Mark is really just a special artist who has given far more to the world than he has taken. My heart goes out to those who fought in the Falklands and also in the Emu wars.
I’m an old man now but once upon a time I was an an 18 year old combat medic in Vietnam. It makes my weep for my Troopers like a child. Peace to you friends.
God bless you. I'm a probably slightly less old man. Although, I'm Canadian, I have two American cousins who served there. They both came home okay. Hope you did too.
Pensa MK1. Mark Knopfler 1 Created by Rudy Pensa and Mark Knopfler on a napkin in a coffee shop in New York. Mark wanted a guitar sounding like a Strat and a Gibson. I heard tell these are still available to order - 4-5 years waiting list.
Dire Straights is one of the tightest bands of all time. Mark's guitar is DaVinci like but the support of the keyboards, drums, that dude on the flute is truly the stuff of legend.
As far as I know Mark Knopfler doesn't use a pick - he picks notes only with his fingers. It may be this aspect that gives him such incredible control of note strength, volume, feel - everything. Incredible mastery of guitar and a truly beautiful song.
As a ex soldier, this hit the feels. "Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battle raged high And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms"
as a HUGE Dire Straits, and latterly Mark Knopfler fan I must have listened to this song over 1000 times, and still I well up and get goosebumps every time I hear it, this man has more talent in his little finger than most of the autotuned voices out there today who wouldn't know one end of an instrument from another ...... proper musicians who are masters of their art and more importantly enjoy what they do
I think they've been at it since a fish slithered out of the water, and grew legs. See Richard Dawkins. Some ( religious) folk say he talks bollocks, as they would. I rather agree with him !!
@@blackbob3358 biochemist here. So i also agree with sir Richard. Evolution is still one of the most researched and proven theories in the world. Where that leaves god claims i leave to the theists ;-)
Indeed we do cry with this song...at least I know I do! The beauty and emotion of this song does it to me, every time! As long as there is war in this world, which regretfully seems like always, this song will be relevant. Virtual hugs from Canada!
Mark plays notes on the guitar that don't exist. They can only be felt. A true guitar master. Brings back too many memories I that thought I had forgotten. A man without tears is not a man.
"....And we have just one world, but we live in different ones....." Gets me every time. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, we will always live in different worlds.
I remember vividly around 36 years ago walking up and down the living room in the middle of the night with my baby son in my arms, playing this song! I never forgot that special moment even though I was trying to get him to sleep, and succeeded, but just me, him and Dire Straits and the ambiance it created meant that it would stay with me for life, as you said.
You touch perfection and you are in heaven. Every time I get tears listening to this song and Mark Knopfler is a unique singer, guitar player , song writer, composer
Mark Knopfler wrote this song about the Falklands war where the UK lost about 240 soldiers and sailors. However the genius of his lyrics can refer to conflicts current and future. His ability to make the guitar "weep" for our soldiers strikes you deep in the soul. You should hear Telegraph Road live Alchemy concert.Another masterpiece.
I am glad you listened to this live version, it's stunning, no body can play like Mark Knopfler. He is totally unique, such an emotional guitar player, please keep on with Dire Straits, and Mark's solo songs.
All the greatest musicians have this quality, they all have their own unique style and sound and you know who is playing even before the vocals come in. Two other great players in this mould are Dave Gimlour and Steve Rothery
It's so personal for me. I already told you I lost my brother in Afghanistan. He was not my family but my family in Afghanistan. This song is very emotional for me. Love youre reaction.❤ With love from The Netherlands.
I'm so glad you did the live version. I'm trying to cook tea and I'm a mess lol First the goosebumps then the tears lol Thanks for doing this A FLAWLESS MASTERPIECE just my opinion.
Perfect example of why I feel like playing super technical at a 100 MPH is irrelevant and playing your guitar soulfully like this is much more powerful.
This is such an emotional version of an incredible song. I’ve been listening to this for over 30 years and it gets me every time. Fantastic reaction and having that emotional connection to music is a beautiful thing so no shame, no judgment - just human and it’s very special 😊
It heartens me to see you talk about Mark Knopfler's guitar playing the way you do here. He is indeed a rather unique player, and doesn't really copy anyone. He makes the strings sing. He makes them growl, laugh, and cry. Eric Clapton once said that whenever he played with Mark, he didn't have to worry about a buncha his old licks being thrown back at him, as happened with many other players. A music reviewer once noted that, in his playing, 'Mark Knopfler rarely takes the easy way out.' So true. And that is just one reason that I have been a fan of the man for going on forty years, now. His songwriting is as singular as his guitar playing. MK is an unparalleled storyteller. Dominika, you said that this will not be the last Dire Straits song you react to. That simply made me smile, inside and out. May I suggest, even if you do not do any reaction videos for any of it, listen to Mark Knopfler's solo stuff as well. He's done more as a solo artist than with the Straits, and his songwriting has only gotten better over the years. If I had to suggest just one tune from his solo albums, it would be 'Done With Bonaparte'. For me, this tune is a perfect blend of storytelling through lyrics and music, and, as with many of his songs, is based on real history and, in this case, a real person. Thank you both for your wonderful reactions. They are as touching and inspiring as the music itself...
It is what the song was written for... brothers in arms fighting each other. Back then on Falklands and today in the UA. We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms....
Thank you for sharing, and sharing the true emotions of this song. More than any other rock song I have ever heard. Beautiful Mark, thank you for giving this to the world
Yeah dude, its rare that guitar playing Can touch the soul!❤ ( Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Slash and Jimmi Hendrix....but im not convinced that Jimmi nad a melody like other guys❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤, but Jimmi Is "Jimmi")!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I get that proverbial lump in the throat every time I hear this song, especially the live version. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing goes straight to your heart.
This live CD ("On The Night") is one of the most played CD in my home through the years since its release. Its a perfect played and produced live performance. And BIA is a killerend of the album.
I love your comments and testimony both of you ! This song moves me so much , its heartbreaking lyrics, wonderful rendition of talented guitarist. What a great song! This brings you closer to heaven
Absolutely and while Ukraine watches out for their brothers and sisters, russians literally let their people die. They just don't care. And that's why they'll lose. 🇳🇱❤🇺🇦
How does he do it, how does he do it, Mark Knopfler is more than a genius, he and his band here are a tier above every body else. Everything in this masterpiece is from Mr Knopfler and long may he reign ❤
When Mark grabs the guitar, Brian Johnson started to cry as every real man would do, if you think about your brothers in arms, especially if you joined a war. A song about Friendship, what means the most to a real man.

Wow my friend don’t ever worry there’s no shame in your tears believe me there is many a man myself included that’s been reduced to tears by this song and this great man of musical history
I'm 28 years old and the best memories of my life are when I went to the countryside with my father and he played dire straits in the car on a Sunday morning ❤ from Brazil 🇧🇷
Hi, I'm 60 years old and have seen many bands live but only three have left a lasting impression on me: the Eagles, Pink Floyd and Dire Straits. In Brothers in Arms Mark Knopfler even lets his guitar cry, the way he plays his guitar is the highest level I've seen and heard in my life.
This is a crazy beautiful song played in The same maner by Knopfler and Direstraits. I heard it for the first time when it was realest back in the days..and man i can tell you guys many tears have been shred while listening to this masterpiece. Thank you for a beautiful reaction.❤️❤️👍👍
Nothing to be ashamed of I cry like a baby every time I hear him preform this song I totally get it. Hold your head high and stay true to your feeling’s and emotions there is nothing to be ashamed of my friend’s
This record reminds me of the Christmas of my last year at school. We all knew - our friendship group - that 6 months later we’d all be going our separate ways and every time I hear it I’m right back in December 1985… I can’t even put into words adequately how it makes me feel, but the excitement and anxiety of facing exams and the rest of our lives but knowing g things would never be the same again
I love this song, it reminds me of when I served in the Army, it was played in our briefing just before we went out on patrol in Northern Ireland and we'd regularly get attacked.
Thank you both for your reaction, I loved it ♥ Andrei, you know you've found a great artist when their music can evoke such overwhelming emotions. I've cried to Mark Knopfler's music more times than I care to remember. I'm excited for you both to be at the start of your Dire Straits journey. They have so many more incredible songs for you to discover, and Knopfler really covers every genre. I will make some more recommendations to help you get started. Keep up the great work, much love.
The first time I heard Dire Staits on the radio it was obvios to me this was a special, unique sound, as is Marks guitar technique and style. So different than other guitarists. Similar to David Gilmour in some ways, so expressive.😊
If God plays guitar, it will sound like this....Mark is absolutely magic to listen to here....never heard a better live version of this iconic song. Marks infinite talent on the guitar is just INSANE....one of the best to ever walk this planet. Dominica, You are such a beautiful, warm and charming woman.....really sharp and intelligent in your observations, all though u are not a musician....keep up the great work, from Denmark.
feel it too. lost my Father KIA. 30 yrs ago. it still hurts. this song is a British Forces classic. MK lost a close family member like me. I heard that back in the 80s from a friend of his.
My only child,a son will be 30 this year. He is the first generation in my family not to be conscripted or volunteered into military service. I watched the silent fear and pain on my father’s face, he listened to the news every night…. They would report on injuries and fatalities, afterwards he would stare at the phone. Thank God, both my brothers survived the 2 year frontline war
Great reaction ! Can only ask that you now step away from the melancholy of this song and lift us up with the live performance of their rendition of "Sultans of Swing" . you wont regret it
Only the really big ones can create such emotions in the audience and listeners during live performances. You can see and hear what the performer wants to give to all of us. That's why I prefer live performances to studio versions. I'm so happy you played this song live again. I feel the same as you two. Great.
To the beautiful man reacting to this song...new subscriber, sorry i don't know your name yet. I would just like to say that if there were more people like you in this world, it would be a better place. Your honesty, integrity and humanity are wonderful to see and give me hope. Thank you and sending you both lots of love from Ireland...Linda
Mark Knopflers unique sound comes mainly from his technique of plucking the strings of his guitar with his fingers rather than using a pick. Love your reactions guys👌✌
Love that you appreciate this. Dire straits is an incredibly special band. Marknis a fucking genius. A true artist. The music accentuates the story. Super super remarkable.
The Pensa mk1 Mark is playing here have a slightly sharper sound then the Les Paul used on the album version. It has such a beautiful "voice" and he know how to make it sing, laugh, growl, shout, and cry. I knew you would love this version.
I got to see dire straits just the once when I was 18-19 they are still the best band I’ve ever seen live and I am 50 now. Telegraph road alchemy live is probably the best performance of any song ever, and Romeo and Juliet Wembley 1988 with Clapton is one of the most beautiful renditions of one the most beautiful songs ever written (plus an amazing sac solo) there are many more from my favourite band and guitarist but that will get you started.
Peace to you friends.
peace, love, and respect, man
Check out RIDE ACROSS THE RIVER it has a military theme too.
God bless you. I'm a probably slightly less old man. Although, I'm Canadian, I have two American cousins who served there. They both came home okay. Hope you did too.
All the babies who died or were wounded in Vietnam - average age 19. It breaks the heart over and over.
God bless you sir
The most beautiful poignant song, beautifully played, beautifully sung and beautiful reaction...Enough said...Thank you!
This guitar shows more emotions than half of the singers in the world. It's really special.
A 1000 likes to this song.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤!!!........beautifull Said ma' man!!!
Absolutly!!!......This song will live forever 'cuzz, sadly, the war!!!❤

The Guitar is weeping for every single soldier.🇬🇧
Each and every note of that guitar reverbrated into the crowd... They knew what a Mark Knopfler solo can bring..
Been a fan my whole life and I still can't believe how evocative his sound can be. Beyond gifted!

Talk about an emotional song. A masterpiece, absolutely brilliant.
I can't imagine anyone not enjoying the guitar and its tone in this song.
I was at one of their 1990s concerts and the setlist included this and many of their brilliant hits, and I remember crying alongside the other audience members! This hit is such a sad, beautifully composed, emotionally expressed serenely performed masterpiece of a poetic expression of the horrors of war, which hurts everybody.. no winners in war but everyone suffers.
