VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
We all know what Richard Brandon meant when he said, ‘If you want to be a Millionaire, start with a billion dollars and launch a new airline.’ This is because the aviation business in one of the most expensive and yet one of the least profitable businesses in the world!!! The Aircrafts are very expensive, labor costs are very high and most importantly, even with a slight change in oil prices, your profits could either skyrocket or nosedive!!
This is because, in the aviation business the fuel alone costs 30-40 % of the revenue and profit margins are barely 10%. So if your fuel cost shoots up by 30% due to a geopolitical event, unless you increase the prices, your airline will start bleeding losses!!
This is the reason why airlines go out of business not just in India but all across the world.
But while 100s of airlines have gone bankrupt all across the world, the leaders of Dubai built such a legendary airline that this airline has been profitable for 35 out 38 years of its operation!!**! Infact, before covid from 2018-2020, this airlines generated an average revenue of 16.5 billion dollars and an average profit of 428 Million dollars!!! This is airline is none other than the legendary emirates airline!!! and if you are a business owner or a leader, this story of emirates, has some very very important business lessons for you!!!
So in this episode, today, lets do a deep dive and understand,
What is the story of emirates airlines??
In a world where airlines are going bankrupt every year, how is emirates so profitable??
And most importantly, what are the lessons we can learn from the legendary emirates airlines?

@@HasanUnknown You can call that "one" whatever you want, depending on your religion. This is the main principle of secularism in India.
It's true that the essence of (original) bhagwadh gita, (original) Quran and (original) Bible are all the same. But all of these have been manipulated multiple times based on convenience.
If you aren't over these religious politics and conflicts (which the political parties need), the nation will never develop!
At the very least, I now grasp the concept of leverage. Creating wealth and financial freedom isn't as tough as many people believe. Building wealth and remaining financially stable indefinitely is a lot easier with the appropriate information. Participating in financial programs and products is the only true approach to make a high income and remain affluent indefinitely...
Most people simply enter the foreign exchange market without comprehending matters like this. The first stage in building money is determining your goals and risk tolerance, which you may do on your own or with the assistance of a financial counselor who works with a verified Finance agency. And also you can learn the facts about saving and investing and create a clear plan, you should be able to acquire financial security over time and enjoy the benefits of income management.
That is why I work with John Desmond Heppolette, who introduced me to a better Financial community, a verified agency where I learned how money works and how to create it, as well as free books, courses, and daily lectures. You also get to meet new people, which was the best decision I ever made.
Thank you so much for the advice. Your coach was simple to discover online. I did my research on him before I scheduled our phone call. He appears knowledgeable based on his online resume.

I have flown Qatar and Emirates both. I had a really bad experience with Qatar airways. Qatar airport(Doha) and Qatar airlines' air hostesses were rude and racist. But Emirates treated me great. When I was struggling in the middle seat because of my height issue, Emirates' air hostess understood that and offered me the exit row seat and treated me well all throughout the journey. May be such care and gestures makes people want to use Emirates.

A major reason why emirates was profitable by its aircraft was because it buys aircraft of same kind mostly which are a380-800 and 777-300er thus maintained crew could be trained easily and also the pilots could be trained easily. Emirates buys aircraft as bulk orders thus they get heavy discounts at the list price given by the manufacturer. Emirates also acts as a investor to new aircrafts which are yet to hit market like 777x which helps them to procure aircraft’s early.
I live in Dubai last 15 years. I would like to mention that Dubai as an Emirate has less than 1% of its GDP coming from Oil. Those assuming that Emirates might be buying fuel a lot cheaper than others are wrong. Rather, if you go back in history over last decade or 15 years, Emirates has written-down losses from fuel hedging too. And we are not talking of small losses but quite massive.
The vision of the Rulers of Dubai (and UAE in general) is incredible. The focus on diversification of its economy has been since decades now and creating tourism spots. Fun fact - Just the city of Dubai has more hotel rooms than entire India in the organized 3*/4*/5* category. Getting a tourist visa for UAE is one of the simplest things and something they have been doing for ages. I can go on and on….
You should mention the premium services they provide. That’s why the rich loves emirates. Also their premier product of first class in A380 .
That's because of the same oil money. Without that they don't have other major income sources. It's a resource less country. Just look at other islamic countries without oil.

Well done for not falling the stereotype of 'they have oil' so have low costs. They buy aviation fuel at the same market prices as others hence the need for hedging. Also not government subsidies like people claim

Probably one of the most value packed videos from Think School ever. Brilliant stuff, super insightful!
Keep at it, man!
You missed the point that UAE controls oil supply by being a producer and being a part of OPEC. That's why they can hedge. They know where the price will go 9/10 times.
I have flown Emirates multiple times, and I can say their service, behaviour, operations are at another level. Even if your travelling Economy, you will feel you are special. Their food is delicious. Their in-flight entertainment is really good. The staff is super polite and treats you like family. I have multiple instances where Emirates allowed me to checkin over weight bags free of cost. Love for Emirates.

When you are writing the success story of Emirates, you should have mentioned the contribution of Dnata as well. Dnata is the ground handling, Airport management and cargo division under the Emirates group, currently operating in 127 Airports in 84 countries and employing more than 41000 people. In the year 2022-23 itself, Dnata brought in a profit of 331 Million AED to the Emirates group.
Concise and informative video as usual. After watching your videos, I get a momentary motivation to start reading business books 😄, but I am still yet to convert that momentary motivation to passion!! Keep spreading knowledge and motivation 🙌🏼
Loved this and this made me to subscribe. I am surprised why i didn't see your channel earlier
I find it weird that there is no mention of Emirates' fleet strategy of having only 2 aircraft types, but in large numbers to keep crew and maintenance costs low. Having such a homogenous fleet allows them to do most maintenance in house.
My god, this was such a perfect explanation one can ever make
Not an iota of deviation, crystal clear explanation & presentation in the best way possible

Great video! Learnt lots
Thank you for the case study
Why don't other airlines use strategies like fuel hedging? Additionally, I have another suggestion: creating a comparison video featuring a failed company and a successful one. This could provide a helpful basis for comparison.
Easy to understand, Emirates is a government 's company who provide security. Another's companies have limited investors on stock market. And we know how UEA countries treat their employees. If you remember about worldcup , it was a slave system to build stadium, and you the same system they use to build the city and run the companies, they learned from China.
Other airlines do fuel hedging as well .
So fuel hedging can be done with a bank or international commodity market.
These forward contacts are only for max 3 months.
So u can hedge for a maximum of 3 months.....
Cathay did but got it wrong (the market rate dropped after it fixed the price I remember)
Excellent analysis🔥 Goosebumps
Superb case study. Thank you
Synergy is beyond commendable 😮
I think Emirates started being somewhat frugal but was very quick to fix that in order to de-leverage itself of not having own fleet by placing an order of around 10 Airbus A-310s in 1987.
Had Emirates been more frugal and continued the model of leasing aircrafts from other carriers and continue profitability it would have increased the lease rates in long run.
So Emirates planned everything so well that it's the best carrier now.
Most of my friends who left India this month to pursue MS in US preferred Emirates as first choice airline.
Apart from that the less average age of an Emirates aircraft shows even the safety priority of Emirates which is by far the most important metric which a passenger looks at when he travels other countries.
If possible please make videos on other successful long running carriers like Qantas of Australia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways etc.
P.S: I personally never travelled in an Emirates aircraft. I travelled in Air India and IndiGo that's it.
Think school is really doing stunning work through their case studies on amazing topics which diverts the youth of our and make them really sane

thank you for the info. about Emirates. Last year I had booked a holiday to Seychelles ( that is where I first met my ex-wife ) and I wanted to have another there before I die, as I am 82 and i was so pleased to go on an Emirates A380 plane; which was absolutely fantastic, because the next plane was a Boeing 777 from DBX to Seychelles. There is NO comparison between it and the A380. Airbus planes are always good, even smaller ones.

Very well explained
you forgot to say that they have a very standard set of planes. They only buy Airbus A380's and Boeing 777-300's. All the equipment in the 777 and a380's like seats and over-head bins are standard. Since the A380 is no longer in production, only now are they planning to buy 787 and A350's.
And you forgot to mention the elephant in the room, or should I say camel in the room factor. They can purchase oil for a very cheap price, much cheaper than international market price from Abu Dhabi. Many times Emirates flight do not fill fuel up in the destination of shot-haul routes like Dubai - Chennai. They will fill up fuel to come back also, They enables faster turnaround in the destination, and cheaper flights. I remember one time when I few to Dubai, they turned around the plane in Chenna in 45 minutes.
Well explained 🎉

Dubai visionary leaders want everything - world class. Wonderful research as usual 👏
Great case study yet again. Kudos to you guys!! You are doing a fantastic job. In this particular case study, I would point to what critics have been saying about Emirates. They claim that a big reason why Emirates balance sheet is healthy is because the operations are heavily subsidized by the govt. This helped them offer a lot of perks to customers and yet were able to keep the pricing competitive. This irked other airlines like United who sought their govt help to try to ban Emirates routes flying into the US. This was from a Forbes article from a few years back. I think it helps to also talk about the contrarian view in case studies like these. It will help viewers give a full 360. That's how our case studies in my MBA program in Berkeley were. My 2 cents. Once again fantastic job!!
