- A review of one of my favorite jackets, the Arc'teryx Gamma MX softshell. We look at its features, and some layering suggestions. Also, a look at its fleece backing. This piece is designed for mountain activities with it's durable fabric, and large helmet compatible hood. This video shows the non-hooded version.

Have the hooded version in Exosphere (what a color!) and it's my favorite softshell, hands down. Great video btw! There are not very much detailed vids about these Arc'teryx products out there.

I'm surprised how much I like watching these videos. I just bought this in the same color. I have the black one with a hood I just bought but want a hoodless one as well.
It's nice to have a hood on most pieces, but I do like having a few without a hood. Both shells and insulated pieces. It adds some versatility.

@@algorerhyth Great piece. I wear mine a lot. Just bought the Sawyer Hoody a few weeks ago. Very similar, just a smaller hood, and it has a gore-tex infinium face fabric, more of an urban style piece. The Gamma MX is designed more for mountain use. I'll be publishing a video soon comparing the two. But the Gamma MX is one of my most worn pieces in the winter over my Atom LT.

Hi, I don't have the older generation, so I honestly can't tell you the difference. I think that the older one had a pocket on the left arm sleeve, and different chest pockets, other than that, I'm not sure.

what temperature range would be ok in this jacket for casual use (low output) wearing only a t-shirt? Down to 50f or 60f?
It's a great softshell, but it really does not provide any warmth on it's own. Even though it has a fleece backing, I think that a fleece like the delta or kyanite may be a bit warmer, as they will fit closer to the body. This gamma really needs something under it to aid warmth. Just my opinion. Honestly I have not really worn it by itself in cooler to cold weather, since when I first got it and tried it like that I found that it was not that warm. So I always use it on top of an atom or proton.

Hi! I am 5’10” with a weight of 205 lbs. For the Gamma MX jacket and pants, should I go for Large or XL? Thank you in advance.
I would say to go with whatever size that you would normally wear with anything else. The Gamma MX jacket is a regular fit, and has a little extra room to layer under it, but it's not that big where you may need to size down. Get your normal size.
The pants fit true to size as well, so match up your regular size, and it should fit fine..

How does it fit with Atom AR? If it's too bully like thorium, will it fit over MX?
Hi, I just tried the Gamma MX over the Atom AR. For me, it fits great, no problem. it's actually a really nice combo. The Thorium AR does fit under the Gamma MX as well, but it's a little snug. A little too much for me. That's not really what I would want to wear under the Gamma MX. The gamma MX does fit under either piece as well. No problem there. The Atom AR is not as bulky as the Thorium, so the fit under the Gamma MX is really nice.

Yes, absolutely. But here's an issue that you may encounter. For me, my Gamma MX is the Jacket, without the hood. So to put it under the Atom AR.... no problem. But I know that the hoods on the Gamma LT and MX are large because they are meant to fit over a helmet. The Hood on the Gamma is going to be larger than the hood on the Atom. It may be a bit awkward to layer them with the Gamma hood under the Atom hood. I'm just guessing here. To me, typically since the gamma is a shell, and the Atom is an insulated layer, the gamma is intended to fit over the Atom. You can wear it however you like, but because of their intended use, you may have a little issue with the hood. I actually just bought the Sawyer hoody over the weekend.... Black Friday sale. I'll be doing a review comparing it to the Gamma MX soon. :)

Yes, Gammm is a shell so I usually wear that while hiking, I was wondering if I can throw Atom ar over when resting so I don't have to take Gamma off and lose the heat I build up.
I believe Atom ar has helmet compatible hood too. Maybe it should be fine.

@@mstjeon That would work great. The hood on the Atom is smaller. It is able to fit over a helmet, but the Gammas hood is meant to fit over the atom's when it is over a helmet too. But sounds like a good plan. Good luck :)
been thinking of buying the MX.. think it would be weird wearing it over the Covert or Better Sweater? or would the double fleece catch onto each other?
I just put that combination on, they fit together very well. Yes, the covert does not slide freely into the sleeves of the MX, but it's not too bad. It is very comfortable, once your all zipped up. The temperature here today is in the mid 30's F, and I was comfortable outside.

Great, one of the reasons why I started this channel was to help people to understand the products that they are spending their money on a bit better. I get it, I have ordered many of these pieces, which are very expensive, without ever seeing , trying on, or knowing how they fit. I want to help out with that!🙂 @@nimaiiikun

Hey guys any input is much appreciated do you think I am dreaming that I will ever be able to acquire a Gamma MX hoodie or jacket in XXL? I do not want Solitude
Maybe wait and see what becomes available for fall and winter. Maybe their stock will change, and more colors and sizes may be available. Also I would strongly suggest to check out the Sawyer hoodie. Very similar to the gamma MX only it's made with Gore-Tex infinium, and it has a smaller Hood. That's the one I'm looking at for this winter.
Thanks - as I was looking at some videos on the Sawyer jacket - very nice by the way - one of the few videos also mentioned an older discontinued jacket called the VENTUS SV - old Google info showed this to be a great jacket / back in the days when Arc was putting out A+ product. Do you know of this jacket? I have found one available in my size XXL and it may be the answer …. Half the price of a new Sawyer and in great condition- your thoughts ?

@@meandmyjackets I want them all! I already have the Practitioner AR Hoody and the Atom AR Hoody - I don't know if the Sawyer is going to fill a gap or not!
I prefer more down to earth clothing. Arc'teryx has this awful Yuppie, Tiktok clown status associated with it now.
