    This performance could be all the band ever did and they would go down in history. Its like zeppelin at knebsworth or msg, metallica in moscow, ac dc donnigton or hendrix at monterrey pop. Its a once in a lifetime experience and nothing can compare.

    i'm gonna be honest here .....for us who grew up in the 70s ....when the 80s rolled around ...we sometimes looked back at this stuff as being old school ...and the production old fashioned ....however , you see it now as classic and refreshingly honest !!! - its great stuff.....NEVER follow fashion....thats the lesson i learnt

It reminds me of the time when I got to know this music. Bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The doors etc. It was the early 90's and man we had a good time. Good friends, experience good music together, drink and smoke a little and were happy and carefree and became one in this music.

    This has always been considered an anti-Vietnam War song. Ian Gillan, the singer, wrote the lyrics. Their "In Rock" album was the second album I bought as a teenager. I saw them live three times in 1971, 72 and 73. They were fantastic live. (I still have all my extensive collection of vinyl from the 60s and 70s.)

      More about the Cold War..this song was written and recorded in 1969.

    • @psbarrow
      @psbarrow 9 місяців тому +9

      It's mostly Americans who think it must be about America's War Against Vietnam because everything has to be about them. But Gillan has said repeatedly it was about the Cold War. He said, for example, that “I started singing and the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat which hovered over us at this time which was probably when the ‘cold war’ was at its hottest ... So, we created this song using the Cold War as the theme.”
      Being British it's not surprising that they (and me) were far more concerned with any Soviet/ Warsaw Pact threat of invasion/nuclear war than the rogue, terrorist USA killing hundreds of thousands in a country half a world away that was never any threat to the them (or any other country) as they were fighting for their independence from France (and eventually US imperialism).

    • @ursgeiser6570
      @ursgeiser6570 9 місяців тому

      @@psbarrow Well said by an imperialist Brit, but a big fake. Who got involved in the Iraq war; I thought at the time that the UK would become the 51st state, moving away from the reluctance of other European countries.
      And even before that, with the Fakland War, Britain had rediscovered its old imperialist streak.
      Wars are mostly diversionary maneuvers by old machos to distract from national problems and to unite their country through nationalism.
      As the saying goes, everyone should take a good look at their own nose and reconsider their own behavior✌

      @@Rassskle the labels don't book four American tours in a year, plus Europe and the UK on top: the managers do. Labels wanted 1 album a year and the managers could have negotiated for time off. Look around for the Jon Lord interviews where he talks about how shagged out they were. Hepititis for Ian and Ritchie at separate times. That's down to management keeping them working non-stop. The record labels were a fraction of the driving force

And, still true, today, when speaking of war. The musicianship in this one is TOP-LEVEL and the vocals, as ALWAYS, with Ian Gillan, are STUNNING...and, in this case: heart-wrenching!!! I'm so glad all this music was available to me, as I grew up: a time when musicians could SO APTLY convey their thoughts and stances to the masses, whom many agreed with.

    Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple were known as the Unholy Trinity, the actual founders of Hard Rock. And like Dire Straits Deep Purple consisted of top class musicians. And that makes for greatness. I basically grew up in the 60s, was in my teens in the 70s and I cannot tell you how lucky I feel to still be able to see performances like this one nowadays and have that connection to, as Dominica said, "back in the day". Elisabeth Zharov (The Charismatic voice) in her reaction compared the uuhs and aaahs of Ian Gillan with various expressions of pain in relation to the war (the song was a Vietnam protest, the "blind man shooting at the world" being the two superpowers going at it and leaving havoc in their wake) which I thought was brilliantly deduced.
    In a way I think the best music has already been composed, written, and sung. Sorry, most of what we hear today is just a watered down version of what was pure back then.

      Hi, I would argue that - inbetween 1969 and 1972 - Zep, Sabbath, Purple AND Uriah Heep were the cornerstones of the basement of Hardrock.

      It’s not about America's War Against Vietnam, but the Cold War, as Gillan has repeatedly said. For example, “I started singing and the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat which hovered over us at this time which was probably when the ‘cold war’ was at its hottest ... So, we created this song using the Cold War as the theme.”
      Being British it's not surprising that they (and me) were far more concerned with any Soviet/ Warsaw Pact threat of invasion/nuclear war than the rogue, terrorism of the USA killing hundreds of thousands in a country half a world away that was never any threat to the them (or any other country) as they were fighting for their independence from France (and eventually US imperialism).

    Deep Purple, Led Zeplin, Black Sabath, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Tangerine Dream, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, The Who, The Stones, Super Tramp, Queen and many more.

    Hi my favourite couple! 💖❤💖❤Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath is probably the inspiration for most of the hard rock and metal bands of the 70s, 80s and 90s. They are considered one of the founders of Hard Rock. One of my personal favourites from the 70s. When Deep Purple reunited with this setting in 1985 and they came to Sweden, I had my jaw in my lap when Ian Gillan reached those notes still. A memory I will never forget.

    OH YES, THEY KNEW HOW GOOD THEY WERE. Gillan (vocals) and Blackmore (guitar) were among the cockiest of them all. They were #1 at that time (albumwise), Blackmore called one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, Gillan was the first Jesus Christ Superstar. This song is a protestsong against Vietnam-War.

    London WAS the place to be in the 60s and 70s. After that is was steadily downhill to where we are now. The musicians were so mature then and just incredibly talented and inventive. Those of us who experienced it were truly blessed as it will never come again.

    Every band member is right at the top of their game here, without any doubt...But for me, John Lords keyboard playing is truly on another level! Even better when it was coupled up through a Marshall stack. Such a humble legend of the keyboard, who could compose music that even a classical composer could not fault. Listen to their live album, Concerto for Group and Orchestra from 1969 to see what I mean. Rock bands playing alongside classical instruments are quite common these days, but as far as I know, this was a first, 54 years ago!

    So funny, performance around 1970 and the audience in the tv-studio sits orderly and quiet during the whole exceptional performance 🙂 In 1970 Ian Gillan sang the role of Jesus Christ in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (so three years before Ted Neeley performed the role in the movie). I think there is somewhere on UA-cam a video of Ian Gillan singing the song Gethsemane.
