4. Nice bonus.
Do you practice with your FN reflex eny or alot?? I just bought one haven’t tested it yet but I love it so far.
I’ve shot both. I preferred the GX4, so that’s the one I bought.
My GX4 came Cerokoted love it!😊
@@leonardpiskacsr.7111 That's good.
I know you do a lot of EDC videos, what fullsize guns do you like? What do you have?
Nothing against Ruger, I picked the GX4. No regrets. I got a TORO slide for it when they came out. If I want to carry a longer barrel, I carry the 365XL. I have a LCP Max, had a EC9S too. I like the GX4 trigger better.
I have never had a problem with a 3 to 550$ Ruger
I've had P90,SR40C, AMERICAN .45 COMPACT security 9c, LCP and now I've ordered the Max 9 with Ruger ready dot
Curious, where do you sell the guns you bought and don’t like.
Strange mine is slightly. Worn too but there's no rust. I've carried a usp compact, shield, Glock gen2, all of them rusted on me in one way or another.
Max-9 just came out with a 4in barrel version. Tempted by that as easier to shoot and aim.
Wait, what? That would be RAD.
ETA: SHUT UP. Just googled it and found it. Damn that's COOL
On the ruger does your slide button work?
I just picked up the Taurus GX4XL TORO with Riton optic. It’s a sweet shooter. It has one little quirk. The slide holds back on the last round but it slams shut when I eject the mag. Any idea what’s up with that?
sounds like a slide release assembly problem , they will replace it
I have the max 9 gx 4 doesn't do anything for me
Why does the finish on taurus blow??
SPN, with the recall and issues that the Taurus GX4 has, would you trust it for carry?????
As long as you test yours thoroughly with your carry ammo, then yes!
Taurus gx4 or cz p10m?
Gx4 vs the GF9
I got you!
That’s a good one facts I want to see that too 🫡💯
I own both, and really like both.
@@VetSGT
I'd still argue that it's not really the intent of the design.
I’m 25th I believe. So I have that going for me. 😅
Do you like any revolvers for EDC?
With everyone carrying 13+ capacity revolvers are truly no longer logical to EDC, unfortunately. Kimber makes a good snub though, and the judge is a whole lotta fun (from Taurus)
How is that ruger ready dot holding up dude?
It still runs! Not the most accurate red dot but it’s fast and easy to shoot with!
Where I’m from the GX4 costs more than the Glock 47
Yeeeeee🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
The max 9 just felt cheap to me. Felt like the trigger was going to break, literally.
Why are your videos so bright
Taurus has a new owner since 2014. New owner, new minds, new guns.
I trust the ruger better/ me 2.
don't worry about the complainers. If they don't like free, educational content, let them go pay for it somewhere else.
Some people just like to whine about everything
Please turn off the auto brightness…
Turn your brightness down.
How about rust?
My gx4 has a more silver looking finish and it does not get scratched up like yours.
Newer models come in midnight bronze or silver. How you liking it so far?
@@MarksuckerburggMine came in a tungsten silver Cerakote...Love it 0 wear issues!
The Gx4 simply has better customization options
So please define what an “average person” is?
The Taurus g3x is a better comparison.
Rugers just don't feel good. I've never held a Taurus
Rusty ruger
gx4's are not $240 lol
I have seen them on different sales or rebates for $210 -$230 You have to search, but they are out there.
Got mine for 190 after tax. Came with a holster, 2 mags, and a viridian red laser. From Marksmans Shooting Sports (fellow youtuber, check him out)
I live in Montreal. Walking with nothing is much better than with a handgun .
Why are you here??
Until you are Violated by a knife wielding Thug!😂
Second lol

I like ruger! Don't trust taurus!
hand talking is cringe and feminine
What’s your point? Don’t watch it then
I assumed his mouth was doing the talking even though all I saw was his hands. Joking aside, your comment was far and away more cringe than his hand jesturing while talking. FFS, he did a great job comparing the two. If you can do better with your masculine quiet hands, put a video up.

Both guns have a horrible finish. The taurus is the worst.
Nope got mine in Tungsten Steel Cerakote best finish of all my guns for durability and wear!!!
