Reviewing RICK STEIN'S RESTAURANT BREAKFAST!

  • The final episode of my visits to one of Rick Stein's restaurants. Today, I'm in Sandbanks at his restaurant but today I'm going for a bit of breakfast as it's the only restaurant in his chain to serve it. My last visit to Stein's Fish and Chips didn't go so well so I'm hoping this is much better!

The tea first / milk first thing came from the days of domestic service. Upstairs the family would use fine china / porcelain, which sometimes would shatter if hot tea was poured into it first, so milk was added first to temper the heat of the tea. Downstairs, domestic staff used clay mugs, so the tea could be added first with no danger of shattering...

Nice Arnold Bennett Quotes: 1) "Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission." 2) "It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is from the top." 3) "There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul." 4) "The moment you're born you're done for." He wrote 34 novels, 7 volumes of short stories, and 13 plays, and a daily journal. He wrote realism for the general public. I guess Virgina Woolf knocked his writing because it was realism and not modernist writing. (I like Virgina Woolf, but if she did that, shame on her.) Knowing this, it is nice they named an omelette after him. It was his favorite omelette at the Savoy. I also had to look up Gordon Bennett. Location is great and food looks good.

Tea first milk after.....that's how it's done on the tea plantations.....
The reason milk was put in fist in the 18th Century was due to the tea cups being very delicate China but as time moved on and tea became more popular, the tea cups & mugs became thicker so it depended on prefrance

Arnold Bennet was born in 1867, in a house on Waterloo Road in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, the Ceramics capital of the world. No one else can make the China so thin and delicate as the the skilled people of the Potteries, but times have changed and most people want cheap far eastern rubbish not quality. These thicker tea cups and mugs are imported and are of poor quality, that's why most of the factories in the Potteries have now closed, theirs still a few but nothing like the thousands their used to be. I live now approximately 2 miles from where Arnold Bennet was born.

    • @shrinewitch
      @shrinewitch 2 місяці тому

Why do you think it's called China, John? Maybe the far eastern rubbish is where it comes from and there's good stuff there too. Food for thought! 😂

Hi Gary, really glad you and Rick are "mates" again! 😁. The location was fantastic and even though I can't eat fish, the dish looked absolutely fabulous and glad you enjoyed it. A bit surprised as well by the fact that Rick Stein had a North African dish on the menu, but that as well looked really good and with some good bread to mop it up with, even better. Another fantastic review, mate, and congrats on reaching 110K subs, it's a new milestone for the channel. Really happy for you and your son. The wife and I are headed out for dinner in a Michelin star restaurant tonight, first a few drinks, to celebrate our anniversary. The sun is shining and it's nice and hot, do not miss London at all. Hi Gary,
Two things I like about this channel
    1. You are 100% genuine on your reviews, it comes across in how you express things and your mannerisms.
    2. It doesn't matter where you are / what you review, there is no bias. It can be a single restaurant we've never heard of, or a large chain / well known celebrity chef.
What the reviews seem to have shown though is that the name above the door doesn't matter, its about the staff on site and how they work (or don't work) as a team. You can 100% guarantee that the name above the door is not cooking your meal.
It would be nice though if they had quality control across them to ensure consistency, as after all, its their reputation on the line. Customers can always choose to go somewhere else. Case in point - Jamie Oliver.
What would be even better is if they went around randomly to their franchises and cooked in the kitchen every now and then, and as a customer you only knew after you had eaten.

Wow wow wow! That looked amazing Gary. What a brill breakfast. Both of them. Rick deserved his 9/10. I’m glad cause after the padsto experience I wasn’t expecting much. You are always honest so I’m surprised you took flak from viewers saying you have something against him.
A thing popped up on UT saying you earned $1900 a month. So what? Whose business is it? It’s not exactly a get rich quick scheme. Great as always. 👍

    Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman
Well our Rick is a very Lucky man that your giving him another bite at the cherry.
Well this place looks lovely inside, but the breakfast opening hours are a bit limited at only 8-30am to 10-30am.
That first dish you had (Omelette Arnold Bennett) looked amazing, to which not sure if you know but Arnold Bennett was an English novelist who wrote over 30 books, and a number of short plays.
When in London Bennett liked to eat at the Savoy Hotel's Grill.
He often ate an omelette made with smoked haddock, and this has become known as the Omelette Arnold Bennett.
The Omelette Arnold Bennett has remained a Savoy standard dish ever since.
My wife actually has one of his Books called 'Anna and the five towns'
Your second dish the Shakshuka (of i believe Tunisian origin) certainly seemed to get your thumbs up, but it may just be me, but im not a pepper and spices person for breakfast, but who knows i could try it and change my mind instantly.
Score wise i agree 9 was fair, especially as there was enough for two.
    Chris.

As always Gary, a really interesting watch. At the beginning I thought it was going to go badly, but your honest and fair approach to those interesting dishes was a joy to watch. As a 'foodie' and an enthusiastic home cook, its fascinating to be able to visit these restaurants with you, without the effort of leaving my chair! Cheers!!

That is very kind to say, Pete, On this occasion, I didn’t have the usual just to mix things up

What a great review, and what a beautiful location. I would love to try the Arnold Bennett dish as well. I am glad that your breakfasts (two) were a success. If I am in the area, I shall certainly pay it a visit. Thank you very much for taking us along.

love your uploads Gary.., but I think your cameraman should show more of the places you review personly I think it would give a better feel of your surroundings for the viewer. Great stuff👍
