That was Nadal's "joke" as Djokovic was at the time locked up like a common criminal when the Australian government flip-flopped on their own exemption process after telling Djokovic to come over. Nadal was delighted that djokovic was not there to Play and couldn't help himself. just like all the other dumb stuff Nadal has been saying the last while.. it all came out of Nadal's mouth all on its own so it's his responsibility. Rafa was happy on the court and his movements and reflexes are pretty encouraging. Last year he did say he needed to be quicker in both his feet and his shots to get the impacts he intended, if I recall correctly. Really hope he gets better asap in this compartment as he progresses. Rafa Nadal brings lot of delight and joy to fans and his presence is simply wonderful to many, the Fedal’s charm is no longer present. Nothing lasts forever we all know. Utmost best wishes to Rafa. purcell is a fairly accomplished doubles player with two major finals and a wimbledon title. he has played and won a title in doubles with thompson as recently as last season too. this was really just a way for nadal to get practice, playing alongside retired coach lopez just for fun. therefore this was the expected result, and nothing surprising. the australians obviously played a much better match.
it's great to see nadal back on court happy and presumably ready to compete for titles in singles. it's hard to say "be realistic" with him because he defies expectations so much, but he still shouldn't expected to win the australian open--nor does he need to. it would be amazing for him to play big events throughout the season and have a few deep runs on the slower courts, maybe even a clay title or two.
He needs to give his body extended breaks between tournaments this year. He should not do back to back tournaments at all, which would mean skipping a few big events, but I think it’s necessary to prevent injury

My New Year celebrations are complete, now that I've seen Rafa play again!!! Tough resumption to the Tour, and have to say he did put in quite an effort, though Purcell and Thompson had many more bases covered...... May Nadal have one of his best seasons to date in 2024
