    Excellent archival footage Allan. Yes, there are a few faces in here who I've watched catch fish consistently, so there's certainly more to it than so-called 'luck'. Perhaps it was the trawlers; or the irrigation extractors; or corporate dairying; or the meat-works polluters; or the ocean ranchers; or the salmon farms; or the sell-off of the high-country; or greedy quota management policies; or the so-called 'global warming' theory; or a combination of all of these. Sadly, it looks like we're being led down the path of 'supermarkets or starve', with all the wild fish and wild game being exterminated, or driven to disappearance. Hopefully, it's just part of a big, natural cycle.

    Lovely! How often do you catch a salmon when being there? Every time?

      If only that were true. Alas no. One thing I do like about fishing in the lower Waimakariri River is that if there are any salmon present there is a good chance that someone will catch one so you at least know that they are in there. By asking other anglers you will soon find out about the latest catches, how many have been caught, and where. Even during good seasons when a lot of salmon are caught at McIntosh's Rocks you will find that catch rates tend to be quite uneven. For example, a keen angler might catch seven there over a three month period between January and March. However, he may well have had two days when he caught a limit bag of two fish so there were plenty of days when he didn't catch any. Also, he may have had a period where he caught none for a month or more. As the old saying goes you have to be there with your lure in the water to have any chance!

    Do you have to release them if they are foul hooked?

    • @fishingmagconz
      @fishingmagconz  5 років тому +1

      Yes, that is correct Mike. You do have to release salmon and trout if they are foul hooked. “foul hook” means to hook a sports fish other than from within the mouth.

      @@fishingmagconz yeah I foul hooked a yellow tail Kingfish in the asshole in nz. Been trying years to get one. I wasn't throwing that one back. In fact that's me holding it in my pic.

      So, should have an endorsement even just go for kahawai fishing, to avoid any confusions from Ranger.

      @@corbeng6940 Whether you are fishing for kahawai or salmon at a river mouth is a question that comes up every so often. The regulations basically amount to this: You cannot fish in a river, or at the beach within 500m of a river mouth with fishing tackle that would be likely to catch salmon. Hence bait fishing is ok. Obviously, spin fishing with a ticer lure for salmon is exactly the same tackle and method that would take salmon. What seems to happen in practice is that Fish & Game councils police this differently in different parts of the country. If you don't have a fishing licence and release any salmon by-catch you should be ok. www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/news/67545739/fish--game-crack-down-on-unlicensed-anglers
