I think ALL of us should really think about how we support these celebrity chefs and realise how good a living they are having off of our money. It's time to totally ignore them and support good HONEST local businesses only.
I once emailed Rick Stein to say he was giving Cornwall a really bad name by saying on TV that all you need to do is get fresh fish and cook it simply. To then charge rip-off prices because of his name is disgraceful. His reply was 'if people are prepared to pay my prices, that's what I'll charge'. Please vote with your feet!
I live in West Cornwall. When Stein opened his restaurant in Porthleven he had flyers delivered to all the homes in the wider area offering special off-season prices for local residents. One lunchtime special offer for us low-paid locals was ‘A mackerel, simply grilled’. Any fishing harbour in Cornwall has fresh mackerel available on the quayside for less than 50p each. How much was Stein asking locals for ‘A mackerel, simply grilled’ at his special ‘Off-season’ prices ? £25. For a 50p mackerel that we could ‘Simply grill’ at home. We stayed away in droves of course, and now Stein has sold off the restaurant . Good riddance to a deeply unpopular character.
We were in Porthleven last week. We chanced by a small cafe opposite the Annes Pasty Shop on the stormy Monday as shelter from the rain with our two soaking dogs and I had the most amazing bowl of soup in there. Home made & delicious. It was packed all the time we sat in there so its clearly well known for good food. Its the little places that seem to excel these days.
Rick has always been a business man first and a feeder of the rich and middle class second. Long live the chippies across the UK that serve the people (including those of us who can’t afford Rick’s prices).
He started off being a DJ then moved to cooking and to be fair to him he has made people in the UK look at fish dishes in the UK and also continental cooking. I guess it might have been better when he was in the kitchen, now others do it and he rakes in the money for retirement, fair enough, we all want to do that. I actually thought the fish and chips not too bad, though overpriced. The scampi and mushy peas shameful though ....
Mario's, West Heath, Congleton, east end of Cheshire. Miles from the sea, but matches or even beats what I've ever had in Whitby or Cornwall. A big shout-out for the independents who do it properly
I thought it was always said that Rick was a very very tough businessman? Maybe more than chef? Maybe it's the tough investors wanting the margins up? But I've been a couple of times and I'd say good food, and flavours, excellent service - but it is what it is, and he's famous - so - it's expensive.
You are NOT being harsh. His place is appalling value for money, absolute shite if truth be told. Rick Stein is a disgrace if he doesn't buck up his ideas. Thank you for being so honest. I wish I had complained when I took my family there and spent £120 on mediocrity. ARRRHHHGH
So disappointed to see this. It was always my dream to eat at Rick Stein’s Restaurant. Guess I’ll put a cross through that one! We’ve got lots of great fish restaurants & beach concessions in Ireland that would beat this hands down. Come and check them out 😊
Gary, my friend. Iv never seen you like this in any of the videos, but it actually makes me really appreciate your reviews! We know were getting honesty and you dlnt care who owns/runs the restaurant. You just want us the audience to get the truth and i love that!
I live in Cornwall and the entire place has become a terrible, overpriced tourist trap. It's cheaper to spend a week in Spain than two days in Cornwall
Gary, I was planning on taking my 3 Kids there in July. I want to thank you for saving me a fortune. Rick Stein should bow his head in shame at that atrocious garbage. Yes its cost you 30 quid, but you have saved your viewers money. Thankyou
Can you imagine how disappointing and sad it would've been if you hadn't seen this, you only wanted a nice meal with your family and this is what you got. Very grateful for garry so we can avoid this mishap.
Anyone who pays this much for fish and chips from ANYWHERE regardless of who's name is above the door, is completely insane! £31 is a complete rip off, no matter what the quality is 🤷🏻♀️
Wasn't just for fish and chips, he had scampi, peas and tartare sauce. Fish and chips were about 14 pounds which is average price anywhere! Lets hope he takes note of all the adverse comments! From the internet - The most expensive fish and chips in the UK: From Tom Kerridge's £37 Harrods meal, a £27.50 plate at Bentley's in Mayfair, and Gordon Ramsay's £23 dish..the priciest offerings of the British classic, so as a celebrity restaurant he's pretty cheap ! 😄
Particularly as it was essentially a take away, with cardboard boxes and a wooden fork. Then you have to find somewhere to sit amongst the seagull droppings and lousy cold weather.
I worked for the Steins company for a number of years. I won't go into details about things here but I will say Gary, you were a lot closer to the truth with some of your thoughts about the source of the food than you realise. There is a another chip shop in Padstow called Chip Ahoy and you will find most of the Steins staff getting there fish and chips there. People don't believe me when I tell them some of the things about Steins so I'm glad you have done this video with a completely unbiased approach. I Get you wish you had gone back to Nice Baps again!!
Not been to Padstein for about 13 years now but when we used to go regularly, we always had fish and chips from Chip Ahoy. Streets ahead of Stein and much cheaper. Glad to hear it's still going
The owner of chip ahoy loved us. We'd park the Steins van outside his shop, and then go in for our lunch all wearing Steins branded tops. He would make a point of shouting across the shop really loudly when the order for Steins was ready.
Hilarious, it's like Sainsbury's and Tesco shopping at Aldi's because even with discount food is more expensive. Aldi's usually have much fresher fruit and vedg too because unlike most other supermarkets it moves very quickly.
Whilst complaining to the restaurant is difficult, in a circumstance of this nature it is a necessary action. The visual aspect of this meal was appalling, and Gary is a very reasonable bloke. Definitely one to avoid like the plague.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I think his offering is really hit an miss, I love the man himself and he has some decent restaurants, his fish and chip shops are just trash unfortunately. The theme I have is don't trust celebs fish and chip shops. Expensive always, great....not often
Just discovered Gary Eats. Apart from my stomach growling at me continuously, I'm loving it. He really makes me chuckle and I value, respect and trust his opinion already. Thank you, Gary.
@@richardmccann1366 No the elderly person menu who are blind. I watch a video from tower fisheries in Blackpool £8 the food looked amazing and came with the mushy peas and sauce . paying that much when there buying the scampi from the same places as every were else that charge around £8 just using the name to scam people
The price is what 90% of chippys in Cornwall are charging, I live in truro Cornwall and if myself and my wife order 2x cod chips curry sauce, and a piece of cod for the dog we pay £37
Extremely disappointing. He put his name on it, and he's serving frozen scampi, and serves a pitiful portion of fish and worthless mushy peas. It's a ripoff and an insult to fish and chips.
An insult to the nation! We're an island surrounded by sea and fish, he is supposedly a top chef, Fish and Chips is a national dish, how hard can it be?
Maybe he doesn't care, as more concerned about his new life in Australia with his 2nd wife who he ran off from his first wife that helped set up the businesses.
Well said, Gary. I went there with my girlfriend. It was the most expensive and worst fish and chips we'd ever eaten. We will never go back. Considering Rick Stein is a seafood guy, I was so surprised at how bad it was. You were generous, I'd give that place 0/10
I live in Cornwall and would say that it's the most expensive place in the country for fish and chips. Steins charges are not so much higher than any other place. We can't afford fish in Cornwall.
When I lived in West Cornwall, I wanted to take my new husband there for a treat. I tried to book by phone, but was told they only had a table at 10.30pm in the foreseeable future. Disappointed, nevertheless, I booked and drove across Cornwall (I was living in Falmouth). When we arrived, we had to wait 20 minutes as "the table wasn't available yet". When we sat down, we were quickly told not to take more than an hour (rich, I thought). We ordered drinks and food. I have to say, the menu was fairly disappointing - as was the food. We left in just over the hour (with an annoyed look from our waitress). The bill arrived, over 175!! We got into the car and drove home. I'm pleased to hear that the restaurant has closed!
Hi, just found you as we visited padstow this week and walked by there but not with the intention of eating as we took one look at the prices at kept walking. Great review , so glad we kept going. The beauty of UA-cam is you can always find someone who's done what you were thinking of doing yourself!
Rick Stein doesn't give a rat's arse about the normal working person, mate, and he doesn't give a toss about Cornwall, one of the most impoverished areas in the UK. He's just capitalising off londoners going to Cornwall for their jollies who don't know what a decent portion of fish and chips is, or what a fair price is, and he's cynically driving all the local chip shops out of business (as well as all the bnbs and driving the costs of rent up by encouraging airbnb-staying tourists) in the process. He's not a pleasant man, he's a business tycoon. I mean, the very IDEA of "luxury" fish and chips is a massive red flag. It's supposed to be cheap, cheerful, tasty, and filling and filling enough for a family, sometimes with leftovers for chip butties the next day. £30 quid for some fried potatoes, frozen scampi and a whiff of cod is insulting. Oh, and the lack of curry sauce.... I'd have walked out at that point. That's a deal-breaker, for me.
Putting a green garnish on the fish or scampi does not improve quality of food nor should it justify the prices. These celebrity chefs should be held to account for the substandard food and rip of prices.
Yeah we've all had cheap pub grub where they put some inedible curled parsley on it as if it spruces it up. This is unforgivable from a world renowned chef though.
@@GaryEats Try Australia! Oh my gawd............. We have one's here for AU$125+ for that lot in front of you however all the seafood is actually fresh on the day.
If I buy scampi, I fully expect tartare sauce to come with. I've never known anyone to charge extra for condiments. If burger vans can afford to let you serve yourself as much ketchup, mustard or mayo from the pump bottles as you like, why should one pay nearly 2 quid for a tablespoon of tartare sauce. I wouldn't mind if Rick Stein was affecting as a Michelin starred chef but his travel series were always about hearty, simple, affordable food with local ingredients. Fish in Cornwall ought to be as abundant as any food comes. It's just hoiked out of the water there and then. I was in the international tourism capital of Bath (miles from the sea) last weekend and got a massive haddock and chips (OK, not brilliant) for £16.
Great review Gary, thanks for taking the bullets. We went to Rick Stein Jetty ten years ago it was fabulous but everything since has rocked up in price. we never tried his fish n chips. We cycled into Padstow earlier this week, and place was packed. Can’t believe how much Stein now owns shops in Padstow. I got the ladies to price one onion in the stein deli, 84p, we went to Coop got one onion for 24p. We saw the chips and cod prices…expensive cod! We did go down to one of the best cornwall fishing village for fish n chips called The Three Pilchards. Very friendly people and good priced fish n chips.
Rick Stein was filming for his TV series on Cornwall a few years ago here in Newlyn and he and the film crew had a break and went to a local pub. They sat in the beer garden with their drinks and proceeded to take out their packed lunches and eat them then and there. One of the staff asked if they could eat it elsewhere and Stein commented that they had bought the drinks in the pub and so they were entitled to stay to drink them and also eat their own food!!! Some locals sitting nearby heard this and told him they also thought he should leave, but he didn't. Arrogant.
I was at a food exhibition a few years back, and Rick Stein was there. I have NEVER EVER known a man more arrogant and full of himself. He really believed his own legend. A customer tried a sample of his food and said it was bland, and undercooked. Rick Stein made a show of that person, saying sarcastic shite like "wow a food expert! I thought that was me"..... he's an absolute gobshite
That’s not cod. Doesn’t fall apart properly. Also, minimum landing size of a cod is ~15 inches (35cm) That’s a 1/4 of something. Whole tail scampi is langoustine. Remove the batter any red on the flesh? That’s passing off. Illegal in the uk
Great honest review. Took my family to his restaurant in Sandbanks last summer for a treat. Fish and chips £20 per head, there were 9 chips and a tiny piece of fish, left feeling robbed and heartbroken as i was a HUGE Rick Stein fan.
Don't you look before you buy? I usually inspect other tables before committing. That doesn't help with the flavour but at least amount and cooking quality. Not shy of asking other eater's opinions. Speaking of which I don't get British fish and chips. It's fatty, miserable and I had trouble getting it hot. When I asked the lady one establishment if I might have it hot she went all passive aggressive on me.
I followed the career of Rick Stein from his early days as celebrity chef. At the time, I was a chef myself and living in Australia (like him) and I could not really understand what the fuss was all about. His recipes were always pinched from somebody else and they all had something in common: they were easy to cook. His kitchen demeanour on his TV series showed clearly that he was not a trained chef. He was a hack who stumbled into a good thing and who was very lucky to have a wife (a publicist) who knew how he should be promoted. He would have never succeeded in any other area of cooking except seafood, which usually tastes great no matter what you do to it (within reason as we saw in this video). Unlike all the other trained British chefs like Floydf, Ramsay, Blumenthal, Oliver and Lawson, Stein stood apart as not belonging to the illustrious list. Gary, you have visited the restaurants of several British TV personalities and none of them have allowed their name to be tarnished by a shonky operation. Rick Stein is the only one and the best thing people can do is vote with their feet and go elsewhere. Even as a tourist trap, his fish and chips shop was below par. If I were you, I would send his shop a link to your video and ask for comments. You could then make a follow-up video.
I think it’s because Stein has impeccable upper middle class credentials. Public school, Oxford etc. He’s the kinda guy BBC producers would be inclined to commission.
He wasn't a chef. He kept his fish meals very basic (but tasty) in his early days of being in the kitchen at the Seafood Restaurant. He was a DJ before that.
Stein's stance on his staff's furlough payments during the height of the pandemic tells you all you need to know. Haven't watched his TV shows since. Wouldn't dream of visiting his restaurants now.
Another very fair and honest review. Having watched 4 of your videos today, Taco Bell, Tom Kerridge ((£37 fish and chips), Mathew's £3 fish and chips and now this I think these big corporates and celebrity shops are so heavily driven by profit that they lose sight of the actual product. The £3 fish and chips were all about feeding the community and offering a good product at an affordable, fair price. They are made with pride and a feeling of helping their local community. The two chefs should be delivering a product that kicks the £3 offering to the kerb. They both failed and I think people should look to supporting the people trying to make an honest living and especially those who are giving back to their communities. A shame in Rick as i too really admire his skill and TV shows.
I happens to really like Rick on television, but I do not like his fish and chips, too many celebrity restaurants are letdown compared to the privately owned ones
Good for you for being so honest and not bowing down to any pressure to upset a celebrity chef . The one good thing about the whole episode is I’m sure you’ll get record amount of views and I’ve already seen this video going around twitter! Sadly as you rightly said, gone are the day when fish n chips used to be a cheap meal and unfortunately there are too many overpriced , mediocre shops around
I went as I wanted a good meal Jon but unfortunately that didn’t happen and apparently to loads of viewers so I’m pleased it out in the world now as hopefully his management team will improve and make changes so it’s no longer a tourist trap 👍
Gary I’ve been going to Padstow every year for 20 years. I love it. However we never go to Rick Stein’s restaurants which is a shame as I do enjoy his shows. There are plenty of other fantastic restaurants in Padstow such as burgers and fish, or rojanos on the square, and by the way the best fish and chips are at Chip Ahoy just down the road from Rick’s bistro! Great value and big fish. I’m a new viewer after I found your channel today and was amazed you went to Padstow , it feels like a second home to me. Glad you feel the same way about Padstein’s chip shop
I’m pleased you enjoy visiting Padstow. I thought it looked fantastic and a wonderful place to visit. What wasn’t wonderful? Was obviously Rick fish and chips, if I return in the future, I will look at your recommendations. Thank you very much for commenting and subscribing.
You’re a top fellow Gary I’ve watched about 3 hours of your videos today. Padstow is a wonderful place to visit and across the estuary via passenger ferry is the small village called Rock. Did you know the beer by St Austel brewery called Doom Bar was originally brewed there, and it’s called Doom Bar because in the mouth of that estuary which separates Padstow and Rock is a large sand bar/bank which many a fishing vessel operating out of Padstow grounded on and quite a few sank… that sand bar earned its name the Doom Bar because of its reputation amongst the local fishermen who knew to avoid it. Some boring trivia for you as a gesture of my gratitude for keeping me entertained with your videos
My husband was disappointed that you didn’t ask for a refund; I’d be interested to know why you decided not to complain about such a shocking meal. Also have to applaud you for your comments, people work very hard for a treat and don’t deserve to be ripped off like this.
I've been eating and drinking in my local for 10 years. I'm always complaining about the food if it's bad and so I should. But as a restaurant for a one off I'd not complain, I'd just not go there anymore.
I'm way over here in Seattle, from here it doesn't look so good, but the city is beautiful.! The fish looks like it's been sitting under a heat lamp.Dont scampi have tails🤣🤣,the peas,a fail,I would complain if I were you, much love from across the pond,oh,btw, who's Rick Stein?
@@stjohnbaby Rick Stein is a celeb chef with ties to Padstow who evidently (based on Gary’s vid here) likes to trade on his name to rip off hard working simple families when they visit his branded eateries. Arise, Sir Rick of Stein. You are awarded the knighthood for Services to Ripping Ordinary Folk Off, to Line your own Pockets.
A good friend of mine, here in Australia who is English like me, also mentioned Padstow is actually Padstein several years ago. He had actually been to Padstow unlike me. I don't know the place from Adam.
I’ve eaten at his sea food restaurant and bistro many times and they have been excellent. I’d say the sea fid restaurant is perhaps the best and most consistent if any of the celebrity chef restaurants out there. I don’t think it’s fair to bash Rick stein, he’s done a lot for British food producers and encouraged many chefs. I’m not at excusing the fish and chips tasted here. But don’t comment if you haven’t been. Jamie Oliver’s ‘15’ in Watergate Bay was excellent too. I can’t stand Gordon Ramsay as a human being but his restaurants are excellent.
@@adamyeo8590 as a former resident of Cornwall, I've eaten at Steins Padstow and Falmouth fish restaurants. To say it was excellent would be false. Yet a short walk down the road in Falmouth, there is a fish and chip takeaway that knocks Rick Steins place into a cooked hat and, at a lower price with larger fish and a bigger portion of chips. These celebrity chefs trade on their so called famous names. I wonder how many customers return a second time.
I drive the buses that terminate at the back of his place. Tourists always seem to go there and return unhappy. Ask yourself, why don't the locals go there?
I was born down the road in St Eval, and had the joy of living in Treyarnon and going to school in St Merryn, There was a perfectly good chippy on the corner in Padders and we loved the Hoss. That twat has ruined the area with his gentrifying bollox, I would love to bump into him him and give him a Scots handshake
When I was in Padstow 10 years ago, we was going into try but the look and price of the food was very disappointing. We didn't go there and ended up in the Pub in the end. Better fish and chips in Wales.
As a former resident of Cornwall, these businesses rub their hands together when the summer season comes around because they charge charge the earth to visitors.
It’s the same up here during the tourist season, I worked in a roadside restaurant in my mid twenties (had a student loan and various other debts to pay for the pleasure of becoming ‘educated.” And it turned over 1 million a week from the restaurant and snack bar they had, the also sold hiking/walking clothes, boots that’s etc in one shop on the premises and a specialist whisky and other beverage shop on the premises as well, they must have been turning over nearly 2 million per week, on an average week in summer. It was always unbelievably busy, I know for a fact my employers were absolutely rubbing their hands together!
@@CB-xr1eg If you must know? I have a masters degree in electronic engineering and a masters degree in applied physics, I’m guessing you aren’t educated at all…
Herbies at Lyme Regis does great fish and chips. It’s always described by the type of fish and it’s rarely cod which is good as it’s caught locally. You get 2 pieces of fish if it’s smaller. Lyme fish bar next door is good too
You’re absolutely correct, Gary. I went to Stein’s restaurant in Padstow a few years ago, and it was staggeringly underwhelming. Food that tasted like it came straight out of the freezer, extortionate prices, surly and disinterested staff. I have no idea how he got so famous or so rich. He should be embarrassed. Cheers, mate!
I find you fascinating, really calm and concise in your reviews. No exaggeration in your videos. Just lovely watching your videos. I like genuine people like you.
Yep it is the only fish and chip shop they have in Cornwall isn't it? There are no other fish and chip shops whatsoever elsewhere who maybe cater for locals. They probably only have pasty shops catering for the yokels in your mind I believe?
We've been to RS fish n chip restaurant in Padstow twice...the first time we were the only ones there and our food was amazing so we went back again a year later.....A completely different story second time round! The fish could have been from any old chippy, and the waitress asked if we wanted ketchup and tarter sauce to which we said 'yes'. We then discovered we'd been charge £2 each for the tiny pots of ketchup and tarter, and the food was a huge disappointment, reheated chips and more batter than fish.....we won't be going back again....TOTAL RIP OFF!
Pretty much the experience I outlined first handful of times was fantastic. Had some John Dory once and was absolutely incredible. We probably had a break from Padstow of about 18 months and went back not long before Covid…went twice in a 2 week period and awful both times. Think he dodged a bullet with the curry sauce as that was the strangest thing I’d ever tasted. The tartare sauce used to be lovely and obviously freshly homemade but last couple of times was just funky and awful. He probably has his finger in too many pies to notice or even care.
I have never seen you so annoyed, and I don't blame you - those mushy peas looked disgusting 😕 . The prices they charged you for that offering is daylight robbery.
I worked in Cornwall 6 years ago... I worked in Coverack... Was frying fish over a 4 month period... We were exceptionally busy due to demand and also we were the only chippy there... BUT... Although our fish was Norwegian Based in bulk... The other fish was fresh from The English Channel... Mackerel and Seabass... We served Cod and we charged £7-50p for fish and chips Take Away... 🐟 🍟...
As a former restaurant owner everything seemed to be frozen and prepackaged The only thing the restaurant did was fry, heat and serve Disgraceful You should have returned it and demanded a refund
I was in Rick steins restaurant in Padstow a few years back and had steak and chips thinking it would be good, however steak was tiny and came with 8 chips! I kid you not, never again !!!!!!!!!!
I have eaten at that place in the summer. Very expensive like £125 for 4 fish and chips with coke. Worst part was no mushy peas as they had ran out. How can you run out when you only sell 3 things fish chips peas?. Incompetent management i suppose. They also bragged on the posters that they use real patatoes WTF all actual chip shops use real potatoes its nothing new. Anyway i would recomend the bubbly battered fish from Aldi and a tin of their mushy peas. Yes i know you have to cook it yourself but its over £100 cheaper and just as tasty. And their skin on fries are nice too.
The surroundings gives a clue. The building looks like a warehouse and the area resembles an industrial park! Shame, Rick does come across as a really nice, genuine guy. Has fame gone to his head? Thanks once again Gary for your eye-opening, honest review. One to be avoided.
The area is right next to the fish market. Whilst it probably looks a weird location it’s actually ok…just a 2 minute stroll from the town. Have eaten inside a couple of times and it’s quite nice inside other than being absolutely crammed and so noisy as it’s so popular.
Genuine my arse, he comes across as a patronising toss pot to me and always has done. That fake Cornish accent he has developed is beyond parody. He is nothing more than a public school con man and a dilettante to boot.
I'm not a fan of celebrity chefs - trading on a name, and often not caring about quality or value. The only one who stood out for me was Keith Floyd, who stomped about his restaurant in wooden clogs, tasted everything, and slurped his way through a busy day making sure his customers were happy. I saw him look at a plate of food being served, and send it back - then went into the kitchen and personally cooked its replacement. Rick Stein can't have ever eaten that crap he serves, or if he did, he's a mercenary, not a celebrity.
You would think that these Celeb chefs would care deeply about what their name gets put to.... in the real world some of them really don't give a monkeys. Meanwhile Clarkson (of all people - as I can't stand him) at least really makes the effort as he understands the value of good PR.
@@shadowside8433 Greeno's review of Clarkson's pub gives it a bit of a roasting, and I think he's right, but at least in Clarkson's case, things are being done for the right reasons, and it'll undoubtedly come good over the next weeks/months.
@@AndyO-f7k I was thinking about the farm review (and even then they didn't have any hot food) - but at least the product seems to be ok, albeit expectedly expensive.
GOLDEN RULE OF BUSINESS - "If the mugs are willing to buy it - then keep selling it". NB - We are the consumers and have enormous economic clout, but, true to the British mentality we still buy it then walk away 'Tutting and complaining'. On the Continent the consumer get together and refuse en mass to shop at a supermarket or buy a product if they're being exploited. Like i stated earlier - "We are the consumers and have enormous economoc clout". PS - Who is this 'NUTTA' who thinks that a man he's NEVER met is a 'Good Friend' - where is his straight jacket??.
Rick Stein's restaurant here in NSW Australia is called Bannisters Hotel and they charge A$47 (24.73 Pound sterling) for fish and chips which would normally cost about A$10-$12 in a the local fish & chip shop. Looks like they are all about the money.
You would think that fish and chips at the seaside would be the best and the freshest ! to serve frozen food at that price is terrible. The batter looks too thick and hardly any fish..
My local chippy in Clayhanger up here in the Midlands is brilliant.Lovely big portions, always hot and tasty and affordable prices and if you're pushed for getting here there's a delivery service for the local area. Mr Stein ain't never going to get richer by me spending my money in his establishment down in Padstow. Give it a miss holiday makers. Excellent review from ' Gary Eats'.
Wow, I don't know what got a worse battering - the cod or Rick Stein's reputation after your review! TBH I think your score of 1 was being a tad generous, what a rip off.
Never seen you like that Gary. You were really very upset. Well done for what you said to Rick Stein at the end of the video. He needs to know people won't stand to be ripped off like that ! Thanks for the review.
Thank you for the heads up Gary, ive often thought about going to Ricks restaurant. I wont worry now. The most expensive food in my opinion is something that (whatever the price) is a turn off from the start and inedible. Personally i wish you had of gone in and complained, too many establishments are serving sub standard food and should be made aware its not on. As gentrification sweeps across the coasts and towns this has happened to me numerous times. Its 10pm and having just watched the Billingsgate review im so so tempted to jump on a train(wont be cheap) and go and get some Proper food. Oh and definitely get some scallops. Great channel, All the best.
@@GaryEats Indeed, I wish it wasn't so. But when they deliver inedible food like that at prices like that, they will only drive customers away. They need to deliver what is being paid for, up their game. Thanks for a great video and the money saving 'heads up'.
Steins tried to charge us over 90 pounds for four people . We told them to stick the fish and chips and walked away. We have a local cafe in a marina near mine that charges nine pounds for a sausage roll and a cup of tea.
Personally I say back to basics a well cooked fish in well drained batter with some chips well drained then dried peas soaked well then cooked soft serve in paper to allow the steam to escape and stop doing these twists and improved versions just go back to the original basic version or forget it don't give me more just one portion properly cooked no extras
14:17 I'm not surprised, I was taken there for dinner because I had said I loved fish and chips, this was in the eighties soon after he opened there and my pal a publican was known to him. The portions were so small that we came out of there and stopped at a mobile chippie on the quayside and bought chips.I have never forgotten ,so nothing has changed.
We were in Cornwall as a family of 6 around 10 years ago, and even then the Rick Stein prices were sky high, so we never ate in any of his many establishments. On mentioning this to many of our friends over the years, it transpires that they all had a similar experience to you - tiny portions, poor quality, and ridiculously high prices. It’s weird, because you see him on TV enthusing about local cuisine from all over the world. You’d assume that he’d be about value and quality, but it appears not.
100% agree. I was conned at his Falmouth (now closed) restaurant. Small piece of grey colour fish with small portion of vastly over-cooked chips at double the price of most High St. fisheries. I complained to R.S. website but got no reply. Why does Rick not take a pride in and check these places with his name over the door ?
So £60 give or take for takeaway fish and chips, for two, that is nowhere near central London. Why do these beloved tv chefs ruin their reputations for money they probably don't really need?
I wouldn’t consider a portion of cod, scampi, chips and three sauces to be a for a single person unless you are greedy or reviewing like Gary. The realistic price here would be near £40 for two people, which is still spendy all things considered, but also not extortionate, especially if the quality is there, which it clearly wasn’t.
This is the problem with celebrity chefs: they start living off their celebrity, not their food. Some of the worst chain restaurants I’ve been to have been Jamie Oliver’s.
Gary has discovered what is common knowledge to most people in the South West, Rick Stein’s establishments are a highly priced for small, mediocre tasting portions…..there are far better chippies in Padstow, such as Chip Ahoy, far cheaper, much bigger portion sizes and excellent taste.
Gary, my wife and I love watching your videos and live in Torquay. We would recommend Bistrot Pierre’s on Torquay seafront. We go there regularly and think it’s wonderful food and service. Would love you to give your view on what we consider the best place to eat in Torbay. They do an amazing breakfast but also some great lunchtime dishes. Also has amazing views over Tor Bay which would be great for background. Carry on the fantastic work we think you’re the best reviewer around! Best wishes Dave and Sharon
I actually think he is a very good cook but that's a moot point, this food has nothing to do with him, his son runs the business and they are simply making shoddy fish and chips with his name on it. He needs to sort it out and tell his son and the staff to get their acts together. I've now seen a few reviews of this rubbish - nobody likes it or thinks it's acceptable. Frankly you'd be better off buying frozen Youngs or Birds Eye and cooking it in your oven than wasting your money - it would be healthier too, without all that grease.
Used to be based down at the Naval Air Station in Culdrose. We used to call him 'Rip-off Rick'. Typical of the London Arseholes that migrated down to second homes in the West Country. None of the locals like any of them. Devon's the same.
What a disgrace. Flew into England a couple of days ago. Picked up a small fish and small chips at Sheddy’s in Spalding. Fish the same size as Stein’s and much more chips. Total £8.00.
@@AffectedArea sorry I was wrong. He DOES fry in beef dripping. I was mistaken. It’s been years since I went there as I moved away and forgot. Sorry for sharing fake news & I’m happy to correct the record. I will definitely go to sheddy’s next time I’m in Spalding
Wow I've never seen Gary so angry and I don't think I've ever heard him say something was disgusting so it really must be bad. I think you can put Rick Stein and Tom Kerridge in Room 101! This is what happens when there are too many franchises, quality suffers. Same with Jamie Oliver so I believe. Don't apologise for being annoyed Gary, you're entitled to be if you feel ripped off. It just goes to show you're right about family run places being superior. Their bread and butter is based on their reputation. Hopefully the next review will be better.
This place is a disgrace to Cornwall! Anyone local would tell you to go to another chippy for a fraction of the price and a whole lot better. Please don’t get ripped off with this phoney rubbish.
Welcome to Cornwall, Gary, rip-off capital of the U.K. I agree with you that Rick Stein comes across well in his TV programmes, but in real life... As a bookseller down here for decades, I've come across Stein several times (he's always had books to flog) and I can tell you he's not popular amongst my kin. Hughie Green used to say ''if you can fake sincerity...'
I hate the way Stein patronises foreigners. He finds some guy In India who earns hardly any money making the same roti all day, who probably hates his job. Stein then tells you this guy is happy. They never look happy. Stein then flies back to his big house in Britain.
But it was not just fish and chips for 31 quid , Gary added a portion of Scampi at about 10 quid extra. The fish came to about 11 quid and the chips were about 4 quid, still, too much, and Gary showed how poor the portion of fish was in size and taste. So yes I still believe the meal was a bit too pricey but just to put things straight, it was not 31 quid for Fish and chips!
I went to Padstow in the 80's and it was a thriving fishing village. I went a few years ago, and it had completely lost it's atmosphere, on account of the Rick Stein takeover. I did eat in that" excuse for a restaurant" with a party of 8. It was sickeningly expensive and very low quality. We felt we were taken advantage of. I have completely lost my respect for Rick Stein, and see him as some kind of mafia tycoon. I never watch his TV programs anymore, because I see it as fake.
Last year we went to Stein's top restaurant in Padstow and what a disappointment it was. Very average food costing nearly £200 for two people and we didn't have an expensive wine. My wife's meal was a disaster. It looked a mess and was bland and boring. Never again. Should have gone to Paul Ainsworth's excellent restaurant.
I think ALL of us should really think about how we support these celebrity chefs and realise how good a living they are having off of our money. It's time to totally ignore them and support good HONEST local businesses only.
A very good point Barry however in a couple of videos time I actually have a great experience 👌
If its Rock and the Mariners I've visited and totally enjoyed it! Thanks Gary , we love your great reviews.
Well said.
That looked rank and I'd eat anything

Sticking to the point
and not being repetitive
I once emailed Rick Stein to say he was giving Cornwall a really bad name by saying on TV that all you need to do is get fresh fish and cook it simply. To then charge rip-off prices because of his name is disgraceful. His reply was 'if people are prepared to pay my prices, that's what I'll charge'. Please vote with your feet!
Wow really? I never heard back
serving from a pack of frozen scampi and charging £10 for it is actually borderline criminal
Unfortunately he’s absolutely correct! Just don’t pay for over rated food.
Greedy man rick stein , avoid it simple
i mean - his forename is literaly "Stein" - what else did you expect ? :)
What the hell...
You are right but forgot to mention the fire 🔥.... after he refused to buy locally caught fish from Porthlevan fishermen.
Well done, at his age why is he so GREEDY.
If this was an ice cream shop it would be called ROBIN BASKINS
Rick has always been a business man first and a feeder of the rich and middle class second. Long live the chippies across the UK that serve the people (including those of us who can’t afford Rick’s prices).
I agree support the independent fish and chip shops
He started off being a DJ then moved to cooking and to be fair to him he has made people in the UK look at fish dishes in the UK and also continental cooking.
I guess it might have been better when he was in the kitchen, now others do it and he rakes in the money for retirement, fair enough, we all want to do that.
I actually thought the fish and chips not too bad, though overpriced.
The scampi and mushy peas shameful though ....
Out of touch rich business owners

It was shocking
@@GaryEats I agree 👍🏻
Wasn't just for fish and chips, he had scampi, peas and tartare sauce. Fish and chips were about 14 pounds which is average price anywhere!
Lets hope he takes note of all the adverse comments! From the internet - The most expensive fish and chips in the UK: From Tom Kerridge's £37 Harrods meal, a £27.50 plate at Bentley's in Mayfair, and Gordon Ramsay's £23 dish..the priciest offerings of the British classic, so as a celebrity restaurant he's pretty cheap ! 😄
@@patrickellaby still way to expensive, wasn't even freshly caught fish either 🤷🏻♀️
That’s absolutely terrible to hear Andy that’s just unacceptable but not surprising
I totally agree with you why didn't you complain?
Everyone says Steins is a rip off. He doesn’t care as long as the cash rolls in.
I really liked his restaurant Greg but this was shocking
Whilst complaining to the restaurant is difficult, in a circumstance of this nature it is a necessary action. The visual aspect of this meal was appalling, and Gary is a very reasonable bloke. Definitely one to avoid like the plague.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I think his offering is really hit an miss, I love the man himself and he has some decent restaurants, his fish and chip shops are just trash unfortunately. The theme I have is don't trust celebs fish and chip shops. Expensive always, great....not often
Pretty sure his restaurant group lost millions last year 😮

The price is what 90% of chippys in Cornwall are charging, I live in truro Cornwall and if myself and my wife order 2x cod chips curry sauce, and a piece of cod for the dog we pay £37
Extremely disappointing. He put his name on it, and he's serving frozen scampi, and serves a pitiful portion of fish and worthless mushy peas. It's a ripoff and an insult to fish and chips.
An insult to the nation! We're an island surrounded by sea and fish, he is supposedly a top chef, Fish and Chips is a national dish, how hard can it be?

This was really really poor
Take him were? The fish and chips shop or the Sea food restaurant!
Bigger fool you. Hopefully lesson learned
Hi, just found you as we visited padstow this week and walked by there but not with the intention of eating as we took one look at the prices at kept walking. Great review , so glad we kept going. The beauty of UA-cam is you can always find someone who's done what you were thinking of doing yourself!
You definitely dodged a bullet and you can always generally find a review on a local restaurant
Unfortunately, Peter, I have to agree with you completely. This was unacceptable.
I agree, and I like your name !
Overly pretentious
I've been to a few of Gordon Ramsay diners over the years, all were excellent, 5 * 🤷
@@GaryEats Try Australia! Oh my gawd............. We have one's here for AU$125+ for that lot in front of you however all the seafood is actually fresh on the day.

I can remember when one pound would by 24 portions of fish and chips ! Fish were 6d and chips were 4d.
Value was fine according to some 🤣
At least Dick Turpin wore a mask! 😂😂😂
@@roberthindle5146 The first place I was asked to pay for condiments was at a chippy in Matlock. I declined and never went to that chippy again.
Rick Stein’s place in Padstow is renowned for being a complete and utter rip-off. Nothing new here Gary I’m afraid. 😢

Thank you very much for your wonderful comment. I think it’s far better to support a local chippy than this tourist trap.

That’s not good to hear Angus
Great idea 👍
Lawson a trained Chef??🤣
I think it’s because Stein has impeccable upper middle class credentials. Public school, Oxford etc. He’s the kinda guy BBC producers would be inclined to commission.
I could not get back to the Yorkshire cost quick enough ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He wasn't a chef. He kept his fish meals very basic (but tasty) in his early days of being in the kitchen at the Seafood Restaurant. He was a DJ before that.
Stein's stance on his staff's furlough payments during the height of the pandemic tells you all you need to know. Haven't watched his TV shows since. Wouldn't dream of visiting his restaurants now.

Another very fair and honest review. Having watched 4 of your videos today, Taco Bell, Tom Kerridge ((£37 fish and chips), Mathew's £3 fish and chips and now this
I think these big corporates and celebrity shops are so heavily driven by profit that they lose sight of the actual product.
Rick Stein should be ashamed of having his name on that food.

A very good point Ian thank you
Because there's a cheaper chippy opposite Anne's cottage .
Harry Ramsden of Padstow 😅
I was born down the road in St Eval, and had the joy of living in Treyarnon and going to school in St Merryn, There was a perfectly good chippy on the corner in Padders and we loved the Hoss. Buses go there because the drivers get paid by them to do so. Its obvious
When I was in Padstow 10 years ago, we was going into try but the look and price of the food was very disappointing. We didn't go there and ended up in the Pub in the end.
Better fish and chips in Wales.

A tourist trap Terry for sure
It’s the same up here during the tourist season, I worked in a roadside restaurant in my mid twenties (had a student loan and various other debts to pay for the pleasure of becoming ‘educated.” And it turned over 1 million a week from the restaurant and snack bar they had, the also sold hiking/walking clothes, boots that’s etc in one shop on the premises and a specialist whisky and other beverage shop on the premises as well, they must have been turning over nearly 2 million per week, on an average week in summer. You’re absolutely correct, Gary. I went to Stein’s restaurant in Padstow a few years ago, and it was staggeringly underwhelming.

I agree and absolutely loved Keith RIP a real legend 👌👌
You would think that these Celeb chefs would care deeply about what their name gets put to.... in the real world some of them really don't give a monkeys. Meanwhile Clarkson (of all people - as I can't stand him) at least really makes the effort as he understands the value of good PR.
