- In this video we explore New Zealand's 3 most famous salmon rivers.
The Rangitata, Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers in Canterbury on the South Island. Those 3 rivers have the biggest salmon runs each year and are the most popular salmon fisheries.
We check out each river from their mouths to their gorges and look for good access points along the way. We also give a few tips and trick on how to target those large salmon here in New Zealand.

So lucky to be in New Zealand. A beautiful place on Earth.
Great video. Planning a trip from Australia during March the year after next to again try for salmon and your video helped a lot. I prefer to fly fish and your description of the river middle reaches was very useful. Much better than trying to reach the river mouth to join the crowd earler in the season. Thank you.
Let me know how you get on. As a Pom stuck in sydney I’m very keen try try fly fishing for salmon in NZ
awesome video. would like to land a salmon one day haha along with some other south island species too. definitely feels like middle earth seeing the spots
Thanks man, I think you are due for a trip to the South Island 😆
Awesome information mate! Thanks for uploading!
Cheers and thanks for the feedback 👍
Thanks for this video, i am touring the south island in december/january and cant wait to fish these rivers
That's awesome, I'm sure you'll have heaps of fun!
Great video mate!
Thanks a lot!
Awesome... I’ll tour the south one day 👍
Yeah man, you should
Cool, would love to catch a salmon some day
Yeah man they fight super hard and are really exciting to catch. The big one that I got on the West Coast was pulling line like a kingie :) Would love to catch one on a fly rod one day but would need to be a pretty heavy salt water outfit.
How heavy of a lure works best to get to the bottom?
depends on the flow but if you only get a few lures, err on the heavier side. Around 20-30 gram should get it down to the bottom.
Great video. Can you fly fish for salmon in NZ like in Scotland, Iceland, Russia?
Yeah man sure can. There are some lakes that hold land locked salmon. And also when they run up the rivers to spawn.
Add the Waitaki to your Canterbury salmon rivers too.
Have you caught any there?
@@walkintomydream7208 Yes, it's a major salmon fishery. Central South Island Fish and Game or the Salmon Anglers Association will be able to give you information. Better still, head there in March/April.
@@ttrengrove Thanks for the info, mate!
Thanks for the tip 👍
The Waitaki is a great river for salmon.
Hey mate let me know when you go again in Canterbury would love to catch a salmon. We caught a snapper in Taylors mistake 😅
Sounds good! Taylors mistake is an awesome fishing spot with lots of rocky structure. Good to hear you can catch snapper there!
when did you catch a snapper in taylors mistake never heard of them coming that far south!!?? Well done!
What we should be done when salmon, is harvesting the fish from its eggs and sperm and then replacing that back into the system for futher catches??
It seems that with the low water levels and pollution in the rivers, the Salmon spawn has a low chance of survival.
Those salmon are not indigenous to New Zealand, they were introduced just like with many other species of animals and birds.
