Lyle David Mays
* 27. November 1953 in Wausaukee, Wisconsin;
† 10. February 2020 in Los Angeles, California
Lyle Mays has been an integral part of the Pat Metheny Group since its inception in 1977,
and has co-written much of the consistently engaging music for the multi-Grammy-winning group's albums.
Lyle's sense of melody, crystal clear virtuosity and almost cinematic scope of orchestration has clearly distinguished the group's sound.
Born into a musical family in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, in 1953,
he was always encouraged to explore new forms of expression.
As a teenager, Lyle attended jazz summer camps and studied with such talents as Rich Matteson and Marian McPartland.
He then studied composition and arrangement at North Texas State University before touring with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd.
While appearing at the 1975 Wichita Jazz Festival, Lyle met twenty-year-old guitarist Pat Metheny, and the two formed a musical alliance that has proven to be among the most artistically successful of the past three-plus decades.

Lyle was a musical genius. I can’t believe he’s gone. I remember being taken to the Secret Story concert for the first time experiencing the Lyle Mays and the Pat Metheny group. I changed my life forever and I’m grateful to have seen him throughout the years. He truly is missed. I hope to see him again
I still cannot believe Lyle is gone…….just way too early. Genius in every way
Yes,he was genius friend.
I´m with you. Still processing this fact, still try to accept Lyle gone.
The dude had DEFINITELY not lost any of his amazing chops by taking a break all that while. He always makes the amazing look effortless.
A real Genius yes! One of the biggests musicians of XX & XXI 😢
Wow, I could listen to this for hours on end. Such beauty. The joy and peace it brings me is indescribable.
Great musicians like Lyle kept some kind of sweet Hope in my struck heart. R.I..P
❤
I love watching Lyle in this video. I only discovered it 3 months ago, and I watch it almost every day, sometimes twice.
I'm happy to read that. I also think that LYLE looks very happy in this performance, which he never did during his time with the PAT METHENY GROUP. And I'm also pleased that there is so much interest in this video. This appearance has now been viewed 48,467 times (as of October 2023). And all within three years! Wow. Thank you.
You’re very welcome, and I totally agree with everything you’ve said. Seeing Lyle’s happiness, makes me smile every time I watch it. Thank you so very much for posting it.
@@thomasholzhaeuser do you have full version of this perfomance?

Wouaw comme y joue bien😍 dans Pat Metheny il était déjà une pièce vedette du groupe, avec Yanni ils les meilleures pianistes que j ai pu écouter dans ma vie ❤❤❤❤❤👍🙏
I was today years old when I learned about Lyle Mays from an interview with Jonah Nillson from Dirty Loops and I wish I wish I knew about him sooner. Just amazing!!! I grew up listening to Michel Camilo and this has the same vibe.
He was AMAZING to watch live. I was introduced to him by my parents. My first concert was Secret Story. I couldn’t believe I watching him play keyboards, piano, guitar and then off all things the bag pipes! I will forever remember him and all the times I got to see him live. Truly outstanding
I miss you, Lyle.
Oh man…….☺️ 🎶
Thanks Lyle….and Co.
God bless you, Lyle - you are truly missed, that loss is immense! ❤🙏🎹
The backbone of at Matheny Group, a genius, one of my first references when I started listening to and leaning Music in the 80's.
Thank you master! You are immortal in our hearts.
💜
Everybody played exactly like they should but nobody played to their own to allow Lyle freedom of expression. It was perfect.
Lyle was one of the reasons I learned piano... I can keep up with him for the first part of this (kinda), but then I'm wasted trying to do what he does at the end. Man he was good.
And of course he is playing a Steinway.
Brilliant!
What a great loss…
rest in peace lyle. 4 years already gone by...
I think this is the most physically animated I have ever seen Lyle while playing!! MASTER!
Legend .... missing him...
Sheer Genius. I miss hearing new music from him.
Awesome pianist..RIP
I'm DEEPLY saddened to learn tonight of Lyle's passing. May he be with God in eternal peace and joy. To me, the best example of his musical magnitude is his piano interlude on San Lorenzo from the Pat Metheny studio album from the 1970s. What a loss. And yet, what a legacy. RIP, Lyle
One of the Best.
.. huge and huge, and finally Huge performances on.. especially Genius Mays forever, and mr. Brannly drums.. Thank you very much..
How much i miss him !
Great...Infinite....Ingegnous...Unique....Lyle !! How much you miss to all of us...How how much !!
nice performance 🙂🙋♂ r.i.p. Lyle Mays (fantastic)
more like Lyle Mays 🌹
I heard this tune live almost 45 years ago. He played it very down tempo, very sexy. This version is amazing to hear. He was such a genius. Sad that he is gone. Got to meet and chat with him several times.
This never gets old. 💜💜💜
Miss u lyle...I'm sure ur playing for angels in the sky
Thankfully, we live in an age where you can preserve these wonderful recordings of Lyle forever (digitally).
Preserve and share with others 😉
The Mays/Metheny library of recordings was destroyed in a record company fire a few years ago, so the masters are gone and so are the alternative takes. We have what we have and no more--sad to say
Thank you very much, Thomas, for sharing this great piece ! Very rare to see Lyle that much emotional, like at the end of the video.
He was the best his legacy will linger infinitely & his spirit lives on. Heaven's a better place with him sittin' in with the band up there with the angels in paradise my oh my folks
I miss Lyle Mays more than ever when I listen to this.
Lilemiles
So so so so sad we don't have him anymore.
Holy Lyle…
Se te extraña Lyle...
Adoro ascoltarlo mentre si diverte a suonare questo pezzo.... genio assoluto
This is just sublime.
What a great lose , he truly was a musician of unbelievable talents. Saw him many times with Pat Methany and group. Fantastic . I love playing to their music on the drums.
I'm wandering if he looked so happy and satisfied with the PMG.
Grandioso Mario.Gracias por lo que me Diste,Música,Sensilla, pero pero muy útil Para aprender y transformarse en un Gran Maestro como Vos.Dios te Bendiga.Forever❤👍🙏
A beast...4:15 and on. Physically into it! Powerful! 💗
Great artist. RIP.
RIP Lyle
Lyle Mays was always available to be possessed by higher energies.
Beautiful playing... his style is so fluid and melodic, precise. Nice to hear this tune bopped up a little (yes, the original is “smooth” and amazingly orchestrated, with orchestra, of course).
WOW - love these guys they create magic with their music. Thank you for posting!
Rest in Peace, Lyle. You will be truly missed and forever be in our hearts.
Yes we miss him
Thank you so much for posting this Masterpiece. U Made My Day 💜💜💜💜
Happiness
VIVA O SAMBA!!!
Only great comments here… thanks to all of you commenters
Can't help but wonder if we'll ever be treated to Lyle home recordings from the post-Metheny Group time. I'm hoping many more recordings of his performances without Pat surface, but I'm thinking his solo tours were infrequent. I heard one in the late 80's and then concerts in several cities after his Fictionary recording. His piano dream world was unforgettable. Hope there's much more.
Thank you so much! Auf jeden Fall gut, dass Er das hier nicht mehr miterleben musste.
Quite arguably the greatest Smooth Jazz peace"ever composed by The Metheny maestro off the "Street Dreams " album I remember listening to this track in "Dolby SRSound 7:1 w/DSP equalized compression in FM-STEREO in the late '🎶 '80's back then his only competition in the "Smooth Jazz genre to this very day was and still is his fellow band-mate's Pat Metheny's brother "Mike Metheny playing a sweet Jazz Flugel 🎺 horn on the track "Day-in..Night-out" MCA/Impulse recordings!
G.O.AT. 💜💜💜💜
Gifted musical talent! Did he have a family (children?) that he passed his talent on to?
God exists, it cannot be otherwise
Woodwings (!) doing great too. ;)
goods
se è vero che nel pianoforte il "tocco" è tutto; Mays lo possedeva eccome.

Thank you very much, Thomas, for sharing this great piece ! Very rare to see Lyle that much emotional, like at the end of the video.
