  • A story about our latest micro-hydro power plant in Bali, Indonesia!
    The turbine supplies 13 kW of energy to the Green School, the world-famous sustainable school located next to the Ayung River in Bali. The turbine supplies up to 80% of the school's energy need. More than seven hundred students, teachers and staff can now benefit from clean and reliable energy from the river.

    So I guess you shrink the river near the turbine to the width of the raft with minimal depth so it can pass without stopping.

    I wish I had a river nearby so I could use this to power my house. Is it cheaper than a whole-home solar installation? I could probably do some of the installation work myself. I’m currently looking into geothermal. I wonder if you could drill down and install something like this to be powered by underground water flows, or is that too slow?

    I'm very keen in having one that produce 10-55Kw of energy. I live in Canada and taking to account our brutal winter is it visible in this part of the world?

    • @TurbulentHydro
      @TurbulentHydro  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Isaac, rivers can freeze over at the surface. However, a completely frozen river happens very rarely in most places. During this time there is no water flow, so also no energy. The same with a complete dry river. The turbine keeps working without problem until the flow is lower than 20% of its optimal design flow.
      We've seen lots of interest from Canada for our micro hydro solutions and we hope to be there very soon. Canada's hydro potential is frankly huge!
      Our customer John Hardy, co-founder of the Green School Bali is also a Canadian which is why when he saw the river nearby the school, he immediately saw power. However, it could not be harnessed with traditional hydro solutions.

    • @TurbulentHydro
      @TurbulentHydro  4 роки тому +2

      @@isaacabrahamson2204the first step would be to have an estimation of the height difference of the site you have in mind and the flow. We will also need pictures later on that shows clearly the drop on the river. With this information we can have a an initial pre-feasibility check of your project.

    • @thewheelieguy
      @thewheelieguy 2 роки тому

      The vertical drop gives the energy that turns the turbine. It's the same with all hydropower setups; you have a higher head of water and you discharge at a lower elevation.
      The available power is the flow rate of water multiplied by the vertical change.

      Hi I am from Nepal too, one turbine can produce 13-15 Kw per day, if 66 of these(15kw) are installed It can generate about 1 Mw . It means 1Mw can supply around 650 average houses. If it is rural house then even more houses can be lit up.

    1:53 This comparison doesn't really make sens: How many available spot do you have to install this vortex ? A really tiny amount in comparison to solar pv. No need to make such comparison, every energy source has its advantage.

    • @TurbulentHydro
      @TurbulentHydro  4 роки тому +3

      In fact, the potential is huge. We've identified 350,000 sites in Europe only with small height differences between 1,5 to 5 meters. Countries like Nepal could be fully powered with micro hydropower!
      In this particular case, a solar project of such dimensions to produce the same amount of energy as our turbine was simply not feasible for the Green School due to the space. However, both the vortex turbine and solar PV are working together, providing the Green School with about 80% and 20% correspondingly of green energy!

    The problem with solar and wind is that they have a negative environmental impact( taking up space and killing birds), need subsidies, and are very brittle. The last part is frequently over looked. In both Puerto Rico and Japan entire solar farms were wiped out by bad weather. In the Midwest of America thunderstorms and tornado alley destroy windmills.
    Hydro, gas and nuclear are still the top three.
