I was guest in NZ in 2015 on an exchange that took place between California and NZ for waterfowl hunting. The people, landscapes and different species of waterfowl were something I'll appreciate for the rest of my life. The far NW of CA has a lot in common with the South Island.
I also got to go out on a spawner survey for salmon on June 1st on the Hokitika River. Being a salmon guy, it was amazing to see how Chinook from California had adapted to such a similar but different environment on the other side of the globe to sustain its own wild run there in NZ. NZ is the only place where Pacific salmon have been established as self-sustaining. Our Sacramento River "Winter-run" Chinook are believed to have been the primary source for the introduction, which spawn in May-June here. The Winter-run is endangered here as dams cutting them off from their higher altitude and glacial melt fed spawning grounds and almost countless water diversions on the way downstream to the ocean. Enjoy what you've got and support protection your rivers and the great fishing you have.

Enjoys your videos man, I grew up in kiakoura and chch before moving to aus. I took my partner to the dams in twizel a few years ago and she caught an 9kg brown trout there. Fishing anywhere around the salmon farm off main south road to phenomenal.

Shimano rod a baitrunner Shimano reel, I think the line was a nylon braid line... hope that answers your question.

The releases stopped due to the trust folding that operated the hatchery that released them every year.@@CalTheKiwi1
