I was born in 1969 and discovered the Dire Straits in 1985. Mark Knopfler has been a part of my life every day since. The Dire Strait performed in Israel (My home) in 1985 and I couldn't get to the concerts. 34 years later I fulfilled my dream. My wife and I flew to Budapest in 2019 to see Mark Knopfler on stage. We sat in the first row!.
She's wrapt in the music, saying "it's so beautiful" - and the look on Andre's face looking at her, very expressive, I think he's thinking "you're so beautiful." ❤
You guys are absolutely fantastic!! Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius!! His guitar playing is so great it would be easy to overlook his absolutely brilliant storytelling. I am lucky in that I was 20 years old when they broke through and I am now 65. I have loved Mark's music all that time. Great to see you react to them and hearing these songs for the first time. Thank you!! Best wishes from the UK.
Mark Knopfler IS Dire Straits. Musician, guitarist, singer and songwriter. Only Knopfler, Tchaikovsky and Puccini, have had me in tears with their music. I love Andrei and Domenika's reactions in these videos. Very honest and moving.
I'm born 62 and i have had this in the back ground for my entire adult life. I do not take for granted that i was in full understanding how special music makers are in all these years. ❤❤
I can tell you I was 29 that night and was in that audience at Alchemy Hammersmith Oden London in 1983 and I’m now 68 and this will be one of the top three musical experiences of my life out of hundreds
I was at this concert, my first concert ever. Mark and perhaps this song specifically was the reason I told my mom, I want guitar lessons. I stopped listening to Dire Straits for too many years. Rediscovering it. About that concert .. read a review of the concert in local paper next day .. review went on about how those long solos were boring, I thought that guy was a raving lunatic.
Dominika, I fell under Mark's spell 45 years ago during my first listen to "Sultans of Swing" on the car radio, and--happily--the spell has never been broken. I truly understand your feelings regarding this extremely gifted man and his captiving music.
Dominica me too the spell does not go away, and after soo many years still goosebumps...loving every minute over again I have seen them live once on their last tour back then, and realize now how lucky I was/am
I think Mark is probably the best storyteller musician that I've ever heard. As Dominica says, not only lyrics but what he does with the guitar. He moves you into such an emotional place, and brings you into the song as an experience. What an absolute master. I saw them in Brisbane in about 1985. They did not disappoint.
Do you know how they got the name 'Dire Straits'? They were flat broke (in financial dire straits) and used their last money to buy a few hours in the recording studio. They recorded their first (and best) album in one day but were rejected by all the record labels. They sent the recording to a DJ at a local radio station to ask for his advice but he loved the music and played 'Sultans of Swing' to his listeners who also loved it. Within weeks the same record labels who rejected them were banging on the door to sign them up.
You are right, Mark speaks and sings through his guitar. He and David Gilmour both convey so much through their instrument, expressions with their fingers. Note their similar styles in the intervals, or pauses, between phrases, much like human conversation. Skilled and beautiful. Mark has the edge with his lyrics, in my opinion. He says so much, with so few words. Enjoy, there is so much more for you to discover!
Its like a 1950s crime B Movie, starring Jimmy Cagney. Mark Knopfler really knows how to write melodies. You really feel for his characters. And these are mini movies, mini narratives.
Been listening to dire straits for 40 years this is my favourite track, and when you are listening to an utter genius the chances are that it's going to be Great
Magnificent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark is a gift to the world. His guitars sound magical. The entire band is at the top of their game and it shows. The talent on that stage is mind blowing. A feast for the ears.
Hello *Andre* & *Dominica* I was born in 1967 (I'm French) and discovered *Dire Straits* thanks to an ad for a French bank which passed on tv in 1983 ⇾ *Publicité vintage "Avion de chasse"* (on *Crédit Agricole Provence Côte d'Azur* YT's channel). And it was a part of this title. After that, I bought all of Dire Straits's albums out. I was precisely like *Dominica* in how she reacted each time it was a new *Dire Straits* title on the bench. 😊 Peace, folks. ☮😉
I was born in 66 and was very much into concerts from about 13. A huge regret is to not have seen Dire Straits. They were a VERY tough ticket to get a hold of.
Love this classical almost Spanish style from Mark. He is just so damn good. One of my Favorite Ire Straits tunes. Somewhat theatrical and experimental. Just F**king brilliant!
I so much relate to Dominka's reaction here - because it is so wonderful and so easy to fall head over heels in love with music, with a particular artist or band - even on a first listen! In the end it doesn't matter how young or old you may be when you first fall in love with it. The artist and the music and the recording retain their power forever! These discoveries make life worth living! May you both have many, many more!
great reaction to a wonderful song. 'Film noir' is a French term, which means 'black movie', so pronunciation is more like 'fealm nwahr'. I guess old black and white movie with Robert Mitchum as detective Philip Marlowe fit that description - many scenes half in darkness, in the evening, melancholy.
1982 and my wife bought me the Love Over Gold vinyl album. Every time I needed to calm, focus, for things like job interviews etc, I played Private Investigations, and it put me in a good place. I still play it when I need to. Thanks Mark
I've always loved how Mark has used different guitars in his song to get a different sound and emotion ,his palm tree itched steel guitar in Romeo and Juliet, and here starting with the acoustic guitar. And, of course, so much of Mark's music is brilliant storytelling, which, for me, gives the music more impact
Hello there! So glad that you have come to this song. For me this is the best Dire straits song easily. Only the Intro is one of the best ever been made. Thank you for as usual great reaction
Aah you have gotten to my favourite Dire Straits song, I love the emotion and the combination of acoustic guitar and electric guitar as well as a great story. And funny you should mention Film Noir as I always thought if this song as a music version of Film Noir.
Can you imagine what it would be like if Dire straits & pink Floyd (especially Mark Knoefler & David Gilmour) played together? It so happens that the two of them are good friends, and have played together, but only in private. They both did much of their recording at Abbey Road Studios in London. I would give a lot to hear the two of them together.
They were both in a French and Saunders episode playing parts of money for nothing and another brick in the wall. Thats about as close as Ive seen them
To lady's words how come you haven't been into those great bands, I was a kid and I was collecting, clipping magazine articles, pictures, looking around to find records, no internet no access to info, but still very sweet times
Mark's music has every possible mood there is, from this mysterious song to Calling Elvis live DS On The Night 1993 which has surprise after surprise as it goes along. Cheers guys I so love your channel and reactions ❤🎸🎸🎸
@@MerchantOfAlba, wow, it would be awesome if u react to one of their live songs (from their album ‘Paris’) e.g hide in ur shell or u can pick any… all are so good. When u experience a concert and the show is better than the album, it’s because the musicians and/or singers are real and their are the big.
I am so glad you are discovering this great band! What is awesome is to see you having reactions 40 years after this work came out and I am seeing in you what I was like when I discovered Dire Straits. There are so many fantastic songs to discover, Check out "Industrial Disease, Twisting by the Pool, Why Worry, Calling Elvis, and You and your friend"
Yes you could use this song on many old film noir sound tracks ,like Maltese Falcon [Humphry Bogart] or Out of the Past [Robert Mitchum] and it would fit beautifully
Poor Andre, Dominica is in love with someone else;) You two are just astounding, so honest, so natural, so kind and funny. With this song you have almost finished the slow repertoire of DS. "Where do you think you are going" is another one. "Calling Elvis" from "On the Night 1993" is a different style, but great nonetheless.
Hi there. Great and fun reaction. The intro to the theme of the film "Local heroe" is "Going home" thats one of the most beautiful moments in music histroy at least for me..If you have time check that out....the whole song....But the intro is the thing that does it for me.
Telegraph Road? Maybe you've done it and I missed it... Mark is instantly recognisable from the first note he plays in any song. Incredible guitarist. ("Feelm nwar" BTW)
Great reaction guys. Mark Knopfler is undoubteldy one of the greatest pop lyricists of all time. His lyrica are so poetic, so creative, they are master pieces even without the music just reading them on paper. And just think..........Today we have Lizzo.🤦♀
I describe this song as moody and cinematic. The composition and arrangement takes you right into a film noir scene in the most compelling way. The studio version, like practically every other track on the album, sounds spectacular and evokes the mood even more. Totally immersive.
As you have referred, more than once, he does not use a pick to play, nor does he uses the "whammy bar" ou "tremolo arm", but most distinctively as his one feature, is that he plucks the cords mainly with only 3 fingers and usually rests his small finger on the guitar body.
If you think Dire Straights sounds like a film soundtrack, Listen to Local Hero. From the Scottish film. He produced the soundtrack. i would highly recommend. :)
One of the perfect masterpieces showing how Mark/Dire Straits can instantly draw you into a 'story'/'movie'...you've experienced the 'magic' of Mark/Dire Straits...to me...this masterpiece felt like I'm watching a Noir film/suspense scene everytime hearing it...just amazing 😅(Noir is French for Black)...Noir films are like dark/thriller/mystery/detective theme/genre kind of films...
Somehow youtube did not registered my follow-up comment...it's ok, let's try again 🙂 Mark's talent/gift is unbelievable...he really can turn anything/any moment in time into a beautiful masterpiece, letting you relive that moment through his "storytelling" ability through his music... In the song/masterpiece "Wild West End" ua-cam.com/video/ItRkA6T5Q3w/v-deo.html you can experience once again how great of a talent he (Mark) is, how gifted he is. He created this masterpiece based upon just an ordenary walk one day with his friends through London...it somehow makes you feel like you were there with him and the others too, that you somehow were part of that walk 😅...and somehow you can "see" eveything very vivid...just amazing 😄... if you have the time/chance...I strongly recommend you give this version a chance: ua-cam.com/video/ItRkA6T5Q3w/v-deo.html it reflects this masterpiece soooo perfectly...just amazing..blew my mind into a kazillion pieces 😂...so please enjoy...cheers! have a great day...
There are two elements in this song that you need to pay attention to. 1) Mark's facial expression trying to appear as expressionless as possible. It's like he's trying to appear strong and reckless (maybe he's trying not to care anymore) for some reason. 2) Grasping the microphone with his free right hand as he says "Blinds in a window. And a pain behind the eyes." These two have an explanation as to the reason and meaning of the song being written. But I won't talk about it. Maybe friends who comment after me will mention. Cheers..
I would definitely listen to On Every Street next. It's another Dire Straights detective song. I like to think it's the exact same character as in Private Investigations.
The progression from the studio version, via this one (Alchemy), BIA tours (like Wembley '85) to On the Night version, is quite a journey, where everyone gets to pick their favourite. For the last 10 or so years I've regarded the '85 version as the pinnacle of this arc (band and the song being mature, on the top of their game) vs. OtN version (band on their last legs, the version more of "an old man's version" ) The '85 version being already matured, but retaining the raw aspects that make the song partially heavy metal.
I discovered Dire Straits through my now late father. He used to listen to them all the time and he got me listening to them. You should check out Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy concert. You will love it. Trust me. Cheers from Australia
I was born in 1958 and unfortunately never had the chance to attend such amazing concerts, which still hurts me to this day. But thanks to technology, at least today I can enjoy these live concerts with all my heart.
I know how you feel - I am 77 and I just recently discovered the magic of Mark Knoffler! He is truly gifted and amazing! I absolutely love their videos! WOW!
Hi. Really enjoy your reactions. Thank you and its lovely to share your reactions as for me, it is a reminder of how I felt on first hearing this classic music. When you feel it is time, you must delve into Marks solo work. There are gems in there too. Recommendation to you guys. "Why Worry" from the Brothers in Arms studio album. With lyrics that hold your soul, and uplift your mind with Marks guitar weaving dextrus lines and melody throughout the recording to leave you in a place of contemplative peace. Enjoy. Regads to you both. Simon.
If I remember correctly I think Sultans of Swing followed this song, I remember them fog on the floor was still present at beginning of Sultans of Swing
Hey guys. Great reaction. This is one of my favorite Dire Straits songs but there is not too many people reacting to it, so thank you for that. That being said, I think the live version from ‘On the night’ concert is even better than this one (Alchemy) . If you really liked this song, check out that performance.
you should come visit the Sultans of Swing pub on the borders of Royal Greenwich / Deptford. still there. and the cover of one of the albums you can see where it was taken. so much of DS vibe here.
You really need to see Mark performing with a very talented group of musicians at A Night in London from 1996. There are a number of fabulous live performances including Darling Pretty & the best live version I have seen of Brothers in Arms. You will not be disappointed!!
If you want to hear what Knopfler did with this song 35 years later, look for the video of Mark Knopfler & band (not Dire Straits) at Maddison Square Garden in New York on 25th September 2019 (I was there ;-)
I am truly enjoying your genuine reactions. Mark Knopfler is a musical genious and his song writing has become better and better during over the 4 decades. IMO from the official versions the "On The Night" version of Private Investigations is far better than this one and totally different too. So you may want to check that out for your own pleasure. Before introducing you guys to Mark's solo material, which surpasses Dire Straits in all levels; I warmly suggest "Ride Across The River" (album version) and "Planet Of New Orleans" (album version, since no proper live recording) or "You And Your Friend" (live version On the Night)
I was born in 1969 and discovered the Dire Straits in 1985. Mark Knopfler has been a part of my life every day since. Love this song❤️
it's one of his best songs, Always been a massive fan of it. Mark Knopfler like David Gilmour are living legends
Another masterpiece !!!
Poetry to music
A little foretaste of Mark's film music: Going Home from Local Hero Movie. Usually the end of the concert, also with Alchemy.
Brilliant suggestion
I was born in '65 and I was there!
The 80's and 90's were a great time for music!
I was very lucky

I first saw Dire straits at the Music Machine in Camden Town London in 78. I have followed them and taken them with me throughout my travels since.
One of my favourite dire straits song! The live version is so deep and misterious, perfect execution, band at his best!
Great reaction guys, as ever ❤

I have 2 favorite bands Dire straits and ABBA. completely different, but both briliant, unique and unbeatable
I was borne in 1964 and grew up with this music in my teens. Inspired me to learn guitar and still have one now 😊
Boom! You got it Dominika. He says it all with the guitar. This band live is ridiculous.

These two have an explanation as to the reason and meaning of the song being written. But I won't talk about it. Maybe friends who comment after me will mention. Cheers..
That’s SO TRUE!
Yes you right. 1964-65 are crazy for them… Because I’m too.
I would definitely listen to On Every Street next. It's another Dire Straights detective song. I like to think it's the exact same character as in Private Investigations.
your lady is absolutely right.....he's touching that guitar with his soul.....no other way to explain it....

WOW!
Yeah, again the lady just nails it! The music as a whole tells a story, lyrics or not. :)
not so much singing a song ... as telling a story along to music :D big love to all people :)
Amazing song
This is a wonderful reaction, thanks so much 👍🇬🇧
Haha you can stay in home Andrei.. when she listening to DS .. i give you a tip on listening to Mostly Autumn "the night sky"..
Just because you❤ PF. I promise you like this groupe. Other song you should listening to is distant train. This group have lots of gems. Try EM out
I’ve mentioned this before but hear Marks Guitar truly sing check out " Local Hero (Wild Theme) live from On the Night"
There's this small drum part near the end that always sounds to me like a gun being cocked and then fired.
My fiends❤
You can still go to a concert with Mark Knopfler and his band!
Brilliant! Lets have Wild theme from Nimes live
It’s been four years since mark Knopfler last toured but he has a new album out next year so he may well tour again.
I'll be so delighted if you react to Supertramp " The Logical song". Thanks
We already did, twice 😀 Please check our videos. Thank you for watching 😊
@@MerchantOfAlba So, if you feel like to react to other songs of Supertramp such as School or C'est le bon or Hide in your Shell...
